Eighteen Years of American Dream(s)…

Man, it’s official – we’re old! This week was a major milestone for our family. For the first time in a quarter of a decade, we no longer have any minors living in the household. Luke turned eighteen this week, which really hit me hard this week. My little Lukey promised he wouldn’t grow up – that he’d stay little forever and be my little buddy always. He had a big week – not only did he have his birthday but he also worked three jobs, went to football practices, had a football game and even had a date! What a week!! Abby continued working at the station with Gigi this week but also found time to help out Memaw, spend time with her friends and even went to visit Gary. Matt continued to recuperate from knee surgery this week. He began taking classes for his new job and even had a big test this weekend, which he aced! It was good to see him again this week, even if it was for a short period of time. Ann had a fast week at work and enjoyed some time with her girlfriends, doing what she loves – scrapbooking! I had a long week, but enjoyed working with my buddy Justin, watched some live football and played a little frisbee golf. I fell about a mile and a half short of my weekly goal, but still ended up with over thirteen, averaging about 12K steps per day. I’m pretty worn out from the week and look forward to a long, holiday weekend next week to get a little bit of a break. The weather was up and down with lows in the 40s and highs (real-feel) above 100°. We had a ton of rain but also saw some fog and lots of sunshine. The grass loved it – my body, not so much… Still, it was good to spend time with the family this week and for a short moment in time, all the kids were back home again and everything was right in the world again for that moment. Hello and welcome to the latest installment of the Scheu Family Blog.

It was back to work for Ann & I on Monday morning. It was so muggy outside. Black Betty did great that day, happy that I finally gave her the correct treatment for her fuel injector deficit. It was a fast day and the first one, post-Kevin for us at the facility. Justin (the other one) held his first Morning Meeting and moved into his new office. I walked in there before he got in this morning and it was a little sad because all of Kevin’s stuff was gone and it looked so empty. After a non-stop morning, Justin, Vic and I went to Best Buy to swap out my malfunctioning Bose headphones with their Geek Squad. I ALMOST upgraded to the noise-cancelling ones, but I just couldn’t justify the extra expense. We went next door to Mancino’s for a late lunch before coming back to the facility. It wasn’t long before we all had to leave early. I picked up Ann and went to see Jami to get our monthly haircuts. When she was finished with me, I walked a little under two miles around the shopping center – mostly behind it by the strange little swamp back there. I was hoping to play a round of frisbee golf when we got home, but it was raining by then, so I just worked on the blog instead. Meanwhile, Abby worked around the house for Ann, cleaning the kitchen cabinets for her. She went to Franklin to find an outfit for her upcoming job interview and then visited Bri and their friends. She got home after sundown and after Ann had made dinner. She whipped up some delicious pasta dish like it was nothing. Luke worked for Harris, mowing the rental property through a light rain. He had football practice that evening. After coming home to shower, he went back out to get in more lifting at the YMCA that night. We took it easy that evening, watching a few DVR’d shows as well as flipping on Paramount + to watch the first episode of the 2nd season of Evil. We were hoping that Yellowstone had debuted last night, but there’s still no work on its release yet… Here are random pictures from our recent adventures.

We enjoyed a cool start to the day with temps all the way down in the mid-fifties! It was actually a little chilly, so we had to let Black Betty warm up a little before we made the daily commute over to Columbus. It was another good day for Ann & I. While she dealt with needy patients, I worked on a couple unexpected projects that took up most of my day. The boys and I went out to lunch with boss Justin to the new Chinese restaurant that took over the building where Texas Roadhouse used to be – called Sophea. It was OK – about what you’d expect from that type of place. We had a good talk at lunch and returned to work for a fast afternoon. I walked a little under three miles on a picture-perfect day. There was sunshine, low humidity and temps in the lower 70s – hell yeah! Meanwhile, Luke had a good day then went to football practice that night until just before sunset. Abby had a busy day. She worked at WTRE, selling a big 4th of July ad to the Lowe’s. She also helped with their 100 Days of Summer Fun out in the front yard of the station. Afterward, she worked at Gma’s house, helping her clean their home. She enjoyed driving Betty White and said she wanted to do more of it. When we got back from work, Abby & I jumped in Tonya and headed over to Batesville to break in my new frisbee golf disc set. It worked as I shot a two-under 25. Abby had a respectable one-over par, 28. Ann got on her elliptical for the second time in a year, going for about five minutes! We came home and had a find-your-own dinner night, which was just fine with me. We took it easy that evening, watching a couple DVR’d shows. As always, I fell asleep and went on to bed, calling it an early night…

