With that in mind, 5:15 came awful early. I dropped Matt off at the high school (that still sounds funny) for his early morning football workout. It was raining as I headed out to walk that morning, so Abby & Luke grabbed a couple umbrellas and joined me. Grandma picked up Matt, brought him back home and picked up Abby. She took both Abby and Grace to basketball camp. Matt had to miss both his afternoon football practice and his band practice in order to attend his baseball game. In fact, all three kids had games that night. It was so hot and humid all day. I was covered in sweat most of the day at work, so what was another three hours at the ball diamonds, right? Matt is still struggling at the plate, going 0-2 again with a pair of K?s. Defensively, he didn?t get any action either. He later joked that he didn?t even touch the ball the entire evening. As for the game, Ann described it as painful. There were several errors on both sides and the game was very long. It eventually was called due to lightning when they were down by 4 runs. The second game of the night was Abby?s. She was officially 0-1 with two walks and a run scored. She also said she had a good slide, LOL. She played shortstop most of the night, finishing at catcher in the last inning. She played very well, earning the special recognition award after the game for her defensive prowess! She caught a ball in the air and had a few assists as well. The team she played was one that had beaten them pretty soundly earlier in the season. It is the team she was hoping to get on, one of her former teams that was very successful when she played with them. Come to think of it; that may be the last team I pitched for? They?re still no slouch this year either. Anyhow, they ended up beating this time out, as the girls continue to get better and better ? despite only having 9 girls at the game!! Luke was the final game of the night. He played the Yankees and they embarrassed us the last time we played them. This night, it was a little different. Luke played left field the whole game, not moving to pitcher later in the game as he has the previous three games, in an attempt to try and stabilize our deteriorated infield. We learned that night that one of our better hitters and fielders was moving out of town and not coming back. In the field, he had a chance to catch a fly ball but was tentative and let it one-hop him. He also stopped two ground balls that came his way and chased down another one that was over the centerfielder?s head. At the plate, his swing has suddenly changed. He?s developed a bad habit of half-swinging at balls since the bat throwing incident. I think we need to do some work on that this week with a couple bucket of balls in the back yard or out at the ball diamonds, whenever we can find a few moments to get away by ourselves. He went 1-3, with a strikeout, fielder?s choice and a single. We were down by three runs when the lightning started. We had to pull the kids off the field. After about 10 minutes, we determined it wasn?t going to get any better, as a major storm was rolling in to town, so it was called ? giving us yet another loss. The other assistant coach is going in for open-heart surgery, so it will be interesting to see if the boys respond a little better in an atmosphere of less pressure? That night, Luke & I repaired his bicycle tire yet again. When I got it off (of course it was the back tire) and we dunked the tube in soapy water, we could see that the patch I put on the other day didn?t hold. These were some kind of new-fangled glue-less patch ? just peel and stick. This time, I took my time plugging it, added a few extra patches and used half as much air pressure. It seemed to hold much better. Heck, a couple more times and Lukey?ll be able to change his own tires! We had a quick bite to eat, put the kids to bed, watched the 2nd-to-last episode of Saving Grace and called it a night. God; what a long way to start off the day!

