What an exciting week we?ve had at the Scheu abode. Matt went back to football practice after last week?s mandatory moratorium. All three kids participated in their year-end tournaments. And the weather was dry for the most part. We had an isolated rain shower late in the week, but otherwise enjoyed perfect weather. On Monday, we said good-bye to Gracie with a pizza party and a musical put on by Gigi and company. She is headed to New Hampshire to stay the rest of the summer with Chad. Gigi ordered a bunch of Pizza King pies. My favorite was the Cowboy pizza. We wished her well and came home to do our weekly chores and run Brayton back home. That night, Abby played her next tourney game against her old team, coached by Kim Myers. Bu went 2 for 3 with a run scored and 2 RBI?s. She played very well at the start of the game but began to feel bad as the evening progressed. This was a tough team that had beaten them twice during the season, but this night the girls were on it and soundly beat the Main Source team to move in to the quarterfinals, thanks to some great pitching! It was so hot and humid that night. Abby wilted like a flower in the summer sun. They played a doubleheader, as they progressed in the tourney and knocked out the other team. In the second half of the night, they faced NAPA to see who went on to the finals. Abby?s health continued to deteriorate. She struck out twice in a row and made several errors at shortstop. Ann gave her some ibuprofen to get her by. After four innings, she began feeling better and finally got a hit and started to field again. However, it was too little / too late as time ran out on the girls and they lost by a couple runs to finish third in the tourney ? quite an accomplishment for this band of spunky little gals that started off 0-6 this year. They got some nice trophies from the city and then Coach Shannon handed out special team awards. Abby won the two big ones: Most Valuable Hitter as well as the Defensive MVP for her play at shortstop this season! She would?ve also been my vote for most improved this year, considering where she came from last year ? I didn?t even know if she would play this year. By the way, NAPA would go on to beat the #1 team twice in the championship games to take home the title. So we can at least say that we were beaten by the eventual tourney champs. Coach Shannon treated all the girls to ice cream at the Parkside shop.

Tuesday morning saw Matthew back at the high school for football practice again. Abby still felt awful, so Ann took her to see the doctor. It turned out she had strep throat! She is such a gamer; I am very proud of her for playing through her illness when her teammates needed her the most. ?poor kid? So with one kid done for the year, we headed back to the ball diamonds for Matt?s next tourney game. Abby stayed over at Grandma & Gigi?s house during the game to escape the intense heat. Matt?s Yankees drew his old team the Rangers for the right to play in the championship game. It was never even close. They were smoked in a VERY ugly game, 20-1…and it could?ve been worse. Matt?s team didn?t have their two ace players – who are their pitchers/catchers/#3 & 4 hitters. 1 of them got arrested and the other decided to go play with a team down in Westport. With these two major cogs missing from their lineup, their offense was paltry?and on defense, their pitching was atrocious. Matt only had one at-bat. He hit the ball sharply with a line drive to center. It should?ve been a hit and looked like it off the bat until the last minute and then out of nowhere, the centerfielder dove for the ball and miraculously caught it. We joked that it was a Top 10 play for SportsCenter?s Web Gems! It was especially tough for Matt since the hit was off his good friend Andrew Douglas, who was with us on Memorial Day. So now Andrew has bragging rights until next year?

On Wednesday, it was Luke?s turn to start tourney action. His team fared much better, facing his old coach from last year. This year the Yankees had beaten us by 10-run rule earlier in the season. Luke had a tough time getting good pitching from Coach Derrick. Luke went 1-3 in a high-scoring affair that went extra innings. He stopped both balls that made their way to his section of the outfield. He scored a run, showing off for Mom by sliding even when he didn?t need to. 😛 We had a lead as the time limit neared. If we had lasted another 30 seconds at-bat, we would?ve won after the 5th inning. As it was, we let them come back up in the 6th inning and tie us. They eventually took the lead in the 7th inning, but the little Mets came from behind to win by 1 run in the bottom of the seventh and advance to the semi-final round of the tourney! We went home on this hot & humid evening to take a dip in the pool, whose waters were a bath water-like 93?! Even the dogs both went for a dip. We were careful not to let Molly get any water in her ear, since she is taking medicine for dual ear infections?

