Remember at The Prom that Night…

What a busy time of year this is for us! It is a bittersweet time as well. Not only is it a celebration of achievements we’ve made but it’s also the end of an era for us. It’s a happy time and yet sad at the same time. Matt came down to see us this weekend. He has been busy with two jobs this week. We were unable to make it up to see Taylor’s big day, but she graduated from U Indy again – this time, from their master’s program…way to go, T-Bug! Abby continues to speed towards the finish line at Franklin. She had lots of tests this week and has many more to come the next two weeks before graduation – wow! Luke had a big week with Senior Night for the track & field team and then all the pomp and circumstance of his Senior Prom and then After-Prom. Ann had a busy week, seeing her friends for a little while and then leading her team into her final After-Prom. She’s done now and happy to be passing the reigns on to the next generation. She definitely left it in a better place than when she took over. The school and kids will miss her touch on this annual event. I kept busy at work, of course, this week and then spent my exercise time playing frisbee golf and yard work. It was because of Luke’s prom that I missed my workout goal, finishing just short with 14 miles of walking. I played 99 holes of disc golf this week, between Columbus and Greensburg. I was hoping to hit Batesville as well, but we simply ran out of time this weekend. Spring has sprung! Everything is in bloom – and with it, our seasonal allergies are kicking our butts as well. The grass is growing faster than I can keep it mowed but not quite as fast as those damn dandelions…which are everywhere! There are vibrant colors everywhere with lots of purple and pink flora. Is it just me or are there a lot more of it…or maybe I’m just noticing it more…or possibly the colors are more vivid this year due to all the precip this spring? Whatever the cause, it has been a great week as we were able to open up the house and enjoy the cool temperatures. On top of all the prom stuff going on, it was also Mother’s Day. It gave me the chance to talk with all the ladies in my life this week, including Barb, Lynn, Maryann & Sandy. The kids came all came home to spend time with their momma as well this weekend, as we celebrated Ms. Ann. This is always the time of reflection for me as well. It is Week 19 and this was always the start of the period of the year where we used to spend more time with Mom. Starting with Mother’s Day, going to the Sand Pebble, then having her birthday and anniversary in the next few weeks; this was always a time of great joy and still brings a smile to my face as I think about her while writing this now. She would be so proud, if she could see her grandchildren now… Hello again and welcome back to the Scheu Family Blog.

It was back to work and school on Monday morning. We had a pit stop at the dentist office before we left town. Although she didn’t have any cavities, she does have to return for a procedure. I surprised her with Dunkin when she got back to the car and headed on over to Columbus. It was another lovely morning but it was a typical Monday. While Ann had a packed morning and worked the front desk in the afternoon, I spent my morning catching up on paperwork. After our Flash Meeting, Justin, Vic & I went to lunch at China Buff and then we ran into Rural King to get yard stuff. For me, it was weed killer, grass seed and some other stuff to help get back control of my yard. I did some IT stuff in the afternoon and then got things prepped for tomorrow, which I’ll switch my focus to finance and purchasing. Justin & I went out to frisbee golf course a block up from the facility and played 9 rounds. I beat him by 2 strokes, 31-29. He left on his new motorcycle afterward while I played another round. This time I shot a 27, giving me a 56 for 18 holes. I picked up Ann, who was on a conference call for After-Prom our entire ride home. I dropped her off and went out to the park to play more frisbee golf. I played another 18 holes – 9 from the front tees and 9 from the back tees. I equaled my PR with another 46 (22 & 24 again). Luke had track practice after school then coached little league out near me at the ball diamonds in the park. After he got showered, he went out to Oakley’s house for a few hours. I was happy to find that days’ mail call had another golf disc (the Whale) and another Hot Wheels car, which had been backordered off the Red Line Club. We relaxed with the dogs and watched several DVR’d shows. I backed up all the new photos and videos I culled for this week’s blog entry and began the process of editing over 800 images and clips from this week. We had a find-your-own dinner night and as she read a little and napped in her chair, I ordered flowers for Maryann / Sandy as well as Lynn & Barb for Mother’s Day. Ann will have to wait until Sunday when the kids and I will do what we do every year – cram into Betty White and go find something unscripted. ???? Here are pictures from Luke’s track meet last week in Franklin.

