Made up My Mind…Make a New Start…

We are so proud of our little Bu. As always, Abby has been excelling at school. This week she was recognized for making the straight-A honor roll. Abby & Emma (Phyllis & Dick’s granddaughter) had helped so much with Student Council that their staff rep (Ms. Minturn) treated the two girls to a movie after school, which was very sweet. Abby also volunteered at a food pantry or something that helped needy children in the community. She is a very special little lady and we very, very proud of her. This week also saw the demise of an American institution – Hostess. My favorites were the Twinkie, Ding-Dong and the Cupcake. I still have a few Hostess baseball cards that used to come on the bottom of the boxes in the 70s.
It had rained overnight on Sunday and in to Monday morning and continued on until around noon when we actually saw our first snowfall! Abby returned the shake table that has been in residence on and off in our house for about a decade now. In fact, I think I had to re-make part of it a couple years ago. Abby just needs to do her board now that she and Luke completed her science experiment. It didn’t last long, but it was cool just the same. Matt had his 2nd wrestling practice and jumped right back in full-tilt this week. Abby had dance team practice that afternoon and it was nice that we could eat dinner as a family at a regular time!

It was even colder on Tuesday and we had to let the cars warm-up for a while to defrost and still had to scrape. It was the second day for my corporate EOC guy’s visit. It went very well and I have only a handful items on my plan of corrections. He was very complimentary of the facility but I was quick to point out that I had very little to do with the appearance but that I would pass it along to the folks that work for me. Abby missed open gym for basketball (essentially a non-mandatory work out). Instead, she went to Luke’s basketball practice. We had a parents meeting after Matt’s wrestling practice. We talked with Coach Cochran, regarding Matt’s shoulder and expectations. Ann & I recommended he sit out the first tourney, which is this weekend, since he will not be at 220 and will have to go heavyweight. Coach felt he would be fine, but Ann & I remember just how big those boys are. Come to find out, Matt has not been wrapping his shoulder for practices – not for wrestling and not for several weeks at football. In addition, he has not been icing his shoulder each night as he supposed to either…but when you try to talk to him, he gets upset and argues since he knows everything. I’m so stupid right now but if he’s anything like me, I should get smarter in about 5 years or so… We basically left it up to Matt to decide if he wants to wrestle or not. He has mixed feelings. He is competitor but doesn’t want to screw it up for a non-220 match. We agreed with Coach that we all know Matt well enough and if it is left up to him, he will wrestle. He is a such a gamer. Lots of new pictures on Facebook this week, including Lindsay and Jack; Aunt Dorothy; Emmitt; Steph & Emmitt; Nick, Ryan & Haley; and Abby.

Wednesday was another scraper morning. Abby had dance team practice. Matt had wrestling practice where he decided to go heavyweight and challenge for the spot at the varsity invitational in Rushville this weekend – his first competition of the year already. He ended up winning the position by beating his friend, Nathan, who will be our regular heavyweight entry once Matt gets back down to 220. …I just hope that he doesn’t get hurt this weekend…
Luke had basketball practice on Thursday night where he also received his uniform. They turned out very nice. We had to buy these from Gameplan and they look very similar to the varsity’s uniform. Matt pulled a muscle at wrestling and hobbled around the house but he should be fine. Abby went to the junior high boy’s basketball game and then on to dance class over at Dixon Studio. With Luke’s tablet not working correctly, he has taken to drawing incessantly which I absolutely love. In fact, I think he may even ask Santa for an art kit of some sort…

On Friday, Matt had wrestling and met up with us back at the house where we had a birthday party for Mom O! MaryAnn, Sandy, Dee, Jamie & Grace all came over to celebrate her 72nd birthday (at least that what she said…but I believe she has forgotten two years somehow!). Ann made Mom’s favorite – spaghetti. After dinner we sang her the Birthday Song (death-march style), had cheese cake and dirt pudding, gave her presents and then we all watched her favorite movie on the big screen – The Polar Express.

