When You´re Walking out on the (Course)…and the Wind Catches your (Disc) & Sends (it) Flying, Crying…

We’ve had a great week, here at the Scheu abode. We stayed busy with work, got to spend time with our friends & family and did what we love doing. We enjoyed seeing all of our children together for the first time in a little while and for a short time, all was right in the world… Matt stayed busy up in Carmel, splitting time working at home and at his Indy office. He had his call-out meeting for the wresting team and despite not advertising or recruiting, still got 40+ kids to turn out. I assume workouts will start next week. He & Taylor came home this week and had a little drama before spending time with her parents this weekend. Abby had another busy week at work in Greenwood while staying with Will in Franklin. We enjoyed seeing them for a bit this week as well. They had fun getting dressed up for a couple different Halloween costume parties and looked great for both! Luke continued working odd jobs, taking his Fire 1 classes in Indy and spending as much time as he can working on his truck and hanging out with Samantha. We got to see them several times this week and are getting used to having them around. Ann had a fast week at work and enjoyed spending time with Amy. Although we didn’t get the Merry Band of Men together for card night, I did enjoy playing in my first two disc-golf tournaments this weekend. I played lousy, but still placed well in both. I did so-so with my diet but really blew it this weekend, enjoying ice cream cake for my 54th birthday. I killed my exercise goal with over 17 miles of walking as I played 15 rounds (actually playing 136 holes, which I think may be a new personal record)! Outside of my 50th celebration bash, I think this might have been the best birthday ever! Hello again and welcome to the latest edition of the Scheu Family Blog.

It was back to work on Monday morning. It was really nice out; in fact, I didn’t even warm up the van that morning before we commuted over to Columbus. Ann & I had long, typical Mondays. After a long day, I got out and played 18 holes of disc golf at the Columbus AirPark. It was really, really windy which made it quite challenging. However, my yellow Katana is finally getting broke in and I threw what I think is my longest drive when I threw my #5 tee shot 338’! The wind finally died down a little on my second round – ending with a 52 that day. I played additional 9 holes when we got back to Greensburg and had a great round at the park. I very nearly had an 18 but missed long birdie putts on 5 & 6, ending with a 20 – one off my PB. It was too dark to play a second round. Now that the leaves are really starting to come off the trees, the course is a little more open which allows clearer lines to shoot. They really need to trim the trees out there to give us golfers a break. That evening, we watched several DVR’d shows while I culled pictures and videos for this week’s blog until we went on to bed. I watched the 4th quarter of the Bears game at the end of the night and wound up winning the pick ‘em pool from poker. I had quite the successful night last Thursday, as it turned out…I think Will might be my good luck charm… Meanwhile, Luke had a busy day, getting under the house and cleaning out the fallen insulation that’s been under there for five decades. He filled the big trash can with the detritus. He took Sam out to dinner at Pizza King that evening and had her over for a while before going to the Y to workout.

Tuesday may have been the last really warm day of 2022. It was humid and in the mid-seventies as it rained on and off all day. We really need the rain and thankfully it didn’t interfere too much with my golf game. It was another busy day at work as I finished my monthly/quarterly reports, did some IT work, worked up a couple dozen POs, did the weekly video surveillance rounds and eventually began my monthly EOC rounds. The guys and I went to eat at Chick-fil-A, breaking my fast a few hours early. I need to do a better job next week. I was able to get in 18 holes of golf again, across the street on the airport property. The discs were really flying that day. The first 9 had zero wind and I was a little sweaty at the end of the round. As I started the 2nd 9, the wind began to pickup and by the end it was starting to pick up and blew in more rain. I only got rained on a few times that day, but nothing big. I thew a couple 25s to end the day at 50, including a 315’ drive on 9 and 314’ on 14. It was raining when we got back to town, so golf was out. Instead, we grabbed slushes at Sonic and stopped at Needlers to get stuff for Ann’s pitch-in lunch tomorrow. She made cheesy potatoes. I hope she brings some of those puppies home with her tomorrow night! She promised to make potato soup with the rest of the spuds this week, so that’ll suffice if nothing is left but the dirty dish for me to wash. LOL ???? We did more of the same that evening as I edited pictures while we watched more DVR’d shows. We have a ton of stuff recording right now. What did we do before we had a DVR?? Luke went to his Fire 1 class up north with Alex that evening and got back really late. It rained all evening and was slated to keep going until almost noon tomorrow. The burning bush is finally starting to turn, as is the other maple in the front yard. The one maple is nearly void of its leaves at this point – and all over our yard and drive. Luke needs to get out there and get them picked up before they all blow into Mr. Green’s lawn again… The best news of the day came with the flier we received in the mail form the Sand Pebble! We learned the days which will be Week 19 and are anxious to go already! We are thrilled to hear that the Welcome Party will make its return this year – the first since Covid shut everything down. The only bad part? No alcohol will be served…which really sucks since their rum punch was the bomb!! Unfortunately, the FC graduation will be during the 2nd weekend so if we want to attend Will’s big day then we’ll have to leave early… Here are random pictures from our recent adventures.

