Life will not Break your Heart…It’ll Crush It

We’ve had another fast week speed past us since we last touched base. Matt wrapped up his wrestling season in Zionsville this week. He had a long week of teaching special ed and if that wasn’t enough, he also landed a new part-time job as well. Ann & I went to the last wrestling event of his inaugural coaching year this weekend where he was elated to the highest of highs only to have his heart broken in to a thousand pieces by the days’ end. Abby had a full week of classes in Franklin. She continues to be active on campus and is looking to get even more involved next year. We got to see her briefly this weekend when she came home to spend the night with us. Luke suffered an injury setback this week that initially put his spring season in doubt but seems to be doing much better as I write this entry on Sunday night. He was again a two-sport athlete this week but what we were most proud of was his accomplishments off the playing field and in the classroom. Ann returned to work this week after being laid up in the hospital last week. She is doing great and if you met her today, you’d never know how bad off she was just a week ago. I had a good week. Although I didn’t lose any weight…I didn’t gain any either. I fell short of my exercise goal, logging twelve and a half miles of walking this week. It was good to spend time with all three kids this week. We finally got everyone’s school pictures in – it was like pulling teeth this year with these kids. Weather-wise, March definitely came in a like a lamb this first week of the month…which means there’ll probably be hell to pay by the end of the month… Hello again and welcome to the latest installment of the Scheu Family Blog.

We had a wet start to the week as it rained pretty much all day on Monday. Ann tried to sleep in but was awakened by her phone and decided to just stay up and do some work from home. She was feeling better and looked 100% better than she did just 48 hours ago. I drove into work in the rain and went the front way because Black Betty was having one her bad days. She is always like this after going to the shop. It started with Acra’s but has continued with Jerry – I’m not sure what they do to that poor thing – LOL! It did fine about 3/4 of the way there and did good on the way back home and would do better each day as the week progressed. I had a fast day at work. It helped that Abby came to see me. She picked up a couple Rxs and then we went out to lunch with Justin to ChiPi. She looked all fancy; dressed up for National Pin Day. Later, it dried just long enough for me to walk a 5K outside on the airport property on a decent afternoon in the 50s. There was an occasional mist during my workout but it was no big deal. As I hit the three-mile mark, it started to become a more regular drizzle so I wrapped it up and went to the car. I received a call from Luke that afternoon. He said he had good news and bad news. The good news was that he had a new bench max – 205! The bad news was that as he was doing his power clean, he hurt his wrist – pretty good. It was swollen and had limited mobility. He toughed it out through football practice then ran home to get some ibuprofen and show Doctor Mom. He went on to baseball practice, trying to play through the pain; but they shut him down. He iced it and the coaches said it looked broken. He was a little freaked-out, but we encouraged him to continue icing it and stay on ibuprofen and see Kevin in the morning (the trainer). I ran by the doctor’s office to pick-up a return to work notice for Ms. Ann. She “made” Papa John’s pizza for dinner and we watched our DVR’d shows until we fell asleep. Luke even joined me after Annie went to bed and then we both fell asleep on the couches – LOL! Here are random pictures from our recent adventures.

I had another wet commute into work on Super Tuesday. Luke’s wrist was still sore, but the swelling had subsided a bit and he had a little more mobility. He took more ibuprofen and went to see the trainer that afternoon. Ann rested one more day before she returns to work tomorrow. She looked good and said she was feeling nearly 80% back to her usual self. Luke called me and was excited about the news that he had made the 800 Club! His bench max was 205, his Power Clean max was 225 and his squat max was 375! His next goal is to make the 900 club by the time football season begins. Not bad at all for only his second year of weightlifting! Way to go, little buddy! I had a fast day at work then walked outside again on a sunny afternoon in the 50s but with a stiff breeze. I was supposed to meet up with Bryan as he waited for Drew to take flying lessons, but they got cancelled and I got no love. LOL. Luke saw Kevin today, who said it looked like a sprain and told him to lay low today and check back tomorrow. However, when he went to football practice, Coach Moore shut him down for two weeks to make sure that he didn’t do anything to further injure it – no lifting, no football and no baseball. Ann made tuna salad for dinner – yum! We enjoyed our dinner while huddling under blankets with the dogs to watch some TV on the big screen as the temps dipped that night.

Luke was up early and out the door for Leadership Academy before school on Wednesday morning. It was Ann’s first day back to work in over a week. She was greeted back to the work week with a lovely sunrise and a dry commute over to Columbus. We had a fast morning then went to Jami’s for haircuts. I dropped off Ann so she could enjoy her office’s pitch-in lunch while I met Justin at Chi-Buff. I had a busy afternoon then walked three miles before picking up Annie and coming home a little early. We were only home long enough for her to change and then she was off again, headed to dinner with her friends at The Beach. Luke had a good day then went to wrestling practice at the junior high – even though he’s not supposed to be doing any physical activity with that wrist! He said it feels fine, though; so, we’re not sure what to think. He got cleaned-up and went out to Kam’s house for the evening. That allowed me a quite night with the dogs, watching the season 12 finale of Dr. Who, The Curse of Oak Island and the Purdue game from last night – when they upset #18 Iowa on the road! We have lots of social media pictures to share this week.