<img decoding="async" loading="lazy" src="http://scheumann.us/BlogPhotos/asbp10.6b.jpg" height="400" width="300" border="0" practice again. Luke joined me on my morning walk before work. It was still extremely hot and humid?what is this, Florida? Abby again had basketball camp out at the high school. Matt was the only scheduled baseball game that night, causing him to miss both his afternoon football practice and his second band practice. We had to take him to the ball diamonds early for pictures. After we dropped him off, the other kids and I went out to Wal-Mart to get another new inner tube ? yes another one. This makes the 2nd tube, following a new tire and 2 repairs to the last tube. That poor kid hasn?t brought his bike back from Brandy?s with 2 working wheels in over a week. 🙁 We got a call from Matt that his game was cancelled due to Rush County not making the trip down because of the threat of severe weather. It was just as well, since it again pounded us with some really severe thunderstorms and even a tornado warning. In honor of having the night off, Ann bought steaks (she tried to find my favorites, T-bones, but could only find Porterhouses) and we grilled out! It was the first time we?d grilled out steaks this year and they did not disappoint? In other news, my Lakers really took it to the Celtics in the first blow out of the series to force game 7 of the NBA finals, which should be a classic! Needless to say, it rained all night again? By Wednesday morning, it finally began to subside. It was an interesting trip in to work ? high water, debris on the road from downed limbs and even a car in the ditch. We took the dogs in to the groomers that morning. They needed a day at the spa really bad. They did such a good job with them ? especially Molly. Although Matt didn?t have football, he did have a baseball practice in the morning for a few hours where Coach Carey worked on his swing mechanics. Abby went to her last day of basketball camp. She also went to a health fair with Mom, Sandy & Grace. Later, she went with Amy & Baili to putt-putt and got a hole-in-one on the 1st hole! She and Baili also fed a squirrel apparently, judging by the picture Amy sent us! Abby got to spend much of her week at Grandma?s house. I was sweaty the entire day due to the extreme humidity that persisted. That night it was just more of the same, as we spent our entire evening out at the ball diamonds again in the blazing heat. Abby started us off. She had several teammates missing ? six total. Even so, with a team of 8 fielders (only two outfielders), they put the hammer on another team which had beaten them earlier in the year. In fact, they put the smack down on them, beating them by 10, 14-4. Abby did great in the field, playing at shortstop most of the game and even played a little bit at third base. She had a few assists and looked much more confident at short. At bat, she went 3-3 with a walk, for a perfect 4 times up and 4 times on base! She had a couple singles and a double, hitting the grass and thus earning the coveted ice cream from Dairy Point this weekend. 😛 We had a break between games, so we ran out to Wendy?s real quick before starting Luke?s game. Matt joined me on the field to help coach, as both the head coach Derrick and the other assistant John were out. Derrick played for most of the game, but grumpy, hard-nosed John is out for the season with heart surgery. Luke had a big hit early in the game to drive in a couple runs and hit the grass. His focus, of course, was all about the ice cream! 😉 Unfortunately, he also had 2 strike outs due to poor pitching. Granted, Luke needs to be able to hit balls that aren?t grooved down the middle, but it?s awfully hard for a six-year-old to hit balls bouncing off the plate and dodging the ball to keep from being hit. I don?t mean to blame the coach?s pitching, I remember first hand how hard it can be to pitch to little guys of that size?and how awful I felt when I would strike out our own people. When Coach Derrick had to leave however, instead of calling upon me to pitch (I initially pitched last year on Derrick & I?s team during all our pre-season practices and then he suddenly decided to pitch during games?needless to say, our team started very slowly, since they had to adjust to his pitching after 3 weeks of my pitching?), he asked another kid?s dad to come in cold and pitch to our kids. Think you can guess the outcome of that one? It was a hard fought game that we were in right until that last inning. However, we had too many mental errors on defense and then couldn?t do anything on offense with the new pitcher and another victory slipped away?