Wednesday was much colder. The rain was just starting to move out as we left for work that morning. Luke had an easy day, working out at the YMCA and having Sammi over that evening. Ann and the gals had a busy day but made time to celebrate the 50th birthday of one of their team members. The crew celebrated by surprising her by dressing in all black – LOL. I had a busy day, doing the first half of monthly EOC rounds. Vic & I managed to slip out for a quick lunch at Ye Olde Fish House. That day, lunch was on the house as I had a full punch ticket from buying 10 lunches. I like free food!! After work, I was able to get out and play 18 holes of disc golf. It was really windy and instead of the warm wind from the last couple days…this wind was bone-chilling. I really struggled in the wind but enjoyed the challenge. It was really hard but I managed to putt out a par (54). Ann & I spoke to Dad B & Lynn on the way home. They’ve made it down to northeastern Florida and are checking out their retirement home. It sounds like they’re having a great time! I dropped Annie off at home with the kids and went out to the park to play a quick 9 on the front tees. I called Dad & Barb and spoke with them while I played most of the round. They sound like they’re doing great and enjoying retirement as well. We can’t wait to see them real soon; I hate that we don’t see them more often than we do… I was pleased to see that Ann brought home a few leftover cheesy potatoes and you better believe I had a big helping of them with dinner that night. I was excited to see that a few new discs came in the mail for me that day. Two of them filled holes in my golf bag with a 3-speed approach disc called the Invader and a 10-speed distance driver called the Beast. The third was a treat for me – my first Kastaplast disc from Sweden. I went with the new Kaxe Z, which is a 6-speed midrange disc with a really nice plastic. I can’t wait to try it out on the course tomorrow! I also saw where the next shipment was sent from the Metallica vinyl club, which has cuts from the Bridge School benefit in 1997. I’m excited to know that it’s coming in the next week or so. We relaxed and watched several DVR’d shows that night, including a new Jerry Bruckheimer show called Fire Country and a few others.

