In typical fashion, we could barely keep up with it all. Ann and I are really feeling the aftermath of all the work we did over the holiday weekend ? we?ve both been sore and tired all week ? thank goodness for Advil! It was another scorcher this week (man, we miss the pool). On Monday it got up in to the lower 90?s with loads of humidity to spare. Matt presented with fluid on his left knee. He had an issue a couple years ago and with him being in the off-season for his sports, Ann made an appointment with a specialist to jump on it early. I ran Matt in to football and wrestling practices which began at 6 am and Mom O ran him back out for early evening football practice. Abby began volleyball camp and couldn?t stop talking about it later that night. Luke & Bu made their return to Brandy?s for the summer. She now lives on the other side of town, so it?s less handy for us! But it was the phone call from Mom B that dominated the day for our family. Mom called me at work that morning to say she had just called an ambulance for Dad, who was having chest and arm pains, slurred and unintelligible speech a nasty headache and being very dizzy. He was admitted to hospital and lots of tests were run. We said lots of prayers that day for him?and we hate that they are SOO far away? And finally, to complete the bummer Monday, one of all-time favorite players retired ? Shaquille O?Neil decided to hang up the high tops after 19 seasons. So, from my young adult life all but one of my favorite athletes have now retired (all about my age) ? First it was Troy Aikman in football, next was Ken Griffey Jr. in baseball, now Shaq in basketball?the only one left is Jeff Gordon in racing.

Tuesday was another scorcher, stretching up in to the mid-nineties. Matt went in early again for football & wrestling practices at the high school. He met with the trainer who thought it might be the meniscus or cartilage in that knee. We?ll find out later this week. Abby went to volleyball camp again and is thrilled that several of her friends are also in the camp. Matt is also attending the evening drill exercises and is now attending some form of leadership classes as well. Mom called with GREAT news as Dad?s MRI & CAT scan came back negative as did his hear catheter later in the afternoon!! The docs think it my just be coincidence and a combo of possibly vertigo and GERD that are causing the odd symptoms. Matt?s knee was still swollen that evening and was having some pain with it as well. Abby sweated out another game at the ball diamonds. Although the dugouts are still destroyed, the fields are in great shape. It was a sweltering armpit out there that evening. Abby played catcher but kept cool. Abby was officially 0-1 at the plate but reached base both times with a fielder?s choice and a walk. She scored 2 runs as well. She almost had a play at the plate, but the ball was late getting to her. She did fire the ball down to third afterwards, though, and held the girl at second base. The girls hit much better but still couldn?t play a lick of defense. They had a lead going in to the bottom of the last inning, but couldn?t stop the other team from coming from behind and stealing the game from them. I believe their record is 1-5. As is typical with him, we sent Luke and his friend Brendan (one of the neighbor boys) over to get the scoop on what happened at the next ball diamond over where EMS had responded and was working on a larger woman (turns out she fell off the bleachers). So we sent the boys down to investigate and let us all know what happened. Well, instead, they get down there and get distracted by the girls (their age) playing softball on that diamond. Next thing we know, we can?t get them away from that game and I had to go down and send them back. LOL! All I could say that night when we got home was God bless the man who invented air conditioning!!!

<img decoding="async" loading="lazy" conditioning? Today was the hottest day of 2011 thus far, shooting up to 98 degrees! Matt thankfully took the day off from training and promptly slept most of the day. Abby went back to volleyball camp where she injured her wrist while working on spikes. Ann & I left work early to meet with two contractors on the house ? one a general contractor to do all the repairs and a drying expert who got up in to the attic to inspect for wetness in the insulation and heating system. Both kids had pictures and games at the ball diamonds. All things considered, the ball diamonds really aren?t in that bad of shape. Abrell?s Photography were out at the ball diamonds for both Luke?s and Abby?s teams. Even though we?ve never gone in for an appointment to his studio, he knows all of our family members by first name just from all of the sports and activities that he has photographed through the years. We hated it that the kids again played simultaneously. So I took Luke again and Ann went with Abby. Luke?s team lost a heartbreaker that went down to the final at-bat but came up short when the Blue Jays got the last out on a controversial play at the plate where Luke?s friend Seth was called safe initially (which would?ve tied the score) but once the dust cleared was called out ? losing 17-16. Luke went 3-3 with 2 runs scored. He got to play second base for a couple innings. Abby?s team got squashed again, 10-1. Bu and her friend Alexis are now unofficially known as the pickle ninjas (you?ll have to ask her?). Abby went 0-1 yet again and again reached base both times with a fielder?s choice and a walk. According to Ann, it was an ?ugly game??? vs. the best team in the league. Bu played catcher and had several compliments for her work behind the plate?

