But February made me Shiver…

Boy did it cool down quickly around here! After enjoying a relatively mild winter so far this year, it was down right cold this week. Temps dropped down in to the single digits a couple days and we even had a little snow and ice. …Too bad it wasn’t enough to go sledding though…something we still haven’t done this year. Abby continued to struggle with her foot; in fact it got worse as the week progressed. Despite all of that, she continued to perform routines but sat out her practices. We visited Matt in Indy – only with a twist. And Luke did a great job on his Science Fair project.
On Monday morning, Ann took Abby to see the doctor for her foot. Unfortunately we’re still not sure of the issue but Dr. Fangman wants her to stay off it except for her dance competition. She is refusing to use the crutches I got for her. That night, Luke had Family Fun Night for an Open House to show off all the Science Fair projects. Luke got 1st place…and he did it all himself at school! We are so proud of him. Abby & Kama were there to help, representing the high school Student Council. However, the administration changed their plans at the last minute and we were free to all go home after 3 minutes! Yay! I had fun razzing Abby that she must’ve driven them to the school because the Pacifica was so poorly parked in the lot, but it was Ann! :0) I was able to fix the treadmill that night and it was a much better workout. Abby went to jazz class but she didn’t dance because of her foot.

Bu was in to school early for Student Council on Tuesday morning. Luke missed the final basketball practice to attend the first wrestling practice of the year. He weighed in at 98 lbs, fully clothed. He has lost a bunch of weight this year while still growing. He also missed baseball practice for pitchers that night due to wrestling but we’ll start going next week when he has 4 wrestling practices per week. Ann & I took Luke out to the girls’ varsity basketball game in order watch Abby & the Pirateers perform at halftime on Senior Night. She limped around but did the best she could with her foot such a mess.

What sprang from a bet against the Boilers earlier in the week became reality as Abby & Britney joined ping pong club after school on Wednesday. Homework Club on Soup Night was cancelled due to a phone call Ann received during work – it was Matt and he asked if she was sitting down (never a good way to start a conversation with a parent!). He went on to explain that Colten was taking him to the hospital because he had accidentally gone through a window in his dorm room at school. Ann immediately jumped in the car and called me. We dropped everything and headed up to Indy to St. Francis and met Matt & Colten in the ER. It turns out he had just returned from class and was going to open the window when he suddenly found himself falling forward and when he went to catch himself, he put his hand right through a large window. He got lucky that his injuries weren’t any worse than what they are. He ended up with three stitches in one cut and one wound that was left open because of a small piece of glass still embedded in it. The ER doc tried to dig it out but was unsuccessful. He got patched up and we were released a few hours later. We took the boys out for dinner afterwards to Five Guys Burgers & Fries and then said our good-byes. By that time it was dark and the weather had really turned. It was cold, the roads were frozen and the snow was really coming down so the roads were super slick. The boys made it home safely but we saw numerous slide-offs and it took forever to get home. The conditions were some of the worst we had driven in for years – between the roads, the dark and the near-white-out from blowing snow – it was extremely nerve-racking! Bu & Brit were home with Luke (thanks to Memaw for feeding our babies). The chicken alfredo that was on the menu will have to wait until a later date… and the Boilers knocked off another top 20 team that night with a big win over Ohio St!

Ann met up with Matt on Thursday as they saw Dr. Guse again (he has made several repairs to Matt’s body through the years). This appointment was for his other shoulder this time and it really needs help. We all know he probably needs surgery but Doc wants him to try PT for 30 days then decide on surgery if it’s still no better. Meanwhile Luke had wrestling practice again and really enjoyed himself. Abby helped facilitate the Pirateers clinic then headed off to tap class – afterwards her foot was purple, tingling and swollen…she could barely walk…and yet she still refused to use crutches. We are just icing and heating it every twenty minutes but something is obviously wrong.
Ann took Bu back to the doctor on Friday morning. From there, they were sent to get an X-ray. It was negative for a break but no closer to an explanation. Next they were sent to the orthopedist (Guse’s office again) but they weren’t sure either so they want us to wait yet another week. Meanwhile she needs to stay off it and ice/heat it still. Luke and I went to the optometrist and both got good check-ups from Tom. Matt came home from school and took Luke to wrestling practice. Luke said it was awesome to have his brother back and it showed – you should’ve seen him watching out the window and how excited he was Matt pulled in the drive. Afterwards the boys joined Ann, Maryann, Sandy & I at the boys’ basketball game to watch Abby, her teammates and over 100 little ones for the Pirateers Clinic performance at halftime of the Rushville game. She sat out the opening number (their pom-pom competition routine) due to her booted foot that she needs to stay off of but did dress-out and looked great. She did participate in the halftime but admittedly her part had little movement with the little ones… Megan joined us for the game and she & Abby stayed to watch the 2nd half of the game and caught a ride back to our house with Grandma Maggie. Meanwhile the boys came home to shower and Ann & I ran got take out from Pizza Hut. Megan stayed the night and the gals fell asleep on the recliners in the family room watching movies and eating pizza.

