The December’s Foggy Freeze

It was a cold, busy week as we creep ever closer to Christmas vacation time again already. My, how this year has flown past us… Matt worked hard up at college, getting good grades on a Science test and then nearly acing his math test! Abby balanced her time between dance, school, work and her social life. Luke played three away games, which kept us busy and you know its Christmastime when Ann’s work has their annual Santa event. Her knees continued to give her trouble and although she is opting to deal with the pain in lieu of surgery, she did schedule a procedure she’d been putting off for a few years. As for me; with the combination of not feeling well, the cold weather and the busy week – I only got in 8 miles of walking, which was evident when I got on the scale. Hello again and welcome back to the Scheu Family Blog.
Monday was warm but rainy way to start the week. Abby enjoyed the Crossfire while Tonya was in the shop for her exhaust system. She had Pirateers after school and Luke had basketball practice. I didn’t walk due to being under the weather and it was raining too hard to get out in it. Ann made a big pot of chili that we would enjoy a few times during this busy week.

Tuesday was a busy day at work but it was our prettiest day of the week, getting up around 60°! Abby got Tonya back from the shop and grudgingly returned the Crossfire to Gigi. She had Student Council before school then had Randall over for dinner and to watch The Simpsons marathon with us. Ann & I left work early to drive nearly two hours to South Dearborn Middle School to watch Luke and the 7th grade Pirates face the Squires. I was able to do about a half mile of walking at the school, despite it being chilly down in the boondocks. Their gym was very dim, which made it really weird to play in, much less watch the game. Ann got some pictures, but I had to really edit them to make them look normal. It obviously had an effect on the boys, who came out very flat and missed layup after layup as well as their free throws in the first half. Couple that with really poor officiating and the boys found themselves down nearly 20 at halftime, being held to only 8 points on three made buckets in the first half! Coach made some great adjustments and lit a fire under their rears during halftime and the boys came out swinging! They picked up their pressure defense and starting hitting some shots, coming all the way back and winning 42-38 to bring their record to 4-1 on the year. Luke’s game stats: 2 points on 1-1 shooting with 4 rebounds, 2 blocks, 1 turnover forced and he ended up fouling out with 5 fouls. We picked up the Barney Mobile from Acra’s after the game and I uploaded the game tape to Hudl before falling asleep on the couch.

We had a chilly start to our Wednesday morning in the low 40s and a strong breeze. I had another long day at work (was it a full moon??). I finally got out to walk after work for about 30 minutes. Abby was in early to school then had a Pirateers performance at halftime of the girls’ basketball game vs. Jac-Cen-Del, which they eventually won in double OT! She missed jazz class due to her routine, so she ended up staying to watch the game with her buddy Damon and then they went out to BWR to have dinner to see Randall at work. Meanwhile we came home to watch the #15 Boiler basketball game vs. #14 Louisville and although they made a run at the end, they came up short again.

We started off December cold. We said good-bye to no-shave November, so off with the month-old beard that morning for my lovely wife! Abby had Pirateers after school then went on to tap class before coming home to wrap Christmas presents and fall asleep early while doing homework. I was able to get out and walk a couple miles before Ann & I left early to travel an hour and a half to East Central and watch Luke and the 7th grade Pirates basketball team face Sunman Dearborn Middle School. Coach Ben switched up the lineup a little but Luke started in his 6th straight game at center and made a lot of hustle plays for the team, as has become the norm for him. The game was close till the 4th quarter when they opened it up and won going away, 46-29. That brings their record to 5-1 on the year. Luke’s stats: 2 points on 1-1 shooting to go along with 6 rebounds, 1 block, 3 steals & a turnover forced. Ann and I came home and had chili while I uploaded the game tape to Hudl and she fell asleep in the chair, missing tap class. Later, we watched the Cowboys win against a tough Vikings defense to run their record to 11-1 on the year! Wow!!

