We had a busy month of September, riding out the summer in style. As the third quarter drew to an end, we had a flurry of activity that kept us busy. Just when I thought we were going to slow down for a while, life has a funny way of switching things up, doesn’t it? I was kind of bummed that while I was laid up and not able to golf (more on that later), the weather was cooler and nice…but once I got back on the field afterward, it was much warmer and back up into the mid-eighties. I know here in a few weeks I’ll be wishing it was still warm once it starts getting cold. We’ve already noticed the difference at night. It used to stay light until well after 9 pm but now it’s dark by 8. We finally got to spend some time with Matt this month as he continues to enjoy life with Taylor and the cats, up in Carmel. Abby & Seth are doing well and see each other daily. She stays busy between working in Greenwood and coaching Pirateers while still making time for friends and family. Luke & Samantha are doing well, discovering life’s journey after high school. He works all the time, especially now that he has started his own business! Ann & I are finding work more stressful than it’s been in several years. We stay busy keeping up with work while still chasing after the kids. Between time with them and making time for family and friends as well as our hobbies, life after 50 is just as busy as ever – just different. Due to all the minutia this month, I only managed to get in 153 holes of disc golf while logging a dismal 14 miles of walking. Hell, I think I did more than that last January in the snow! The leaves are almost all off of the tree out front by the driveway. They cover our yard completely at this point and really need to get out and rake them before they all end up in Mr. Green’s lawn again! And the farmers are starting to harvest their fields – a sure sign that yet another year has sped past us again… Mom & Sandy, Dad & Lynn and Dad & Barb are all doing well. I wish we could spend more time with them than we do. Granted, they each have their own health issues, but they’ve earned them. I hope that Ann & I make it as long as they have one day and age as gracefully as they all have… Hello again and welcome back to the Scheu Family Blog.
During the 1st week of September, Luke took D-bug to the vet for us and found out that she had an upper respiratory infection that is making her cough and sneeze all the time…as well as worms, which is the reason she’s even skinnier than normal. He & Alex won a big bid on a project for their budding business. They also coached football practice all week and then played @ Milan where the team looked a LOT better. Granted, they still lost (0-6 on the year), but they looked cohesive and actually looked like they gave a shit. He went hunting with a couple of his DNR buddies and brought home a goose to make into fajitas! He spent time cleaning all our guns (thx bud!). He played pickleball with Seth, Abs & Sam on Sunday before going hunting again. Abs had a fast work week at Sly Fox. She coached Pirateers dance through the week to prep them for a halftime routine during the high school game. She & Seth enjoyed going to Randall’s wedding, over at the old St. Mary’s church downtown. Matt played Ann during the 1st round in fantasy football and enjoyed his first full week in his new apartment with Tay-Tay and the kitties. Ann had fun with her crew, celebrating Dan’s 60th birthday with a pitch-in and t-shirts to commemorate the event. She also flew down with her gals to their annual “staff retreat” to FLA. Although she didn’t get searched again by TSA this time, she did fall while waiting in line – that poor woman… And then her co-workers stuck an ornery shot glass (in the shape of a penis) that gave the guy doing the scans at security a chuckle! She told a couple of good stories about their adventures and it sounded like she was having a good time. I enjoyed a short week due to Labor Day (4-day weekend!!) – which meant the week was full of Fridays. We are still battling low census at work and now Covid as well. In fact, we’ve seen a lot of people getting sick all of a sudden. Here we go again… After going to (and filming) Luke’s game with Ann on Tuesday, I returned to the golf course on Wednesday. It was less humid, a little cooler and very windy – a sign of things to come that week as things finally started to cool down around here. I also played golf on Thursday and Saturday; we got together for Poker to watch TNF out at the Sunken Boat Bar. Thankfully, no one lost $100 that night! I broke even but came out way ahead with food, drink and good times. 😊 I said goodbye to Ann, early on Friday morning then must’ve turned off my alarm as I woke up a little late but started work nearly on time, there at the house. Bryan and Bob kidnapped me around 11am and took me to Bloomington for the big football game. We had so much food and drinks…and of course loud music! Bryan is a genius when it comes to this stuff and we had a big crowd around us as people came and went all day and evening long. We saw several kids we knew, which made it even cooler. Hell, we never even made it to the game! But what a great time – something I’ll never forget… Then when I got back home, Abby & I went out back to have a drink until Seth got off work then we played bowling and some cards until way too late again. On Saturday, Luke helped me to get rid of our old jumbo TV that I got from Mom & Dad years ago, when they moved down to FLA. It still worked but we never used it and it took up so much room out in the den. We grabbed lunch at Taco Bell then fixed the back door, planted flowers Ann bought this week as well as some filing and other miscellaneous stuff I’d been putting off. We had a nice fire out back and played on the Switch for a few hours. I took it easy on Sunday, enjoying sleeping in, did a few weekly household chores and then flopped on the couch to watch twelve hours of football – capped off with the Cowboys on SNF. The defense looked awesome at the start of the game amidst the heavy rain, jumping out to a big lead before the half – thanks to three turnovers and a pair of defensive TDs! They scored me more points in fantasy football than any of my other players! I started my new medicine that evening. I’m hoping it will help me with a couple health issues, so we’ll see… By week’s end, Delilah was starting to show signs of improvement. She hadn’t really been eating or drinking and had lost a lot of weight, so when she finally got her appetite back and began doing things like wagging her tail, playing with toys and running out back – we knew her meds were working for her. Here are pictures from Abby’s 24th birthday party.

