…And Feel at Once that I Belonged to Normalcy at Last

We’ve had a great week since we last touched base. Things continued to SLOWLY get back to some sort of normalcy around here. Matt taught school in Zionsville during the day and worked in the kitchen at a restaurant in Carmel at night. He helped Taylor celebrate her 22nd birthday this weekend. Abby began packing for college this week. She babysat for a little extra beer money next month when she turns 21. She spent the weekend at Garrett’s house to help him celebrate his 21st birthday. Her best friend Megan was there as well to celebrate her own 20th birthday. Luke had a full week of classes and football practice this week. He had his first competition since the regional wrestling tournament, back in February. Granted, it was only a scrimmage, but it was on a varsity field with referees, so it’s close enough! Ann & I had a quiet weekend, which helped us recover from our busy work week. I played 8 rounds (72 holes) of frisbee golf, which – combined with walking after work – helped me to achieve 22 miles of exercise this week. It was great to get out and film Luke but it was even better to sit with him on the couch and watch it with him afterward. There were minor inconveniences, but if that’s what it takes to keep us playing football – so be it! It was a typical hot and humid, late-summer week. It was the final full week of having Abs with us since the whole Coronavirus thing hit back in the spring, as she will move back to campus next weekend. We enjoyed seeing Mom & Sandy a couple times this week and Dad said he was doing good -feeling great after his back surgery last week. He’s already out taking walks along the coastline. Although we’re definitely not all the way back, it was nice to finally get back to some normal activities in our lives. Hello again and welcome back to the Scheu Family Blog.

We had a stormy start to our Monday. It rained on and off all day long. The heat and humidity were almost unbearable. Just sitting outside was enough to drench me in sweat within minutes. Luke returned to school and did a good job of getting up on time. He had a good football practice but was really tired that night. He went out to dinner with Brayden at El Reparo then came home and went on to bed. Meanwhile, Abby enjoyed her day up at Gary’s house before coming home that night. Matt had his first day of school at Zionsville West Middle School. Like a good boy, he sent me a picture…now I just need Abby’s and I will be able to create our annual First Day of School photo for Ann. Ann & I both had really fast days. Hell, I looked up and it was already 2:00. Ann said she did the same thing at 4:30. Justin beat me by a single pound again. After work, I walked a 5K then Ann & I went to a football parents meeting. We picked up beef from the Bests and delivered it to Mom & Sandy. We stayed to visit for a little while then came home where Abby & Mary were practicing throwing frisbees. I picked up the girls and we went out to the city park to play some frisbee golf. I shot from the front tees with the girls to warmup my arm. Next, I moved to the back tees. The park was busier than we’ve seen it recently. There were people fishing, four groups playing frisbee golf, a big group playing basketball, the mini golf was open and had several people there and to top it off, there was a big group watching the ball game on diamond 5. We had a wait on most holes during the 2nd round due to the folks using golf discs and taking their sweet time. We eventually started throwing from the tees while they were still on the green. We threw pretty well. I had a pair of 25s while Abs had a 32 and a 35 and Mary had a 32 & a 37. We came home and found Kristie at the house, talking with Ann. I had a shower and a cocktail, enjoying a couple Cinn Sodas and a Spicy Ancho Lemonade while Ann cooked Fireworks popcorn for dinner. Abby & Mary made jalapeno popper dip that was super spicy – yum! Julia came over later and the girls played cards in the kitchen while Ann & I watched a couple episodes of Yellowstone – well, Ann did…I just slept. I woke myself up snoring on the couch so I went on to bed don’t think I moved the whole night. It stormed again overnight, which meant I was out like a light. With a combined five hours of exercise, it really sapped my energy. Lynn texted us that evening, telling us that Dad had a great day and was doing physical therapy. She said it was his best day so far. That made us all feel better about his prognosis… Mary & Julia spent the night with Abs, staying up way too late… Here are random pictures from our recent adventures.