It was another cold one on Friday. Luke had basketball practice after school while Abby worked at BWR. I walked 5K after work in 40 degree weather. It was brisk but invigorating…though I have to admit that my top lip and chin were strangely cold for some reason… Ann made some yummy buffalo chicken dip that we munched on for dinner while I fixed a laptop for her co-worker and we relaxed, enjoying a rare night off – watching a few movies: Finding Dory, The Shallows and The Revenant. We have lots of new social media pictures to share this week: Dad & Lynn; Bu and friends; the turkey butter; the pooches; more Abs and friends; Phyllis & Dick; Mark visiting Alabama with his senior twins; Wendy & Bethany; John & June’s kids & grandkids at their FLA home; Aunt Sharon had a bday this week; my other Aunt Sharon; Stoewers – Dana & girls and Mom Stoe and sis; more Scheus on the beach; Chris & Jason; Allen & Frankie; Seth & Hannah; Tom & Lucy; more Scheus; Phyllis again; Metallica’s new LP topped the charts on the Top 200 albums charts; Cowboys memes; Brett Michaels played here last weekend; and Florence Henderson and Fidel Castro passed away last week.

We were up early on Saturday morning. Matt did not come home to work due to his hands still are not healed properly. Ann & Bu went to Columbus for SIOBGYN’s annual Donuts w/ Santa event (and drug poor Randall along with them). They went out for lunch and shopping afterwards. Luke & I went to South Ripley for the third game of the week. I love their gym! It is very nice. That morning, the boys came to play. They were fired up early and came out hot. They blew the game open before halftime, leading by 20 at the break. Luke started at center again and would end up sitting most of the second half along with the other starters as the boys went on to win by 30, 54-24! Their record now stands at 6-1. Luke again played a high-energy game, running and jumping, playing strong defense and contributing where he could on offense. Luke’s stats: 0 points on 0-1 shooting, an assist and a turnover to go along with 6 rebounds, 3 blocks and a forced turnover. Afterwards we did some HW hunting, grabbed lunch at Taco Bell, ran a few errands and came home to watch college football championships and take naps. Later, Abby and the Pirateers performed at halftime of the boys’ basketball game where the Pirates faced their rivals – the Batesville Bulldogs. Randall rode to the game with us. We saw one of my best friends, Paul, at the game. He was there with his boys. They were there to support the Bulldogs, as they live there now. Luke ran around with his buddies at the game and ended up leaving with and staying the night at the Hellmichs. The girls looked pretty good but there was some girl-drama when one of the seniors accidentally got tripped. They did their pre-game routine with the cheerleaders again. It was awesome and I only wish they would do it for every home game. For some weird reason, they are not, unfortunately. It is a high-energy workout that really gets the crowd going. At the half, the girls had a pair of dances – one facing the home crowd and one facing the visitors, including the ending part that was done directly in front of their cheer block! Because the band had the top walkway blocked, I had to hustle down a flight of stairs, across the gym and back up a flight of stairs between dances. I only missed two notes of the 2nd routine! I stopped and talked with Paul for a few minutes before the game started back up. Ann & I took Bu & Randall out to eat at BWR then came home to watch college football, a movie (Ms. Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children) and the UFC Tournament of Champions event until the wee hours of the morning. I hadn’t been up that late in a long time…not without a few cold beverages anyhow! Poor Lola wasn’t feeling well, crying every time she moved. We think she strained a muscle and has zero pain tolerance (unlike Molly who never even whimpers). Ann gave her a little medicine that indeed helped her but it might have upset her tummy as she ended up puking in Abby’s bed at some point that night.

We finally got to enjoy sleeping in on Sunday morning. It was nice. And it was a great day to sleep in – cold, damp, foggy, overcast and just plain nasty. We thought we might get some snow, but it was all rain. We eventually got up and did our weekly household chores. It would end up being a fast day of football and naps. Ann made buffalo chicken sandwiches for lunch and decorated the fire place mantel with our Christmas stockings. I picked up Lukey and ran to the store. Gma came over for a little while to visit in the late afternoon. And Abby worked at BWR until late. The football games were outstanding today and we learned that the college football playoffs will consist of Alabama, Clemson, Ohio State and Washington – meaning Penn State and Michigan did not make it. How in the world did Ohio State make it even though they didn’t even win the Big Ten?! Next week we should start seeing who is going to all the bowls. IU is eligible but Purdue isn’t this year. And in basketball, IU knocked off UNC this week while PU looked sloppy…Haas better step up his game or this is going to be a long year… Randall came over for dinner once Bu got home. He stuck around to watch The Walking Dead & of course Talking Dead before we called it a night. Here are some random pictures from this week.