It was raining when we commuted back to Columbus on Tuesday morning. It was supposed to rain all day and night, but thankfully that forecast was not accurate. The rain tapered off and the day turned out to be a lovely day. I spent the day working on finance and purchasing, closing April and beginning May. The day went really fast and I was hoping to play some frisbee golf, but we didn’t have time for that; instead, I picked up Ann and we headed to Senior Night for Luke and the Pirates. It was likely one of our last times at Shriver Field…at least the next time we go back, it will probably be without a child in the school – the first time in 12 years. It was different than all of the other Senior Nights we’d been to…sure, they were all sad as it was the final chapter in each child’s book…but this one was not like the others. I found myself a little angry; maybe bitter. Perhaps it was denial and this was just a stage? Either way, it hit me like a ton of bricks. I don’t really even remember much of it, to be honest. I know Mom and Sandy came out to support Luke (and us!) and I even enrolled the aid of one of Luke’s teammates (thanks, Elliott!!) to shoot video for me. Mom & Sandy took some pictures for us, which was cool. But the rest of the family couldn’t make it – another sign that things are changing. If you know me, you know I don’t do well with change. I like things to stay the same and this whole scene just smacked me in the head. Afterward, we said goodbye to Gma & Gigi and headed over to the discus field. The Pirates hosted both North & South Decatur for the annual County Meet. Whoever won each event was crowned the County Champ for 2022. Luke was trying a little too hard to win on Senior Night and wound-up scratching on all four of his throws, unfortunately. ? Next, we moved over to the shotput pits. I am happy to report that Ann did NOT fall during her final visit to Shriver Field! LOL!! As the meet went on, the sun disappeared behind large, black clouds and it got really windy. It interfered with the discus as it was right in their faces, but at shot, it was at their back. Luke scratched on his first attempt. But with each concurrent throw, he went further and further. His last throw was over 47’ and was good enough to win! So, Luke has bragging rights in the county for this year!! Way to go, little buddy! We signed him out and took him to dinner to celebrate Senior Night. Of course, he chose El Reparo. It did not disappoint – especially the margarita I had. It helped me to relax and de-stress. By the time we left, I felt much better about the evening. We got home and settled in, changing into our comfy clothes and watched a couple DVR’d shows to close out the evening. I made it through the first but didn’t see the first commercial break of the next one. And when I went on to bed, I was out in record time – wiped out from our big day…

