I’m Changing Faster than the Weather

The third week of the new year is already in the rearview mirror. It was a fast week that saw sub-freezing temperatures early in the week rise and the snow melt away by the weekend. Luke had a good basketball game this week and his team has a real chance of attaining a 20-win season. Abby had a couple dances and facilitated her final Pirateers camp. I remember when she was the little girl attending her first camp… She worked less this week, which meant we actually got to see a little more of her. Matt got back to school and was on the news…in a good way! Ann got in a little scrapbooking and I just missed my walking goal by getting in about 13 miles this week, despite the challenging conditions. Honestly, as cold as it was early in the week, I was happy with this total. Mom O was back out at ball games again, which was a great hurdle for her to overcome. Ms. Phyllis is doing better and is making progress in rehab. Dad B is doing well at home – slow – but on the rebound. He is prepping for his sleep study as I write this today. As the NFL playoffs are winding down, we find ourselves right in the middle of college basketball season and just around the corner is Speed Week at Daytona. It’s an exciting time to be a sports fan! Hello again and welcome to the latest edition of the Scheu Family Blog.

The kids got to sleep in on Monday, thanks to a 2-hour delay for school due to the all the snow and ice overnight. Matt was off school for MLK Day. Ann & I got up and went back to work on slick roads but Black Betty handled it easily. I walked about 2.5 miles after a fast day at work. I walked at the mall for the first time in my life. It was kind of sad to see that there were more walkers than customers and workers combined. I think I counted 13 stores open…and that included the unmanned arcade. I registered over 10K steps again. My GPS wasn’t working so Map My Walk was whack. Thankfully my new watch kept track for me and I could go back in and edit my workout. Luke had basketball practice at the junior high. Abby worked out at the YMCA, went out to eat with friends at ElRep then came home unexpectedly due to a nasty headache – missing her work at the dance studio as well as her dance class with Ms. Kuyhlia. She went to bed and we didn’t see her the rest of the night. Ann tried to take a pizza and a bottle of wine to Amy’s house to surprise her that night, but she came home a half hour later because she couldn’t find her… The good news is that we all enjoyed a large Pizza King pizza at home that night! …but we hope Ms. Amy’s ok… Our first batch of pix are those that Gigi took of Bu at the Batesville game last week…

It snowed all day Tuesday but it didn’t amount to much. We saw three stalled cars and a pair of slide-offs on the way in to work. The kids enjoyed another 2-hr delay for school. Matt began his 2nd semester of his first senior year of college that day. Ann & I had a slow ride to work on the snowy/icy roads. I walked a 5K at the mall after work with the best time of the year! It stunk that my GPS was still screwy in the mall. My watch showed me that I had averaged under a 16-minute mile pace that evening! Abby did not work but did have Pirateers practice that evening. Luke had a basketball game vs. Waldron that evening. Mom & Sandy attended, which was a big lift for Lukey. The Mohawks kept it close through the first quarter but after that we pulled away quickly and the route was on! IN the end, it was a complete blow out, with the boys winning by 40; 67-26! It was their biggest margin of victory of the year and possibly of their junior high career. Luke started at center again. He had the distinction of scoring the first and last points for the team that evening, including his 1st 3-pointer of the year! Luke’s stats: 5 points on 2-5 shooting, including 1-2 from the arc and a turnover. He had 7 rebounds and 3 tip-outs to go with a steal and a block. I think he had one foul. We took him out for dinner at El Rep afterward to celebrate and ended up with Abby and her besties Mary & Julia. We came home and I uploaded the video to Hudl and fell asleep after watching #3 Purdue win against Wisconsin!

It snowed all morning on Wednesday and then the sun came out and it didn’t snow again the rest of the week. We saw a nasty little accident on the way in to work despite roads being clear for the first time in a week. It was the same location that I helped pull a guy out of a burning truck on the way to work years ago. The kids were on a two-hour delay for school for the 3rd straight day. Matt was on the channel 6 (ABC) TV news as part of the U-Indy mentoring program. It was a nice little piece. I walked three miles at the mall after work again that evening. Abby had dance classes with Ann at Dixon Dance Studio. Luke enjoyed the night off from basketball practice so he ran around with his neighborhood friends after school. That meant that I got to enjoy a quiet night watching my DVR’ed shows and keeping warm on the couch on another frigid night.

