I don’t Know why You Say Goodbye…

We’ve had an exhausting week, here at the Scheu abode. We’ve experienced a ton of precipitation, causing areal flooding. On top of all the damn rain, it was hot and humid most of the week. That kept us inside in the evenings and allowed us to watch the US win tons of gold medals at the Olympics in Rio. I think we’re all passing around a summer cold. Thankfully, the weather didn’t impede us too much with our outdoor activities. Luke was involved in three sports this week. Abby was also involved in three sports – plus extracurricular school activities, work and still somehow found time for a social life. But despite all that, it was Matt’s big week. He wrapped up his full time work and will now move to PRN every other weekend or so and will again become a full time student at U Indy. Talk about mixed feelings – we are so proud of our young man and know he will do very well this year. Yet, as we said our goodbyes and watched him walk to his apartment as we pulled away from school, it was still heart-wrenching. This was the third time for us and it honestly hasn’t gotten any easier… Hello again and welcome to the latest installment of the Scheu Family Blog.
We woke up to a very wet Monday morning. It stormed on and off all day. Abby had Student Council before school, soccer after it, then went out with Emma for Student Council & the soccer dinner. Luke had football practice then had Oakley over to play for a while. Matt worked then played Xbox all night. Ann had another long day at work. I walked 3 miles after work in the rain (mostly sprinkles, thankfully). We were saddened by the recent celebrity deaths of actor Kenny Baker (R2-D2) and sports journalist John Saunders (ESPN / Sports Reporters).

Tuesday was another rainy day. Luke had his second football game of the season at Franklin County in Brookville. I hitched a ride with Bryan again. They had a few sprinkles but nothing major, thankfully. Luke was again a tri-captain, representing the team at the coin-flip before the game. We are very proud of him for achieving this status. He played fullback, outside linebacker and kicker again. The Pirates defense played pretty good – good enough to win. They gave up a pair of long runs of over 35 yards for TDs but otherwise held them pretty well in check. The offense showed flashes of greatness but couldn’t string together any plays of significance. Penalties also plagued them as they couldn’t move the ball much on a wet, sloppy field. It really took away our speed game. Luke only had three rushes for 10 yards and a first down. Given the field conditions, I was surprised they didn’t utilize him more. Defensively he had 4 tackles and 1 hurried throw. On special teams he had one onside kick (left-footed, no less!) for 23 yards. The 7th grade Pirates suffered their first loss, 0-12 to even their record, 1-1. Abby missed Pirateers practice to attend her soccer game at Rising Sun. I hate it when we have schedule conflicts and not being able to support her. Ann & I had to divide and conquer. So she went to support her but unfortunately she saw no playing time as the Pirates lost a tough match to start the season, 0-1. Matt had a good day at work then went over to his buddy’s house.

Wednesday was much cooler and we actually saw the sun that day, after a little rain of course! I walked about three miles after work. Luke had football practice. Abby had soccer practice then she and Ann went to jazz class. She had another soccer dinner and Matt had a good day at the old folks’ home – he loves it out there and they must like him too as he had a goodie basket from his coworkers with both gag gifts as well as some very nice going-away gifts as well.
Thursday was another hot/humid day. Luke had football practice. Abby again missed Pirateers as well as her tap class at Dixon for another soccer game. This time she played against a very good South Dearborn team. It was their first home game and Abby saw her first playing time – only about 5 minutes, but it was a start. The girls were out-matched and lost 0-8 to lower their record to 0-2. Afterwards, Abby played in the JV game which was pretty much more of the same. She played most of this game as a mid-fielder and was in the whole time, except for only a quick break. Unfortunately they also lost, 0-6. Matt enjoyed a day off from work to get his stuff all packed up and ready to go. I was glad to see him come to the game to support Abby and I know it meant a lot to her as well. After the game, Bu had a dinner date for the first time in a while.