<img decoding="async" loading="lazy" src="http://scheumann.us/BlogPhotos/aspa11.1.jpg" height="300" Happy Anniversary guys! Matt was back at it, attending all the wrestling / football workouts and Abby was back at volleyball camp again. We met with the adjuster that evening and settled on most everything. We still need to do some work with the pool. Although we are still awaiting our third quote to come back, we have a good idea of which one we?d like to use. The insurance company holds back a certain percentage and calls it depreciation. Once you get the work done or get a signed contract, they cut you a check for the rest of your compensation ? that way they ensure that you don?t just take the money and run?which won?t be an issue for us. It was a nice evening that was our only night to relax. Ann made a kick-ass supper of chicken beast with this great, spicy topping (what was that called again, honey?) and a bunch of sides. Afterwards, I ran Bu out to get a new batting helmet at Hibbett?s (one with a face mask and chin strap for fast-pitch softball?which reminded me more of a football helmet than a baseball helmet. While we were out, we noticed that the city finally began to work on removing the large debris pile out at the fairgrounds where all of our neighbors? trees / branches ended up ? as well as most of the city?s? Abby?s new phone came in as well. We were hoping that it would be a birthday present, but her old phone took a dump and won?t even stay running more than 30 seconds ? even when plugged in (I think there?s some sabotage involved here!). She likes her new Samsung Intensity 2, although she really wanted a touch screen phone ? but all of the ones they currently offer take a data package ? something she doesn?t need quite yet? The kids? report cards came in as well. Matt somehow pulled out all B?s & C?s but really needs to pick it up. He should be all A?s & B?s ? seriously. Luke earned all B?s with an A and Abby trumped them both with straight A?s!! Nicely done, girl?

Friday was a busy day. We started early again, getting Matt out to 6 am practice. Abby wrapped up her volleyball camp by sweeping the skill competition and earning the best overall award. She brought home a bunch of prizes. Way to go, Bu! Ann took Matt to his orthopedic appointment. He has pre-patellar bursitis. The doc would like him to start with icing it and taking ibuprofen and see where it gets him. I think I had to do the same thing for my heels when I was his age? He ended up skipping the evening practices and instead slept for several hours. Ann went to her eye doctor appointment and then took Bu to her first fast-pitch softball practice. I ran the car over to our friend JT?s house for new rotors and brakes. Man, did it make a HUGE difference ? funny how the little things can do that, huh? It rained so hard in Columbus and even on my way home. There was heavy rain and wind and several lightning strikes ? close lightning strikes that I thought for sure would cancel all the games that night. Much to my surprise, it merely sprinkled a few minutes at home. Abby got something stuck in her eye as she came to her softball game that evening and it bugged her during the entire game. Ann eventually got it out, but fears she put a small scratch on the eye in the process. It really affected her game play on diamond 3 that evening as she had trouble seeing the ball. She ended up striking out twice, walking and hitting in to a fielder?s choice, so it was 0-3 officially but reached base twice. She did slide again, which I was proud to hear about! She is the still the only player on her team that has slid in to a base. She also had a nasty headache and sinus issues, making her feel miserable. Even with all of that, she still had to play catcher. She played her old team (Eaton Day Law) from last year. It was a battle for the cellar as they only had one victory between them. We ended up beating them soundly and raised the record to 2-5 on the year. Meanwhile, on diamond 7, Luke?s team was seeking revenge against a Dodger team that bat them soundly early in the year. This time out, they were missing a few players which made it easy pickings for our kids. Luke enjoyed his best game of the year as he hit the two longest balls of the year ? way out in to the outfield. One nearly reached the right center fence! He nearly hit for the cycle ? needing only one more at-bat to have a chance at a double. He hit a long homerun (his 2nd of the year) and then an even longer triple. He was stopped at 3rd as the team had already scored 5 runs that inning. He had 6 RBI?s and scored two runs. Defensively, he made zero errors, had 2 assists from the pitcher position, caught two fly balls and even made a double play!! We were up by 15 after four innings, so we called off the dogs and moved all our outfielders to the infield and vice versa for the final two innings. Luke played left center, but saw no further action, defensively. Way to go, little buddy!! WOW! We won 21-6. Afterwards, Annie went scrapbooking with her friends at Mrs. B?s and the kids and I went out to eat at El Chile Poblano (man, that huge margarita was just what I needed to end the long week).