School finally started on time for the kids on Thursday. There may have been some shouting that morning between the kids. It was warmer that day – right at the freezing mark. That was plenty warm enough for me to finally get back outdoors and walk around the airport grounds and the IUPUC campus. It was mostly cleared with only a few hundred feet or still snowy and icy. Still, I got in a 5K and it felt great to be back outdoors. Abby enjoyed a 3-hour Pirateers practice then went over to Trevin’s house until the wee hours due to falling asleep while doing homework yet again. You’d think she’d come up with a new excuse every once in a while! Luke had a tough basketball practice then he and the team stayed afterwards to watch the girls’ basketball team. Ann made stuffed peppers for dinner and we enjoyed a quiet night of our currently-favorite DVR’ed shows: 911, SWAT, SEAL Team, Criminal Minds, Scorpion & Falling Water. Here are random pictures from our recent adventures.

I had the day off on Friday due to our low census. We’ve all started taking turns using our PTO, which is normal during this time of year. It would’ve been nice to sleep in…but there is no sleeping-in when our kids have to get up for school…they’re so loud! Ann had a ½ day of work. The kids had another full day of school. Luke enjoyed a rare 2nd night off in one week. He had Luke H (“Mitch”) over to spend the night. I did a few things around the house, got in a quick nap and then got Black Betty’s oil changed and gave her a good washing. Bu & Molie went to get their nails done in Columbus after school then bebopped around town before heading back to school where Abby & Pirateers performance at the boys’ varsity basketball game vs Madison. They had a big night; participating in three portions of the evening – they performed pregame with the cheerleaders, presented the colors during the National Anthem, then danced to “New Rules” at halftime. Afterward, Ann & the kids went out to dinner at BWR while I went out to the Sunken Boat Bar to have dinner with Bryan. He made a homemade, low-carb pizza, sausage rolls, a couple no-carb cocktails and we watched the new Will Smith Netflix movie. It was fun to get out and catch up with him.

Ann was up early and out the door on Saturday morning. She, Shawna and the girls went scrapbooking in Burney. Abby helped facilitate the annual Pirateers camp at the elementary school. It is obviously her last one, so it was bittersweet. She had the kindergarteners group this year. She ran Luke & Luke to basketball practice at the Fieldhouse. I picked up Luke & we did some HW hunting then came home to watch the #3 Boilermakers blow out Iowa by 25 points. It was the first time these seniors beat the Hawkeyes on their turf. They’ve really been on a roll here lately. Ann came home after Luke & I did a few things around the house. Luke stayed back to finish rearranging the family room (again) while Ann & I went to watch Bu & the Pirateers perform with the camp attendees at halftime of the boys’ basketball game. Abby had about twenty little girls in her class. I would say overall, they probably had about 100 attendees at the camp and it was a good showing at the performance that evening. As it is every year, it was packed for this game with lots of little ones running around. It was also the Hall of Fame initiation night, which meant it was a really long evening out at the high school. While we came home to watch an evening of MMA – UFC 220 and Bellator 192 and fall asleep on the couch, Abby went out with her girlfriends and then ended up out at Trevin’s house until late again.

The dogs had me up before the dawn on Sunday morning while everyone else enjoyed sleeping in. I got up and started working on the blog. It got pretty warm today – somewhere near 50. And as we welcomed the warmer temps, we said goodbye to all our snow. Just yesterday, the yard was still all white. By noon today, it was completely gone. Even the neighborhood – which had snow and ice-covered roads just yesterday – were clear by the time Abby went to work a double shift at Wings & Rings. We didn’t see but just a few minutes of her today. Once everyone got up, we got to our weekly household chores. We watched a few DVR’ed shows and then watched the AFC and NFC Championship games. I hated to see New England win again in the first game, though it was entertaining. Luke watched it with me while Ann slept and then worked on getting the planning stages up and running for After Prom. It’s hard to believe it’s already time to start planning Abby’s final After Prom event. Luke went to the Fieldhouse with Tyler to play basketball, missing most of the NFC game. Ann made a low-carb dinner of parmesan-encrusted salmon and cauliflower. I have to admit it was pretty cool to hear Tony Romo call the first game and then Troy Aikman call the second game. Luke didn’t miss much of a game as it was a blowout and we ended up turning it off. So, now the Super Bowl is set – and I can’t stand either team as the Patriots will face the Eagles. I hope they both lose… After we turned off the game, we watched a couple shows and then, being worn out from the week, I headed to bed early so I would be ready to do it all over again tomorrow… We have lots of social media pictures to share this week.
