The Nights are getting Warmer…It won’t be Long

We’ve had a very nice warm-up this week, giving us a sneak peek of the season just around the corner. On Monday it finally got up in to the fourties and we thought we were in heaven. I had a good check up at the dentist and Ann tried to deal with all the BS at her work, which wouldn’t eventually play itself out until late in the week. This stress would make it a challenging week for her. Abby went to jazz class at Dixon Studios and Matt had weightlifting with the football team. This was also Daytona week, meaning the start of the racing season. Jeff won the outside pole on speed and with Jr wrecking his primary car this week, that should bump Gordon to the lead…I’m not sure if he gets to choose which line he wants but he’ll probably want the outside line anyhow… That night we went to the high school for Abby’s basketball game. She is lucky to be getting playing time on the high school floor; which seems huge with these little girls on it. It turned in to another track meet for the most part, as the girls pretty much just ran up and down the court. She played against her friends, the twins Ashlyn & Bailie. They really need to have more practices. They look very sloppy and although their star player was there for the game, she was feeling under the weather and they ended up losing by four points. Abby only took one shot and did not score. She also had two rebounds, went 0-1 in rebounds and a turnover. She played decent defense at times but overall was just kind of blah without much hustle. She really needs hands-on practices and she could be really good.

On Tuesday, we had our own stressful day at my work. I went in early and got out late, working about 14 hours, all of which were spent without a drop of water in the facility – yes; that is correct – we had the water to the entire hospital off to replace the backflow preventers in the main plumbing lines (both a 2??? and an enormous 6??? one). My team and I were all pretty sore and very tired at day’s end from hauling water buckets to commodes all day long. It was a beautiful day that reached up to the fifties. Ann took Abby and Luke to their basketball practices that night. I think I lasted about a half hour when I got home before I was sawing logs on the couch. Wednesday was an even warmer day that saw the sixties for the first time in a few months (early November?). Abby went to her first spellbowl practice. Mom & Sandy watched the kids for us that night as Ann & I first went out for drinks with George & Denise at the Garage Pub and then we all met up with Dan & Kasey out at the annual Pregnancy Care Center charity dinner, there in Columbus. It was a pretty good meal and they had a couple speakers that talked about their mission and stuff. It was a formal event so Ann went out and bought me an outfit. I think it was the first time I wore a tie since our wedding! We saw Allen & Frankie, along with Allen Sr and Elaine out there as well. It was great to catch up with Allen, who had is camera with him and showed me a bunch of behind the scenes photos of his time on Biggest Loser and his appearance on the Leno show – particularly a picture of him and Charles Barkley that he’s supposed to send to me. He is doing great and is working on a few websites and of course competing to get on the Dancing with the Stars TV show. The # 11 Boilers beat the #10 Badgers that night which was not only sweet revenge but should put them back in the top ten again.

By the time Thursday rolled around, we were looking at the warmest weather since my birthday. It was nearly 70 degrees at one point! Matt had weightlifting and Abby had missed tap class to attend her basketball game. It was pitiful man…she only had 3 kids show up to play and so they “drafted??? 2 players from a couple different teams just to have enough to play. To top it off, they were missing their best player, who is also the best player in the league. It is great to have a player like that on one aspect, as they should win just about every game when she is healthy; but it also teaches bad habits that allows everyone else to kind of stand around and wait for her to take the ball and score. The down side, obviously, is when she is not there and no one knows what the hell to do. This game was ugly, man. Not only were they not used to playing together due to the two new girls but they didn’t know what to do offensively. They actually learned quite a bit during this game due to her being gone. However, the growing pains were immense as they were blown out of the gym 40-2. Abby had fun playing against her good buddy, Emma Hellmich – and they were matched up against each other for most of the game. Abby’s defense was very good as she had 2 steals, 3 blocked shots and 1 forced turnover. Emma did not score until they moved Abby to center to stop this big girl who dominated the game. That gal only scored twice after Abby started guarding her. Offensively, though, they were all very tentative, including Bu who only attempted one shot and had one turnover. Abby got in to a bad habit of stopping her dribble too far from the basket and then felt too insecure to take the shot. After the game, both Emma and Abby were named to the travelling squad and will play Monday night in Batesville. Emma’s dad, Trevor will coach the gals. I taped the Daytona Twin 125’s and thought it was cool that Gordon was hooking up the teenager, Trevor Baine who was driving for the Wood Brothers. They looked good and I wouldn’t doubt that we see that combo come Sunday. Midterms came out that day and Abby again led the pack, here at home. She *barely* missed straight A’s, coming up just a few percentage points short with a B+ in math again. Luke did fairly well with 3 B’s and an A in his favorite subject – spelling. Matt on the other hand has struggled. When he missed due to being ill a few weeks back, it really put him behind and he has never been able to catch up, falling farther and farther behind. Gone for now is the Xbox again until the grades are brought back up. We had a little talk to decide how he’s going to catch himself up and made contact with teachers to see what the issue is. He drives us bonkers when he does this kind of stuff because he will inevitably end up on his feet like he always does; but we could do without the drama.

