Welcome to another special double edition of the Scheu Family Blog. I hope this is not a trend, but rather a product of our schedule. It has been quite hectic here lately as we find ourselves in a state of flux ? moving between summer and fall. In the past two weeks, we played our last fast-pitch softball games, our last all-star baseball tourney games and went to the city pool one final time as we said good-bye to our summer break. At the same time, we started school, had plenty of parent meetings, played our first 3 football games and through it all, we battled injuries that kept us busy going to doctor appointments. Change is definitely in the air. I love this time of year ? you can tell it?s late summer \/ early fall by all the sound of all the locusts \/ cicadas, who are out in full force.
\n On last Sunday, we were up early and back over to Seymour for championship Sunday at Luke?s bball tourney called ?Summer Slam.??? To recap the tourney: Luke batted 5th all tourney & played left centerfield mostly, but did play 1st one game as well. First up was the host Seymour Owls, which we won. Luke was 3-3 with 2 singles & a double, 4 RBIs and 2 runs scored. Next up was the Ellettsville Dynamite ? a game which we lost by one point. Luke went 2-3 with a single & double, 2 RBIs, and 1 run scored while playing 1st base, where he was perfect with 2 unassisted outs (caught a pop up and fielded a ground ball) as well as making all the catches for 9 assisted putouts. He loved being back at 1st and did great! Day 2, we were the 3rd seed where we played game 3 vs. the North Vernon Heat and won by 10 run rule! Luke was 3-3 with 2 singles & a double, 4 RBIs and 1 run scored. Our 4th game was vs. the New Albany All-Stars where we came up a little short ? by 1 run and had to settle for 3rd place yet again. Luke was 1-2 with a double, RBI and a run scored. He caught one fly ball and fielded several grounders hit to him in left centerfield. After the game, we went to Tumbleweed?s where I took and passed the En Fuego burger challenge! While we were out sweating our butts off in the heat, we missed the Brickyard 400, where Jeff placed 5th! Thank God for DVRs. The Olympics? opening ceremony in London was amazing! My favorite part was Paul McCartney singing Hey Jude.<\/p>\n

On Monday, Matt had two-a-day football practices followed by driving lessons at South Decatur high school. Abby had her two final fast-pitch softball games (I guess we got gypped on this year?s season ? we still have 5 or 6 make up games yet as well as a tourney and I seriously doubt any of them will be played ? nor will we get any type of reimbursement) We looked pretty bad in the first one, losing 22-8 in the longest game of the year! Abby played 1st and batted second, going 1-2 with a single & a K, as well as 2 stolen bases & a run scored. She had 3 putouts at 1st base with no errors. We played a doubleheader and lost again in the twilight game, 8-3 vs. Lambert Abstract where she started in left centerfield but was quickly moved to 1st base in the 2nd inning. Bu was 1-2 in 3 at-bats with a single, got hit by a pitch and popped up to short where the defender made a nice play on it to get her out. She had 2 RBIs and a scored a run. Luke had his first football practice, got his gear and was very excited!<\/p>\n

Abby had physical therapy on her knee up in Indy on Tuesday and Matt had an MRI on his shoulder in Columbus. Luke had Open House at the elementary school that evening. Matt again had football two-a-days. Luke & I had baseball practice. Abby went out to dinner with Megan & Julie. We had to say no to Sandy?s WTRE pool \/ pizza party at the city pool as the kids were exhausted and grumpy ? plus a t-storm blew through even though we didn?t get near enough rain. We had several new Facebook pictures, including one of Matt at football last year, Paul and our gang heading to a Red?s game, Cousin Lindsey, Kings Island, a neat Star Trek picture and Cousin Kimmy?s boys.
\n The first day of school was Wednesday morning! Despite that, Matt still had football two-a-days. So he was up early and in before school, showered and headed to advanced PE, showered and went to the rest of his classes, had a 2nd practice, showered and came home. We had a lot of laundry this week!! Abby had volleyball practice after school and Luke had football practice out at North Park. I was asked to help coach the team. Tonight was our fist practice with helmets and shoulder pads. Ann went with Amy & Shawna out to Baili?s fundraiser at North high school that evening.
\n Matt again had early football Thursday. I had day off and Matt & I met up with Ann to go to the doctor to have his MRI read. Turns out he has a slap tear in his labrum?Matt has to decide WHEN to repair, not IF?poor kid. It will not heal with out surgery. It is a big decision ? Ann & I will support him with whatever he chooses, but it needs to be his choice. We had a long talk after dinner (Ann had cheeseburgers on the grill!!). Abby went to volleyball practice after school. Matt had football after school as well as Luke ? which was his first with full pads ? fun!! Matt, Ann & I talked for quite a while during the Olympics, regarding: surgery on his shoulder. Again, we have left it up to him?but what I think we would like to see him try and do is to give football a try and see if he can play through the pain and then have surgery on it immediately after the season, before wrestling starts because we don?t think that he will be able to do wrestling this year period – even if he has surgery tomorrow and starts rehabbing. We are looking at 6 months of rehab and that simply is not enough time now to get it done before the end of the wrestling season?so it hurts me to say this out loud, but the sophomore that competed in the semi-state tourney will most likely not be wrestling even one match his junior season. ??? Very sad indeed?<\/p>\n

