I can’t Stop Thinking Big…I can’t Stop Thinking Big…

It was much, much colder this week, reminding us once again that February really is supposed to be the coldest month of the year here in south-central Indiana. Matt received accolades all week at school and around town, as everyone was very excited for him and the other two boys headed to the semi-state wrestling tourney in New Castle this weekend. Even bigger news this week came out about midweek when Greensburg’s boys’ basketball team earned the AP #1 ranking in the state for 3A schools!! This wonderful achievement is even more special when you consider the starting 5 only has 1 senior with 3 sophomores and a freshman. There are a lot of good boys on that team and we wish them well in the state tourney coming up soon.
We had a chilly start to the week, waking up Monday with freezing fog. I had never heard of freezing fog until today. Of all times, the heater fan went out on the Pacifica and Ann froze the whole way in to work. Matt and the other two triumphantly returned to school and practice after punching their ticket for the semi-state tourney this coming weekend in New Castle. Matt said only six kids are even coming to practice now. Abby’s tap class was cancelled due to her instructor being sick. We’ve all been battling some form of bug or another this week it seems. She did have a basketball game at the high school. They were thrilled when they found out they’d be on the varsity court that evening. Bu worked hard in practice this past week and earned a starting nod for this game at forward. It was a much closer game that went back and forth until the last few seconds but they still lost 27-28. Abby went 0-3 from the field with no points scored. She had 2 good fouls that saved easy baskets on fast breaks, had a steal and a rebound but mostly just played good hustle defense. I don’t know if her girl even scored during this game. Her defense was stifling. She did knock heads with her friend Gracie while defending her and now has a small goose egg over her left eye (and was pretty whiney about it!).

Tuesday was a long one for little Bu again as she started off before school at academic team practice and ended with a travel team basketball game in Batesville. Thankfully, her jazz class was cancelled (again, due to a sick instructor). It was just as well, since we got back so late that night, we’d have never made it in time for dance. Luke had his first wrestling practice at the junior high that night – which he loves. Matt is also coaching one of the 8 or so teams (other members of the varsity team are coaching other teams as well), but it is not the one Luke is on. Matt went to the junior high wrestling meet, where he again helped “coach” the younger Pirates. Luke came with us on to Batesville where Abby’s team had a revenge match against the St. Louis Catholic school. Last year, the girls were demolished by a superior team that absolutely squashed the young Pirate-ettes like 42 – 0 or something equally horrifying. This time it was a much different scene. Abby saw a good chunk of playing time but looked scared when handling the ball. Abby got 1 rebound and did not attempt any shots this game. She looks very unconfident with her shot right now. She is still compensating by shooting left-handed (even though she is a righty). She has had pain in her right wrist since her ATV accident last fall and hasn’t shot the same since. We keep encouraging her to work through the discomfort, but she won’t listen… Again, Bu impressed with her hustling defense, again shutting her opponent down. I don’t think her opponents even touched the ball while she was guarding them. The Pirates were in control of the Cardinals the entire night, capturing the first basket and never relinquishing the lead, winning by 5 points. I have to give the coach credit – he did a great job of getting all the girls adequate playing time while still making ensuring a win for Greensburg. We got home in time to see Purdue lose to #3 Ohio St by 3 points.

We were supposed to have a night off on Wednesday – time for me to get some more of the scanning project done. However, I ended up staying at work until after 10 pm, working on fire panel issues…fun! Ann went out with her good friend Shawna for an after prom “meeting” at El Reparo while Matt watched his siblings. Bu was back at academic team practice on Thursday morning. Matt had wrestling practice at the high school before coaching again at the junior high where Luke also had wrestling practice. Ann worked the booster club booth at the boy’s basketball game. The game featured the top-ranked Pirates in action in front of another big crowd. The Pacifica was in the shop to get the blower motor replaced as well as an overdue tune-up. I got to get the truck up and running for the first time in months to get the boys picked up after practice.

On Friday, Ann and I came home early as Abby got all gussied up for her first junior high formal dance that evening. Actually, parents were a little upset that the dance was so early (5 pm) when most parents are either still working or just getting off. She looked absolutely beautiful and graciously posed for our photo shoot like she was on the red carpet! LOL! Seriously though, we got several really good pictures of Abby and even Mom & Gigi came over for the big event! Matt and Luke had wrestling again (it will be four nights a week!). Ann went scrapbooking at Mrs. B’s with Shawna and friends – which is just across the street from Acra’s. They did a good job on the car, except that the battery was completely dead. It only had 8 volts. Thankfully, I had my nice jumper and got it stated immediately. I ran some errands in it for about a half hour and dropped it off at Mrs. B’s. When Ann left several hours later, in the dead of the cold night, it luckily started right away on the first try. In fact, we didn’t have any issues the rest of the weekend. Ann made her displeasure very clear with the service tech and shortly thereafter, she received a call from the service manager who said he would replace the battery if she continued to have issues, which was pretty cool. I had gone up to Lafayette during the day to pick up our minivan from Bob Rohrman after it was wrecked last month. We were planning to stop by the Parkside Deli for lunch, but the weather turned ugly and we wanted to get south as quickly as possible. In fact, it snowed on and off all day on Friday.