I had Friday off due to our low census at work (normal for this time of year). Luke had football practice after school. Abby had soccer practice after school and then we allowed her to drive to Shelbyville for the football game that night. It was the first time we allowed her to drive to an away game. Matt worked for the last time at Aspen Place before he heads off to school. He has agreed to stay on PRN and work when he can. His plan is to come home every other weekend and work out there. That evening, Ann & I went out to Bryan & Angie’s house (unofficially, the Sunken Boat Bar) to meet up with two other couples for a fun night of the “Oldie -Wed” game (think Newly-Wed game for couples married for a decade or two!). Ann & I came close, but ended up in 2nd place. We laughed so hard that I hurt the next day! We haven’t had that much fun in a long while. I hope we can do that again on a more regular basis. And we have new social media pictures to share this week: Abby and friends; old-school Zep collection; recent celebrity deaths – John Saunders and Kenny Baker; and Metallica streamed Minneapolis show this weekend.

We were up early on Saturday morning. Luke had football practice then Gma & Dee dropped him off at the Pirate Pitch. Matt, Ann & I were there to root on Abby and the varsity Lady Pirate soccer team as they faced Union County. Abby did not get in the game again, unfortunately. The Pirates came out flat and got down 0-2 but the second half belonged to them as they came storming back and won 3-2 for their first win and a 1-2 record on the year. It rained most of the game, causing us to break-out the umbrellas and sending the boys scrambling to the car. Afterwards, Luke went with the Hellmich’s to King’s Island for the day and stayed the night with them. Abby had to stay after the game and help at the boys game and then went to work until late. Meanwhile, Ann & I helped Matt move back to college for his junior year. It rained on us and really cut loose a couple times with some nasty storms, just as it has in previous years. He was lucky enough to get an apartment in the Greyhound Village building that opened new this year on campus. He and his three roommates have their own rooms in their 4-bedroom apartment. We got everything up in just a couple trips but it is a long walk to his “penthouse,” as he calls it. :0) It is very nice and a far cry from what Ann & I had during our undergrad days at FC. Once we got him moved in, we took him out for a late lunch at our favorite spot whenever we are up there with him – Five Guys. Yum! We took him shopping and got him all set up in his room. Time flew all-too quickly and before we knew it, it was time for us to say our tearful goodbyes and let him finish getting unpacked. Although it was sad, we know we’ll see him real soon… We came back to a quiet, empty home. Ann read and took a nap while I spent the night finishing up scanning the next series of photo albums for our Waybac section. This time, we have books 7-12 of our young family, which documents the end of 1999 through the first quarter of 2001. There are so many priceless pictures – I can’t wait to share them here. I was so focused on finishing them up that I forgot all about the live stream of the Metallica concert, dammit…speaking of which, the boys have a new album coming out in November. The first single is below and is the title-track of the new release, called, “Hardwired…to Self-Destruct.” In fact, Metallica is not the only one to have a new album out for Christmas this year as both Led Zeppelin and the Beatles will also have new releases as well. :0)

Sunday was another busy day. It was much cooler and we actually got the house opened up. We got up and got started on our weekly household chores before I picked up Luke at the Hellmichs and we went over to Gma & Gigi’s house to do some yard work. We came home and Luke mowed the yard while I did some stuff indoors and checked the fluids in the vehicles. We got cleaned up and Luke & I ran out to the ball diamonds for tryouts for the new Titans travel team. They have aligned with a local gym to offer a year-round program. It’s an interesting set-up. We’ll know in a couple weeks if he made the team and then we’ll have a few weeks to weigh our options and make a decision. After we took Drew home, we did some more work at home and Mom & Sandy visited with Pixie. They came bearing goodies from the annual Power of the Past event, out at the fair grounds. Thanks for my Hot Wheels and t-shirt, Gigi! Ann got some of the new Choc-Cola. Next, Luke was off again – this time to the junior high for basketball practice. I ran to the store for Ann and she made us a dinner, brought to us by the letter P – pork chops, potatoes & peas! Later, we finally got to sit down and relax for a little while, watching the Bristol races from this weekend as well as the UFC 202 fights and the 1st episode of season 2 of Fear the Walking Dead (and of course, Talking Dead). Abby had a long day as well as she got up and went in to work late in the morning and came home only for a few minutes before heading over to her co-captain’s (Mary) house to learn the dances she had missed this week at Pirateers due to soccer games. She didn’t get home until after dark when she immediately retired to her room to get started on her homework.

Our final section is our video segment which features three new home movies this week as well as several from around the internet.

And that does it for this week’s Scheu Family Blog entry. Thanks for keeping up with us this week and we’ll catch up with you again next time. Until then, have a good one. We miss ya Mom.
Later, Scheu