It was back to work and school on Tuesday morning. Luke had a little trouble getting up but eventually got going. He had school and then football again. It was not a good day for football – well, college anyhow as the Big Ten voted to cancel / postpone their season. It was just yesterday when I heard the news that Rondale Moore was sitting out the season. Abs didn’t do much that day, taking it easy with the dogs. Ann & I had really fast days again. Although it looked it was going to rain all morning, I don’t believe it ever did. The heat and humidity were again kicking that day. I walked three miles after work and then dropped off Ann at home and went out to play more frisbee golf. I warmed up with 9 holes from the front tees, recording at 25 and then shot 18 holes from the back tees. In my first round, I shot another 25 with some of my best throws of the year. Abs joined me for my final round. She 34 while I threw a par 27. On my 2nd throw on hole 6, I threw my favorite blue disc in the pond. Thankfully, our new grabber-nabber came in today. So, Abs ran home and got it and sure enough, I was able to rescue it from donation! When we got home, I started the grill and jumped in the shower. The girls had a little patio time, cooking chicken and warding off bugs. We had gin & tonics and then I had a Stone Sour, which really helped me unwind. Ann made grilled chicken, corn on the cob and potatoes & peppers. Afterward, the kids went to their rooms and that was the last we saw of them. Ann & I watched another three episodes of Yellowstone before we both fell asleep with the dogs in the A/C. We heard from Lynn, who has Dad at home in their New Jersey house and is doing well. He was obviously tired but said he’d text when he was up to it…

Abby got up early and headed to North Vernon to watch kids for Ann’s employee. She wasn’t gone five minutes and started calling the house and then my cell phone. She was panicked and had just hit one of the city’s big trash cans. Apparently, there was a can in the road with a car coming the other way, so she couldn’t get over. She was afraid to stop suddenly because there was a car tailgating her. When she hit it, it knocked her passenger side mirror clean off the car. She didn’t know what to do. I had her turn around and go get it and put it in her car. She was visibly shaken but was able to refocus and go watch the kids. She said she had a long day and they wore her out! We’re hoping it was good birth control. 😊 I got a quote from Jerry and will have her bring it to work and have Vic look at it as well. We had to find a detour on our way to work due to construction on Nortonburg Rd. Luke had another day of school and football practice – so far, so good! Ann & I had long days at work. I was tired but pushed through. Justin, Vic & I went to the Buff for a late lunch. We had two vendors in-house which made it an easier day, but just long. I walked three miles after work on a hot, sweaty day. We stopped by the high school on our way home to buy tickets for this weekend’s football scrimmage! They moved Senior Night from the final home game to the first home game because we just don’t know what the future brings…and I hate living like that – I like to have my stuff planned-out, so this is really throwing me off my game…but that’s the world we live in now. I dropped off Ann and went out to the park to play a quick round of frisbee golf. I threw a par 27 from the back tees. It was another day of temps in the 90s with 70-80% relative humidity. Nine holes were plenty. I was a sweaty mess by the time I got done. After I got cleaned-up, Abby & I patched the fence where Molly keeps getting out (twice again today). After Luke & I showered, Ann made Fireworks popcorn for dinner and we watched Shark Week shows. Dad said he is already feeling so much better. There is obviously site pain where he had incisions, but he said his back itself is pain-free! Yay!! 😊 Here are photos of the recent additions to my Hot Wheels collection.

On Thursday morning, Luke was up and out of the house before Ann & I. We had to find a detour again on our commute into work due to continued construction on 450N. It was another busy one, which made it go by fast thankfully! Abby came over with Mary and Victor graciously looked at Tonya’s side mirror. Thankfully, he was able to re-secure it! I hope it holds. If it makes it through the weekend, I owe him lunch on Monday! 😊 I got out of work a little late and only managed to walk about two and a half miles on another sweltering day. After dropping off Ann at home, Abby hopped in the car and we went out to the park and played 18 holes of frisbee golf. I did not throw well, but Abby did. In fact, she came within a stroke of beating me for the first time! Had it not been for her bouncing off the pin (3) or bouncing out of the pin (twice!), she would’ve beat me. I had a two-over-par 29 while she had a 30. The 2nd round got even uglier. I lost my treasured baby blue disc to the pond on hole 6. It was so far out I didn’t even try to use the grabber-nabber. Hell, I’m not sure if a 16’ pool skimmer would’ve even reached it. It was a really bad throw. I wound up with a 30 while Abby started to wear out in the heat and humidity and threw a 32. We came home sweaty messes. After getting cleaned-up, I made a grill cheese with peanut butter (don’t judge me), using the amazing loaf of fresh bread we picked up at Jungle Jim’s last weekend. Abs went out with Megan for the evening. Luke returned after school and football practice. He was only home long enough to shower and throw his football stuff in the washer before going out with Brayden for the night. We watched more Shark Week that evening and chilled-out in the wonderful air conditioning with the dogs. I fell asleep on the couch and went to bed early again.