<img decoding="async" loading="lazy" finally subsided! It was a beautiful day and evening. Matt again had an early football practice ? and again had to miss the afternoon football practice and his third band practice due to a baseball game that evening. Abby attended a vacation bible school with Grace at their new church. We were glad to see that they finally got out of their old church, which had so many ties to the Buchanan?s that it was unhealthy for them to be attending?good for them. Abby then went to WTRE and did some recordings with Gigi before coming back home with Grandma & Grace to go swimming. Luke went on out to the ballpark with Brandy, where we met them during Matt?s game. Matt again played his old team. He played 2nd base and left field. The only action he saw on the defensive was a hit out to him in left. He charged the ball, grabbed it and came up firing. He hit the cutoff man, who turned and hurled the ball towards the plate. The catcher had no chance at the ball, as it went wildly high and to the left, but it showed that the boys are getting better. Just like Luke?s team the night before, Matt?s team was at least competitive. They showed some signs of life as they scored several runs and ended up losing by only a handful. Matt went 1-2 with a strikeout followed by his first hit of the month (or at least the first in a while)! Even in his strikeout at-bat, he ran the count to full and looked good with his swings. The adjustments his coach made obviously made an impact and for once, it looks like he actually paid attention! 😉 Abby met up with her good friend Megan out at the game and when her sister?s game was over, went back over to their house for the evening. Ann went over to Christy?s house to plan the boys? birthday party. After talking about it for a couple weeks now, the boys and their moms have decided to have a joint birthday party for their 7th birthdays. Luke ended up spending the night with Alex and was so excited to pack his ?buffalo??? bag (or duffel bag, as you and I know it as) for the overnight event. Matt crapped out on me early, so I had to watch the Lakers win an ugly game 7 against the Celtics. It was a classic though, going back and forth. Kobe Bryant sucked for 3 quarters before finally getting it together in the final quarter and winning by about 4 points!! Also, Sandy brought over her camera disc for me to pillage pictures off from our Memorial Day party!

<img decoding="async" loading="lazy" That?s one thing I?ve never gotten used to ? that awful smell first thing in the morning a couple times each week?it?s no way to start a day, believe me. Apparently the whole town is downwind of a rendering plant > pee ewe! Matt decided not to attend the optional football practice due to the heat index being up over 100 degrees. Luke stayed with Alex for most of the day before going to Brandy?s house. Abby went with Grandma again, attending Vacation Bible School with Grace and then went to her friend Brooke?s house. They ended up at that the city pool for several hours. Luke made the mistake of swimming at Brandy?s and then he & Matt walked the dogs (Matt walked over and got him from Brandy?s). It was way too hot for the dogs; they didn?t make it ? they had to be carried about halfway back to the house. Ann was supposed to take the dogs to the vet for shots, but she ended up staying at the courthouse in Columbus with Dan & George too late (don?t ask?long story) and simply ran out of time to take them. When she got home, she went scrapbooking with her friends at Mrs. B?s. When I got home, Luke was nearly asleep on the couch. I made him get up long enough to eat, but he didn?t eat much and laid down on the couch and ended up snoozing for about 45 minutes. We met up with Ann out at the ball diamonds for Luke?s game. He had the late game, but it actually started on time for once. We played the Cubbies, which beat us by 20 earlier in the season. That?s not the way it played out this night. We went back and forth, scoring the maximum of 5 runs in each of the first 3 innings. Going in to the fourth inning, we were tied at 15. We only scored 2 in the top of the inning and they ended up scoring 4 before reaching the time limit for the game, so we never had another chance to hit in the 5th inning. 🙁 The kids were really hitting the ball well, but our defensive is just plain awful. Luke went 2-3 with a single and a double ? both to the outfield grass! He was so excited!! I was worried with him exerting so much energy in the day and then sleeping, I figured he?d be too sluggish to play well. He did start slow, but then got going. He was struck out by 5 awful pitches in his last at-bat. Again, I don?t blame Derrick, he can be a really good pitcher?but he can also get in a funk as well? After the game, Ann went back to scrapbooking and the boys and I went to pick up Abby and go home for some nighttime swimming. The water was just the thing to cool down on such a hot night. Abby said that she had gone to the city pool with her friend Brooke, so she was pretty wiped out by the time we got back inside. Guess what it started to do when we came inside?? Yep; you guessed it, more severe thunderstorms?just what we needed. It stormed the entire night and didn?t stop until mid-morning on Saturday. The kids got to bed pretty late, considering we had to be up early in the morning for Ann?s company picnic the next morning.

