When The Days get Shorter and The Nights get Long

We’ve had an interesting week since we last touched base. The weather turned bitterly cold and we got our first significant snowfall and had to deal with all the stuff that comes with that white stuff. Matt had a decent week at work, teaching special ed and coaching wrestling at Zionsville West. We had fun seeing him and Taylor for a couple days this week. Abby continues to do well at her college studies, splitting time between classes, her Pi Beta Phi sorority and being the Chapter Sweetheart with the Lambda Chi boys. We enjoyed spending time with Abby & Garrett a couple days this week also. Luke ended his football season and immediately began his next sport…except it wasn’t basketball this year. We enjoyed seeing more of him this week. He did great driving on his first icy/snowy roads in a rear-wheel vehicle. We practiced last year in the van, but this was different…and he did well in his first test. Ann continues doing great with her knees – to the point where you can see her getting stronger each week. She enjoyed spending time with family and friends this week and did more cooking this week than she has the previous month, I think! I did better overall with my keto diet, but still had a couple cheat meals this week. I lost five pounds through the start of the week, but gained it all back and then some over the final four days. I only managed about ten miles of walking this week, but I enjoyed spending a lot of time with friends this week which is always good for the soul. Plus, any week you get to see all your kids, you know it’s a good one. I’ve said it before but I’ll say it again – this time change was just what my body rhythm needed. It’s nice having the sunup so early but by the time we get home, it’s already dark. We’ve joked about leaving the pole light on for ourselves when we leave in the morning so that we can see to get in the door at night. We’re excited to see Luke in a new sport – especially since he has a chance to letter! Hello again and welcome to the latest installment of the Scheu Family Blog.

We enjoyed a nice start to the week with temps in the 50s that morning. But then it began raining and got colder and colder as the day progressed. Ann & I had long days at work – it was our typical Monday! I walked three miles at the mall that afternoon because it was 30° and snowing when I got out of work. It continued snowing all the way home and right on through the night, in fact. Meanwhile, Luke had a long day of school then cleaned-out his football locker. I always hated cleaning out my locker at the end of a season, so I know how awful his afternoon was. But then an amazing thing happened…Luke went across the street to the Fieldhouse and attended wresting practice! He said it “sucked??? because he ran so much…but I think he loved it at the same time because it challenged him – something he hasn’t had in a few years. I really think this can be good for our young man and maybe recharge his batteries. He came home and was sore and tired – it was awesome! Because of the poor conditions outside, we asked him not to drive out to Oak’s or Cam’s house and so he agreed to just shower and stay in. He wasn’t sure what he could eat because he wants to get down to a lower weight class. He found a healthy dinner and played on his PS4, keeping warm inside and hoping for a 2-hour delay in the morning! Here are pictures from Luke’s final football game of his sophomore season – the Sectional championship game vs. Lawrenceburg last week.

Luke was happy on Tuesday morning as he woke up to a two-hour delay for school. Meanwhile, Ann & I headed off to work through the ice and snow. It was a cold start that morning – 10 degrees. Yikes! We had to brush snow and scrape ice off the cars for first time. I’d say we got roughly two inches of the white stuff. The neighborhood and Park Rd were treacherous but thankfully 46 was clear. But, like a dumbass, I turned off in Hartsville and wound up behind traffic, going 30/35 MPH on the backroads through the country. It was another long day at work for Ann & I. I was very busy and ended up getting out of work later than I planned, limiting me to only a mile and a half of walking in the mall. It was still literally freezing outdoors as well. Luke enjoyed a fast day at school then went to wrestling practice that kicked his butt again. He said he might have a shot at varsity since no one else is in his weight class! How cool would that be?? We took it easy that evening, watching several DVR’d shows on the big screen and kept warm with the dogs. Poor Molly was having trouble with her ear again that night so we had to give a couple different meds for it that seemed to help a little. It was a cold night, so I turned on my bed warmer for the first time this season…