Wednesday was a little chilly, which was fine by me. It was overcast and breezy all day and night, never getting much above the sixty-degree mark. It was national Star Wars Day, as it was “May the Fourth (Be With You)??? – LOL. It was another busy day at work for us. Ann pulled double duty by leading the work at her office while manning the front desk – not an easy task. Meanwhile, we had three vendors in-house that day at my facility. We started with our sprinkler vendor, who conducted our quarterly inspection as well as installed two new heads, as requested by the local fire marshal. We also had in a sub-contractor to look at our milk machine, which was not keeping proper temp. And then we also had JCI in to do our annual fire extinguisher inspection. Vic & I snuck out for a late lunch of delicious fish at the Ye Olde Fish House. It was so good that I had to have seconds! After work that afternoon, I hit the frisbee golf course, across ad o the street from work. I played 18 holes and threw a 56 with back-to-back 28s. I picked up Ann and told her about a conversation I had with Robby and Sharon earlier. One of the units during Week 19 is coming on the market this week. They had insider knowledge and wanted Ann & I to consider buying it so that we could join them down at the Sand Pebble every year. The price is certainly right; so, Ann & I are seriously considering moving forward with the purchase. We’ve got a couple days to think it over before we need to make a decision. But I think it could be really cool… When we got back to town, I dropped Ann off at Wings & Rings, where she met up with her friends for dinner and a drink. I went on to the park to play another 18 holes of disc golf. I shot a 50 with a 23 on the front tees & 27 from the back ones. My game was off in all three phases as I tried to break-in new discs. In Columbus, I tried throwing my Destroyer (a distance driver) on several tee shots. I didn’t count them, just wanted to experiment with it. I obviously don’t know how to throw it consistently. My throws with my Leopard discs consistently out-drove the Destroyer disc. There was one exception: on the 9th hole, I threw that thing close to 400 yards! It wasn’t super accurate as I it the back side of the building that you throw around and it bounced off it and fell about 20’ short of the pin! But it was pure luck… In Greensburg, I really worked on using my pink Shark disc (which didn’t go so well) and in both locations, I tried a new putter / approach disc, called a Whale. I really struggled with it, so I’m not sure I’ll be using it again for a while. The geese have been spawning for a couple weeks out there and there were babies in a couple places as well as momma geese hunkered down on their eggs. The problem was that they were smack dab in the middle of the fairways. When I threw near them, they weren’t too happy, to say the least. The city has to do something about that goose population because their crap is everywhere out there, which is not only gross but also not very hygienic. While I was playing, Abby texted Ann & I that she was headed up to Indy for a concert. They saw a guy named Leon Bridges. Although I had never heard of him, I’m sure it would be a great time, because let’s face it – live music is always awesome! Luke came home after school and track practice to gather tools then went out to do some yard work with Coach Harris. Luke applied for the fire department that day (or maybe the day prior), which is really exciting. Luke came home for a minute to put stuff away then went to Columbus to pick up new clothes at Kohls and then grab dinner at Chipotle. I was planning on mowing that night, but by the time I got home, I was tired and sore. So, I just got changed and chilled-out the rest of the night. I did enjoy another great mail call with four new Hot Wheels and my last new disc. This is a really nice disc that I got on sale – it is a pro disc called the Pig. I can’t wait to try it out! That night, Ann & I watched a couple DVR’d shows and fell asleep – shocker! ???? Here are random pictures from our recent adventures.

On Thursday, it rained on and off again all day. It was a slower day at work, thankfully. It allowed me to catch up on the stuff that fell by the wayside during this busy week. It also allowed Vic & I to go to Arni’s for lunch. It’s tough to beat their pizza and an Arni’s Jr salad…mmm… I had a couple meetings in the afternoon and finished up some paperwork before calling it a day and heading out to play a couple rounds of disc golf. It drizzled on me a few times and as I was finishing the 18th hole, it began raining pretty hard. The weather definitely had an impact on my game as I threw a 59 (29 on the front 9 and a 30 on the back). I tried out my new “Pro Pig??? putter, which was great – even in the rain. Once I got the hang of it, I really liked it. I picked up Ann and we ran a couple errands and stopped for a Blizzard at DQ. She got the one with pecan & caramel turtles while I opted for the one with Drumsticks and peanuts – yum! It was raining pretty good when we got home, which washed out any hope of throwing a round of golf at the park that night. Instead, we came in and got our comfy clothes on and chilled in the living room with the dogs. Luke was in and out, running around then disappeared into his room and left his laundry in the washer for us to finish as he sacked out early. We binge-watched a new series on HBO called The Staircase. It was a slow developing the plot, so we’ll see if it gets any better. Ann fell asleep and so I flipped over to Paramount + to watch the new Star Trek series called Strange New Worlds. It was actually really good and look forward to the rest of the series. I saw where the new season of Picard came out, so I need to catch up on it as well. I had nodded off a couple times earlier but instead of going to bed, I stayed up and then I was wired. I had to force myself to go to bed that night. I tried to wake up Annie when I went to bed, but she didn’t move…not sure how long she slept out there on her chair that night…