It was noticeably warmer on Wednesday morning and would continue that trend all day, topping out at about 80 that afternoon. We had a good day at work. The boys and I went to lunch at Snappy Tomato, which helped the day go fast. I walked about three and a half miles after work, which felt really good. There is so much construction going on around the airport property right now. Abby worked with Gigi at WTRE but didn’t make any sales that day. Instead, she played with kitty to cheer her up after being told no by clients. She was tired that day, getting in a little late and then napping all afternoon after she got off work. She was PO’ed when Delilah caught another bird that morning but wouldn’t come in when it was time for her to go to work. She, like me, will begin using the training collar with her again…as she is getting a little big for her hairy britches. Luke had a busy day, working at Mom & Sandy’s house for hours. Though he didn’t have football practice, he did lift at the YMCA twice that day. He was a little shit that day, much like his dog. He called me that evening and gave me some BS story about being at Taco Bell and talking to the police because some had hit his car and sped away and now his car was too damaged to start. He had me going and I got so mad that I hung up on him and refused to answer when he called back. What a turd! When Ann & I got home, I dropped her off and went to play a round of frisbee golf. It was not a good time. I threw like crap and nearly lost my disc twice. I tried integrating one of the new discs that I got for Father’s Day and it did not work so well for me. I knew there was going to be a learning curve – but geez. I threw a four-over-par 31…ugh. When I got back, Ann was cooking dinner – something she called Mexican lasagna – think a taco but more like a casserole. It was delicious, of course. Bu & I hopped in Tonya and went to Gma & Gigi’s house to swap cars. Sandy loaned us the Ford to drive to football the next day and kept Tonya to take to work. Abs made us a cocktail for a nightcap. To go with the dinner, tequila was the main ingredient. She made me a regular margarita while she made herself a blueberry marg. They were both really strong and did a good job of mellowing us both. Abs retreated to her room to play some video games while Ann read and I watched a couple DVR’d shows. We ended the evening watching the new episode of I’ll Be Gone in the Dark. Nothing like a true crime / murder show right before you go to bed, right? LOL…
Here are some pictures from last week’s storm damage around the area.

Thursday was a long day – it was a good one; just a long one also. The day began with a clogged kitchen sink as I did the dishes that morning. I dumped in a half bottle of drain cleaner in it and headed out the door. We started off warm – about 80 degrees as we headed into work that morning. There was still some low-\level flooding around the area but it has receded quickly. I had a fast morning then picked up Ann and we met Matt across town at a new Mexican restaurant *(to /us) called Sabor de la Vida. It was really good! We especially liked their chips and three kinds of salsa they give you (they were all zesty and the one was re
ally hot!). It was good to catch up with Matthew. He says his online class is a lot of work with many new concepts. He got his car in the shop, finally. Later, we would hear from him that the transmission repair is covered under warranty (praise God!). The problem is that the part is backordered from Ford. He has Barney up in Carmel to drive if needed but is hoping to get a loaner from the dealership (can’t say that I blame him). That minivan is great to drive in the winter, but not so much in the Indiana summers… Abby drove the truck to work then she & Gigi went to North Vernon for a work and wound up doing a little shopping afterward. She was so excited to tell us about the deals that she and Gigi got at this one store! 😊 But the story of the day was that it was Luke’s 18th birthday! It’s hard to believe that our little baby is already a “grown-ass adult” – as Abby is prone to say. It was unfortunate that all we did for him that day was wake him before we went to work and say happy birthday. We did let him open up his cards from his grandparents and Phyllis & Dick. Luke did some stuff at the station with Abby & Sandy and recorded a new station promo. She had one from like ten years ago and it was funny to play the two back-to-back and hear how much he’s changed! He met up with his team at the school and they headed down south for their first football action of the year. Matt brought us our bleacher seats, umbrellas and lawn chairs that I had left in the back of Barney. So, we transferred all the goods, said our good-byes and returned to work for a couple hours. Ann & I were glad we were driving the Ford – it’s so comfortable. Our GPS re-routed us and allowed us to miss the wreck on I-65 that the kids’ bus got stuck in. So, we ended up beating them…in fact, they were about 20 minutes late to the scrimmage. New Albany has a good program with good coaching. Their kids were really fast and they torched us several times – including TDs on the first three possessions. Luke played middle linebacker on defense and both guard and wide receiver on offense. He played about 90% of the varsity plays. They did a split field with varsity running on one end and JV on the other. Some kids ran back and forth but it was kind of nice to keep the kids going – they got in a lot more reps this way. After about two and a half hours, they wrapped up as the sun was setting. We grabbed food via the McDonald’s drive through on our way home. It was a good drive home and we made pretty good time. The kids stopped to eat there too. I’m glad we beat them there!! Luke wound up staying the night at Oakley’s house. Ann and I sat down to watch a show and fell asleep, of course. We have lots of social media pictures to share this week.

