Got to Pay Your Dues…and You Know it don’t Come Easy

After the nice break we had last week, it was back to reality for everyone this week. Matt had a long week of teaching classes at Z-West. He enjoyed coaching wrestling and we even got to see him for a few hours this weekend. Abby had her final full week of the first semester at FC. We got to see her for a few hours this week as well. Luke had a full week of school at GCHS. He had wrestling practice every day and a big tourney this past weekend. He took his lumps as he continues to pay his dues, wrestling varsity in his first year of the sport. He spent a lot of his free time running around with his friends. Ann continued to do great with her knees. She was sick all week, as Abby shared her illness with her last weekend. I returned to my keto diet this week, losing five pounds. Although I fell short of my exercise goal, still managed to log over thirteen miles. I got to spend a little time with my buddies this week, which is always good for the soul. Hello again and welcome back to the Scheu Family Blog.

We had another cold, wet start to the week. Ann & I headed back to work. We had busy, fast days then I walked a 5K. Luke went back to school for the first time in almost a week. He went on to wrestling practice that he said, “sucked ass” then went out to Kam’s house where they detailed the Hot Rod Lincoln. They left the doors open and radio on too long and when he tried to leave, the battery was dead. I might have had that happen to me a time or two when I was his age…LOL. Abby came down to see Ann for a bit and pickup some things at her office after she finished with classes. She went on to her formal meeting that evening and had fun with her Secret Santa gift exchange. Matt went back to school and wrestling practice as well that day. I’m pretty sure it was snowing when we got home. We put away the rest of the Christmas stuff that didn’t make the cut this year and hung up the old snowflake lights on the front porch. Afterwards, we binge-watched the Simpsons until bedtime. Here are pictures from Luke’s wrestling meet last week.

We had another cold start to our Tuesday. Luke got up and got going pretty much on his own that morning, much to our surprise. He had a long day of school then went on to wrestling practice. Afterward, he went to Kam’s house and hung out with him until late. I dropped Ann off at work then went on to my cardiologist appointment. All is well on that front and I don’t have to come back for six months. I had a busy day at work then walked three miles out in the cold – good thing I have this beard grown-out! Ann had a good day at work. We dropped a prescription off at CVS and went over to Mom & Sandy’s house to burn some time. We visited and laughed for about an hour before picking up Ann’s meds and heading home. I hope this helps her with her cough that she caught from Abby this weekend! Luke came home and Ann treated him for some sort of suspected skin infection.

The temps really dipped overnight and we had frost on the windshields to scrape on Wednesday morning. Later in the day, we rejoiced in the return of the sun finally! The dogs struggled last night and had me up twice. They were back and forth prowling. We think it was a combination of variables, so we have a plan for tonight. I finally just stayed up with them at about 5 am and just showered and started my day while the others slept. Annie & I both had long days at work – it almost makes me want to not take vacation…almost – LOL! I walked a 5K on a pretty afternoon but with a strong, biting wind that reminded me it was still December. A big thanks goes out to Maryann and Sandy for helping us get the dogs to the groomer that day. We waited too long again and all Julie could do was just shave them down. Luke went to school then on to wrestling practice again. He did not have to wrestle-off for the 220 position. He went over to Kam’s house until his curfew that night. Ann went out to dinner with her scrapbooking friends at ElRep when we got home from work. That gave me a quiet night on the couch with the dogs. I napped to my DVR’d shows until Ann came home. Luke was still concerned with his skin issue, so Ann got him set up with a doctor to see it tomorrow. Ann turned in early that night, still not feeling well and a little tired from her medication from last night. I ended up napping on and off until I finally gave it up headed on to bed myself. Here are pictures of us putting up the Christmas tree and decorations last weekend.

Thankfully, the dogs did MUCH better last night, so we think our interventions worked as we slept until the alarm went off on Thursday morning. I think it also helped that they were awake all day with the groomer so they were tired last night. I guess we’ll see how they do the rest of the week. It was another morning of frosty windshields with temps in the 20s- brrr! Luke’s arm wasn’t any worse, but it wasn’t any better either – despite treating it. It’s not terrible, just a dot about two cm wide. However, the coach said that if it isn’t treated that he’ll have to sit out the tourney this coming weekend. As you might imagine, he’s consumed by that thought. He drove over to Columbus and saw the doctor. They took a culture but thought it was nothing to worry about at all. Ann & I had long days at work again. I have been stupid busy all week. Justin, Vic & I went to Sirloin Stockade where I enjoyed a big keto lunch so it felt good when I walked just short of a 5K after work. Luke returned to school and then went on to wrestling practice. He picked up Kam afterward and then went on to the junior high school to watch Addison and the 8th grade Pirates basketball team. Ann & I relaxed for a couple hours then I went out to the Sunken Boat Bar to meet up with the boys for Poker Night. We had a small crew – only Bryan, Shawn, Rick & I were able to make it that evening. We had a good time watching the Cowboys lose to the Bears while playing cards, enjoying a keto dinner and enjoying some adult beverages. I was the big wiener that night. We enjoyed playing all sorts of different games, including a couple of new ones we can’t wait to introduce to the other guys called (especially Bob) called “Pregnant 3’s” and “The Good, the Bad & the Ugly.” Luke was in the paper again that night as part of the wrestling team. The article featured a great photo of him celebrating after his first pin! Here are random pictures from our recent adventures.