Friday was Matt?s final two-a-days ? yeah!! I again had the day off and ran the kids to school before coming home to pay bills and then mowed\/trimmed out at Mom & Gigi?s house. I did the same for our front yard before coming in to get cleaned up and taking my lovely wife out on a lunch date to our favorite Chinese restaurant, Panda Garden. Afterwards I worked in the backyard until school ended. Abby had volleyball after school as well as a parents meeting while Matt had football. Matt had his shoulder ?slide??? again during practice, causing him to spend the last hour on the sideline. His line coach wants him to get it fixed now, but he is a gamer and he wants to suit up for tomorrow?s game ? but with one important difference. This time, he wants the trainer to tape it real good with the brace in place to see if that combo will allow him to be pain-free during games. But if he hurts it one time (complete dislocation of the shoulder), he will shut it down and have the surgery right away. If it holds out, he will try and get through the football season. That evening, Abby went out to movies with Megan on a double date.
\n What a busy day it was on Saturday! We were up early and on the road down to North Vernon for the ?Scorpion Back-to-School??? youth baseball tourney. The Stars were up first against Henryville, winning 13-9 in 5 ? innings. Luke went 3-3 with 2 doubles and a single with 2 runs scored while batting 6th and playing pitcher. He had 2 assisted outs and no errors. Next we were supposed to be headed back to Greensburg to cool down on a very hot and humid day to play football out to the varsity football field for Luke?s Blue\/White pee wee game ? which would?ve been Luke?s first scrimmage. But he changed his mind and decided to stay and play with his baseball teammates (there was definitely peer pressure involved from both the coach and ball players!). So we called and told a teammate?s mom who passed it on to his coaches that we would not be making it that day. We stayed in North Vernon and grabbed some lunch at Pizza Hut before returning to the field for the 2nd game which was against the Southern Indiana Dragons ? a travel team that should not be allowed in the field since this is for casual league all-star teams; but we played them anyhow and got whipped 23-12. It was their 50th game of the year ? and the first time they had ever given up 10 runs or more (this was our 10th game of the year). Luke was 2-3 with 2 singles, a run scored & an RBI. We ran and got some snacks at Wal-Mart after the game, which gave us time to cool down (it was so hot out there) and then came back for the 3rd and final game of the day vs. the Seymour Shockers. The Stars came out with a vengeance and won 25-1!! Luke again played pitcher and batted 5th. He was 4-5 with 3 singles and a double to the fence. He had 3 RBIs & 2 runs scored, 3 assists, 1 catch and 1 dropped ball (error). We packed up and headed back to Greensburg to get cleaned up real quick, cool down momentarily and then headed out to Greensburg high school?s Shriver Field for Matt?s varsity Blue & White game. He had his shoulder taped by the trainer and started for the White team at center and strong side defensive tackle. He made it through two series with no issues before he came out when his shoulder ?slid.??? He had to come off the field and did not play again until the 2nd half. He played the rest of the time without any issues, thankfully. I spoke with him, Ann and his head coach after the game ? he was pretty sore afterwards but is willing to have it taped again ? apparently there are different ways to have it taped and he is hoping to try several different ways. Truthfully, tonight wasn?t probably a true test for the shoulder. So we?ll go next week and have a scrimmage vs. Indian Creek and then a real game the following week?and that will be the true test. Hopefully our trainer can find something that works for Matt ? he is truly a gamer! We celebrated a victory ? Matt & the White team ?won??? 10-6 ? by going to El Reparo for dinner and a drink to help wind down a very, very busy day?<\/p>\n

Sunday was another early day as we headed back down to North Vernon again. This time it was for championship day of their ?Scorpion??? Back-to-School tourney. Luke and his Stars team played the Rush Co. All-Stars in the first game. Despite Luke having great success yesterday, he was moved down in the order ? to 6th ? and played pitcher again. The Stars dominated the first game in an 18-2 route to move them in to the semi-finals again. Luke was 2-2 with a single & a very long fly ball double to the fence! He had 1 RBI and scored two runs. We left after the game and Matt drove us to Seymour for brunch at Cracker Barrel. In the semi-final game the Stars faced the host team, North Vernon Heat – whom we beat via 10-run rule last weekend in Seymour. However, our team looked very tired and was flat. The heat finally caught up to them, I think. Several of the kids had been playing out at the ball diamonds all day for two days, unlike Luke who we took shopping, out to eat and was given a chance to cool down and relax. The heat simply caught up to a majority of the team and we came up short, losing 14-8 and again bringing home 3rd place for the third straight weekend. Luke 1-3 with a 200? triple, a sky high pop-up to 3rd and a foul-tip 3rd strike that should?ve been a foul ball (see the video below for yourself!) but was called a strikeout, despite our protest. He also scored 1 the first run even though he batted 6th again. He played pitcher and made a couple of nice plays but also missed a couple of hard hit balls ? not errors but balls he could?ve had. The boys fought hard but just didn?t have enough. Matt did a great job of driving us around all day and it was great that he made it out to support his little brother ? I was proud of him and I know it meant so much to Lukey.<\/p>\n

