We finally got some much-needed relief from the heat this week, thanks to the hurricanes down south. Dad B got a clean bill of health and was released to go home. Abby had some big news, being invited to apply for the National Honor Society – way to go, Bu! We were saddened by the news of the death of actor Gene Wilder. Ann & I had a short week, deciding to spend some quality time with family and friends on the Labor Day weekend, which to us means the end of summer. Matt had a scare up at campus. Abby battled health issues as she continued her hectic pace of juggling three sports, school activities, homework, work and her boyfriend. But it was Luke’s big week as he and his teammates won a big football game, including scoring his first points of his career. Hello again and welcome back to the Scheu Family Blog.
Luke had football practice after school on Monday and ended up losing my video card for the fourth straight time. I made him go buy me a new one. Abby had soccer practice then went to Pirateers before going on a date with Kirk later. I walked 2.5 miles on a very hot & humid day. Ann iced her knees as they were aching again that night. Here are pictures from last weekend when we went to Luke’s football game in Lawrenceburg and Abby’s soccer game at Batesville, vs. Oldenburg Academy.
Abby had Student Council before school so I ran Luke to the junior high on Tuesday. Ann had a long day at work and then went to Abby’s soccer game at South Ripley. She missed Pirateers to attend the game. Bu played about 25 minutes, so she is progressing…I just wish I could’ve been in two places at once. I am just thankful Ann & I can divide and conquer. I had a quick day at work and then headed to Shriver Field to tape the 7th and 8th grade football games for the coaching staff. This time Coach Harris and I decided to bypass Luke’s “help??? and had me just upload the videos that night. As for the game itself, the Pirates dominated, scoring quick and often in the 1st quarter vs. Rushville. The Pirates rolled to a big victory, 42-8! Their record now stands at 3-1. Bryan & Angie sat up by the press box with me while Gma sat down low. It’s a shame that Ann & Gigi missed it because Luke had a big game and made the paper. His ankle looked good. He said his new brace makes it feel great as well. Offensively he played halfback and fullback. He had some very nice blocks coming out of the backfield, including another sweet pancake. He only had one rush but made it count, going 35 yards and scoring his first TD for six points on the day! Way to go, buddy!! Defensively, the Pirates absolutely dominated. Luke had 4.5 tackles, including 1 for a loss. He forced a fumble and batted a ball down…but his big play on D was when he dropped back in pass coverage from his outside linebacker position, tipped the ball up and grabbed it out of the air, returning it 50 yards but coming up 7 short yards of his 2nd TD of the game! On special teams, he attempted one punt but due to a bad snap, he had to grab it and get down before he got killed. He also had 7 kickoffs with distances of 30, 28, 25, 42, 32, 42 and 33. The 8th grade game was more of the same as the Pirates had a big lead at halftime. During halftime, the refs saw lightning and delayed it 30 minutes. It was delayed 5 more times and they finally ended up calling the game early. I took Luke & Drew to BK afterwards to celebrate their big win. We saw Britney and Cody working there. Abby ended up going out with her teammates to ElRep for a victory dinner after they won 2-0 to bring their record to 2-4. It stormed pretty hard overnight. Luke sort of made the paper for his big game – Matt actually got the credit for his TD though!
Abby woke up with a sick, nasty headache again on Wednesday morning. She ended up sleeping in a couple hours then got up, toughed it out and went to school. Afterward she attended soccer practice, taught at the dance studio, had a jazz class and then stayed late to go over the Pirateers dance that she and several girls missed to due to school activities last night. Meanwhile Luke had football practice and ended up finding my video card. It stormed on and off a few times, with unstable air coming up from the south where all the hurricanes are right now. I think Ann said there were three of them at one time. It cleared up by the time work ended. It was a long day for me as I completed all my monthly stuff like rounds, testing and a fire drill. It was cool enough to open up the house that night. It would stay open the rest of the week. The only problem is that you can really hear the locusts and crickets and the dogs can hear the neighborhood cat, prowling outside. Then they wanna go out and play and wake us up throughout the night. That shit has to stop. Here are this week’s random pictures.