<img decoding="async" up several times. We did sleep in a few hours that morning, which felt pretty good. The girls ended up going scrapbooking while the boys worked out in the back yard: mowing and trimming, moving the fallen fence pieces that are killing the grass underneath, re-securing the yard with a new, metal fence to replace the plastic one that Molly keeps chewing through and getting out and finally cleaning out the shed for the first time in three years. We got rid of a bunch of stuff finally. It looks good out there, with the exception of the big trash pile in the side yard. As in past years, as I try to get rid of the old stuff the kids don?t play with and move it to a pile to pitch or sell, the kids inevitably get things out, play with them and plead for us to keep them. Such was the case this year with several items that haven?t seen the light of day in a couple years and now the kids can?t stand to part with them. Molly was overjoyed to be free to run and roam. She buzzed about the yard for hours, wearing out Lola in the process. They both collapsed that evening when we finally came in for dinner. Ann made a great dinner of spicy tilapia and rice. Luke had his first all-star baseball practice that evening. They only had 7 of the 12 kids show up for practice that night. The ones that were there did VERY well. If the others are of the same caliber, they should have a good chance of winning a few games. Their first of which will be next weekend. We are supposed to attend my works? employee day at Ceraland Park. I?m supposed to be the grill master for lunch, so we?re not sure what we?re doing yet.

Sunday was Mom B?s 62nd birthday (Happy B-day, Momma ? we love you!!). We cleaned up the house and did our weekly chores. Luke & I loved seeing Jeff Gordon absolutely DOMINATE the Pocono race, moving in to a tie for 3rd place all-time in victories with 84! ?although TNT did a sloppy job with their first race of the year ? but I love Kyle Petty? Abby went with Megan to her dad?s house for the day. Luke & I went to Dairy Point for ice cream and then we checked the oil in the vehicles. Matt & I watched as the Dallas Mavericks took care of business and beat the favored Miami Heat for the NBA title. It was great to see Brian Cardinal play a role in the victory. I didn?t realize ?The Custodian??? ? as he was lovingly referred to back in his Purdue playing days ? was still playing in the NBA?good for him. It was good to see the Reds that night on national TV ? Sunday Night Baseball. They are currently 4 games out of first place. We had burgers on the grill and the temps were amazing ? mid-seventies and zero humidity. We actually opened up the house and enjoyed a perfect end to the week?

Next up, let?s take a look at this week?s video. Thanks for keeping up with us this week. We?ll catch up with you again next time. Until then, have a good one.
Later, Scheu

Yet another busy week has sped past us already.

Did I mention how thankful I am to live in the age of air conditioning?

Thursday was Mom & Dad B?s 33rd Anniversary!! Happy Anniversary guys!

We had some pretty heavy storms overnight which kept Ann & I up several times.

It actually runs in correct chronological order ? so it flips back and forth during games since we had games that were simultaneous:

Next, let?s flip on the Waybac machine and take a look at some old photos. Leading off is one I just shared on Facebook as well ? Dawnan & I in our living room, preparing to go to the Freshman Spring Formal (I think) in ?84 and then we have a bunch of pictures from White Birch Village in Wisconsin with Mom & Dad, Rob and Marilou & Kenny in approximately 1990.

Next, we move forward to 1997 for Matt?s first outside walk in the early spring ? out in back of our Columbus townhouse; a picture of Matt and back of Mom S?s head in the townhouse at Easter in ?97; Matt?s 2nd birthday party in Greensburg, ?98.

Finally, we start at the Salt Rock Grill in FL in May of ?99 during week 19 vacation; Matt with George the next day; Abby?s first Christmas with Grandpa on Christmas morning in ?99; Mom & Dad on Aquaholic in the summer of ?99; Matt?s fourth birthday party in 2000; the White Tornado when it was still newer in 2K; Easter with Grandma B with Matt & Bu; Christmas morning on Main St; and finally Mom & Dad at Ryman Theater in Opryland in 2002.

Well that does it for this week?s edition of the Scheu Family Blog. Thanks for keeping up with us this week. We?ll catch up with you again next time. Until then, have a good one.
Later, Scheu

[1
