She’s only Seventeen…Seventeen…

It was another crazy week at the Scheu home. Luke focused mainly on football and school. Abby played a trio of soccer games on top of all the other stuff that she does each week. We continued to try and track down the source of that nasty headache that won’t go away. Matt came home for the weekend and is doing well in school (he reportedly hasn’t skipped any classes this year yet!). Not sure what is up with the dogs. They have their flea/tick meds but they have licked off the fur from their butts and bases of their tails…maybe allergies? Whatever the reason, they look silly. Ann continued to battle knee pain while I continued the battle of the bulge. We had the house open for most of the week until storms rolled through and brought back that darned humidity. And our sweet little Bu turned 17 this week. Hello again and welcome back to the Scheu Family Blog.
It was back to work and school on Monday morning. We all seemed to have trouble dragging our sorry butts out of bed that morning. It turned out to be a gorgeous day, topping out around 80 with no humidity…an absolutely perfect late-summer day. I walked about three miles after work. Luke had a good dental checkup before heading to football. Abby had soccer practice after school then went on to the team dinner. She later went out with Kirk then the two came here to hang out for a while. Luke & I practiced football out in the front yard as the sun set on the neighborhood. We ended up in Mr. Green’s yard, practicing onside kicks and pass routes until dinnertime. Ann made spaghetti for Luke to get a good pasta meal in his belly for lots of energy at tomorrow’s game. I tried to stay up late and watch the NFL double header on MNF, but ended watching with my eyelids closed. Abby’s school pictures came in and man are they great. Here are some random pictures from this week.

Tuesday was another gorgeous day. Abby was in early for Student Council. I walked 3 miles after work, Ann traveled to East Central for Abby’s soccer game. She played both varsity and JV. The varsity was up first and lost badly, 0-7. The JV was closer but really more of the same, losing again, 0-3. Meanwhile, I came home to watch Luke & the 7th grade Pirates face cross-town rivals, North Decatur. He was trilled to see Gma, Gigi, Phyllis & Dick form a little cheer block for him! The boys dominated the game this year, beating a team made up of both 7th and 8th graders, 30-0. This raises their record to 4-3 on the year. Luke’s stats for the game: Offense- 1 rush for 11 yds and a TD (6 pts) and 2 nasty pancake blocks. He played both halfback and fullback. Defense- he had 6 tackles, 1 sack and 1 tipped ball from the outside linebacker (both right and left-side) positions. Special teams- 5 kickoffs: 25, 43, 11 (OS), 40, 35. I taped both 7th and 8th grade games and uploaded them to Hudl for the kids and staff. I missed talking ball with Bryan, who was out of town. I took Luke & Drew to Wendy’s to celebrate the win afterwards. They enjoyed what is likely the final ride this summer in the back of the pickup on the way out to the Messer compound.

Wednesday was the 4-yr anniversary of Mom’s burial. It seems so much longer than four years. So much has changed for our family since her passing. Ann was off work to take Abby to more doctor appointments for her head. She eventually made it to soccer practice, but didn’t dress due to being up so late last night. She could only sleep a couple hours before her tests today. She then went to the team dinner and then came home to pick up Ann and go on to jazz class. She came home and went straight to bed. Luke had football practice and I walked 4 miles after work.
Thursday was a long day. It was another nice day. I walked a couple miles after work that evening, despite a late start. Luke had a football scrimmage vs. the 6th graders at his old stomping grounds – North Park. Ann & I left work and headed to Shelbyville for her second soccer game of the week. She played about 20 minutes of varsity time. They could’ve won this game but the officiating was just awful. The parents got on them pretty good. Still, the Lady Pirates lost again, 0-2. We stopped at place there in town to eat at a good Mexican place called El Meson that Ann’s friend had recommended.

Abby’s 17th birthday was on Friday. If we are friends on Facebook, you may have seen me embarrassing her with a slew of old pictures. It was a fast day for me, thankfully. However, I did not get a walk in that night due to the large band of thunderstorms. Abby was in early for Jr Optimist meeting before school then had soccer practice afterwards. Luke had football practice after school. As I came home, I was happy to see Matt’s car parked in it’s usual place, out in front of the house. That meant that the house was full and that all was right in the world again. It always seems out of balance when he’s up at school. As has become traditional, Ann made Abby her choice of dinner for her birthday. This year she chose a steak dinner on the grill. We enjoyed a very nice meal of filet mignon, baked potatoes and cheesy broccoli. Everyone saved room for Ann’s homemade apple pie and some sort of sugar cookie in a pan stuff with melted chocolate chips on top that was amazing. Kirk joined us for dinner. We sang the birthday song to her and she blew out an old duck candle from years ago. She opened one present – she was thrilled to get the new iPhone 7…well sort of…she got a receipt for a pre-order. When it comes in, we will go to the Verizon store and pick out accessories for it. We sat around the big screen, watching a few movies until late.