Thursday was a fast day. After doing a few things around the office in the morning, Justin, Vic and I went to North Vernon to pick up supplies and then had lunch at their China Buffet. It put our local one to shame. After an equally fast afternoon, I wrapped things up and went for a 5K walk on a gorgeous afternoon. Ann had a long day at work with all sorts of challenges that ended with the police coming! Luke had a fast day at school then went to football and baseball practice after the coaches decided to allow the boy made of rubber to return to action because his wrist was feeling much better. He ran around with his friends then came home to shower and headed out to Oakley’s house to “study??? for Chemistry with his PS4 in-hand…uh huh… I ran to Walmart to get supplies because we were out of like everything. When I got home, Ann made Fireworks popcorn for dinner and we fell asleep binge-watching Grace & Frankie on Netflix. That evening, Matt texted us and told us that they had won their final regular season dual meet, defeating Hamilton Southeaster, 81-21. They end the season with a 13-5 record – not too shabby for his first season. Way to go, pal! He will wrap up the wrestling season when they host a tourney this weekend.

I was hopeful that I could sleep in on Friday since I had the day off but the dogs had a different idea. So, I got up and paid the bills on a cold, snowy morning. Ann got up and went in to work with her Nurse Practitioner, who I’m sure drove them to coffee at Dunkin or something. ???? It wasn’t long after she left that I received a call from work. The fire alarm was going off, the fire department was in the building and water was coming out of the ceiling in one of our classrooms. We quickly put together a plan and together we got everything done and restored to normal. I am so proud of my team – especially Vic & Justin – who took care of everything today – I owe them big time! I picked up Annie from her downtown office and we went to lunch at Wings & Rings. We enjoyed our lunch (with a ton of bleu cheese!) and then to top it off, some kind and “anonymous??? person bought our lunch (Thanks Kristin!!). We came home and took naps until Abby came home from college. Luke stopped by momentarily after school (his final day of the first 9 weeks and the last day before Spring Break) then headed off to Connersville with his pack of girlfriends to support the basketball team in the opening round of Sectional play. They followed the bus and got there a couple hours before the game actually started. They had a good showing in the cheer block and we found out that night that they had made it to the top three on Dave Calabro’s (NBC) Operation Basketball school spirit contest. The winner gets bragging rights and the coveted Spirit Award. The Pirates won to move to the championship tomorrow night. We visited with Bu for a while then took her to dinner at El Reparo. Afterward, we dropped off Ann, picked up Molly and went to Rural King to get a new toy and treats for the dogs. We came back and watched the latest Terminator movie on the big screen. Luke had Oakley over to play PS4 and spend the night. That evening, Abby told us that she had not gotten the RA position at school. There was only one position and it went to an upper classman. However, she did accept the backup position. So, if a spot opens up, she’ll be the next in line. She was excited to tell us that she had applied to be a Rho Gamma – a mentor for young women entering the sorority system as they progress through the rush process. She is pretty excited at the prospect of helping introduce incoming Freshmen to Greek Life. She’s been doing stuff like this since her junior high days, so it’d be right up her alley… She has to interview for the position next week, but I’m sure they’ll love her. Here are pictures of recent additions to my Hot Wheels collection.