Everybody got to sleep in on Saturday morning. It was nice – except we forgot to tell the dogs who were up at the butt-crack of dawn. Luke skipped the basketball tournament this weekend since he missed practices. I’m sure they’ll do fine without him. Luke & I did a few things around the house and fixed the fan motor in the bathroom finally. As thanks, we did some Hot Wheel hunting afterwards and later met up with Matt, Bu & Megan at El Chile Poblano for a super-sized margarita and a huge lunch. Matt & I watched Purdue narrowly lose at Minnesota and took naps. Luke enjoyed the lovely, 50-degree day that melted all the remaining snow, by playing outside for hours while Ann went scrapbooking. Matt had his buddies over to play Wii in the family room and Megan went home…but not before she dropped her iPhone on our driveway… Matt came to her rescue and let her have his GS3 that he was going to sell back to Verizon – he’s such a good boy… When Ann came home later, she made popcorn for everyone while we watched a couple movies and got caught up on our DVR’ed shows.
We again got to sleep in on Sunday morning – I can’t remember the last time we got to sleep in both days! We did our weekly household chores and enjoyed having the whole family at home for a lazy weekend. It was nice early in the day and Luke went out and shot bb guns, his air soft gun and the bow in the back yard. Luke had baseball practice late in the afternoon. Ann made the chicken alfredo from Soup Night and Matt headed back to school as soon as the girls got back home. It clouded up in the afternoon and was just kind of blah – a good day for a nap. Before we knew it the weekend had come to an end…and with it, another week was in the bag. We have lots of social media pictures to share with you this week: Abby and the Pirateers; Abby throwbacks; twitter war pix from our kiddos; Abby with the mangy mutts; Barney & Chris at a golf outing; Kimmy & friend; Cathy & Tom; Nathan; Mongoose Hot Wheels; Zeppelin getting ready to release a book about their successful Earl’s Court run in ’75; Neil Peart was on the radio; a note from Luke; Rob’s breakfast after the Super Bowl; Jeff gearing up for his Drive for Five (again); a rare Beatles 7???; Luke’s baseball travel team logo; Abby at the doctor and then at dance with one of her new outfits; Angie and the Lowes at a local meeting; one of the big, bright, full moons that we enjoyed all this week – it lit up our entire backyard; and another great Calvin & Hobbes panel.

Next up is our Waybac section which still features many items from the scrapbook that Mom collected for me through the years. We lead off with one of our oldest pictures, if not the oldest in our collection – if I remember Granny correctly, I think this is my Great Grandpa Charles Deerr from approx the 1890’s; then a big fast forward to Granny’s house in approximately 1973 for Christmas on Highland Ave – I love that old house – with David, Barney, me, Mom, Uncle Chuck, Cathy & Granny; Dad in our Shortridge home in about 1973; Ann in what I believe is her kindergarten picture in about ’76; a page from my Oakland Elementary yearbook in ’77; an old full-page ad of a cool movie called Star Wars in the LA Times in July ’78; Trudi & Homey’s wedding program in February ’81; more artwork from Mr. Panos in ’81; our football team at Boston Jr High in October ’82 – including an oldie of our recently deceased buddy Pritz; a Spelling Bee award of mine in March ’83; a few track awards, circa ’84; some football articles from late ’85; an All-Area certificate in ’86; a couple football articles in ’86; a yearbook page of our football team in ’86; Ann & Stacy in their freshman Tri-Delt picture from FC in September ’88; and finally my sophomore picture – also from FC – in September ’88…the shades are due to a big black eye I had recently received after a long night of upside down margaritas at the Phi Delt house! :0) I had forgotten about this picture for decades – how funny!