We endured a frigid start on Wednesday in the single digits! Ann & I both had good, productive days. Vic took Justin & I out for lunch at China Buffet, which always makes the day go better. ???? I walked three miles at the mall after work then Ann I ran errands for a few hours – returning her heated gloves at the UPS store then driving to Mom & Sandy’s house where we met up with them and Dee & Grace. Ann dropped off some vitamin samples for Gracie, as she is now pregnant and engaged! We visited for a quite a while then ran to CVS before coming home to relax. Ann made popcorn for dinner and we watched more DVR’d shows. Luke had a good day at school and another grueling wrestling practice. He ran around with friends afterward then went to Brayden’s for a while before coming home. He complained of cramping so we gave him a Powerade and had him go lay down. Here are pictures from Matt & I’s trip to Mackey Arena to watch the Boilermakers basketball game last weekend.

Thursday was another cold day. There was still a lot of snow, but the ice began melting. Ann & I had good days at work. I got a new c-pap that day that I was excited about – yes, this has become my life… It’s been five years since I began using this device and they’ve changed a little in that time. It’ll take me a little while to adjust to it, I think. After work, I walked only about a mile and a half outdoors due to nature calling (loudly) midway through my workout and I had to head back to work. Although it was chilly, I was warming up and making good time. Luke had a fast day at school then went to wrestling practice. He came home sore and whiny again that evening – LOL. Ann & I went to the store to get food for the night. She was amazing in the kitchen as she simultaneously made tacos for dinner and her scrumptious spicy sausage dip for me to take later, for card night. Luke helped her for a little bit when he got home and the three of us sat down for a nice meal for the first time in a while. Afterward, I headed over to the Bewley B & B Bar where I met up with Rick (who made spicy mushrooms), Bryan (who made something that he called garbage eggs & a side of hot sauce so spicy it hurt), Shawn, Pat (yes, Pat!) and eventually Alan as well. Only Bob was missing that evening. We enjoyed some great food as always, a few cocktails and a good football game. That football game had a crazy finish with a fight, the Steelers backup QB getting bonked on the bean with his own helmet and of course, ejections & penalties. We joked that it will be the only thing everyone on TV and the internet will be talking about…and it sure did as it was all over that night and the following day! Here are pictures of some of the recent additions to my Hot Wheels collection.

Friday saw yet another cold start with frost on our windshields. Luke got up early and went out to breakfast with buddies before school. He went to wrestling practice after a fast day of classes. He came home for a bit before going out for the night with his buddies, eventually ending up out at Oak’s where he spent the night. Ann & I had fast days then I went to her office to pick her up and get my t-dap vaccination around noon when her office closed. We drove up to Franklin to see Abby who needed some Mom & Dad love. We had a nice visit. We picked her up at campus and took her downtown for a quick lunch at the Willard. We laughed as we got caught up on recent happenings but she had a class so we cut it short and took her back to FC and came back to town. We went to Walmart and did the order online / don’t leave your car pick-up thing again before coming home. We finally cleaned-out the car from last week’s football game, bringing in all our coats, hats and blankets and throwing them all in the washer to get them ready for the next time! Ann didn’t even have time for a good nap before she got ready and went out with Amy to Batesville to do some shopping that evening. Meanwhile, I did a few loads of laundry, another load of dishes, got Matt & Taylor all set up with the air mattress and paid bills for a couple hours. I had time to sit down and nod off a couple times before Ann got home her Holiday Shopping Event. She said she was a little disappointed with it, but they did find some good food and a new pair of matching shirts for Black Friday shopping! Matt & Taylor came down that evening to go out on the town with Joel, who was home visiting from San Diego. They met at ElRep before going downtown to do some bar hopping until late. I ended up picking them up at the Taap and they pretty much went on to bed. Joel stayed up and talked with Ann & I for about an hour before calling a night in the wee hours of the morning. Here are random pictures from our recent adventures.

