My Independence seems to Vanish in the Haze

What an incredible week we enjoyed since we touched base last. There were lots of changes in the air in our ever-shrinking world – from bringing down the Confederate flag (including that brave statement by Bree Newsome in SC) to the Supreme Court upholding gay marriage to the same justices upholding the Affordable Care Act – it is a good time for humanity. We needed a little growth and healing after all the bad things that have been occurring these past several years…it actually gives me hope for us as a nation.
Monday was a long day of work for Matt, Ann & I. It was hot, humid and rainy. Luke & I pitched in the back lot. We increased his pitch count to 75 as his arm starting to get stronger. I was saddened to hear that one of the greatest rock bassists passed away – Chris Squire of the band Yes. We have some great new social media pictures to share this week: Abby in her cowboy hat; Luke & Titans at last weekend’s baseball tourney; Robby & Nathan at the Sand Pebble; Nate & family in FL; Daniel & Kels; Chris Squire’s passing; Calvin & Hobbes panels; the date of the next new Simpson’s was released; Rick competed at Pinks All Out; US Women’s Soccer Team; Jeff is bringing back an old look soon; a cool road sign; Coach Moore with Greensburg’s own MLB’er, Alex Meyer who is now pitching for the Minnesota Twins – he played this past week at Cincinnati’s Great American Ballpark(!); Abby & friends at a recent grad party; Luke got his final birthday present in the mail – the Children’s Museum Hot Wheel car; the rebel flag comes down in SC; demonstrators took to the streets in DC; a patriotic Vette; more Abby & the Pirateers – this time at the parade this weekend; and our girl looking all festive on the 4th.

It stormed on and off all day and night on Tuesday. Abby had Pirateers practice that evening. Luke & I mowed the front yard. Ann & Bu went shopping. Later, Abby & I watched the women’s national soccer team play the #1-ranked German team in the World Cup semi-finals and were thrilled to see them win, 2-0! Afterwards we watched one of Ab’s faves – Rizzoli & Isles – while Ann snored. :0)
Wednesday was another long day at work for us. That evening Luke had baseball practice. Abby drove us to pick him up and then on to the store. She has really been driving a lot this summer. She’s becoming quite a good little driver. Ann cooked one of our favorites for dinner – garlic chicken…yum!
We made the paper on Thursday. Well work did anyhow – upper half of the front page. A woman opened a lawsuit that is a complete farce. I can’t wait until the truth comes out. But I’m sure that won’t make the upper half of the front page when it happens. I couldn’t believe the lies that were told to the paper. And now as I write this, it has apparently made the local CBS news. Abby again had Pirateers practice. Luke & I mowed the back yard and then he pitched about 80 balls to me in the back lot. He worked on his newest pitches – the curveball & screwball – that Coach Messer taught him last night. Matt hung out at home after work while Abby went out on a date with Noah. And Ann went out on a date with Amy to the movies. We also have more pictures from Bu and the Pirateers at their performance last week.

Ann & I took the day off on Friday. It was the first time in over a decade that I didn’t work security at work during the fireworks display in Columbus. Instead, I stayed home and we had a few friends and family over for dinner, drinks and a show – we watched the Greensburg city fireworks all from our backyard. We hadn’t done that since the kids were little and we had a pool… Ann hadn’t planned to cook dinner, just a few snacks but it somehow kept growing and eventually she had quite the spread: burgers, dogs, pasta salad, olive dip, corn dip, cheesy potatoes, corn on the cob, desserts – amazing! Matt had Devin over; Abby had Noah over, Luke had Drew over, Ann had Amy over so it was nice that everyone had somebody to run around with that night. Paul felt ill and Bryan had a gig in Indy so neither of them could make it unfortunately. Still, we had a great time. Mom & Sandy bailed early and missed the city display altogether. The kids let off a bunch of fireworks and the neighborhood was alive for the first time in a very long time. There were people out everywhere and several families had their own displays. Drew ended up staying the night after everyone else went home.

We were up fairly early on Saturday. The kids got prepared for their part in the 4th of July parade downtown. Abby marched with her Pirateers and the band. Luke & Drew decorated and rode their bikes. We sat up on the corner where we have sat the past two decades. It was a short parade this year, only lasting about 10 minutes. There were a lot fewer floats. Afterwards we had a big lunch at Mom & Sandy’s house. She had burgers, dogs, a big bowl of ham & beans; homemade mac & cheese; lots of dips and chips and desserts…mmmm. Dee & Jamie came over as well as “Grandpa??? Joe. Aunt Linda was ill so she and Uncle Dave didn’t make it this year. Apparently Grace may have been in town as well but we didn’t see her. After the huge meal it was nap time. Matt didn’t even make it out of Memaw’s house before he was sawing logs. The rest of us came home and nodded off…except the boys who got more fireworks and enjoyed blowing shit up in the backyard all afternoon…that is until Ann woke up and made them stop. She is the No Fun Police. I took the boys and Abby to get ice cream at Dairy Point. After we all got cleaned up, we went over to Bryan & Angie’s house for dinner and watched the Millridge fireworks, which they allowed to be shot off from their dam. We had burgers & dogs, different dips and salads, desserts – you name it. It was an awesome end to a perfect day!
Sunday was a lazy day. Everyone slept in. We watched TV and lounged in the A/C on the couches. Matt spent the day running around with his buddies. Luke played on the Wii and Xbox. Later Bu & I watched the women’s soccer team win the World Cup championship!! Way to go, ladies! It was the perfect way to put a cap on the week…

And our final segment is our videos which has two new family movies and several from around the internet this week.

That does it for this week’s entry into the Scheu Family Blog. We’d like to thank you for keeping up with us this time out and we’ll catch up with you again next time. Until then, have a good one. We miss ya, Mom.
Later, Scheu