The following week, Luke won the bid to do some work for Bryan. If that wasn’t big enough news, he & Al also coached the 7th grade Pirate football team to their 1st victory! He & his boys were the first Greensburg team (and only, as of this writing) to win on the new field when they beat Triton Central. It was a sweet win for Luke, given his history with that program. He picked up odd jobs throughout the week then he & Sam went to Cincy on the weekend. Abby had a quick work week. She stayed with girlfriends in Franklin one day, took a ½ day on Friday to begin her birthday weekend and had her girlfriends (Sara & Hillary) down to stay the night. We had a cookout of cheeseburgers & potato salad; had a fire, played cornhole, played some sort of drinking game that was similar to 3-Man…but with cards instead of dice, played euchre and then ended with some Wii Sports on the Switch. She & Kuyhlia coached the Pirateers, who they look better & better each week. I went up top to tape the routine & posted it on YouTube for her to share with the team. We celebrated her 24th birthday with ice cream cake & later had steak, baked potatoes & cheesy broccoli – yum! Matt said he had a good week of work then surprised us by coming down to stay the night on Friday! We always have such a great time when he’s around… Ann had an interesting work week full of possibilities that I can’t go into right now…but there may be changes coming to her future. She enjoyed a delicious chicken dinner with Amy at Stones and met with some folks to discuss her future on Friday afternoon – followed by a congratulatory lunch at BWR. I had a good week but only managed to play 3 games of golf ☹ It wasn’t all bad, as I thoroughly enjoyed spending time with friends & family in lieu of hitting the links. We attended Luke’s fball game; went to Poker Night with the boys; witnessed Abby’s Pirateers dance at halftime then had a big dinner at El Rep (where the wait staff all sang Happy Bday to her!) but my favorite time was during the late nights on Fri & Sat with the kids at the house. It really doesn’t get any better than that IMHO. Mom & Sandy got a new puppy, named Lucy. She is very sweet. The Fall Festival was that weekend but we didn’t make it again this year. And sadly, we passed another milestone as it was the 11th anniversary of Mom’s passing / memorial service. My God, it seems like 20 years since I’ve heard her sweet voice…

The following week, Luke & Alex started preparing to work on the Mesco building. They were super busy, creating their new company – an LLC called S&D. They applied for and got the business name, insurance, an accountant, applied for a company credit card and bought a bunch of equipment. He didn’t do very much at the radio station and won’t be doing much with Sandy for the next month or two – until they finish up at Mesco. I don’t think he did anything with Chad nor mow any lawns (mostly due to the drought we’re in the middle of). He did continue chasing his dream of becoming a fire fighter, making it past the first stage by getting dressed up, going to City Hall and taking the written test. He not only passed it but he got his best score yet! We are so proud of him and wish him well in the coming weeks and months on his entrepreneur adventures. He spent as much time as he could with Sammy and even stayed over at her place one night. Luke worked on his truck over the weekend, putting on a new light bar and taking out his back seat to make room for his tools. Bu had another fast week at work then she & Seth spent most of the weekend with Ann & I. They bought burgers on Friday evening and I threw them on the grill. Then they even made us an anniversary dinner of chicken & pasta called Marry Me Chicken. It was so good…. You can always tell when there’s no leftovers!! 