Ann was up early with the dogs, allowing me to sleep in on Saturday morning. I got up and checked fluids in the cars then ran Matt & Joel uptown to get their vehicles. I went into the quilt store and picked up a gift certificate for Mom O then ran to Walmart. Meanwhile Ann started cooking for Mom’s birthday party. She made spaghetti along with a huge vat of chili! Luke came home from spending the night at Oakley’s house last night, followed by Abby & Garrett who came in from Franklin. Next, Dee, Jamie & Grace joined us followed shortly by Gma & Gigi about noon. We watched some college football on the big screen and passed Rosie around on the telephone before it was time to eat! We ate like kings – there wasn’t much left afterward. Afterward, we had cake and Mom opened presents on the 60th anniversary celebration of her 21st birthday (since she stopped having birthdays last year). We enjoyed singing a rousing version of the birthday song in Death March style that was particularly painful. ???? We had two cakes – one chocolate and one cheesecake – that were both delicious! One by one, everyone left except Abby & Garrett. We put on the new Disney + and napped for a while before the kids had to head back to campus as well. Ann didn’t feel like going out that evening, so Luke drove he & I to Mom & Sandy’s house to hang their stocking rod before heading out into the boondocks to Enochsburg where we met the Drakes at the Fireside Inn for a late dinner. We split four whole fried chickens and a few cold brews while laughing and catching up. The chicken was some of the best I’ve ever had – it reminded me of Grandmaw Brown’s skillet chicken. We ended up going back to the Paul & Dayla’s house afterwards to continue catching up, play some pool and enjoy some good bourbon. Time absolutely flew past us and before we knew it, we had to take off as my designated driver only had one stipulation – that we had to leave early enough to go through Taco Bell drive thru on the way home. Luke did a great job of night driving and got us some 4th meal and on home safely in the Hot Rod Lincoln before the sunrise.

The dogs had Ann up early again on Sunday morning, allowing me to sleep in again (thx babe!). I slowly got up and got around to our weekly household chores. It was a beautiful, sunny morning. The dogs ended up spending several hours outdoors. Luke got up and over to friend’s house before noon. Ann & I enjoyed the lazy day, snuggled up under our blankets with the dogs and taking naps while watching some DVR’d shows on the big screen until RedZone started. The day turned blah and overcast…but that was perfect for napping during football that afternoon. Later, Luke came home and we headed out to the high school for the fall sports banquet. The name is a little misleading since there was no food served this year for whatever reason. They kept it short and sweet – we were in and out in less than an hour…a new record! We were disappointed that Luke didn’t win the defensive MVP award even though he was the captain of the defense and easily led the team in tackles. He also wasn’t called up on stage when the rest of the varsity was recognized, so we’re still not even sure if he lettered or not yet. We came home and grabbed leftovers for dinner and resumed our positions in the living room. Luke took some of his teammates home before coming back to the house. He, too, was disappointed but it will make him work that much harder in the off-season. Like a true captain, he praised the boy that did win the award and said he deserved it as much as he did – what a guy! I started working on Luke’s 2019 season football stats and realized I had never tallied his baseball stats this year…and then I looked further and saw that I hadn’t done his basketball stats either. Unfortuantely, I fell asleep compiling everything, so I should have all three of those year-end stats next week. I was nodding off while writing the blog, so I wrapped it up and headed on to bed, calling it a week a little earlier than normal…

Next up is our Waybac segment which continues to feature our wedding, reception and honeymoon photo albums as well as one from Ann’s childhood. We lead off in circa 1986 with Ann & her Uncle John on her front porch on Main St; then we move on to March 1987 where we see Annie with her Jez; then some random picture of Amy – probably at Ann’s house and then a nice picture of their trip to the Smokies – both circa ’87; then we see a few photos from our wedding, including a good one of Granny Scheu, more fun pix from our reception afterward and then a handful of scenes from our honeymoon along the eastern seaboard – all in September 1995.

And that does it for this week’s episode of the Scheu Family Blog. Thanks for keeping up with us this time out and we’ll catch up with you again next time. Until then, have a good one. We miss ya, Mom.
Later, Scheu