Friday brought with it a much warmer start to the day. Luke was up early and out the door to go get breakfast with his buddies. He had a quick day of school then went to an easy wrestling practice. Ann & I had fast days at work, leaving in the early afternoon when her office closed. She is still not feeling well – feverish and coughing. All she could think about was getting home to nap. We ran a few errands around town before coming home. I was hoping to get out in the yard but it got colder and colder as the afternoon went on, so I ended up staying in and writing out the html code for this week’s blog. We watched a couple DVR’d shows and the next two episodes of Jack Ryan on Prime Video. I fell asleep and turned in early – before Luke even got home. He and Brayden drove the Hot Rod Lincoln over to Batesville to watch a basketball game. He got back early so he could get to bed, as he had to be up early in the morning for a long day of wrestling – five matches in total! Here are pictures of recent additions to my Hot Wheels collection.

Luke was up early to head into school for his next wrestling meet. Ann did a good job of helping motivate him. I got up shortly afterward to go watch him in Indianapolis that day. Abby & Megan came home from FC to get Ann and take her to get Cornerstone donuts and travel to Columbus for the annual ‘Donuts with Santa’ event. This is an event put on by Ann’s office for all the folks that have had kids with them. They dropped off Tonya at the high school and borrowed the Hot Rod Lincoln so they would have plenty of room for the 40 dozen donuts! I drove Barney up to Indy for the annual Decatur Super 8 Tourney. I met Matt & Taylor up at Decatur Central high school, where we sat with the Lowes, Brays and Dances. Although Luke weighed in at 192, he wrestled up at 220. We noticed that all the boys were not only 220-poundes but all upperclassmen – most of them were seniors. First up, we faced Arsenal Tech. Luke was a little slow during that match and was quickly taken down. Although he put up a good fight, he was pinned in the 1st round. Even though Luke was defeated, the team won 39-24. It would be the only win on the day. In the second round, Luke was pinned in the first round again when we faced Terre Haute South. The Pirates were soundly beaten, scoring only 11 points on a pair of wins. We faced Eastern in the third round. It was more of the same as Luke was pinned in the first period, despite starting strong. We were beaten worse than before, only scoring 9 points. After a brief break, we faced a strong Greenwood team that only allowed us one victory. Luke was not that one as we was pinned in the first period again. We really thought he could win that one, but he got stuffed on a shot and taken straight to his back. Although he fought, he was not match for the bigger, heavier man. In the closing round, we faced the host DC Hawks. He survived the first round and was down only 0-2. He was doing a decent job of breaking his guy down but ended up getting reversal-ed and was turned to his back. As he was trying to roll through, the ref called a split-second pin. It was bullshit, mixed in with a little home cookin’ and the last match of the day for the ref. I’m convinced he was ready to go home. We lost not only that match, but the team lost again, this time 12-69. Luke went 0-5 on the day while the team was 1-4. That leaves their records at 2-8 and 4-6, respectively. Matt & Taylor had to leave after the 3rd round as Matt had a work (staff) party he had to attend. I signed Luke out and took him out for some comfort food. I tried to encourage him to go somewhere like Culvers, but he was hellbent on Mexican, so we drove to a nearby restaurant and ordered some grub. The chips and queso were outstanding. Our meals were pretty good but I had to say no to the tea, when it smelled like feces – it was gross! I went with just the water. Even after I pointed it out and had the waitress smell it, she seemed like it was no big deal. It was nasty, but she took it off our bill. He slept the entire ride back to town, tuckered out from his long day. I dropped him off at school and he drove to Kam’s house to hang out. Later, he came home with Kam & Grayson and they ended up spending the night here. I watched the next couple episodes of the Mandalorian on Disney + and then I went to bed to watch the UFC fights. We have a ton of social media pictures to share this week.

I was up before the dawn on Sunday morning with the darn dogs. My c-pap had me up a couple times earlier that morning so I just stayed up and let Ann sleep-in. I watched the first episode of season 2 of Star Trek Discovery on CBS All-Access and a classic 1968 Star Trek episode on MeTV. When Ann got up, we got around to our weekly household chores. Luke and the boys got up and Kam got picked up by his dad. Luke & Grayson got up and cleaned up the front yard, where we had gotten TP’ed overnight. We captured it all on the Ring camera, but the boys didn’t recognize them or their cars. The boys had used one of the air mattresses last night. I’m not sure what happened, but poor Gray woke up with a partially deflated bed. We’ll end up sending it back to Amazon to get a new one. Luke took Grayson out for breakfast and then ran him home. He came back and cleaned out his car. He had a large amount of clothes in there – now he had clothes again! Later, Luke & I checked fluids in the vehicles, mowed the grass and winterized the yard tools. This is by far the latest in the year that we’ve ever mowed or PM’ed our tools. Luke went to go hang out with Kam and Gray while Ann napped and I wrote out the blog and watched RedZone on the big screen. Later, it clouded up and got colder as the day wore on. When Annie finally work up, we ran out to Walmart for supplies so she could make caramel apple dip for work tomorrow. We napped on and off watching football, Purdue basketball (won again) and a couple DVR’d shows. It was a relaxing way to wind down the week before we start all over again tomorrow…

Next up, we have our Waybac segment. This time we lead off with a bunch of pictures form Ann’s photography class at Franklin College, circa 1990l then we move on to a slew of pictures from our wedding then our reception and then the honeymoon – all in September 1995; and finally we handful of pictures from the kids at Christi’s house, circa 2002.