I was up before the alarm on Friday morning. I guess my body finally got caught up on sleep. Luke got to sleep in a little today. Each Friday, school will start about a half hour late so that the teachers can get in their mandated CEU hours. He said he had a good football practice after school and is anxious to get out there tomorrow and finally hit someone else besides his teammates. He got cleaned up and played on his PS4. After dinner, he went out with his buddies to 450N Brewery for a second dinner. Meanwhile, Abby & Ann got coffee & donuts at Dunkin and then went to Ann’s office, here in town. Abs picked up Bladen from the office and came back to the house to babysit. I passed her on my way out of the neighborhood in the truck. I was headed over to Mom & Sandy’s to mow. Bu turned around and came over to hangout with Gma and the dogs. I had only been mowing for a few minutes when I saw them leave, suddenly. After I had finished, I stopped a talked with Maryann for a little while. I jokingly asked if she had scared the kids away. To my surprise, she said yes; that Bladen didn’t like Grandma! I came back home and although it looked like rain, we never did see any precipitation. I went right to it and mowed our yard. Even though it was overcast and cooler (that’s why I got started at 8:30 this morning), the humidity still kicked my ass and really wore me out. I had in over 11K steps before 11 AM! Abby and Bladen went to the bank to set up a new savings account and then met me back at the house. She got him lunch and then they played catch until Ann called, saying they were done at the office. Bladen had me ride in the back with him while Ducky (Abs gave him a stuffed animal) rode up front with Abby. We said good-bye to Bladen and picked up Ann and went on to lunch at El Reparo. I had fish tacos, which were outstanding, and a margarita. We came home and napped while Abby got cleaned-up, packed-up and got presents ready for Megan and Gary…who both have birthdays tomorrow. That afternoon, Abby & I went to the Mart of Wal to pickup our weekly supplies. They had toilet paper and paper towel but were completely sold out of cases of Coke. When we got home, she headed out, picking up puppies to take up there with her. Ann made a really good cheesy-chicken rice casserole with cauliflower rice. We watched an SVU marathon for a while until Shark Week shows came on. We paused for a few minutes to watch the lovely sunset and let Delilah get her “zoomies” out. That night, I had a Godfather cocktail as we wound down the evening watching another few episodes of Yellowstone. We have lots of social media pictures to share this week.