It was pretty chilly on Thursday morning. I had to defrost the van before we could begin our commute back to work that morning. I finished up my EOC rounds that day, learned some Lean Six Sigma from Jim and then Vic took me out to dinner for my birthday. We wound up at Riviera Maya and hurried back to run a fire drill. However, due to high drama by a pair of residents, we wound up postponing it until Monday and eventually law enforcement got involved. After work, I played outside on a lovely day. I didn’t even wear a sweatshirt on the golf course, despite the rather blustery conditions. The wind was strong enough to mess with my game again. It eventually died down a bit toward the end of the 18 holes. When it was all said and done, I wound up with a 53 and a sore throwing shoulder. I think I threw a little too hard, earlier in the week, trying to go after those 300’ tosses. I did get a chance to use that new Invader disc quite a bit and threw that Kaxe a few times as well. I really like it, but it’ll take a few weeks to get it broken in properly. Advil and Tylenol were my buddies that night. Everyone was busy that evening, so Poker Night got cancelled – which is a shame because the football game was actually really good. The Ravens & Bucs went down to the last minute but eventually Brady went down (oh, too bad…) – being dealt his first three-straight loss streak since his rookie season. Ann and I went to Walmart when we got back home that evening and spent about an hour in there, though it honestly felt even longer than that… After we got stuff put away, we watched a couple shows on the DVR and promptly fell asleep. I had a little Jack & Coke, thanks to my buddies Dennis & Lenny at work – who hooked me up with a nice gift basket that included the whiskey, spicy nuts (in honor of playing Justin this week in fantasy football – his team’s name is just that – The Spicy Nuts!), candy and a scratch-off ticket (which hit for $5 – LOL!). I got in another disc for my birthday that evening – but I’m not opening it until tomorrow and don’t plan to use it for the tourney this weekend because I need a little time to break it in first. It’s my first Prodigy disc and I’m excited to start using it next week because I’ve heard so much about them… Luke did some work at that old house again, out in Westport – cleaning and doing some stuff outdoors. He attended his Fire 1 class with Alex again that night and got home late. He watched the end of the football game with me before heading on to bed. He has a busy day with an early start tomorrow. I did too, but I was a little wired from eating too much candy – lol. Just before I went to bed, I received a call from Mom O – the annual call she makes to all her family on their bdays – a lovely rendition of the Birthday Song that we all treasure. I was surprised to hear her up after midnight…Sandy, sure…but Maryann? Anyhow, it was the perfect night cap, so I wrapped up what I was doing and headed off to bed, where my bedwarmer was already set at 6 and waiting on me… We have lots of social media pictures to share this week.

We were up early again on Friday. I took the day off from work but still had to run Annie to her downtown office. We did leave early enough to get breakfast at Dunkin beforehand. I ran a couple errands in town then went to go play some disc golf in Batesville. I wanted to have a dry run through at the same time in the morning as the tourney will be to see if there are any tips I can pickup on. I’m glad I did, though I really sucked; I won’t lie. If I play like that tomorrow, I won’t win anything but the booby prize. ? Although I had some decent tee and approach shots, my putting was atrocious. I played the Liberty Park course first. I was delighted to see that they poured concrete pads at all the tees, which was really nice. And, although I didn’t see it at first, they redesigned 8 and 9. I was all the way to the hole for what I thought was 8 when I realized it said 9 on it. I looked back and saw that 8 was about 100’ shorter and that they created a new tee for 9. I only managed to shoot a 3-under (24), which is high for my average on that course. I spoke to one of the grounds crew guys so that I knew where I was going in the morning. I drover over to Liberty Woods and played the back 9. I really like that course. I’ve only played it a handful of times, but I like it more and more every time I play it. I again had chances to hit some birdies and blew a few of them, ending with yet another 24. A 24 on that course is decent for me, actually. I think it might be the best score for 18, ending with 48. However, I will need to make my putts tomorrow if I want to be competitive. Honestly, I don’t care if I win; I just want to have a good showing and enjoy it being my first time. I stopped at Batesville Liquors and enjoyed about a half hour in there, perusing all their goodies. They have SO much stuff in there. I wound up getting a couple bottles of wine for Christmas (or Thanksgiving?), another bottle of Salted Carmel Crown and a few cigars. I picked up Ann when I got back to town and we came on home. I had to take a detour through the country both ways because 46 is closed outside of New Point. Ann started cooking while I grabbed something go eat and watched the NASCAR races at Homestead from last week. We both fell asleep later, while watching the weekly Law & Order trilogy. Afterward, I went out to the park and played a round of golf form the front tees. I enjoyed the exercise but I played like doo-doo, managing only one-under par (26). Meanwhile, Luke got up and went to work with Chad then spent the afternoon working on his truck, installing a new set of fog lights. He had Samantha over that evening while Ann began cooking dinner. She had the whole family