Ann & I were up early on Saturday morning to head up to Zionsville West Middle School, where they hosted the annual NSC Championships. It was a gorgeous day and we enjoyed our drive up and back, enjoying the warmer weather and a day full of that sweet sunshine. Matt had his team fired-up and ready to go. I thought they wrestled very well, overall. He had four champions (132, 138, 152 and 195) and several that placed in the top four positions. As the tourney wound down it was clear that the overall team scores were very close between Matt’s Z-West team and Brownsburg East. Zionsville West has never won the Northwest Suburban Conference championship before. After the tourney ended, we all waited around to hear the results. The announcer built up the drama as he counted down the scores and then ended it with, “…winning by half a point…Z-West!!!??? The players and coaches went wild, jumping, running and shouting at the top of their lungs! It was great to see Matt and his team so happy. The place went wild. All the players and coaches posed for photos with the trophy and smiles and love abounded. We waited while the team cleaned-up the gyms (they also had a JV tourney in the auxiliary gym). Then Matt disappeared for a while then came back from talking with coaches and officials that ran the tourney with heartbreaking news…they re-tallied the points and they changed the winner to Brownsburg East. They only won when they awarded the team with numerous points for the heavyweight position – a position only they had a wrestler for. Yes, that team won the championship by counting forfeits. Since no other teams had a wrestler in this class, they received all the points (so these were not byes, as originally scored – and in my mind, rightfully designated) in the heavyweight class. I’m sorry, but if only 1 team has 1 wrestler in a weight class and they have no other competition; why would that even count? So, their coaches threw a fit and when they re-counted, Z-West was moved to second place. Matt had to pull in all his coaches and players and relate the deflating news. He was really bummed and a little pissed; so we took him out to eat to drown his sorrows and process the days’ events. We went to a really cool place called Moontown Brewing Company, located only a couple miles from the school in Whitestown. Located in a residential area in an old, renovated schoolhouse; the bar and grill featured local ales, ciders and meats. They had a smoker and a brewery in the back half of the business and cool bar and dining rooms out front. They also had some sort of stage in there somewhere as well, where they were hosting karaoke night that evening but also have live music. Although a little chilly for us to use that day, they also had a big outside patio area, where I could see us hanging out sometime in the future. Ann & I started with a cider called Fleeting Youth. I switched to their King of Troy beer while Matt – our IPA guy – went with a Cecil – their flagship IPA. They had a great assortment of appetizers that sounded amazing. We were not disappointed when we kept it simple and went with the Bavarian pretzels and fried garlic & herb cheese curds. I think we could have just had appetizers; they were so good! But their menu had a little of everything and we had to try some of it. Matt had the Nashville Hot chicken sandwich; Ann ordered their Dank Burger and I enjoyed their homemade sausage. Apparently, they rotate their stock. That week, they had a locally sourced sage sausage and it was the best I’ve ever had – even better than Dad B’s from back in the day! I hope we can go back soon so we can try more of the stuff on their menu. The only bad thing is that it’s a 90-minute drive away…but I could see us making that road trip. ???? Matt told us that he had gotten the part-time job he applied for last week. He is excited to work in the kitchen at the bar where Taylor is tending bar, called the Jailbird. I think Ann & I will have to make a road trip up there as well!! We talked for quite a while after we finished eating but eventually had to say good-bye and make our way back home. Meanwhile, Abby enjoyed sleeping in her own bed overnight before heading back to FC in the early afternoon. Oakley got up and went to work while Luke slept in. He eventually got up and went to see Grandma with Abby for a bit. That evening, he drove back to Connersville in the Hot Rod Lincoln to watch the basketball team in the Sectional Championship game. As it turned out, the Pirates won again! He was very excited and everyone came back to town to celebrate. He got to stay out a little later since he was now officially on Spring Break. He was excited to earn $20 for getting all As and Bs on his report card – something he hadn’t managed in a while. Thankfully, everyone made it safety during their travels that day. I tried to wait up for Lukey, but I fell asleep numerous times on the couch…followed by Ann waking me up numerous times due to snoring! I eventually gave it up and went on to bed while Ann waited up for our baby boy to get home…

Ann was up early on Sunday morning, thanks to the dogs. We sprang ahead as Daylight Savings Time began again. I got out of bed a little while later and began our weekly household chores. I finished writing the html code and wrote out this week’s blog entry while watching my Sci-Fi Sunday morning: classic Star Trek on MeTV, Ancient Aliens and The Unexplained. Next, I watched the Xfinity short track race in the desert on the DVR and considered watching the Purdue game I taped, too. But Matt & I already saw the end of regulation and the OT part of the game at the brewery yesterday, so its not much fun when you already know the outcome of a game (and your team loses) … Luke slept in until about noon then went out with friends on a gorgeous day. I only made it outside for a little while to check fluids in the vehicles then enjoyed napping that afternoon while Ann & I caught up on some of our favorite DVR’d shows. I watched the cup race at Phoenix in the early evening and the dogs enjoyed being outside for much of the day. Luke drove to Columbus to go roller skating with Kam and the girls but ended up skipping that and just went to Steak n Shake for dinner. Ann made buffalo chicken dip for us that evening as we wound down the week, being lazy with the dogs. We opened-up the house for the first time this year. I’m not sure how long it will last, but It was nice to get some fresh air into the house for a change. Luke ended up staying the night with Kam while Ann & I wound down the day watching American Idol and The Walking Dead / Talking Dead. It was a relaxing way to wrap up the week before we start it all over again tomorrow.

Next up is our Waybac section. It continues to feature pictures from a few random photo albums I found in the bedroom closet, late last year. We lead off this week with another batch of pix from Ann’s college photography class, circa 1990 at FC and then move on to September of 1995 where we have some great images from our wedding in Greensburg and then several more from our landmark wedding reception bash in Columbus.

Next up is our video section which includes one new home movie this week as well as several from around the internet.

And that does it for this week’s episode of the Scheu Family Blog. Thanks for keeping up with us this time out and we’ll catch up with you again next time. Until then, have a good one. We miss ya, Mom.
Later, Scheu