We enjoyed sleeping in on Saturday morning until the pooches woke us up. I sat on the back porch with the dogs and enjoyed some quiet time with them. Although the humidity was still high, it wasn’t quite as hot outside – especially that early in the day. Luke got up and went out to breakfast with the football team at Big Boys. Ann & I drove over to St. Paul for goodies from Wildflour bakery. By going a little later, we were able to go over to the antique shop across the street called Lemons and Lavender Boutique. It had some great pieces – Mom would’ve loved that place! Abs would like it as they have a nice little section of clothing. Gigi would like it as well as there are tons of records. I only went through a fraction of them but did find a little treasure (can’t go home empty-handed!). It is a 45 RPM record from the late 70s. It is an original Ovation Records single by Steve Dahl & Teenage Radiation called, “Do Ya Think I’m Disco” (parody of the Rod Stewart song). I remember Steve with Gary Meyer on the Chicago-area airwaves back in the 80s when we lived in LaPorte. They originally did the morning show on the Loop and then when WLS expanded to an FM station, they had the afternoon show. They did a ton of cool cover songs like this one, Ayatollah (My Sharona by the Knack) and Skylab (Shattered by the Stones) among others. They also famously held Disco Demolition at Comiskey Park in the early 80s, I think, while they were with The Loop. Anyhow, it looks like it was never even played. I can’t wait to play it on my new turntable! 😊 We came home and ate our pastries on the back porch with the dogs. While we were outdoors, Mom & Sandy popped over to say hi, shoot the shit and even came bearing gifts! I have a new game day shirt and hat now! Thanks Gigi!! 😊 We put Lola and Delilah in the house, but Molly stayed out with Pixie and they did great together! Lola, on the other hand was so mad that she purposely peed in three spots. What an a-hole! Molly & I checked fluids in the vehicles, late that morning. Ann & I napped while watching the rest of our recorded episodes of Yellowstone and now have to wait for the weekly episodes to be released on Paramount like everyone else now. We watched the weekly SVU marathon on ION TV. Ann napped while I checked in a new batch of Hot Wheels. Luke left early to catch the bus to the game. Ann & I followed a couple hours later. We loaded up Barney and made the trek to Trafalgar to watch the Pirates varsity football team face Indian Creek in the first competition of the season. It was a scrimmage / practice game but they did have officials. They took turns on offense and defense, running 10-12 plays within an 18-minute window. Each team had the ball three times. The JV followed with two possessions each. We were thrilled to see Luke take every varsity snap on defense. He also subbed in at snifferback and halfback – both were blocking positions. He played well – not great – but for his first varsity start, we were very proud of his efforts. He was obviously tired by the time the final round came around but pushed through. It was a big learning experience for him and we are so happy for him! He had five solo tackles and two assists. Overall, the varsity dominated. The defense gave up one TD on the first play. They didn’t give up a 2nd one until the second-to-last play of the day. On the flipside, our offense scored six times and our defense scored once. Now granted, I’m not sure what level of competition the Indian Creek program is at this year, but we looked good. Will that carry over to Shelbyville next week? I guess we’ll see… It was good to spend time with our sports-parent friends again, but I sure missed Coach Messer and Coach Nobbe that evening. We really enjoyed getting out and watching Luke compete again. Luke went out to eat with a few teammates at Wendy’s after they got back to town. When he came back, we sat down and watched game film even before he even showered – much to his mother’s chagrin. We projected it up on the big screen and enjoyed watching the game again. We talked for a bit after he showered. He’s already thinking about his future and is looking at different options, which is really cool. I didn’t start to think about that until…well, I’m not sure I’ve even started yet.

We enjoyed sleeping in again on Sunday morning. The dogs and I enjoyed a little porch time before coming in and writing out my html code for this week’s blog. We slowly got around to our weekly household chores. While watching NASCAR racing and sci-fi shows on the DVR, I worked on my music collection on my phone, pulling off old stuff I didn’t care for and loading on a bunch of new stuff (to me) that I can’t wait to hear from bands such as Ali Handal, Crazy Lixx, Dirty Honey, Lettuce, Monster Truck, Sturgill Simpson, The Main Squeeze, The Lazys, Tyler Bryant & The Shakedown, Whiskey Myers and many, many more… Luke eventually got up and got outside on a gorgeous day. The humidity was lower and there was a strong breeze. He went out and worked on the Hot Rod Lincoln, giving it a much-needed wash and cleaned-up the inside really nice. We napped on and off and enjoyed the down time. Mom & Sandy came over with Pixie to visit for a while, later that afternoon. Later, Ann took the bag of clothes that Luke wanted to throw away last week and instead washed, took pictures and posted them on Facebook. I think she pretty much sold everything within about 30 minutes! Afterward, Ann made cheesy Fireworks popcorn for dinner as we wound down the evening watching the weekly NCIS LA marathon on ION and later watched a classic movie called American Psycho on the big screen. It was a relaxing way to wind down the weekend and put a cap on another week at the Scheu abode…