It was much noticeably cooler on Thursday. In fact, it was almost cold heading in to work. It was awesome walking a couple miles after work with it being so much nicer out. Luke got hurt at football practice, taking a facemask to his elbow. It swelled a little but he’s still made of rubber and was fine by the time he went to bed. Abby was up and in early for Pirateers before school. She had another soccer game vs. Madison that night. The JV won for the first time this year, 2-0, raising their record to 1-2. Abby played most of the game and got her first assist of her career. She only came out once in the 2nd half for about 10 minutes. After a short break, she warmed up with the varsity team. They would also win, jumping out to a 3-0 lead at the half and holding on to win 3-2, bringing their record to 3-4 on the year. She only played about 10 minutes in the first half and did not go back in. Ann worked in the concession stand with the coach’s wife. It was definitely sweatshirt weather when the sun went down. On our way home from work earlier that afternoon, we received a series of emergency texts from U Indy. They stated there was a credible bomb threat in one of the dorms, and told all the kids to evacuate campus. Obviously we were very concerned and called Matt right away. He was already evacuating with the rest of the student body and was fine. After about an hour or so, they were able to call an all-clear and allowed the kids to return though all classes were cancelled for the night. After the game, Ann went out for Girls’ Night Out. Abby went out with Kirk after the game. Luke & I went to Taco Bell for dinner and came home to watch the Colts / Bengals game, which started out boring and ended with a thrilling came-from-behind win in the last minute for the Colts. That ended the preseason which means next week the NFL season starts!
Friday was the 4th anniversary of Mom’s death. It’s hard to believe it’s already been four years. In some ways it doesn’t seem like it could be that long ago…and in other ways it seems like it’s been twenty years since I last spoke with her. Ann & I took the day off for a 4-day weekend. Abby got up and went in early to school yet again – this time for Jr Optimist Club – so I ran Luke in to school. Ann & I took Black Betty in to Acra’s to look at the exhaust system. They were very nice and showed us what was wrong and were honest about our needs and what they could offer. They ended up referring us to a small exhaust shop in town and saved us some money. That is the reason why we continue to do business with them year after year. After school, Abby had soccer practice and then she and the Pirateers had a pair of performances at the football game vs. Connersville, which the boys won easily, 49-19. Miles and band performed with Abby and the Pirateers. Abby got to present Old Glory for the National Anthem, which was really cool. Hannah and her award-winning travel band team performed after the Pirateers’ halftime routine. Luke had the night off from football practice but got to be a ball boy at the varsity game with his buddy Tyler. After the game, he spent the night at Tyler’s house. Ann & I sat in our normal seats and visited with all our friends. Mom & Sandy joined us and then we went out to eat with them after the halftime show at BWR. While we were eating, Bu & Kirk dropped in so she could pick up her paycheck before heading back out to go running with their friends.
The dogs had us up way too early on Saturday morning – they’re sleeping in Abby’s room tomorrow night! Luke & Bu both had the day off from sports for the holiday weekend. Ann took Abby to a doctor appointment for her headaches, which were still awful. They did a sinus x-ray and will get back with us with the results. Meanwhile Luke & I checked fluids in the vehicles, mowed the yard, grabbed lunch at Wendy’s and watched the Boilermakers win their season opener. Abby went out with Kirk to his grandparents’ anniversary party all afternoon and night. She came home momentarily and left immediately to go pick up Megan. Luke was pretty tired from being up late last night and ended up falling asleep in his room, watching You-Tube on his phone, causing it to die. I went over and did yard work at Gma & Gigi’s house and after getting cleaned up, watched more college football. By the time I realized what time it was, Luke had already missed his movie date with Kasey. I’m sure he’s in the dog house now! He was a grump for a couple hours then went back to bed. It was another beautiful day with temps topping out around 80 with no humidity. Ann baked her first loaf of bread in her breadmaker that Dad brought up for her. It was really, really good! We have several social media pictures to share this week.
We enjoyed sleeping in on Sunday morning. Abby decided not to work at Buffalo Wings & Rings. Luke had the day off from basketball practice. He dug his way out of the dog house by taking Kasey out to the movies…for real this time! They saw Suicide Squad and enjoyed it. We had Mom & Sandy over for lunch and euchre. Mom & Sandy brought home made mac & cheese and a ton of fruit. Ann grilled burgers and dogs, made baked beans, corn on the cob and jalapeno popper dip. We also had angel food cake, chocolate pie and sugar cream pie – yum!! Ann & I ended up winning the best of 5 series, 3-2. We had a fun afternoon, talking and laughing. Abby had Britney over for lunch then went out running with her girlfriends the rest of the day and didn’t come home till late. Matt ended up staying up at school this weekend. We spent the rest of the evening watching TV and enjoying the break in the action. We hope our very close family friend Phyllis is feeling better after having some health issues earlier this week. Get well soon, sweetie!!