It was still raining on Saturday morning when we got up to do our PM on the vehicles. Ann & I headed over to the Pirate Pitch for Abby’s third soccer game of the week. This time, the girls squared off with Rushville. Matt & Luke joined us a little later. It rained most of the game. Matt stayed for all of regulation then had to head to work. The girls played their hearts out, going two extra periods and were still tied 3-3. That meant that after playing two hours of soccer, it would all come down to penalty kicks. It was really tense, but the Pirates won on PKs, 3-1! Abby’s good buddy (Phyllis & Dick’s granddaughter) Emma hit a key goal and the backup goal keeper, Emily made a key stop. Our main keeper (and one of Abby’s very good friends – Keirsten) was injured earlier when she was run into but no penalty was called. In fact, there were many issues with the officiating again today. Boy, the parents really let them have it too. At one point, the side judge on our side shouted, “Shut up!??? to one of the parents during one exchange. It was very frustrating to see calls of this sort at a home game – you might expect them at Rushville, but not at home. We took Bu to ElRep for a celebratory lunch. There were many of friends there, also eating. I mentioned to our waiter that we were celebrating Abby’s birthday and the next thing I know, the wait staff sang Happy Bday to her while she wore the black sombrero and ate their delicious fried ice cream. We came home afterwards to mow but it was still raining so we helped Ann clean up the old abode before Mom & Gigi and Phyllis & Dick joined us for cake & ice cream for Bu’s formal birthday party. Mary really outdid herself this year with Abby’s Harry Potter cake. Wait till you see it! That lucky girl had “Happy Birthday??? sung to her for the 3rd time this weekend. :0) After opening presents, everyone left and it was naptime while we watched college football. Later, Bu baby-sat at Bryan & Angie’s house for Bryan’s cousin, who had twin toddlers. We were saddened to hear that my childhood idol “Cowboy Bob??? Glaze died of an apparent heat attack yesterday. There was a full moon out that night- apparently it is the last harvest moon eclipse for several years.

Man, Sunday was just a shit day. It did not turn out at all the way I had envisioned it. Matt & Bu went in to work that morning and were gone all day. While impatiently trying to hurry and de-wrinkle a shirt in the dryer, Abby pushed the touch screen a little too hard and shattered it. The screen is now unusable, but at least I was able to find a workaround that does about 90% of what we need, so it will suffice for a little while until Ann finds us a new washer/dryer set at Lowes. We noticed that the dishwasher was leaving debris on the dishes after a washing cycle, so I did some maintenance to it to get it working correctly (we had it do this previously – caused by the drain hose not being properly elevated). Someone had gotten under the counter and gotten something out of the back of the cabinet and moved the hose. When I started pulling stuff out, I noticed a small puddle and as I continued pulling out stuff, I inadvertently hit the leaking crack in the pipe and shattered a huge hole in it, causing nasty water to gush everywhere. So I got that all cleaned up and ran to the hardware store (took three trips!!) to get replacement plumbing and get it back working properly. I got the cabinet all dried out and finished fixing the dish washer (it works great now, thanks for asking) and did some laundry. Luke mowed the yard for me and we made some kind of go-pro thing that he saw on You-Tube. By the time I finally got to sit down and write this week’s blog entry, it was mid-afternoon…and wouldn’t you know it – there was some kind of stinkin’ Windows 10 upgrade that it installed that took for-ev-er…I mean it took over two hours! Ann woke up from her nap and ran Luke to basketball practice so I could catch my breath from today’s events. By the time my laptop finally started, it was time to go pick up Luke. I missed most of Cowboys win over their rival Redskins. I did manage to watch a majority of the Colts game, but they lost to the Broncos. Abby came home for a few minutes then went out to dinner with her friends in Columbus to try sushi at a Japanese restaurant. She got home after dark, as did Matt. Matt’s surgically-repaired knee is really giving him trouble. He has tried rehabbing it with stretches, etc but it is not helping. Ann has encouraged him to seek treatment and get it repaired this year. Ann made jambalaya for lunch before Matthew went to work and then made bacon cheeseburgers & tater tots for dinner after he got off. Matt stuck around to watch the late football game with me as we finally got to relax after both of us had a long, long day… He ended up staying the night and will drive up to school in the morning. We have lots of new social media pictures to share this week: Bu & friends; Lola; Gma & friends; Phyllis & Dick celebrated their 62nd wedding anniversary; lots of cousins; my alma maters; a cool new HW car; Dak had a good week; Kyla got to cheer at her first Colts home game; Zeke scored his first Cowboys TD; Cowboy Bob died (he road in my truck years ago!!); go LP!; I picked up the new Beatles & Led Zeppelin releases (live shows) this week; and the Pirate Pitch came alive this weekend!