over that night to celebrate me surviving another lap around the sun. While Ann was busy inside, she sent me out back to grill the burgers and dogs. First Abby & Will joined us then Dee, Jamie & Grace, followed by Mom, Sandy, Pixie & Olive, with Matt & Taylor bringing up the rear. We had a total FEAST! I couldn’t even get everything on my plate the first time through the line. Her corn dip and jalapeno dip were both good but that baked mac & cheese was the bomb! ???? Afterward, we had ice cream cake and the whole gang sang to me in a hauntingly scary rendition of the birthday song. It was poor Samantha’s first time experiencing that and I think it might’ve scared her just a little bit – LOL. I opened presents a little later on and thought I was done after scoring some booze and Hot Wheels but then Abby came in, carrying a huge box…and I knew instantly that my Xmas present came early! Ann managed to find me a Zuca disc golf caddy. It’s a pull behind golf kart so I don’t have to lug around that heavy bag of discs on the course! I was super excited but tried to play it cool. We took a bunch of pictures and said our goodbyes. Folks weren’t gone long when we got a call from Matt & Taylor. Matt’s car died suddenly on his way out of town. Thankfully, they were just over by the park, just a few hundred feet from the disc golf course, in fact. The way Matt explained things to me, it sounded a lot like he ran it out of gas. So, we piled in the Barneymobile and came back to get the gas cans out of the shed. Easy, peasy…right? The bad thing was when I tried to put the gas in, it just went straight on to the ground. We went back to get a funnel from the house when Luke & Sam showed up at the car to try and help. About that time, a police officer pulled in behind all of us and was very kind in helping us to get the gas in the tank. She said that it likely a siphon guard – a fancy option on newer vehicles. See, I wouldn’t know that since all of our cars are old enough to vote! LOL! ???? Eventually, Matt got the funnel to work and we quickly filled the tank…but that was after a 30-minute ordeal. It put the kids way behind on their schedule, but thankfully that’s all it was. After Matt pulled away, I started to go but Luke flagged me down and said Sammi’s car wouldn’t start. Turns out, they left the lights on for me to see but shut the car off to save gas. Now IT wouldn’t start. …You can’t make this stuff up, man. LMAO! So, I spun old Barney around, whipped out the jumper cables and got them running as well. They headed up to Greenwood for more Crumbl cookies and I headed back home. Ann had gotten everything cleaned up by the time I got back and I started assembling my Zuca cart. It is really nice and I can’t wait to use it. I don’t think it would be good in Batesville – due to the wooded portion of the course, but I think I’ll probably use it in Columbus on Sunday! We picked up the rest of the house, put on our comfy clothes and sat down with the dogs to watch a couple shows. I watched an inning of the World Series and then turned-on SWAT. You can guess what happened next…yep; we both fell asleep. ???? I told the kids, it felt good to feel needed again, like I used to feel when they were little and quipped that I earned my “Dad Card??? that evening!

We slept in a little bit on Saturday, but certainly not as late as we wanted – that’s for sure. Truth be told – I was up before the alarm even went off, excited about my first disc golf tournament. I got over to Batesville a little earlier than I anticipated, got my discs (gift bag) and registered. I competed in the 50+ category. After a players meeting, we were assigned a hole, met our co-players and went began with a shotgun start. We started on hole 4. Right away, I knew I was in trouble with my throws not going where they were supposed to. Although my tee shots improved over the course of the round, my putting was atrocious. I missed 8 or 9 VERY makable putts that I simply blew. If I had hit even half of them, I would’ve easily taken first place. As it was, I tied for 2nd place with two other guys. They had us to go to hole 3 and begin a playoff for the runner-up trophy. I went 3rd and although I had good distance, I missed the hole, wide-right by about 20’. While the others parred the hole, I nailed my second throw and rang the chains – somehow managing to FINALLY hit a damn birdie (only my 4th of the day) when it counted and secured the runner-up position! I won a door prize (a t-shirt) but it was way too small and gave it to one of the kids that played in the tourney that day. I got changed and drove to Lil’ Charlies for lunch. I ordered a tall draft beer (some salt & lime ale) and an order of their delicious seafood dip. I was totally bummed when the waitress returned empty-handed and said they were out. Instead, I had another beer and decided to do a little shopping. I picked up a bottle of Indiana-made rhubarb liqueur at Batesville Liquors and a handful Hot Wheels from Kroger before leaving town. I picked up lunch at Taco Bell when I got back to the ‘Burg and settled down to watch some TV shows I’ve had on the DVR for a while like Dr. Who (the last with Jodie Whitaker as the Doctor), The Walking Dead, and … Ann left the house shortly after I did that morning, also going over to Batesville. She & Amy did some shopping and experienced new eateries there and in Columbus, coming home with little treasures. Samantha, who apparently stayed the night with us, and Luke went to Shelbyville to eat lunch at Cracker Barrel and then also went over to Batesville to visit her grandparents. That night, Ann & I caught up on each other’s day and then turned-on Paramount + to watch a couple episodes of SEAL Team. Here are pictures of recent additions to my Hot Wheels collection.