We were up early on Saturday morning. Abby had dance team practice and then spent a couple hours decorating ornaments for a fund raiser. Meanwhile, Matt had his first wrestling activity of the year already. Ann, Luke & I met up with him at the annual Rushville Invitational tourney. Luke missed his basketball practice at the Y today because of it. Matt wasn’t allowed to even try to make 220, so he went heavyweight. These were big guys he faced. Up first, we went against Franklin County and as a team we won 46-40. As for Matt, he was paired with a much larger opponent and the 1st period was spent basically going strength on strength. Matt ended up giving up a takedown and the initial period ended 2-0. Early in the 2nd period, there was a scramble and Matt (ever the nimble puma) ended up on top and started to get him turned and that’s all it took. He eventually got him on his back and like usual, once Matt gets you on your back; you rarely get off of it. This was no different and he pinned the larger opponent. It was a big relief for Ann & I. We were so worried he would injure his shoulder going with these big goons. It was a good victory for his confidence. After a 2nd round bye, the team faced off against the inferior Oldenburg team in the 3rd round. Honestly, I’m not sure why they even have a program. They only brought 4 boys to the meet. Matt did not have an opponent and received a forfeit to go to 2-0 on the day. In the 4th round, the team faced off with Westfield. The Clovers would end up being the Invitational champs and did away with our boys quickly, winning 58-16. Matt wrestled a heavyweight that was at about 50 pounds heavier. It didn’t take long before Matt found himself on his back and was quickly pinned. We can’t wait until he gets down to his normal 220. In the final matchup, the Pirates faced the Rushville Lions. Matt faced a heavyweight guy that made it to the 2nd round of semi-state. Again, this guy was also at least 50 pounds heavier than Matt. He lasted a little longer than the last match, but had the same ending. He tried his patented move but when it came up short, he made the fatal mistake of reaching back with his other arm and the guy used it to turn him. He has got to stop reaching back. Anyhow, once turned, the dude was way too heavy and Matt was pinned. We lost to Rushville to end the day with a 2-2 record, finishing 3rd of the five teams. Matt went out to eat afterwards with a few of his teammates while we grabbed Chinese take out and came home to eat and take naps. We got up and did a few weekly chores around the house and caught up on our DVR programs. Matt ended up napping for a couple hours and then went over to Joel’s house to spend the night.

We actually got to sleep in on Sunday morning. At lunchtime, we headed to the small town of Liberty to play at Union County High School as Luke participated in his first basketball action of the year. He is on a travel team this year with seven of his good buddies. They faced off first against Blue River. Luke played forward and guard. He looked unsure of himself and will need a lot more practice to get him back up to speed. He had a great foul that would’ve looked good in his football game a couple weeks ago! Unfortunately, this one landed him back on the bench. He is on a great little team and they won easily 30-18, thanks in part to his friend Grayson who had an outstanding game. In their second game, they faced Morristown Gold. It was more of the same. Luke got rebounds, steals and set a few nice picks. He needs to work on dribbling and passing. He was 0-1 from the field but his team was again up to the challenge and really clicking. They put a hurting on them, 36-8 – thanks in part to the play of his buddy Brendan who had an awesome game. Afterwards we went out to eat at El Reparo (actually, the GPS called it ‘El Retardo’ LOL!). By the time we finally got home, I was wiped out and fell asleep during the 1st quarter. I apparently missed a call from Rob who was busy making Thanksgiving treats with Sharon & Dad…who had been indulging in some cocktails. Sorry I missed that conversation! :0) In the final NASCAR race of the season, Gordon finally pulled out a victory at Homestead…racing Bowyer for the win in the final laps – no doubt a sweet victory for him! Dallas pulled out a hard-fought victory in OT after a really shitty horse-collar penalty that set up a touchdown (he pulled his long hair – not his shoulder pads!). Wouldn’t you know it, CBS cut away from the end of the Cowboys game to see the start of the damn Colts game…UGH!! I already knew the outcome, but I wanted to see it just the same – stupid NFL. The Colts got absolutely routed – losing by about 50 points to the Patriots. But, the Boilers pulled one out this week and now just needs to win the Old Oaken Bucket game next week to become bowl-eligible…Boiler Up!

Next up we have our video section, including a couple of family videos and several from around the ‘net this week.

We have an entry for our Shit that Luke Says section, thanks to Abby. I had forgotten that when we were on our way to Liberty today, we were talking about city names. Out of nowhere he says, “That’s why they call our town Greensburg – because of all the grass!” 😉

Next up is our Waybac section. We again feature the photos of Gil Hutton, photographer in Lafayette and uncle to Cathy and David. Leading off this week, we have several from Aunt Sue’s wedding in 1961 which includes classic photos of Sue & Hank, Granny & Grandpa Scheu and Aunts Sally & Mary. We follow those up with birth shots of Cathy with her momma, Aunt Judy in late ’63. And then we have several of Cathy throughout 1964.

Next up with have David in the middle and end of 1965 as well as Cathy in December of ’65. Next is what I believe is John’s senior picture in the fall of ’67 followed by a picture of Aunt June at their wedding at the end of ’68. And finally we have more pictures of the session with Cathy & David in June of 1970.

That wraps up this week’s edition of the Scheu Family Blog. Thanks for keeping up with us this time out and we’ll catch up with you next time. Until then, have a good one. We miss ya, Mom.
Later, Scheu
