Another busy week is in the rearview mirror. It was a full week with everyone busy as we’ve come to expect around the Scheu abode. Matt worked his butt off and is really starting to slim down. Abby continued to work hard with her dance and is driving every chance she gets. Luke had an absolutely crazy week with football, baseball and school. We saw everything in terms of weather, as is typical for the month of May in this area of the country. That made it all that much tougher to know that we again missed out on Week 19 festivities this year.
It rained for the 3rd day in a row on Monday. Matt went back to work for Bryan. Luke had football camp. Abby had jazz class at Dixon. Luke trimmed the back yard for me and then we threw 60 pitches in the back lot at the end of the day. Matt had Andy over to hang out in the family room.
I was in early on Tuesday for Omelet Day at work. We cooked 35 meals for the 1st shift staff and then treated ourselves to a huge meal. I didn’t even eat lunch because I was so full. Abby was in early for Student Council. It was a perfect day in the mid-sixties with bright sun, soft blue sky and fluffy white clouds…ahh. Luke had football camp again at the elementary school and then had pitching practice at Bryan’s Randal building. Matt was out early and slept through the night, missing some great cheeseburgers!
Luke was back at football camp on Wednesday. He again did double duty by heading to baseball practice afterwards. Abby went to El Reparo after school with her Pirateers friends before coming back to school for a meeting/practice. Ann picked up the Pacifica from the shop while I trimmed at Mom & Sandy’s house and then later mowed out front at our house. That night was the American Idol finale. Ann & I couldn’t believe that Clark lost – it’s rigged! They announced that evening that all three judges would return next year for what will be the 15th and final season of the show. In fact, this week was the season finale for several of our shows and this year we have many of our favorite shows having their series finale. We have lots of new social media pictures to share this week: Aunt June & Lynz; the ladies in our family; Tammy & Leila; Aunt Sally; Kathy & Jake; Rosie and her mom; Aunt Sharon; Chris & Trish’s boys; Steph & Haley; June & Lynz again; Connor’s 21st; Angie and her girls; Crum; Bu; Slicer baseball; Bu & Bailey; Aunt Sharon’s view for Week 19 and with her momma back in the day; Grace Potter’s new LP is due out soon; Robin Williams; Tammy & Leila; Tyson; Jacie’s news article; Calvin panel; the AI finalists; Stickbug and Stinkbug; Tammy & Leila yet again; BB King’s passing; the Frozen Custard; Star Wars Hot Wheels; a great picture from Week 19 a few years ago; Dad at the Grand Floridian (?); Purdue alum Mike Alstott will go in to the ring of honor in Tampa Bay; and the many voices of Harry…
Thursday was a warm one. We turned on the big air conditioner for the 2nd straight evening. Luke was pooped after having football camp and baseball practice yet again. Ann & Abby had tap class while I mowed the backyard. Speaking of our favorite shows, we had good news/bad news from the Simpsons camp. The good news was the show was renewed for an amazing 27th and 28th seasons. The bad news is that the great Harry Shearer will not be a part of it. He voices a dozen of the main characters in the show. Although the producers say they aren’t going to kill off the characters, it’ll be interesting to see if they find replacement voice-over artists or if they get creative with the characters in some other way. And we were saddened to hear of the passing of BB King, who passed away in his sleep over night. He was one of the last of the blues greats.
We had more rain on Friday. Matt found it very hard to get out of bed that morning, not only being sore and tired but also mentally worn-out with some interpersonal issues with his friends. Luke had his final day of football camp. After work, we headed down to North Vernon with Luke and the Titans as they played in the Calvin Strong Spring Classic baseball tournament. Our 1st game was against Brownstown. We looked good for 4 innings when the wheels fell off the cart again. We were down 2-1 but gave up 6 in the final frame and lost again, 8-2. Luke played 1st base the whole night was not immune to the blunders, committing 2 or 3 errors himself in a game that saw nearly a dozen errors. The boys were surely tired from football earlier in the day. Luke did make several nice plays as well, defensively. At the plate he was 0-2 with a fly out to right and a ground out as well. It was a humid night and the field was poorly lit in the final couple innings, adding to the difficulty. Matt did not come with us, working very late and in fact we actually beat him home that night. He has been a whipped pup this week and was very thankful to have the week off.
We got to sleep in a little on Saturday before heading back down to Luke’s baseball tourney again. Matt travelled with us to North Vernon to see Luke play for the first time this year. Abby stayed in town to attend the Suicide-Prevention Walk with her BFF Megan. Luke and the Titans played the Indy Inferno for their 2nd game. He again played 1st base but this time had no errors. He was excited that Matt was attending the game. He was 2-2 at the plate w/ a pair of singles – 1 that went to the fence in left center. It was easily the hardest hit of the year for him as his confidence is starting to come back. The other one he hustled out a blooper to right field. On the bases he stole 1 base and scored a run…but he was also picked off 1st while talking to Coach Messer (at least he said it was on Bryan!). :0) We were down 3-4 going in to the 4th inning but we again fell apart in the last inning and lost 15-3. We dodged the rain all day but as the rain got heavier, we weren’t sure we would get the game in. Although we did get it in, the skies opened up as we left the ball park. The game behind us never even got started. We stopped for lunch at Las Chalupas, which may be our new favorite Mexican restaurant…or we may have just been that hungry! We came home to nap but that never came to fruition. Abby & Megan came home and were a bit rowdy. We did some weekly household chores in the early evening before heading over to the Messers for dinner on the grill and a cocktail or two. The boys whooped the girls in euchre and the kids enjoyed Top Gun in the theater room. Abby was kind enough to drive her parents home late that night.
We again were able to sleep in on Sunday. It was very sunny in the early morning, but were disappointed when we fell back to sleep and woke up to an overcast sky. It was hotter today and very humid. We again dodged the rain all day. We brought the pop-up gazebo and were glad we did so as there was one downpour that kept us dry and then it again began to rain hard as we were leaving after the game. Luke and the Titans were back at it once again in North Vernon. This time, we faced the Thunder. This was a team that beat us pretty handy early in the year (or was it late last year?). We were surprised to see that Luke started in left field. He had never played left before and I’m not sure he even practiced out there. He made a couple plays but he also had an error and a ball got over his head one time as well. After a couple innings out by us, he sat out the 3rd inning to get warmed up with Bryan to come back in to pitch the 4th and 5th innings for us. He did very well for the team. He struck out four and walked two. He did not give up any hits but they did get one run on him. At the plate, he again batted 5th in the lineup. He went 0-2 today but hit the ball very hard, so we’ll take it. In his first at-bat he hit a shot right at the right fielder who gloved it on one hop and fired to 1st base to get him by an eyelash. In his second at-bat, he hit a one-hop smash right to short who threw him out by three steps. We actually kept it together in the final inning this time, mounting a comeback by loading the bases with two outs but couldn’t do anything with it and fell short of a victory, 3-6. On our way out of the ballpark, we happened to see the Drakes and stopped to say hello. We again stopped in for lunch at La Chalupas there in town and then came home to cool down, get in a nap and took it easy the rest of the night.
