Baby, You can Drive my Car…

Hello again and welcome back to the Scheu Family Blog. We enjoyed another fast week, here in south-central Indiana. Matt continued to study hard at U Indy. Abby had an eventful week and crossed another threshold. Luke focused again on track and school. Mom & Sandy continued to prepare for their big move. Ann had a setback on her knee rehabilitation. And I continued the battle of the bulge. Let’s get right to it…
Monday was a lovely day in the lower 60s – the perfect way to start the week. Monday was Leap Day for this year. Ann & I both had long days; in fact none of us got home until late that night. I had a clean dental checkup before I headed over to Columbus for work. I managed to get out on time that night and picked up Luke & Drew to go to the Y. While I walked on the outside track, the boys played basketball inside. Abby had her first academic meet in Batesville after school. She got back so late that she missed jazz class at DDS. Luke had track practice after school and then after we got back from the YMCA, we did homework. As I did with the other two kids, I had to re-teach Luke how to do math properly. Here in Greensburg, they teach little shortcuts that are fine for beginning and some intermediate math problems, but once they become advanced (as Abby is now learning), you have to do it the correct way without taking shortcuts. But first we have pictures from late last week, including damage to the facility when a jeep hit it and several pictures from last weekend’s volleyball tourney, where Abby and the Turtles came up one game short of the finals. Thanks to Shawna for another great year…

Tuesday was a cold, rainy day. We even had severe thunderstorms at lunchtime. Ann got up early to make breakfast for the kids who had ISTEP tests that day. Luke had track practice after school. Gma brought the kids and Jaden over to our house afterwards. Later, Megan and her boyfriend joined us and Ann made a huge pot of spaghetti while I hopped on the treadmill. Later the kids went out for ice cream and “cruising.???
Ann was up again early to cook breakfast for out ISTEP kids. The rain was gone, but it was a cool start and everything was a little frozen. Thankfully, the road was clear and so there were no delays and it was a smooth ride in to work. The sun was out most of the day and it warmed just enough for me to get out and walk on the People Trail again. I snapped off a few pix of some of the sites on my routes this week. It was the start of sectional play for boys’ basketball. Greensburg hosted round one, as they do each year. That night there were two games, though neither of them featured the home team. Abby was supposed to work the coach check for a Pirateers fundraiser, but not one person used them – despite a full house. So she instead went on to work at Dixon.
We woke up to snow on the ground on Thursday morning. It warmed slightly through the morning and by mid-afternoon all evidence of it was gone. Although it was chilly, I was able to get out on the People Trail again after wok. Ann had a doctor appointment for her knees that afternoon. Although the left one is healing normally, her right one does not share that same prognosis. There are a couple of treatment options possible but all roads may lead her to a possible knee replacement in a just a few short years. Later she and Shawna had another After-Prom meeting – an event that is fast approaching. We still aren’t sure if Abby will be attending the big dance this year or not. Luke had a big day with yet more ISTEP testing and then had track practice. We spoke to Coach Messer, who said that pitching practice was on-hold for a few weeks due to his busy schedule. Abby went out with Jaden after school and then they went to her tap class at Dixon Dance Studio later that night.

Ann made breakfast for our ISTEP kids again on Friday morning. It was a fast day and before I knew it, I was out walking the People Train again on a warmer afternoon. Just as I finished, Julie & Megan were pulling in to the facility. Megan came home with me, where she met up with her BFF for the weekend. Meanwhile, Ann took Abby to the BMV for her big driving test to get her license. …And although she drew the old grumpy lady that has the reputation of flunking kids, she passed with flying colors and now we have four drivers in the family! Way to go, Bu!! We celebrated that night with dinner out at ElRep but when we got there we decided to leave due to an hour wait. We took separate cars – Abby drove the kids (her, Luke, Megan and Jaden) and Ann & I were in the other car. As we were leaving the restaurant, there was a unique driving situation with an anxious/rude driver pressuring Abby that nearly saw me get out of the car. Ann had to calm me while I was shouting inside the car. It’s weird seeing your baby out vying for herself. Not sure I’m quite ready for it, to be honest. Instead, Abs chose to go to BWR for dinner. It was another long wait, which I guess is great for our little local economy. It was a nice dinner. Afterwards, Abby took her friends out driving while Ann, Luke & I came home. We both had a couple of cocktails at dinner and it didn’t take long for us to fall asleep on the couch. The kids got back at a decent time and Megan & Britney ended up spending the night with us. We have lots of social media pictures to share this week: Abby solo and with friends; Aunt Sally in FLA; Scheu cousins; my buddy Mark from LP; Purdue had some big wins this week; a couple Calvin & Hobbes panels; Luke got his championship t-shirt this week; a couple of Bu with her two new favorite things – her license and boyfriend; the crew out to eat at BWR; Luke driving the van; more Scheu cousins; The Drews and our good friends Bryan & Angie got to meet Coach Pagano this week.

Luke & I were up early on Saturday morning and ran a couple errands before the girls got out of bed. We grabbed some breakfast and then he practiced driving out at North high school for about 45 minutes. He’s getting pretty good. We pretty much bummed around the house the rest of the day, which was nice. The girls ended up getting picked up mid-morning after going to breakfast at Stacks with Ann & Abby. Once they left, Ann & Bu went to Columbus to work for a while. Later, Abby went out again with Megan/Britney and the boyfriends. Ann made cheesy popcorn for dinner. The kids went out to ride 4-wheelers until late before coming home to hang out until the wee hours of the morning and the girls spent the night again. Congrats to the Pirate boys’basketball team for defeating Madison to win the Sectional championship that night!
Sunday was another lovely day, allowing us to turn off the heat and crack open a couple windows. We said good-bye to Megan and then Britney. Abby drove Ann to Parkside Lanes where Annie again joined Amy, Mom, Sandy and the gals at WTRE for the annual fundraiser, Bowl for Kids’ Sake. This year, the team had a superheroes theme. You will understand more when you see the pictures below. Afterwards, Abby drove them up to give Matt his meds he will need to take this week in prep for his wisdom teeth extractions next weekend. They had lunch with him before going shopping all afternoon. Meanwhile back at the ranch, Luke rearranged his room all day while I did weekly household chores and watched the recorded UFC fights from last night and the NASCAR races from this weekend as well as the final regular season game for the Boilers. Lukey eventually got outside to play and enjoy the weather for a little while in the late afternoon, which was a wonderful way to end our week.