Friday was another long day. Ann & I got Dunkin on our way to work that morning, as has become tradition. I dropped her off downtown at her office and drove over to Columbus. That’s the second time in three weeks! I worked in my new boss’ office, setting up a dual monitor system as well as adding printers to his computer. I happened to look up at one point and saw several staff out on the front lawn and realized that we had an elopement! So, I ran out to see what I could do and wound up grabbing a van and drove next door to Ivy Tech, where the staff had corralled the resident. The police showed up moments later and helped us to get the resident calmed and chose to ride back to the facility in the squad car (heck, if given the choice, I would’ve too – how cool!?). When we got him back inside, there was another incident occurring and I helped out on that one as well. By the time I finished up on the unit, two hours had passed and it was time for lunch! Vic, Justin & I tried to go to Chick Fil-A but it was overwhelmingly busy so we drove out to the other side of town and wound up at McAllister’s. I lover their sandwiches and iced tea… By the time we got back, I finished up in Justin (the other one)’s office and finally got upstairs and turned on my computer. I was only on it for about 15 minutes and it was already time to head downstairs and work on the unit. Justin and I worked the 200 unit on 2nd shift again, as we are still way behind on staff and had a couple out this week for various reasons on top of that. I really hope that with the end of the additional unemployment benefits ending that we can start getting people that want to work again! As it was, Justin & I had a great shift. The girls were awesome and we kept them busy and rewarded their good behaviors with special privileges, which they really enjoyed. 😊 Meanwhile, Abby picked up Ann at work and ran her out to Burney for her monthly scrapbook weekend with her girlfriends. She then went on to her friends’ house to spend the afternoon and evening with them before coming back home. Luke & Brayden met up with Ann and Abby, earlier in the day for lunch. Since we weren’t able to do anything with him on his big day, they went for a nice lunch at Carriage on the Square. We got home late that night and got everything put away. We caught up with Bu then we sat down to watch an episode of Rick & Morty and wound up falling asleep before the first commercial…

