On Monday, we left work early to get the week started off with a bang. While Abby was at dance practice for about 4 hours, Matt had a track meet in Shelbyville. Ann got Luke & Bu and headed to the dance studio while I took off for Shelby-tucky. Matt had a good time competing, but still didn?t place. I think his interest in track is waning as baseball season is in full swing now. His best shot put throw was 32? 6??? which is not that far off from his personal best. However, while he is staying fairly consistent, his teammates are slowly improving. He still has a good time and has a great attitude, which is why all his teammates like him. To that end, Shelbyville has a patch of grass between the throwing circle and dirt pit about 25 feet wide. He was so relieved when all three throws made it across! (And no; not everyone did). He did not throw discuss that night, so I split early and headed home. They were able to figure out the issue with the blower fan, but had to order a $600 part (yippee)?the brake job was free?but don?t get me started. At work, Dennis came in for the week to do the EOC portion of our corporate mock survey. We will have more corporate folks in-house next week as well. That night, I helped facilitate softball practice with Abby?s team and Ann took Matt to baseball practice. On Wednesday, we woke up to a frost advisory. The dogs had a rude awakening at 5 am when they trotted their hyper little butts outside and got about 5 steps in to the yard and stopped; peed real quick and sprinted back inside. That night, I dropped off Luke at baseball practice and ran out to Wal-Mart with Abby to pick up a dozen softballs for her to practice pitching. We got her set up with a pitching rubber, home plate, a milk crate and count off 40 feet. She can now practice her pitching anytime ? with or without me. Thursday was warmer and busier. After work, I picked up Luke and took him to his first practice game. I ended up helping coach his team. We played a very good team that was very well coached and we got beat, despite keeping it close. Luke went 2 for 3, batting pretty low in the order. He played pitcher the entire game and looked lost most of the game. We got his uniform and schedule after the game. Unexpectedly, they gave me a shirt and hat?looks like I?m hooked in for another year. Back at the van, we started talking about the game and he said he wanted to quit. So I said OK and proceeded to take his shirt and hat back to the coach. He suddenly changed his mind and decided to talk to me about why he was so discouraged. He is so competitive that if he doesn?t go 3-for3 with three homeruns and all the outs on defense, he thinks he failed. I?m not sure where that comes from, since I?m pretty sure we encourage him regularly; but we talked for a while and he was much better five minutes later. He had a nasty strawberry Ann got Bu and went to Matt?s track meet vs. Batesville. He threw shot and discus that night and got 5th place. The Pirates beat the Bulldogs 73-27 to raise their record to 6-0 (the coach counts ties as a victory and the results of the East Central meet has still not been finalized). Ann and the kids left the meet early to run Matt out to the ball diamonds for his first practice game. Matt went 0-1 with a good at-bat that ended up with a few foul balls and eventually a strikeout on a nasty curveball.

On Friday, I attended a conference up in Indy ? sponsored by our sister facility and my former employer (Valle Vista) on the topic of Psychological First Aid.
