And our Time is Flyin’ – See the Candle Burnin’ Low

It was a great week that went fast as usual. The weather is in another state of flux as we saw it dip down in to the 40s and rise to the upper 80s. We again only had three kids to take to school this week. It seemed Ann, Mom, Sandy & I were constantly taxiing back and forth to something or another. Ann and I are so thankful that those two are in our lives – without them we couldn’t allow the kids to do what they do… We kicked things off quickly on Monday with Grandma taking Abby to volleyball and then on to tap dance class. Luke missed soccer practice as we left work early and headed down to the Ohio River to see the Pirates take on Lawrenceburg, an hour or so away. Matt and his JV football team played very well. Matt himself played defensive tackle and nose guard on one side of the ball, center and guard on offense, guard and up-back on the punt team, as well as playing on the kickoff and kickoff return teams. Needless to say, he was pooped by the time the game ended! His play continues to improve with each game. He played nearly every play from scrimmage and with good reason. He consistently beats everyone off the snap – on both sides of the ball. He made two nice tackles, had a few near-sacks, almost had a “strip-6??? where he ripped the ball from the runner and started to run it back until the referee blew the play dead…and then almost had a “pick-six??? as well where he nearly intercepted the ball and ran it in for a TD…only to have the ball fall at his feet, incomplete! The coach is starting to work some plays in where he pulls out from the guard position and runs out to the flat to be the lead blocker on end-around plays. He also had a very nice pancake. It was a dominating performance in all aspects of the game for Greensburg and they won easily, 20-8.

It rained on Tuesday…all day. Abby has soccer practice in it and was soaked afterwards. I finally got the truck back that night. JT did a great job with it. She’s all ready for him to start driving. Ann has already begun looking at driving schools. He will be eligible this month, I believe! Can you believe it?? It continued to rain through the night and in to the next day, finally letting up shortly after lunch. It was dry enough when we got home that I was able to mow and trim over at Mom & Gigi’s house. It had been a few weeks since I mowed and over a month since I trimmed, so it took me a couple hours to get everything done that night. It was much cooler after the rain moved out. After having shorts on the first few days this week, it was back to long pants and sweatshirts on Thursday. Abby went straight from volleyball to soccer again that night. In lieu of practice however, the girls went out to the high school field to watch a match up against #2 Lawrenceburg. Abby was recognized at halftime of the game, as was her entire U-12 team. She was supposed to help out as a ball girl during the game, but instead spent most of the game with her friends, playing on their phones and talking. It was cold out there and we all wrapped up in blankets. We came home and the kids and I played football out in the front yard until supper time. Sandy let me borrow her flash drive off her camera and there were some good ones of Matt playing football at the previous couple JV football games and Grace at karate practice. The sun was doing some freaky things with the sky. In the morning, the sun was huge and was a brilliant color of orange. At sunset, there was a lovely aurora that appeared as an odd prism in the clouds. The pictures don’t do it justice. Abby also posted a picture from last weekend at Paul & Dayla’s house of her with Jarrett, our good friend Wayne’s son.

Friday started out in the mid-forties for the 2nd day in a row. It was Abby’s 12th birthday and we heard from Grandma O in the morning and Grandma B in the afternoon. Ann made birthday pancakes and sausage for breakfast – complete with a candle! We all got to enjoy that present. She opened up a few presents afterwards and then it was off to school. Abby was asked to participate on the Academic (think “Brain Game???) team for her junior high school. Abby had volleyball practice after school, Luke had soccer practice and then we all went out to Matt’s varsity football game against South Dearborn. Matt, however, could only watch as he got zero playing time. The Pirates (probably due a lack of Matt) ended up losing a game they should’ve won. In fact, it was less they were defeated as more that they simply didn’t win. They made far too many mistakes and ran out of gas again. The biggest issue with the varsity team is that they don’t play enough kids – many go both ways most of the game – and don’t present a balanced attack on offense. Anyhow, we took Abby out for dinner out to Buffalo Wings & Rings after the game. He was a good sport and continues to work hard in practice, waiting for his shot to prove himself.

We were back up early on Saturday morning to get Abby out to the soccer fields for picture day before her game. She played the Batesville Pizza King team. Things started off good as Abby had a quick shot on goal that just missed to the right. From there, things became difficult as the girls ran in to a buzz saw of a team. She played nearly all the minutes of the game on offense, but found herself having to help out the defense for most of it. The game was actually closer than the final score indicated, 5-1. The game was played primarily on one end of the field as the girls simply couldn’t get the ball past midfield. The girls are getting better, this was just a really, really good team. Afterwards, Luke also had soccer pictures before his game. Thankfully, we finally got a day where both games were at home and were not simultaneous! We actually got to watch both full games…yeah! Luke’s team underwent a huge change as the other U-10 team folded and was integrated in to his team. It obviously meant fewer minutes for all the boys. The new kids have a bit of a learning curve as they gave up 6 goals vs. the Sunman Blimpie team. Thankfully, our original team scored 6 and eventually the coach got a balanced team on the field. It was a fun game to watch, ending in a tie. Our friend Jeff officiated the game (at our urging at the varsity football game last night). Luke scored another goal. He also played goalie – making five saves and giving up no goals. Afterwards, Ann took Abby out shopping for her birthday and they didn’t get home until late that evening. Meanwhile, the boys worked out in the yard at home (including removing our dead Oak tree) and then went to Gma and Gigi’s house to work in their yard, digging up several of their old shrubs the ladies wanted removed. Matt has gotten so strong, it is impressive. We came home, showered and got Pizza King delivered. Luke had Alex over for the night and the boys all fell asleep on the couches…but not before the gals came home and we all had chocolate birthday pie! Yum!!

On Sunday, we did our weekly chores around the house and gave it a little extra shine as we hosted Abby’s birthday party. Can you believe she’s already 12? Ann made us meatball subs, per Abby’s request, for lunch. Afterwards, we had Gma, Gigi, Phyllis, Dick, Deanna, Jamie and Grace over for cake and ice cream. Amy’s mother-in-law made the cake again – this time it was a lime green cake with a monkey, which was right up her alley! We had a great time and I still can’t believe my Bu is ‘tween-ager…

Next up, we have our videos; including five new family ones and several miscellaneous from around the web:

We wind up this week’s entry with our Waybac section. Leading off, we start in the 80’s: a couple pictures from my 1985-86 high school yearbook that I found online of our homecoming football game; Grandpaw Brown, his sister Aunt Dorothy and her husband Uncle Timmie at my high school graduation party in June of ’87, also up in LaPorte; then Timmie and Uncle Kenny and Aunt Marilou Hauser (and Rob out in back) at their home in Rossville who were hosting another fish fry family reunion in the summer of ’87; and finally Grandpaw Brown at our home in LP for what I believe may be his birthday.

Next we head to the 90s: we start in LP for the Bryan Family Christmas in ’92 (I’m digging that pink shirt); Matt and Dad B on Aquaholic in June ’98, up on Pine Lake in LP; then on a riding lawnmower together in Rossville of June of ’98; and finally Matt with Grandma B and I in the kiddy pool at the Sand Pebble in Treasure Island in May of ’99.

We wrap up in the new millennium: playing T-ball at the YMCA in June of 2000; Christmas Eve at Gma & Gigi’s house in 2000 and then Christmas Day 2000 at our Main St home.