Ann’s alarm had us up way too early on Saturday morning. We got up and got dressed then drove to St. Paul to get goodies from Lori at Wild Flour bakery. We were shocked to see that the population had quadrupled that morning as the town was inundated with bikers – not the gang type but the cyclists with the funny helmets and tight pants. Apparently, this is the weekend where they drive through this area on their tour across America each year. Luke got up that morning and went to work at Hibbett’s. When he came back home that afternoon, he went to his room where he fell asleep within a couple minutes and slept until the early evening. I dropped Ann off in Burney and came home, loaded up Betty White and headed over to Mom & Sandy’s house to mow & trim on another hot / humid day. When I finished in the yard, I gave the girls their pastries, grabbed a bottle of water and visited for a couple minutes. Afterward, I came home and worked in our yard. In total, I logged a little over three miles of walking exercise. It was so freaking hot that afternoon that the sweat wouldn’t stop running into my eyes, nearly popping out my right contact a half dozen times. I even stopped twice for water breaks for Delilah (my helper) and I. On top of the heat, I got a little sunburned as well. When I finished, I went to Walmart to get our weekly supplies (didn’t even shower, so I fit right in!). Abby went up to New Castle to visit with Garrett and attend his sister’s graduation party at the city park. I got cleaned-up and sat down at the desk to write out this pay period’s bills as I grabbed a bite to eat. It wasn’t long before Ann was calling that she was ready to be picked-up. When I went to put her stuff in the car, I realized I had forgotten to take out all the chairs and stuff that Matt brought us from the van. She had several pieces (does she even use all that stuff??) but we made it work. After we got everything moved in and put away, I fixed my desk drawer and filed all the bills I paid earlier. Gail & Gary came back from New Castle and ran to the store for us. Ann prepped dinner and the kids & I grilled pork chops while enjoying a cocktail and some porch time. Ann had roasted veggies and potato wedges to go with her delicious pork chops. Abs picked up two fifths of Absolut Lime to mix with 7-Up Zero and a splash of black cherry Ice – yum! I think we had four or five rounds of those drinks as we played three games of cut-throat Sorry! It was pretty competitive to say the least. Abby won one and I won two. Gary got second all three times! Luke went out on a date in Shelbyville that evening then came home late. He drove us to Taco Bell late that night / morning and I wound up falling asleep watching Rick & Morty in the living room. I think I woke up sometime around five AM and made my way to the bed… Here are some pictures of recent additions to my Hot Wheels collection.

We all enjoyed sleeping in on a sunny Sunday morning. It was another scorcher that saw temps stretch all the way up to about 90 but with the humidity, it was well into the triple digits. We did our best to stay inside, keep cool and take it easy. We slowly got up and did our weekly household chores. I picked up our mess from last night while Ann slept a little while. After she got up, I did a couple loads of laundry and dishes while Ann made us egg, bacon & cheese croissants for all of us. Luke had to go into work at Hibbett’s after breakfast. Gary & Gail retreated to Bu’s room to nap for several hours. Ann read while I watched the Pocono NASCAR race (the 1st of 2 this weekend for the cup guys). Kyle Larson was going for four straight wins – something only the greats have done, like Waltrip, Earnhardt, Gordon, Johnson, etc. It was exciting to watch him battle to get the lead in the closing laps only to see him blow a tire in the last lap and hit the wall. No history today, Mr. Larson… Afterwards, Ann & I began binge-watching the new (and final) season of Bosch on Prime Video. It is the seventh season, so they’ve had a good run… We turned it off after three or four episodes and flipped on the 2nd cup race at the Tricky Triangle. It was another crazy finish as Kyle Busch won with a car whose transmission was stuck in fourth gear! Matt came home at just about the same time as Mom & Sandy and Dee, Jamie & Grace arrived as well. Ann ordered Papa John’s pizzas for dinner, which was about a half hour late…but well worth the wait. Afterward, we had cake and ice cream and sang a rousing rendition of the Birthday Song to him in classic death-march style. Afterward, Luke opened his presents and we chatted for a while before everyone left. And when I say everyone left…literally everyone left except Ann & I. Matt went back up to Carmel in Barney to get ready for the first day of his new job tomorrow. Abby went to Franklin in Tonya to stay the night with sorority sisters to get ready for her job interview tomorrow. Luke went out to the YMCA to workout. The dogs were wiped out and were both asleep within 20 minutes of everyone leaving. Ann & I cleaned up the house then settled down to watch a few DVR’d shows (the season finales of Clarice, I’ll Be Gone in the Dark and a heartbreaking Blacklist) before calling it a week and turning in to get some rest before we start it all over again tomorrow…

Next up is our Waybac segment which continues to feature Dee’s digital camera pictures from 2005. Here’s what we have this week: March – Matt’s birthday; June – Luke’s birthday; July – Dee’s new house, 4th of July, Grace’s birthday and Sandy’s birthday; November – Thanxmas Day; and December – Owens family Christmas Eve.

We wrap up with our video segment, which features one new home movie this week as well as several from around the internet.

And that does it for this week’s episode of the Scheu Family Blog. Thanks for keeping up with us this time out and we’ll catch up with you again next time. Until then, have a good one and stay safe out there. We miss ya, Mom.
Later, Scheu
