I Lit a Fire with the Love You Left Behind…

It was another tough week. We said goodbye to a patriarch in our extended family as we grow closer and closer to that level. On top of that, boy the weeks are starting to really fly by for us now. Abby & Luke are entering into the heart of their sports schedules as school winds down. Matt is getting anxious as finals draw near and right on its heels is the first major change to our immediate and close-knit family. Ann continues getting everything ready for this huge event in our lives. I recruited Maryann to help me look for a good car for Matt to take to college. We have a lot of pictures to share this week, but we start with last weekend. As promised, we have pictures of Abby’s May Day tourney and Rob & Sharon’s visit from last weekend…

It was a lovely day on Monday and an awesome week! Abby had a track meet vs. Rushville. It was her final home meet of the season and likely her last of the year where she will participate. She did not do well in the long jump. However, she set a new personal record in the high jump by jumping 4’! It was Cinco de Mayo and Matt was in the mood to celebrate. By the time we finished with track, dance was already over and softball was just about over as well so we decided to go out to eat at El Reparo. It was Margarita time and we got a free t-shirt as well. It was surprisingly busy for a Monday night.

It warmed up nicely on Tuesday. Abby Student Council; Luke & I bball practice with Bryan & Drew at their Randall bldg; Abby track; Ann/Abby & Angie/Hannah worked concession stands at ball diamonds to raise money for all-star baseball (thanks ladies!); Election Day (primary anyhow) so Ann & I voted after work. Luke & I went to get a drink for Gigi (as we have done every year since Matt was 2) but when we came out of Speedway, the van wouldn’t start. Matt came to help and although we got it started it died again and never started again after that. So Luke & Matt took Gigi her drink at the courthouse as I called for a tow truck. I waited 2 hours before finally going home to wait on a phone call – which didn’t come until late that night. I had it delivered to Acra’s and called them in the morning…I think it was just missing Seth in the service dept… Abby brought home her year book from school and she was in a couple of pictures. In addition, we got Matt’s graduation party invitations, so friends and family should keep a look out for these next week!
Ann & I finally got to share a ride in to work for the first time in like 3 weeks. Ann had an After Prom meeting right after work and I dropped off Abby at practice and took Luke to his baseball games. We faced the Royals – a first year team. We came out like gangbusters. Drew pitched the first inning and although he gave up a run, he also struck out 2. We came up to bat and scored 7 runs (limit in this league) and that was all we needed. Luke came in to pitch the next two innings and had 5 strikeouts and one groundout. Finally, Bryant pitched the 4th and final inning and had 3 straight strikeouts! To say the least, our pitching dominated again. I hope that pitching holds up! Luke was 2 for 2 with a pair of doubles and two runs scored. We jumped out to a 7-0 lead after the 1st inning. After that, we pulled off dogs so to not embarrass their kids. Our record is now 2 – 0. Luke, Abby & K went to Taco Bell afterwards for celebratory dinner.

We took the day off from school/work to go up to Kokomo to bury our dear Uncle Dan. Dan Smith was the kind of man that would play on the floor with you as a child. He would play outside and throw a ball. He would let you ride in the back of his pick up truck as he went around and inspected all his parks. He was funny and always tried to make you smile. I will be forever indebted to him and Sharon for helping to take care of Rob & I after Mom’s aneurism. I have heard some great stories of his adventures in Los Angeles in the 70s. He was just an all-around cool guy. He will be dearly missed – especially by his wife, children and grandchildren. It was a very nice ceremony, highlighted by a poignant speech by my cousin Katie. It was amazing and there was no way I could’ve done it. We had good food at the wake and had some good conversations with the whole Bryan-side of the family. We headed back and had to turn on the A/C for the first time this year. It was 90+ in the house! We got back way too late for track. The girls did go tan and then went on to dance. Meanwhile, the boys watched the NFL draft. Matt was sure the Cowboys would pick Johnny “Football.??? It was not to be, though. The ‘Boys passed on the starting QB and picked an OT from Indy…while Manziel ended up in Cleveland. Matt took me to Acra’s, where Seth had the van ready for us after discovering we had a bad battery (thank God).

I took Ann out to eat at Arni’s for an early Mother’s Day date at lunchtime. We did not have softball play-in games and so Luke & I focused on getting the lawn mowed. We started over at Mom & Gigi’s house. After mowing both lawns, we loaded up all their bushes from their front yard. The ladies had grown weary of keeping up with them and decided to rip them all out. Luke & I loaded up the truck and then dumped them in the WTRE dumpster. There were so many bushes that we had to stack them 8’ tall in the dumpster! We came home and found that the mower’s power-assisted wheels had stopped working (something else to get repaired!) so we had to push mow the front before the storms came. Ann had late-night scrapbooking. Matt was out with Andy so Luke & Abby got Arby’s drive through and I got Chinese takeout from the Panda Garden. We have lots of social media pictures to share again this week, including Matt with his girl next door; Matt with his date and friends at After Prom; Abby with girls after last dance competition; Uncle Dan with his youngest grandchild; the Scheu’s take over the Pacers playoffs game – including Joey & Jack meeting Slick Leonard!!; Aunt June w/ Lindz; our great friends Bryan & Angie…and their goofy son, Drew; the Lafayette Jeff runners up and then state champion basketball team in ’63 (with Uncle Chuck) and ’64; Grandma Bryan with Aunt Sharon; our friends at Jimmy Johns; a great Calvin & Hobbes panel; Matt’s grad party invites; the girl next door’s invites and an old picture of downtown Greensburg from the ‘30s.

We were up early and on the road to Columbus on Saturday morning. We had a softball tourney for Abby. However, Mother Nature had other ideas. It rained overnight and continued raining all morning to the point where they had to cancel the entire tourney due to all the flooding. We parked next to the Drakes, who were there for Conner’s U8 tourney. We came home and got Matt before going to lunch at El Chile Poblano. Next we went to Rural King and got flowers for Ann for Mother’s Day. We also checked out the baby chicks that Abby wants very badly. We picked up fertilizer for our yard and Mom & Sandy’s two yards. The dandelions are really bad this year. We got a couple new gas cans and some other odds and ends. I really like that store more each time I go in there. We came back and planted the flowers – well Matt went to sleep, I think, but cccLuke & Abby did a great job. Some of the flowers they picked out and planted included petunias, vincas, salvias, geraniums, impatiens, Sunpatiens, and foxgloves. Ann really enjoyed them and the flowers turned out great. We went car shopping for Matt and looked at several cars around town. There were a few that he liked (and I could fit in our budget!). Luke loved it because he saw all kinds of cars he wanted too – including Mustangs and Rat Rods. We had Wings & Rings for dinner and then watched NASCAR as Jeff finally won #89 and maintained his lead atop the points championship yet another week! The Cowboys had a pretty good draft, really focusing where they need to – on defense. I missed the inaugural running of the Indy road course race and I have no idea who won but I guess the mayor got hurt at the very start of the race.
Sunday was Mother’s Day. Ann made a big lunch and had Mom & Sandy over. She also invited Dee, Jamie & Grace. She made spaghetti, garlic bread, salad and brownies! Afterward, the kids, Jamie & I played a big game of PIG. While Matt & I retreated to our couches, Abby & Luke continued to play outside and enjoy another lovely 70 degree plus day. Ann, Matt & I took naps the rest of the afternoon in between doing our normal weekly chores. We dug out our old photo albums from 1996-2004 and the kids had a heyday going through them as Ann began compiling a special scrapbook for Matthew.
