We had another interesting week at the Scheu abode. Last Sunday, Ann completed several pages at Archiver’s in Indy with Amy as the kids and I stayed home to watch a great Super Bowl. From the food to the halftime show to the ending of the game itself, this had to be one of the best Super Bowls in recent memory. We absolutely pigged out the entire time and Matt & I were excited to watch it in high definition this year again…and with Ann out of the picture, we cranked up the stereo – especially at half time! I have to admit that I am not a huge Boss fan, but the kids and I really had fun complying with Bruce’s request to, “Turn your TV’s all the way up!??? J
On Monday, the boys from Stacy’s Plumbing finally got busy fixing our water main, as the water company finally got out and marked the lines – a full week after the initial request! We came home on Monday to find our neighbor’s Rose of Sharon bush uprooted and hauled away…and a giant backhoe in our side yard! On Tuesday morning, it was -11° on the way to work, but got warmer and warmer from that point throughout the rest of the week, peaking at 54 on Saturday. By Sunday, 95% of all our snow was gone, leaving behind a soupy, muddy mess with flood warnings for this entire region of the state. To their credit, the boys came out in very harsh conditions on that cold Tuesday morning and got us back up and running appropriately. Due to the severe cold and the heavy saturation of the soil, they were unable to do much more than simply backfill the trench. They will be back out in the spring to finish up the work. So for now, it looks awful…
Matt was supposed to have his first wrestling meet on Tuesday, but it was again cancelled due to the severe weather. Wednesday proved to be particularly nasty, as they cancelled classes in Greensburg & Columbus again; officially pushing the school year in to June now! L Abby enjoyed going to Grandma and Gigi’s house (and Matt enjoyed her going as well, as he got to stay home alone!). J I took the kids out to the park on both Wednesday & Thursday nights for twilight sledding. We had a blast getting in what could prove to be the last sledding days for a while now. Early in the week we also received a call from Grandmaw & Grandpaw Bryan, regarding Uncle Robby. His past seems to have caught with him and he has to face the music, so to speak. We love and support him very much and wish him strength as he tries to straighten out his life once and for all.
Friday night, we got take out from Koch’s and watched a movie for family night. Matt took off for the varsity basketball game with his buddies after dinner. He had to be in early though, as he had his first wrestling meet (finally!) early on Saturday. Matt and the Pirates were invited to Triton Central in Fairland (out in the boonies between Shelbyville and Greenwood) for a six-team, round robin format dubbed the Super Six Tourney. Matt, however, would only see action in the first team-to-team match-up. That’s because he injured his ankle during his very first match – ever! Matt was doing quite well early on… His age group uses a 2-1-1 (minute) time frame for rounds. During the first round, with Matt leading 3-0, the clock was winding down at the end of the period, with Matt positioned towards the time clock. He could see and hear the clock go off and so he let up while still tied up with his opponent. However, the wrestler from Center Grove kept going and attempted to take Matt down after the buzzer had already sounded. However, with three simultaneous matches occurring, it was very loud and difficult to hear; so the referee didn’t step in to stop the action. With Matt letting his guard down for that brief second, he was caught off-guard by the shot and both boys rolled over Matt’s left ankle in a nasty mix up that also saw him get busted in the jaw as well. As the period was now over, Matt hobbled over to talk with coach and get the bleeding in his mouth stopped, but you could tell he was definitely hurt. To his credit, he toughed it out for the final periods to complete the match – making his old man very proud of him. However, on only one good leg, he was no match for his opponent and ended up getting beaten 4-3. His toughness wasn’t only noticed by Mom & Dad, but by the coaching staff & his teammates as well, as they rallied around him and gave him encouragement. However, he was done for the day and is already out indefinitely at this point. He is on crutches and is icing his ankle every 20 minutes. The next day, it didn’t get any better so Ann took him to see the doctor and get x-rays. We won’t have the results until Monday, so for now we hope it’s just a bad sprain and no ligament damage… By the time he got back home from the wrestling meet (around five or so), he was really worn out and fell asleep very quickly on the couch shortly after dinner – missing out on going over to see Mallory at Christy & Terry’s house (to celebrate Heather’s16th birthday). I kept an eye on him as all the others went over. They ended up staying over there for a few hours. In fact, Abby had such a good time, she didn’t come home! J She went home with one of her best friends, Megan. She finally returned home around lunchtime on Sunday and then we ended up having one of Luke’s best friends (Alex) over Sunday afternoon for the dreaded “play date.” The two of them were very cute and played well togetherm, but poor Lukey was in tears when Alex had to go home… L
So that was our week, now let’s move on to this week’s installment of the Way Back feature. As promised in an earlier post, I found larger pictures of the tiny ones posted last month. Along with those, I also found a few others…
First off is a picture of Matt’s YMCA T-ball team in July of 2001.
The next one is from later in the year, again a YMCA-league team. This time, Matt is with his soccer team from October of 2001.
Here is an old favorite of mine – taken in our backyard – from July 4th of 2002.
Here’s Bu in our current living room on Christmas Day, 2002.
The next one was taken at Granny’s house on 9th St., two days after Christmas, 2002.
Here we are on New Year’s Eve, 2002.
Next is Matthew’s birthday party in March, 2003. We had a magician perform for our family and the neighborhood kids in our living room.
More Bu; this time it’s a picture from a month later at Easter in April 2003.
Here’s Matt’s spring soccer team in May of ’03.
Here’s Abby with Papa Scheu in June of ’03 at Chris & Trisha’s wedding.
Here are two pictures of Abigail at Grandmaw & Grandpaw Bryan’s house in Rossville in July ’07.
Next up are the kiddos with Aunt Norma (Morgan) Spoor at a family reunion at a small country church outside of Lafayette in August of 2003.
Here are four pictures of the first and week of school in late August of 2003. The first one is of Matt & Mallory, along with Christy’s girls. The second is of Abby & Megan. Both of those were taken out in the front yard of Christy & Terry’s house. The last two were taken in our living room, here on Russell Dr.
Here is Bu in late October, 2003 in Grandma and Gigi’s home on Main St.
The next two pictures are from Thanxmas 2003 in our living room.
These two are from Christmas Eve, 2003 in our living room.
The last one today is from July 2004, after finishing the post-season tourney. Matt’s team was the Devil Rays. We had a blast that summer…
Additional note:
Well, now it is Monday night and today we heard back from Matt’s doctor. After reading the x-ray, it was discovered that Matt has a stress fracture. Although there was no surgery and no plaster cast, he is in a giant boot for at least two weeks and possibly up to six weeks. He is able to walk on it now, so the crutches are gone but he still has to take it real easy for the next couple weeks…so no wrestling until further notice! Thanks as always for keeping up with the Scheu’s and we’ll catch up with you next time.