I was up early again on Sunday morning for my second disc golf tournament of this weekend. That morning, I headed over to Columbus, to the center of town at Donner Park. The Columbus DG Club was hosting a fund-raising tournament to get funds to build a permanent golf course there, complete with two sets of concrete pads and a basket at 9 holes (creating 18 total like Greensburg). They had a great turnout with about 80 participants that day. I signed up for an early tee time – 9:40, so that I could get my round in before the rain hit. As it turned out, it only spit a few drops on us for a couple seconds and that was it. It didn’t start raining until a few minutes after I left the park. I did my round with a group of guys that were really cool. I really enjoyed my time out on the course that day, though I didn’t play well again. I two-putted on ten holes. If I had even hit half of them, I would’ve again won my age bracket. As it was, I threw a 60, which is 2-over par. I followed the final round on U-Disc. My buddy Jonathon (who designed this course as well as the AirPark course that I play daily after work) was playing the final round with the last guy in my division. The two of them not only facilitated the tourney but are also the leaders in the local disc golf club. We were neck and neck the whole time. In the end, I would finish second by one stroke again! Dammit!! On hole 14, I put in a flag for the CTP (closest to pin) award, as I had a really nice drive that landed about 6’ from the basket. However, as was typical this weekend, I would end up two-putting it. ? I missed three “gimme??? putts – one I got mad and flicked it at the basket a little hard/cockily…and promptly missing it again (3-putting the hole). I was so embarrassed… I used my new Zuca cart and absolutely loved it. Now, I need to figure out what sort of modifications I wanna make to hold the things I need for my day-to-day games. There are lots of add-ons you can buy plus there are different modifications folks have made that I may want for mine as well. Thanks to Luke for finishing up the assembly of it. I had trouble getting part of it together. I said my goodbyes to my new and old friends and made my way back…but not before checking out all the discs that a vendor had set up at a booth next to the registration booth. They were cool but nothing that really jumped out at me that I HAD to have. I did get a cool disc as part of my player package, along with a sticker, a rosin bag and a few gift cards from local vendors – very nice. I met Luke at J&A Auto when I got back to town as Dr. Jerry was performing surgery on the F-1-Shitty tomorrow. When we got back home, Luke & Sam left and went to her house to have dinner and spend time with her family. Ann & I watched football and I was amazed that my team FINALLY came alive and scored me over 160 points (as of this writing) with two guys still playing and my defense yet to play later! The best part of it??? I played Justin this week and whipped his ass!! ???? Ann made spicy, cheesy Fireworks popcorn for dinner that night. I spoke to Dad & Lynn on the phone, trying to help them get signed into their new Apple TV but had to pass them on to Abby since I have zero experience with Apple products. Later, I talked to Jonathan and he’s gonna hook me up with a membership in the Columbus league which I’m looking forward to… After the Cowboys won and the Colts lost, we watched several more episodes of SEAL Team to get caught up and then called it a night. It was a relaxing way to wind down a busy weekend, here at the ol’ Scheu abode and a great way wrap up another long week…