On Thursday, I took Matt back to football practice at 6 am. That night, Luke?s team played the #1 team in the league, the Blue Jays. They only lost 1 game all year, entering the tourney undefeated. They are led by our old neighbor?s (and good friends, the Welage?s) youngest son, Andrew. Our boys got down early in the game and had their heads down after the first inning. We pulled them in and I gave them a rah-rah talk and they responded well. They scored 14 runs that night and held on to win by 1 run to eliminate the #1 seed and advance to the championship game!! Luke went 2-3 with an RBI and scored 2 runs – one was a very valuable (and close play at the plate) run late in the game that put us ahead for good. The boys were so excited afterwards!! Matt?s team didn?t do nearly as well. Although the Marlins had a good lead by the third inning; the Yankees never gave up and cut the lead to 5 by the 6th inning. In fact, they had quite the rally going by the time Matt got up. They had the bases loaded with two outs and Matt coming up to bat. He had struck out in his earlier at-bat and this one would turn out to be his final plate appearance. He had a 2-2 count, bases loaded, 2 outs and down by five runs?and of all things, the coach has the kid on 3rd try to steal home?HOME! Of all the bone-headed moves that could?ve happened at that time, the kid tries to steal home? The move totally disrespected Matt, as it took the bat out of his hands. The kid was out by a mile at the plate; it really wasn?t even close ? I honestly don?t know what he and the coach were thinking. ?and just like that, Matt?s season was over. We?ll never know if he would?ve gotten a base hit, struck out against his old buddy, Tyler Hogg, or what?and that?s the point, we?ll never know. For Matt, it was an anti-climatic end to a disappointing season. He did not like the team or his teammates. He honestly didn?t fit in with those kids at all; I hope to God he has a better experience next year ? he deserves it. I have to say he really came on strong at the end of the season! Even though they captured third place in the tourney, there was no trophy presentation?no speech or thanks to the kids or parents by the coach. The game simply ended and the kids all went their separate ways. It was really quite sad actually. I felt bad for Matt since all this was out of his hands?

<img decoding="async" loading="lazy" src="http://scheumann.us/BlogPhotos/lbtbj1.jpg" height="400" width="300" that there was no one there. So we came home and he went to bed while we went to work. That evening, we were all pumped up to encourage Lukey?s team against a very potent Cub?s team. The fair opened that night, which meant that end of town was a complete mess. It took us a little while to navigate through all the traffic. They tried to charge us $2 to park, but when I explained that we had a little one playing in the championship game, they let us on through. Luke?s coach wasn?t as lucky, having to pay to park. Lukey went 2-3 with a double, a run scored and an RBI. This was a game of streaks. The Cubs gained the momentum early and took a sizeable lead at 8-1. The Mets battled back to tie the game at 13-13. We made some mental errors late in the game and lost by 1 run in the bottom of the last inning to fall just a hair short and take 2nd in the tourney after battling all the way back to finish 3rd in the league (according to Derrick). We were so proud of all the kids. They fought really hard all year and learned a lot. Again; like Abby’s team – these kids also got better very late in the season. We are so proud of Luke?s accomplishments this year, his first in Rookie ball. He received a very nice trophy for runner-up in the tourney and a medal for 3rd in the league. We said goodbye to our older boys who will be moving up next year to Minor league and Derrick invited all the kids over to get ice cream at the Parkside Treats shop by the putt-putt course. However; since we didn?t know if he could have it or not because of allergy; we decided to take him and the kids out to Buffalo Wing & Rings (Luke?s choice) for dinner. We were going to go get ice cream, but decided we were full enough and agreed to go get some tomorrow.

<img decoding="async" loading="lazy" When I finally got motivated, Luke and I went over and mowed at Mom & Sandy?s home. It was good to visit with Mom who is still adjusting to a quieter house with Gracie out east. Luke & I came home and continued working outside in the hot afternoon air, mowing our lawn and working in the backyard for a little while. Our little flowering tree in the back looks like its dead. I?m not sure if there is much I can do for it. Mom; see if Dad has any ideas? This week, Ann took pictures of all the girls on Abby?s team and all the boys on Luke?s team during the trophy presentations. She is working on getting all their parents? email addresses to send the pictures to them, which I thought was pretty cool of her. After nap time, we decided to go out to the county fair (not that Luke asked us 64 times through the day or anything) for dinner and some fun. Our first stop was at the Smyrna church food booth for a Smyrna burger (a unique sloppy Joe with cheese sauce and relish) for Ann & Bu, pork burgers for Matt & I and a Smyrna milk shake for Lukey. I also had to grab a Lett?s Fire Dept. fish sandwich. When we go to sit down, who do we see, but none other than Mom, Gigi, Deanna & Jamie. So we had dinner with them and visited for a while. Next, we went to the 4-H building and checked out Grace?s award winning entry. Then it was off to the animal barns. We caught up with our friends, the Ewing?s. Baili is showing sheep, goats, chickens and even a turkey. After talking with them for a while, we finally got that ice cream the kids have been bugging me for all week and then went through the vendor buildings to get all the free stuff. We came out with some cool ?Luke for Sheriff??? paraphernalia, a bunch of ink pens and of course our perennial favorite ? a couple yard sticks. 🙂 Next, it was off to the midway. Mom & Gigi both won a couple stuffed animals (Grandma donated her dog to Lukey) as they and the kids all played ski-ball. Luke played ping pong ball game for gold fish and actually won two! He also did his annual pull a duck and won a dart gun again this year. Then it was time to ride a few rides. Luke talked Jamie in to riding the Crazy Bus with him. We noticed that after 4 straight years of exactly the same rides in the exact same place, they finally added a new ride for the little kids and at least re-arranged all the rides so that it looks completely different this year. The kids rode a bunch of different rides, but not them all; we wanted to keep them interested and wanting to come back for more. Luke was tall enough for the first time to ride all the rides on the midway this year. He was so excited to ride the Pharoah?s Fury ride for the first time and drive his own bumper car for the first time (actually, one of his friends jumped in at the last minute and Luke drove both of them!). ?and he promised he was going to stay small forever for us?