😊 Matty & Tay-Bug continued to unpack and get used to the new apartment, hanging out with their cats and getting everything all set up. I know it’s an exciting time for them… Ann took off Monday to spend the day with me at the hospital – sounds like fun, right? She continued to explore a new life opportunity and soon she may need to make a big decision. She enjoyed spending time with friends this weekend by going to scrapbooking in Burney with Shawna and the gang. I’m fairly certain that she drove more this week than she has in the last three years! In lieu of getting gifts for each other this year, we opted for something different…but it’s a surprise, so I can’t disclose it here quite yet… As for me, it was a long week. It started off early on Monday, taking the day off to have a heart ablation performed. It was weird because I was awake the whole time. It was not a pleasant experience as he soldered my heart, but all is well. My ticker is doing great. It feels different, for sure, but I’m sure that will fade. I have new meds so it may take time for my body to adjust to all the new stuff. My groin was sore, but I was OK otherwise. Thankfully, they let me come home later that afternoon. I worked from home for the next two days because I had some trouble getting around, thanks to the puncture hole in my inner leg muscle – where they put that cath in to perform the procedure. I was able to return to work on Thursday. It was good to see all my work friends and Michelle gave me a big hug to welcome me back. That day absolutely flew by but I was bummed I couldn’t play golf. I worked from home again on Friday and called it a day, taking it easy to allow my body to heal. That was hard. I wasn’t able to play golf all week so I was chomping at the bit that weekend. After a nap on Friday afternoon, I did go out to Bryan’s house where we did some field work (practice for disc golf) for about an hour. It was a good way to get out and do a little throwing with out straining too much. However, on Saturday (our 28th anniversary!), I finally got back out there and played a quick round of 9 at the park, here in town. It wasn’t my best outing, obviously, but it felt great to be back on the course. Because we haven’t had any substantial rain in several weeks, the pond was really low. I looked to see if I could find any of my discs, but it wasn’t THAT low yet – LOL (they are pretty far out there). However, it was low enough for me to spy a couple other discs that had been lost at sea…and so I fished them out. One is just a common disc I’ll give to the kids, but the other one appears to be special. In fact, I was sort of surprised to see that they had thrown it. It turned out to be a limited-edition disc that had a real autograph of a professional disc golfer named Chandler Frye! That weekend, we played a few games with the kids and stayed up way too late, enjoying a little time around the fire on the back patio. I smoked a couple of my new Blackened cigars. They are very strong but pair nicely with whiskey, bourbon and rye (my favorite). As I mentioned, we celebrated our 28th wedding anniversary over the weekend. It’s hard to believe we’ve been together for three decades now. Hats off to Ms. Ann for putting up with my shit this long! Ann made dinner on Sunday night – a chicken, broccoli & cheese soup that really hit the spot. It was a perfect way to wrap up another fast week. Mom & Sandy came over to see me and brought homemade chocolate chip cookies to boot! DJ helped me water the trees out back again that week due to no rain. We called both sets of my parents. Dad & Barb are doing well, but Barb just got out of the hospital with the same issue that I’m having – how odd is that? Dad had hand surgery and just got back on the golf course this week also. He celebrated his 76th birthday. Dad & Lynn had some rain and wind, but otherwise didn’t have too many issues with this latest rash of hurricanes. The leaves are really starting to change and fall out of our maple trees out front. We welcomed fall this week with much cooler overnight temps…event though we continued to experience 80-degree days. Here are random pictures from our recent adventures.