We were up early again on Friday morning. We did our typical thing that day – hit Dunkin, drop off Ann at her downtown office while I ran a couple errands then returned to the house. I brought home my computer just in case the weather was nasty since the forecast called for rain and storms all day. However, after a brief shower, it actually got pretty nice. Granted, there wasn’t much sun, but it did stay dry enough for me to mow that morning. The dandelions are out of control, which is why Vic & Justin helped me buy some stuff at Rural King earlier this week to take care of that. Although I had planned to work in the yard this weekend, I forgot all about it being Prom and Mother’s Day weekends, so that will have to wait for another day. Although it wasn’t hot, it was certainly humid and I got pretty sweaty. I got cleaned-up and then filed some papers that I’d been putting off for a week and then picked up Annie from work. We ran another couple errands then went to lunch at Carriage on the Square. They were so busy that we waited for about 30 minutes for our food. We got it to go and ordered 4 pints of their ice cream: M&Ms, Brown Sugar Pop Tarts, Cinnamon Toast Crunch & Tiramisu. I can’t wait to try them all! ???? We watched a couple shows and then ran another errand for After-Prom. By the time Luke got home from school and track, he barely had enough time to get cleaned-up and changed before he was ready to head back out the door. While he was showering, Lisa (Drayden’s mom) dropped off her 2020 Camaro Convertible for him to use that weekend! Ann ironed his clothes and off he went. He & Sophie had a quadruple-date that night with his buddies Brayden, Kayden, Matthew and their dates. He drove up to Fogo de Chao for a very nice dinner. I’m jealous; I took my date to a place just around the corner from us, on Stone Lake – LOL! But I think we went on the actual day of Prom, in full attire. I kind of like the idea of splitting it up over two nights, to be honest. And to be able to go eat without all the dressing up – nice! We had a quiet night with the dogs that evening, watching the Law & Order trilogy and couple DVR’d shows and then streamed a couple more episodes of Ozark, resting up from our busy day and getting ready for an even busier weekend!

The dogs had me up early on Saturday morning. Luke & Cayden (who spent the night here) slept in for a few hours then got up and went to work out at the Y. Luke then detailed the Camaro then came home to get ready. Ann & I ran a few After Prom errands that morning then I dropped her off at home to nap while I went to Mom & Sandy’s house in Betty White to mow & trim. I talked with her for a few minutes as well as Jamie & Sandy then went on my way. My plan was to grab lunch at BK, go Hot Wheels hunting downtown and then play some frisbee golf. I ate and got in a few holes of frisbee golf and then Luke called me. He was in a panic and a bit of a huff – stressed out for Prom. He needed me to go to the store…like now. So, I tried to quickly finish my round of golf and then just stop at 9. But, of course, I tried to hurry and that led to mis-throws and I had to go into the bushes twice to find my discs, which only slowed me down. I went out and got his hair product that he had to have and then brought it back as quickly as I could. It wasn’t exactly what he wanted, but it was as close as they had and it was the only one of its kind. But it was used!! ? There were finger trails in it and everything – gross! We got ready and helped Luke get all gussied-up and then we went out to pick up Sophie. Luke drove the Camaro and Ann had to ride with him and I followed in Black Betty. We met her parents and they were very nice and their home and property were beautiful. We got a few pictures of the kids and then talked with the parents for a while before letting the kids get on to the next place and we came back home. Luke and Sophie met up with friends at two (maybe three?) other places for group pictures. Instead of following them around this year (as we’ve done in the past), we met up with Abby at home and then went out to eat at ElRep and had a couple margaritas to help mellow out the day. We sat in the bar and took our time, enjoying time with our little Bu before coming home for a few minutes (Ann wanted to change and pick up all the stuff for After Prom while Abby did another load of laundry) and then drove over to the elementary school to watch Walk-Ins at Prom that night. We were a little saddened to see that Mr. Holland wasn’t the emcee of the event for the first time since I’ve been coming out to see these things. Instead, it was Mr. Messer, who was pretty cool in his sequined, neon blue suit and top hat. When Luke walked in with Sophie, he was announced as simply, “Scheumann??? by Mr. Messer – LOL! We watched about a hundred kids walk in then decided to take off. There was still a line of cars all the way out to the road and wound around the corner to the high school parking lot, but we saw most of Luke’s friends enter the event. Abby & I dropped off Annie off at After Prom (it was held off-site for the first time in a very long time) and then came home to enjoy a little porch time that evening. We played a game of Scrabble, had a fire and enjoyed a couple drinks, drinking a bottle of Blue Chair Bay coconut rum with a splash of cherry Ice – yum! ???? Luke came home about midnight to change and then headed out to After Prom before ending up at Oakley’s house, where he spent the night. Meanwhile, Abs and I moved indoors after the fire died and whooped her butt in Scrabble. We watched a couple episodes of Rick & Morty before falling asleep. She slept in Ann’s chair and wouldn’t get up when I went on to bed…which was a good thing, since Ann came home around 3 or 4 and didn’t have a key! Thankfully, Abby heard her and let her in, because I never even heard the doorbell… Here are pictures of recent additions to my Hot Wheels collection.