<img decoding="async" loading="lazy" their way to ensure the family can have a good time. In the past two years, we?ve been to the children?s museum and an Indian?s baseball game, among many other fun places over the past decade. Ann is celebrating her 10th year with the company. This year we headed up to Indy to go to the Zoo. We made really good time on our way up. Our first stop was the dolphin show. Luke & Bu sat up front near the tank in the kids section, right in the front row and got soaked! Matt sat with the old folks a little higher up. It was a fun way to start the day. We went from there to the food tent that Ann?s work had set up and grabbed lunch. Next, it was off to see the animals. It was hot, but not nearly as miserable as the last trip to this zoo a few years back. Some of our favorites were the giraffes, cheetahs, baboons and the sharks, where each of the kids got to pet several of the sharks. The kids rode the little rollercoaster a couple times, Abby purchased some horribly horrendous eyewear and we cut out and headed home. When we got back home, Matt & Ann went to bed ? wiped out from the mornings? activities. Luke, Bu & I headed outdoors to load up the truck and head to Grandma & Gigi?s house. After I got done with their lawn, we loaded up their mower that Dee-Dee uses and brought it home to diagnose why it was having issues running smoothly and not starting very easily. I quickly discovered that they had the wrong blade installed and an old spark plug that had rusted. We headed over to Tops to pick up our materials and some popcorn. We talked to Gigi?s brother Rich (who works the service desk) about their other brother (Kenny), who was recently diagnosed with cancer and we spoke a while about him. We got the girls? mower working good and took it back. Sandy & I went to the radio station where she gave me an audio file of Abby from last week when she visited the WTRE studio. The kids picked up sticks as I mowed & trimmed. The spraying I did last week has really made a difference this week. It was so much easier to trim and the grass that was in the cracks of our drive is gone as well. Next Abby & I got up on the roof as Luke went bike riding with Oakley and his sister. We cleaned out the downspout openings and scraped some mud out of a couple spots in the troughs and got the balls (and a Gatorade bottle?) down as well. I noticed we were missing some shingles and there were a couple of lumpy spots as well as a couple squishy spots too. Ann noticed a smell and a new wet spot on the ceiling in the laundry room so I called my guy at work that is good at fixing stuff like this and we?ll try to get something lined up next week for a repair before it does major damage. Abby picked up doggie poo in the backyard as Luke, Abby and Oakley jumped in the pool while I mowed / trimmed back there. I got out behind the privacy fence in the back lot for the first time in a couple weeks and was surprised to find a big patch of standing water at the bottom of the incline?which made my shoes squishy the rest of the evening. By the time I finished everything in the back yard, Matt had finally woke up and joined the kids in the pool. I finished up a few other chores around the house, cleaned up all the tools and put everything away before jumping in for a dip myself. The water was a perfect 89? and was just the thing to wind down such a busy, hot day. We came in just as it was getting dark and Ann had woken up and was making popcorn. It wasn?t long after I finished my bowl that I passed out on the couch. Luke had Oakley spend the night and they made a tent / fort out in the playroom where they apparently slept.

<img decoding="async" loading="lazy" When I didn?t hear any other noises, I figured someone had just left. Ann was still in bed with me; Matt was snoring; Abby was crashed on the couch but the boys were no where to be found. When I went outside, I saw them rounding the corner on their bikes. When they came back around, they came in and we had a talk (little shits?). They played in the house, waking everyone else up as I got a head start on my daily chores. The boys and Abby went swimming (it was gorgeous this morning) before Oakley?s sister, Makayla, came to pick him up. The kids were then sent off to pick up their rooms and spaces in the playroom. Ann went out to the store and got stuff for lunch?she made me my annual Father?s Day lasagna (my fave)! I was a good boy and called my Dads. I got through to Dad B, who was gearing up to go out and work in his yard, but I missed Dad S, who was already on the links. It was good to talk to Barb, who said some very nice things. Dad S called me back after getting back from playing golf with Uncle John and Barney out at John?s course ? Coyote Crossing. After lunch, Ann and the kids gave me a bunch of really cool things, including Hot Wheels, sugar-free chocolate candy, a laptop cooler (man, this thing gets hot!) and a really cool magnetic note board for work that had a darling picture of the kids taken earlier this morning in our back yard with them holding signs that together say Happy Father?s Day. Next, we watched the race and took a nap (I love taking naps during the middle part of NASCAR races!) and then it was time for me to pay-up for all the successful at-bats this past week at the ball park by taking the kids over to Dairy Point for huge ice cream cones! When we got home, the kids washed the Grand Caravan and the Pacifica before coming in at sundown for some popcorn and chilled as we watched Cops until bedtime.