…and then there were three… We woke up on Saturday to an inch or so of snow with lots of ice. Matt was afraid the semi-state tourney would be cancelled, but no such call every came and we were up early that morning to travel north to New Castle. It was by far the coldest day so far of the year – heck of this whole winter! The ice and snow made driving a little difficult, but nothing too bad. We got up to New Castle shortly after weigh-ins. The gym where the boys wrestled was enormous and reminded me of a college or professional building – very nice. It was nice, but the prices were all escalated – what a racket! We were prepared though, thankfully. Three boys were supposed to be participating from Greensburg, plus one from neighboring Oldenburg Academy where an ex-teammate now played. Colton, the other Pirate sophomore broke his hand at practice this week and did not participate in the tourney. Dillen broke a rib during practice this week but gave it a go anyhow. As it turned out, he would re-injure it badly during his opening match and got pinned. He went to the hospital directly after his match (and a shower!). Matthew was one of only two sophomores in his weight class to make it to this tourney. What a thrill! It was a different atmosphere in that hulking building. It was evident we had made the big time here today. Matthew was paired with a senior that was seeded 1st in the tourney and 20th in the state. He was very big, very fast and very, very strong. Matt wrestled his butt off but the older man was just too much for him this day. Matt’s attempts to work his moves were unsuccessful and the kid from Pike had his way during this match. He could not pin Matt and this we all took pride in – Matt refused to go out like that. He made us all very proud and although he was upset afterwards, I encouraged him by letting him know that he had represented himself, his family, his teammates and his school very well. We received several compliments again from those around us, most stating how good it was that he had made it this far. We had a couple folks come just to watch him and in fact we will have a couple of alternate videos at some point to share on here. After all four of the kids lost in the first round, we left before they started the second round. Matt and his team left before the third round started. Ann & I took the kids to Pizza Hut before we left town in New Castle before coming home and everyone taking naps. We watched the brackets that night as there is a unique spot that Matt is in here. Since he lost to the #1 seed, if that boy wins the tourney and then somehow one of the boys at the next level cannot participate (injury, doesn’t make weight, some other disqualification, etc), then Matt would be an alternate for the state tourney and would be eligible to wrestle! …sure enough, the boy from Pike that beat Matt ended up winning the tourney! So, we will play it by ear this next week as there is an outside shot that Matt will make the trip to Indy next weekend!!! Matt’s shoulder is still very sore, especially after matches of course. Unfortunately, this means that Matt should not try out for baseball this spring – but rather needs to focus on resting and rehabbing it – once his wrestling season eventually ends that is! 😉 To celebrate the Hammer’s season, Ann planned to cook-out steaks for dinner. However, with the cold, strong wind blowing – we couldn’t get the darned thing lit! That didn’t dampen our spirits though and Ann cooked filets and potato wedge fry thingies that were delicious…and the cookies ‘ n’ cream pie was the bomb! We slept in on Sunday morning and took naps on and off as we lounged on the couches. Abby ended up going to the movies with Megan to see ‘The Woman in Black’ which is a horror flick. Meanwhile, Ann ran out to the high school to meet up with Shawna again to work on after prom stuff. Ann made one of our favorite dinners – breakfast!! Afterwards Purdue finally won another Big Ten game and we watched the 499th episode of the Simpsons & Family Guy and wished for either football to be back on or NASCAR to start up sooner. We were saddened to hear that Whitney Houston was found dead in her hotel room and they were calling for more snow to start off the coming week…

Next up, we have our video section, including four new family videos and several others from around the internet this week…

Next up, we have a quick Waybac section. Leading off we have several crops of a couple more pictures from Mom & Dad Scheu’s wedding in ’68 followed by more photos from Mom & Dad B’s honeymoon in ’78:

Then we have a bunch from ’79 including a pair from Rob’s first Thanksgiving, taken in November in our living room in Temple City; followed by a bunch from December – the hospital in L.A. where Rob was born, Rob getting a bath in the sink with Mom in Cali, Rob’s baptism, me posing with Mom’s “weed” in the back yard, Rob in his baptism outfit (he looks like a baby in a dress!), and a few of Dad w/ Rob in the living room in Temple City at Christmastime; Then we have Rob one year later – in October of 1980 at our Kenwood home in LaPorte and then in a pro picture a day or so later.

Later, Scheu

First off…Abby looked good on defense but very hesitant on offense. Practice, practice, practice and it will come. The team as a whole did look pretty good. Wow, that guy is great that Matt wrestled and he has absolutely nothing to feel bad about as he gave it his all!! This is a mark in time that he will always remember and I am sure look back on with pride! The oldie pics were funny too. Good ones of you and Rob at a young age…those were the days!! Time goes sooo very fast and as you get older, you realize just how fast these days go. Love you all and take care of yourselves. We have had some cold weather down here…I know you don’t want to hear me whine!!