We slept in a couple hours on Sunday morning before Lola began having a conniption in her pin and finally woke me up. I did a couple things to tidy up the house before everyone got up. Matt drove down from Carmel to spend Mother’s Day with the fam. When he came in the door, the dogs were so excited to see him. That got the whole house up as Abby and Ann came out to greet Matthew. Luke wasn’t too far behind. We chatted for few minutes then Matt, Luke & I went out to run a couple errands. First, we dropped off Black Betty at Jerry’s garage so she could get new tires on her. Next, we filled up the Camaro with gas and took it back to the Shackelford’s before coming back home. While we were out, I called around to see who was open and how busy they were. I narrowed it down to Lil’ Charlie’s in Batesville or 450 N in Columbus. The kids voted and so we picked up the girls and headed over to Columbus to surprise Ann with a nice lunch at 450 N Brewery / Simmons Winery. They were absolutely packed when we got there. So, we put our name in and then hung out at the wine bar. Annie had a couple glasses of Pino while Matt, Abby & I had a glass of Cherry wine and then our fave – their Blackberry wine…yum! Once we were seated, we had some of their Drunk Totchos as well as their cheese curds with a round of beers. Well, Ann switched to Coke, but Matt had a couple of their 420 Juice Dank Nugz beers, while Abs had a Gold Dripped Sour Worms while I just had a simple American Lager. We wound up ordering their signature pizzas. We had a Chicken Bacon Ranch as well as a half Mexican and half Meat pizza. We topped it off with dessert of Reese’s cheesecake that put us over the top. We got some carryout goodies as well: Abs took home a 4-pack of RS-11, which is one of their Slushy XL beers as well as a couple bottles of wine – Blackberry Bounty and Cherry Picker. We said goodbye to Abby, who drove on back to campus while Luke drove the rest of us home. We finally told the kids our big news as we were standing out in the parking lot after lunch…we finally took the plunge and purchased a condo for Week 19. Starting in 2023, we will resume our annual visits to the coast at the Sand Pebble. A big thanks goes out to Rob & Sharon for all their help this week in getting the deal done. We can’t wait to continue the tradition for many years to come! ???? While Matt, Ann & I napped to some USFL football and NASCAR races, Luke ran around with Oakley for a while. Abby called me and said that her low oil pressure light came on as she got up to Franklin. I asked her to let it sit for a minute then check her oil to make sure that the guys didn’t screw something up when she got her oil changed last weekend. Unfortunately, she was studying that night and didn’t get to her car until after dark. ? Sure enough, it was bone dry. So, we talked about how important it was to not drive the car until she gets more oil in it and then to drive it straight to the place that changed her oil and have them to fix it whatever they messed up (loose oil pan screw or maybe a loose oil filter maybe?). Either way, I told her that she should’ve have to pay for anything…they should take care of it for her…and to call Shitty Ann if they give her any crap about it! LOL! I told her that this was just another learning experience and a part of adulting, unfortunately, and it will all work out. That evening, Ann made us cheesy Fireworks popcorn as we tried to watch the next episode of Outlander on Hulu…only to find out that last week was the season finale…boo. I did see that although there are only 8 episodes this season that there will be 16 next year, so that will eventually make up for it! Instead, we flipped on Netflix and watched the final two episodes of Ozark. It was a good way to wind down a busy week and a relaxing way to wrap up a great weekend…

Next up is our Waybac section, which continues to feature pictures from Aunt Sue, which spans six decades this week.