<img decoding="async" loading="lazy" src="http://scheumann.us/BlogPhotos/ffn10.1.jpg" height="300" As we have for over a decade now, we parked the truck over at WTRE and set up camp in their front yard, complete with our portable chairs and jambox in the back of the truck. The portable gazebo helped immensely with the heat and we received several compliments on our setup from parade participants?plus it always gives the candy throwers a target to aim for? The kids and I played football and Frisbee before the parade made it to our location. They were asked not to throw candy this year due to someone stupid filing a law suit last year when a rogue piece of candy hit a child in the eye or something silly like that?so now only a few people handed candy to kids; but instead of the kids bringing home 2 full Wal-Mart bags full of goodies, they barely filled 1/10 of one bag?guess we?ll have to buy candy for Halloween after all! 🙂 We always joke that this candy actually lasts our kids until then? We saw several people we knew, including Grandma & Gigi. Grandma had to hand out candy to select kids and $2 bills to the grandkids. Then she wanted the kids to ride with them the rest of the way out to the fairgrounds, so the kids all piled in and left me high and dry to put all the stuff back away after the parade (?figures?). No, it was fun to see them run out and jump in the truck with Sandy and Maryann – even though they held up the parade procession for a minute or so… They were thrilled and felt like local celebrities ? you could see it on their faces! Gigi won another stuffed animal (for Bu this time) at the ski ball. The kids came home and Abby?s little friend, Carly, came over and they all went swimming. Even the dogs got in again. The water was nearly as warm as it was earlier in the week before the rain. We had pizza for dinner and then Ann made us all funnel cakes as we watched a Harry Potter movie and chilled out, worn out from the busy week that is behind us now?

Before we put an end to the new stuff, here are our weekly videos for your enjoyment:

?and just in case you missed it; earlier in the week, we passed a milestone – the 30th anniversary from the last “real” Zeppelin concert. Thanks for keeping up with us this week and we?ll catch up with you next time. Until then, have a good one.
Later, Scheu

Wow!

On Friday, we were up early to get Matt over to football only to find out that there was no one there.

On Saturday, we slept in (man was that nice!). When I finally got motivated, Luke and I went over and mowed at Mom & Sandy?s home.

Sunday brought back the annual fair parade down Park Rd. As we have for over a decade now, we parked the truck over at WTRE and set up camp in their front yard, complete with our portable chairs and jambox in the back of the truck.

Bonham would pass out in the middle of the first set and would not return to the stage with Led Zeppelin again, as he would die 2 months later?

And now let?s take a look at our weekly Waybac feature. Leading off, we have my Grandpaw Brown at his dining room table in early ?64 after mushroom hunting, one of his favorite pastimes; Mom B showing off her assets on graduation day in May of ?67 in her living room; Grandpaw Brown in his police uniform towards the end of his tenure in early ?72 – he would serve for 23 years on the force before retiring and becoming a sheriff?s deputy for another 12; and me in my Bears sweatshirt, playing cops and robbers with Grandmaw Brown in her house in Lafayette in December of 1974.

Next up is Ann in her 2nd grade school picture in September of 1978; Ann?s Grandma & Grandpa Townsend, circa late seventies; Keith, his friend Dave Harp, Ann, Deanna, and Grandma & Grandpa Townsend in approximately 1980 at the Indy Zoo; and Mom & Dad B with Uncle Kenny & Aunt Marilou with and unknown woman up in Wisconsin on vacation?I went up there with them one year; it was very quiet ? God?s country ? and I even got to fall asleep listening to Bob Euchre call Brewers? games on the radio.

Finally, we have Keith & Rosie at their wedding in LaPorte in February of ?93; a pair of pictures with Grandma & Grandpa Bryan and Matt & Joe in approximately October of 1996 in the dream home in Rossville; Mom & Joe in December of ?96 in that same home, upstairs in the kitchen; a pair of Robby in ?96 at his girlfriend?s house in Rossville and Rob and his buddies on graduation day in Three Springs, Alabama on December 18, 1997.

Well that?s it for this edition of the Scheu Family Blog.