During the final week of September, S&D (Scheu & Dance) were full-on painting Mesco. They quoted their second job in Batesville. They coached football and played in Batesville. Boy, they sure got screwed by the referee…the same one that has done this all his life. Still, the team continued to look good and held an 8-6 lead at halftime. Just when they were getting ready to re-take the field, a big storm rolled in. At first, it was postponed due to lightning then called due to t-storms. There was team drama again, which cost him another player. They wound up playing the 2nd half of the game the next night. We didn’t even know about it until work was ending. By then, we had already made plans and missed it. Sounds like it was for the best as the boys came out flat and lost again. Lukey spent time with Sam when she wasn’t working. He again ran the drone at the varsity football game – which was Homecoming. Abby was all work, work, work… She would stay with Seth each night then drive up to Greenwood. She had a couple late nights, holding Pirateers practices then they performed a great halftime routine at the annual GHS homecoming game vs. Batesville. We were up a little late that night after the game – but that didn’t stop her & Seth from getting up early, packing a cooler & headed up to the Franklin College Homecoming game. They tailgated in Cline Woods then went to BoJack’s & wound up spending the night with Sarah and her family. When they eventually came home the next day, they played pickleball with Luke, Sam & I. Sam & I had a huge come-from-behind victory against Bu & Seth, 12-10, after being down 1-6 and 3-10! We won the next one by ten and then we played guys v. gals and I remained undefeated on the year. Luke left and went to do a couple chores for Gma & Gigi, allowing me to play all three games. We didn’t hear much out of Maddy that week, which normally means that he was busy with work. Ann left work early on Monday for a rheumatology appointment. She worked for the final time at the Greensburg office this week on Tuesday. There is currently no plan to look for a new office over here sadly. There was yet more work drama, which made it another long week for her. Friday was just as busy, even though we worked from home that day. In the afternoon, we took the dogs to the groomer (Macy) in Westport and then grabbed a quick lunch from Paco’s (our first time since a couple guys from ElRep branched out on their own) before returning home so I could finish up working from the family room. We went to see Angie & Spencer late on Friday afternoon to discuss retirement and then went across the street for a beer out on the back patio at Link’s then ran out to get the dogs. We didn’t have much time before we headed out again – this time to the football game to watch Abby’s Pirateers perform at halftime. The game was horrible again, as Batesville crushed them 49-0 through two quarters. ☹ We split at halftime so we didn’t have to see the running clock. We took the kids out to eat at BWR afterward. Ann helped Sandy with a couple errands on Saturday and then attended the WTRE Ladies Luncheon that Sandy helped to coordinate. It was another stupid crazy week at my work. Things feel weird right now. I can’t quite put my finger on it, but everyone is pretty edgy right now, making the stress level pretty high. Our census is low due to not having enough staff and that is really what is driving everything right now, I think. We are opening the IOP program in the new building next week, so hopefully that will relieve some of it. I had a long Tuesday, getting up at 315 to run a 12° generator test all day while completing my monthly EOC rounds. I performed nearly a dozen different annual requirements that day! Brent & I had New Hire orientation the next day but I managed to finally get out and play golf at Donner that afternoon. We played poker at Rick’s house on Thursday and everyone made it for once…and then some – we had like nine or ten guys but it was so much fun! After we attended the varsity football game on Friday, I was up a little late with Seth, enjoying Flashlights (our drink of choice) and wound up sleeping in late on Saturday. I did some stuff around the house, ran some errands and then played golf at the park. I found another disc in the pond. With it so dry, the pond is very low and now I’ve found three discs in three days! I worked on dehydrating the last batch of peppers from Phyllis and they turned out really good. I was exhausted from the week and fell asleep early on Saturday night, getting around twelve hours of sleep. I got up early and crushed the peppers out back (I ran the dehydrator overnight on the back porch), filling about a third of the big shaker I use. Of course, I had to sample them on my eggs that morning and boy are they hot! 😊 We set our fantasy football lineups on Sunday morning and turned on the games early (there was a game in London that morning). The Colts lost a thriller and the Cowboys enjoyed a blowout, handing Belichick the worst loss of his coaching career. Despite the Cowboys again having an amazing game, I wound up losing to Luke and now dwell by myself in the basement of our division. It was such a fast week but a great way to put a cap on a busy month and summer. We have lots of social media pictures to share this time out.

Next up is our Waybac segment. This week’s batch includes two folders from 2001: a large group of pix from New Years Eve as well as a handful from a sit down at the now defunct Sears Portrait Studio in Columbus.

We wrap up with our video segment, which includes one new montage home movie from this month, a few football videos of Luke’s team as well as several from around the internet from channels that I follow.
And that wraps up this month’s edition of the Scheu Family Blog. Thanks for keeping up with us this time out and we’ll catch up with you next time. Until then, have a good one and stay safe out there. We miss you dearly, Momma…