Friday couldn’t come soon enough for Ann and I this week. It was a very long week and when you work hard, it is nice to play hard once in a while. Dennis & I went out after work to a local pub called Caddies for drinks until his wife got off work and Ann could get in to town. Ann & I went out to eat with Dennis & Lenny at the Roadhouse where it was margarita night for us – we all ended up getting one. Ann went with a cranberry one, Dennis had a strawberry, Lenny had some kind of mango-y one and I just had a regular one, but we all upgraded to the top shelf tequila, Patron, which was very smooth! We had a great time with them and the night flew by. Thanks goes out to Matt for watching his siblings for us again (thanks little buddy). Ann had a little stomach issue and had to limit herself to only one drink, but was eventually able to choke down most of her filet. When Ann called to check on the kids, Luke answered and said he didn’t know where Matt was…but knowing Luke, we assumed he was “tricking??? us. However, Matt soon got on the phone and said he had just come in from the backyard, where there had been an issue. There had been a backyard massacre, involving what appeared to be a bunny rabbit. Our dogs love to chase the little critters that wander in to our yard. Matt was brave enough to go out and grab a shovel from the shed and chuck it over the fence for us. However, when he got it picked up; he noticed it wasn’t a rabbit at all – it was a opossum…and it wasn’t dead either! 😉 Matt, however, was tough and completed his duty…though he said it freaked him out a little. LOL We were up early on Saturday morning to take Luke out to his basketball game at the YMCA. They played the white team which is sponsored by the corner store where Ann & Maryann both used to work part time years ago. They had an all-boy team and were very confident coming in to the game but quickly realized that a good-coached team, regardless of the sex, will beat a sloppy team every time. This game was no different in that Lukey & the Pussycats put a hurting on this team winning easily in a game that was never even close. Luke played well, but admitted to being a little nervous to be playing in front of Grandma, who came to her first game this season. Luke played a good game, as always. He really shined on defense this game. He went 1-9 from the floor, had 3 assists and 2 turnovers. He had 13 rebounds and really fought for all the lose balls. He also had 3 steals and 1 forced turnover. Their team is a lot of fun to watch.

Afterwards, Abby had Megan over to spend the night as her mom and her fiancé went up to Indy for a charity gig that had Diana Ross, among others, performing! The kids were able to get outside for the first time on a weekend in a long time…although it was a bit chilly, only getting up to about 50 in the afternoon. They played kickball for hours in the front yard with several of the neighborhood kids joining in as well. Luke’s best friend, Alex, also came over for the afternoon. Ann left with Amy shortly after lunch and went to Greenwood to do some shopping and didn’t come home till bedtime. I tried to take a nap all day long but didn’t have much luck. The Nationwide race at Daytona was pretty exciting, especially with Danica Patrick doing well and even leading a lap. Abby & Megan gave the Lola & Molly a long-needed bath. Now Ann wants to see if Dee can clip them down to get rid of all the matted fur the poor things have developed. On Sunday, we took it pretty easy again, doing just the basic household chores but otherwise being pretty lazy. It has been a nice weekend after such a hectic week at work. The Daytona 500 was the most exciting one I can remember in years as the new blacktop (costing $20 million) was just the thing this great race needed. Gordon was wrecked early and the youngster, Trevor Baine (who had been practicing with Jeff all week), won the race – and just turned 20 years old yesterday! Obviously, I was pulling for the #24 car, but my heart was hoping for Little E to win since it was such a big weekend for his father with several tributes to him; this being the 10th anniversary of his death. NASCAR lost its swagger that day and has never really regained it since… Having the #21 Wood Brothers car in victory lane was still pretty cool though. After the race, we watched the recorded of the big game from earlier in the day with the rematch of # 11 Boilers taking on the #2 Ohio St Buckeyes. They increased their undefeated run of home games by shocking the world and winning going away. E’twaun Moore had a career game, putting in a cool 38 points on the Big Ten leaders. With this victory, they are only one game back in the Big 10 standings now. Boy have we got a buttload of videos to share this week!
Leading off this section, we have five new videos from this week, including two Abby basketball games and Luke’s game from Saturday as well. Following those five are three old videos from requests I received last week of our wedding back in ’95. When I transferred it over, I ended up with 7 videos; I have the first three here for you today…enjoy! And finally, we have a BUNCH of videos. This week, I caught Grace Potter & the Nocturnals on Lopez at Night and Lukas Nelson & Promise of the Real on Letterman. I was absolutely blown away with both bands and had to look up all their releases (which I now have) as well as some live videos, which I am sharing below…

And now let’s move on to the final portion of this week’s blog; the Waybac section. Leading off, we have three more of Dean’s slides from his collection in the 1950’s, including people I have no idea who they are; then we jump way up to about ’91 for Dad in a Halloween outfit (of which, I’ve still not heard the story); Aunt Dorothy & Uncle Timmie at the Brown Family Christmas at Brett & Tammie’s house at the end of ’91; Rob, Trudi, Homer and Aunt Dot at the Wisconsin cabin in about the summer of ’91; Rob at Marilou & Kenny’s house; a few pictures of Tammie & Brett’s baby shower around ’93; a front shot of the Dream House in Rossville and the grace sites all in about ’93 or so…

Finally, we have a summer day out at the park in 2001 with Matt & Abby on the island at the park, Abby swinging and going down the slide; later that night playing in the pool with Ann; enjoying a homemade chocolate shake with me and then playing school at my old school desk in the playroom; then two pictures of Abby’s 4th birthday party with Matt & Brayton eating pizza and Mom hanging out in the living room.

Another great week of pictures and videos Tom!!! Great games of Abby and Luke. Now to the wedding video….I cried again thru most of it!! I could hardly wait from one to the other so I could see what was next!! I loved also seeing the people in the pews that came to share in your special day….Doc and Bev, Aunt Norma and Uncle Ralph, Sharon & Dan and Katie & Nathan and Vird & Belinda and Dena Marie. Wow have we all changed!!! So good to see Granny then too. I believe that is one of the last times I saw her. The last time may have been at Hanks viewing in Lafayette. So sad to realize that some are gone now. That is what makes these videos so precious!! Again, thanks Tom for doing all you do on this blog to keep your mom and dad up on the kids and yourselves. Take care and we love you all. XXXOOO’s