Now on to this week?on Monday Abby had volleyball practice, Luke had football practice and Matt had football practice, a parent?s meeting and then a driving class. Today was another scorcher as temps topped out around 100 degrees. The little boys had a tough time in that intense heat.
\n Abby headed up to Indy for another doctor appointment with Ann on Tuesday. This time, it was to look at her knees. We still cannot rule out surgery for the poor kid. However, we are still waiting to see how physical therapy does for her. The kids all had practice again that night. It was another hot one on the football field as temps soared above 100 degrees this time and the little guys got a little whiny on us. We still had a great practice and the team is really looking good as I have stressed all week that football is a very easy game if you focus on two things ? blocking and tackling. That is the one thing that I took from all the pep talks from high school and college ball ? blocking & tackling are the most important things on the gridiron, so that is what I have focused on with these young boys.
\n Poor Abby headed back up to Indy again for yet another doctor appointment with Ann on Wednesday. This time, it was to look at her spine. The good news is that we don?t have any further follow up, other than a 6 month check-up (finally some good news!). Abby had volleyball and Matt had both football practice and a driving class that evening. I surprised him when I came to pick him up by following him through town and bugging him by taking pictures and video.<\/p>\n

On Thursday, we finally had sustained rain during the overnight hours but cleared up before work. We have had several storms through the two weeks that have made for good fireworks but not much in terms of accumulated precipitation. We are still way behind in terms of annual rainfall and most of the crops that we pass in the countryside on the way to and from work are withering in this intense summer?s heat. The kids all had practice that night after school. It rained again that night and it finally brought about a much-needed cool down in the weather. We finally opened up the house and enjoyed the cool breeze. It was the first time in a very long time.
\n On Friday, we picked up Abby from volleyball practice and headed up to Trafalgar for our last pre-season scrimmage varsity football game. This was the scene of our final football game last year so there was an air of payback on the Greensburg sidelines. However, it would be an uphill climb. Indian Creek came ready to play and started on offense. They dominated our defense in the 1st half. Our offense also struggled in the 1st half. We made some halftime adjustments after some ass-chewing and came around nicely in the second half. They don?t keep track of scoring, but they scored more often than we did and looked great. We have some positives we can take from this and build upon it as we head in to our first ?game week??? practices. Matt did not start and in fact the coach did not even want him to participate, but you know Matt. He is a gamer and not only dressed but got varsity reps on both sides of the ball. It was on the offensive side, during the very first play that he again had his shoulder slide. Thankfully it did not pop out, but it was still scary. He sat out the remainder of the 1st half and then played most of the 2nd half. He had no further incidents with his shoulder but he was sure sore that night. <\/p>\n

Matt had football practice on Saturday morning. Luke & I had our first taste of pee wee football at the Greensburg Jamboree. Abby was kind enough to donate her time by volunteering her time in the concession stand. Matt also came over after his practice and watched for a while before also volunteering in the concession stand (thanks guys!). After a minor meltdown by Luke was averted in the parking lot (he had nerves really bad!), we geared up, weighed in (Luke is red-striped) and headed out for our first taste of action against someone other than ourselves. Up first, we faced Milan. We looked very good on defense, only giving up a touchdown on the very last play! Luke started at left tackle and learned quite a lot that first go round. In the second period, he started again ? this time at left guard. He again learned quite a bit and played a majority of the snaps on both sides of the ball as we scored three touchdowns against the larger team. We took a very short break and played a 2nd game vs. South Dearborn. This time, I was asked to stay on the field with the defense. Luke again played defensive tackle and then we moved him to defensive end (my old position). He looked pretty good. We did a great job right until the end and again, just before time expired, we surrendered our first touchdown. Offensively, we moved the ball at will and played several kids at different positions. The boys? successes were made sweeter with the knowledge that we were missing our starting quarterback. We praised the boys afterwards for all the hard work and the smiles on those boys? faces was exactly why I agreed to help Brian coach this group of kids ? the boys were hooked on football. Luke had a couple tackles today, several pancakes on offense and even recovered a fumble! I can?t say enough about how quickly he is catching on. He has only been playing football for about a week and a half now. I think it could be a fun season!! Abby went to the bowling alley with her friend Megan and then Megan stayed the night with us. She left early on Sunday as we took it easy and cleaned up around the house, catching up on our DVR and watching the final day of the Olympics, including the closing ceremonies. The John Lennon \/ Imagine tribute was obviously my favorite portion, though I also enjoyed the ?Walrus??? portion with Russell Brand ? very psychadelic. The US is winning in the total medal count as well as the gold medal. We watched the men?s basketball game (we taped earlier), the races at Watkins Glenn (Jeff was in 10th going in to the last turn, wrecked and finished 21st) as well as all the other taped shows we?d missed over the past couple weeks.<\/p>\n