Here are our videos for the week. The 5th one is actually an audio sample of a new recording that surfaced this week after 40 years in someone?s basement. It is an awesome audience recording of Led Zeppelin?s legendary performance at the 1970 Bath Festival!! This is the find of the year!

Tuesday was really wet when we woke up and took Matt to football practice again.

The best news the next day was that the rain, heat and humidity had finally subsided!

Friday brought about a much warmer day, but it was really stinky. That?s one thing I?ve never gotten used to ? that awful smell first thing in the morning a couple times each week?it?s no way to start a day, believe me.

The cool thing about Ann?s company picnics is that they go out of their way to ensure the family can have a good time.

On Sunday, I woke up suddenly to the sound of our front door shutting. When I didn?t hear any other noises, I figured someone had just left.

The first two are from the week and include mostly ball games and storms. The 3rd one is mostly our trip to the Indy Zoo. The 4th one is the video I made from Sandy?s audio of Bu at the ?TRE station. The 5th one is actually an audio sample of a new recording that surfaced this week after 40 years in someone?s basement. It is an awesome audience recording of Led Zeppelin?s legendary performance at the 1970 Bath Festival!! This is the find of the year! The clip included here is one of the greatest blues songs ever recorded?

Whew! What a week. But enough of the new stuff; let?s take a look at our Waybac feature. First off, Aunt Sharon sent us a bunch of pictures, some of which we?ve featured before but are worth a second look. Leading off we have three from January of 1980 in their home in Kokomo on S Waugh St: the 1st is the four of us kids (I am 11, Rob is 2 months, Nathan is 4 and Katie is 1; the next one is stud-ly Grandpa Bryan and curly Grandma B with Rob & I and the 3rd is the 3 birthday boys in their dining room; the next is a couple from the ?08 Bryan Christmas in Rossville just before Mom & Dad moved to Florida: Mom & I in their kitchen and Mom & Dad in the living room; and finally Katie?s kids: Brody at 2 years of age, Katie & Reese at 6 weeks, Reese at 2 months and then Reese at 6 weeks again.

Next up we have what I assume to be my Great Grandma Morgan in what I am assuming is about the 1920?s (the pic was in an envelope with my Grandmaw Brown?s pictures and no identification); Aunt Midge w/ what I think is Grandpaw (but may be her 1st husband?) in May of ?61 at the vacation cabin from Mom?s youth; Mom in her living room on Elmwood St. in July of ?61 and Keith?s baby picture in ?66.

Next up is Mom w/ her parents in October of 1973, Ann & Keith?s school pictures from 1977; Ann?s school picture from the fall of about ?82; Dad B with Rob in our Rockwood St home in about February of ?83; Me with my 1st stereo at the end of ?83 in the same living room and then a picture of my book shelves in my room in early ?84.

And finally, we have Mom & Dad B in early ?88 in LP; Christmas Day in LaPorte with Grandpaw, Dad B and Rob eating lunch and Dad & I opening presents earlier that day; Mom & Matt in another picture from Christmas Day in ?96 in our apartment and then the day after Christmas with our budding family in Columbus in ?96.

Well that raps it up for this edition of the Scheu Family Blog. Thanks for keeping up with us this time out and we?ll catch up with you next time. Until then, have a good one.
Later, Scheu

[1
