Oh, What Can it Mean to a Daydream Believer and a Homecoming (King)?

We enjoyed another fast week, here at the old Scheu abode. The kids all stayed busy with work and their significant others. We were hoping to see Matt this weekend, but he and Taylor weren’t feeling very well. We did get to talk with a little on the phone and he sounded great. They wound up having to buy a new TV – Ann and I are both angry that Samsung wouldn’t take care of an 18-month-old TV and do the right thing…very disappointing. He is excited to start the wrestling season soon with his call-out coming in a couple weeks. Abby was also a little under the weather this week, missing work one day and coming to Columbus to see her doctor. We enjoyed seeing her this weekend as well, spending time with her and Will and all their friends. Luke really stepped up his work this week, not only doing his regular weekly stuff with Chad but also doing some construction and other work as well. He spent his down time working on his truck and running around with Samantha. Ann had a fast week at work, enjoyed spending a little time with friends and hanging out with her hubby this weekend. I fell just short of my exercise goal, logging about 14 ½ miles of walking while playing 12 rounds of disc golf…and losing my 10th disc. But this time, I at least didn’t throw it into the middle of a pond! It was much cooler this week, as autumn kicked into full swing. We even had the first hard frost of the year this weekend and had to cover up Ann’s mums. We attended the final high school football game at Shriver Field to support the kids and parents on Senior Night. But the big news of the week was returning to campus for homecoming at FC. We had so much fun with the kids, meeting several of Will’s Norwegian friends, setting up a big tailgate area and rooting Will on for Homecoming King! We’re not sure how many more times we’ll tailgate like this, as we don’t know Abby & Will’s future. Either way, we did it up good this year… Hello and welcome to the latest edition of the Scheu Family Blog.

It was back to work on another cool Monday morning. I spent my morning writing out work orders and getting information to my teams to prepare for tomorrow’s inspection by the state. After a meeting with the management team and an interview for the kitchen, I did a quick inventory and began ordering this month’s supplies for nursing, housekeeping and maintenance departments. When I left work, I went across the street to play 18 holes of disc golf at the Columbus Airpark. I brought in my rubber mallet to do a little maintenance to the course. They don’t have baskets on the course still, so the stakes get moved around by the mowing crew and get loose or even knocked out of the ground. So, I took a few minutes to drive around the course and firm up all the tee indicators and pins. It was a lovely afternoon in the low 70s with a cool breeze – perfect by my standards. I got to use my new (replacement) Katana disc. It’ll take me a few weeks to get it broke in. My longest drive of the day fell just short of 300’. I had fun, enjoying the weather and getting some exercise after spending most of the day on my backside. I threw a 51 (26 & 25) for the day before picking up Ann and heading home. Ann said she had a really fast day, working up front again (a common occurrence as of late) due to having folks out again. Ann was told that we were denied the dog again. This time the hold-up was the fact that our dogs weren’t current on their vaccinations. I wasn’t even aware that they were due for anything. Ann’s still in communications with the lady in charge of the rescue and is trying to work out something. Luke worked out at the YMCA but I’m not sure if he did anything else the rest of the day until Samantha came over that evening. They went to dinner at Pizza King before she went home and he went to bed. Sandy came over with Olive to play with Delilah in the backyard. I got in a new set of golf discs from Denmark called Loft discs. They were supposed to be birthday presents, but Ann let me open them and take them out to the park…but there was no way I was throwing those nice discs out around that pond. I did go out to the park that evening as the sun was setting for a quick round from the front tees. My first throw went right into the tree on 1. So, I decided to throw a second discs and promptly threw it poorly and appeared to go into the bushes or pond. I spent the next ten minutes looking for a bright orange disc. I was in the bushes, kneeling, pulling down branches, climbing up and down hills, looking in trees and still couldn’t find it. I did manage to find someone else’s disc and just as I was giving up and started to move on, I decided to look further down the hole. Sure enough, the throw was just fine – it was all the way down, about 15’ from the basket! I did pretty good until I got to hole 6. This is the hole that I lost my blue Katana on last week. I decided to take a different line and sure enough…I threw it into a tree, where it stuck. After a couple minutes, I eventually found it and got it down. From there, I birdied the rest of the round. But I noticed I had lost one of my putters at some point. So, I walked the course a 2nd time and finally found it on 3 – all the way on the other side of the course. All told, I still managed to pull out a 21 (6-under-par) for the round. I did a 24-hour fast and considered going another day…but in the end, I opted to break it and enjoy some of Ann’s leftovers. Why is it that chili tastes even better warmed up a few days later? Or maybe it was just the fact that I was ready to eat my hand at that point, but I pigged-out and finished off the chili and cornbread. I’ll probably do another 24-hour fast. I know it’s not the same as a 48, but a pair of 24s is better than last week, so we’ll see. I changed the batteries in the front door lock and then we watched a couple DVR’d shows before Ann went to bed. I watched the 4th quarter of the MNF game and wound up losing my fantasy football matchup to my roommate, Brent, by less than 8 lousy points. I finished watching the Talladega cup race before calling it a night.

It was down in the low 40s as we commuted back to Columbus on Tuesday. We got Luke up as we left so that he could go work with Chad that day. He got cleaned up afterward and went with Alex up to Indy for his Fire 1 class. They were in full fire gear for that class and he said they’ll do it again for class on Thursday as well. I hit the ground running that day on my way to nearly 16K steps. State Licensing was in-house all day. They are good to work with but so much has changed with the regulations in that the state is asking for more and more every year. We did not have any EOC findings again this year! That’s two years in a row for us!! ???? There were three findings, which isn’t too bad. From the meeting afterward, it sounded like they already had formulated the plan of corrections and had things well in-hand. I was able to get a majority of the monthly supplies ordered for the facility, generating about 25 purchase orders. Because I lost by less than 8 lousy points to Brent, I bought him lunch from KFC that day. In the afternoon I worked on a couple projects, moving them forward a couple steps then Brent & I welcomed yet another visitor to the building. This time it was his corporate risk manager. We did a video review session with her until I finally had to leave. She has a big helping of suggestions, which is good and bad. I hope she doesn’t overload Brent. He’s only been on the job for what, like a month now? I went across the street and played a quick round of disc golf on another gorgeous afternoon. It was in the low 70s with no humidity and lots of sunshine. I shot pretty well, using that new Katana disc on 4, 5, 7, 8 & 9. It’s already getting broke in a little and my throws are improving every time out with it. I finished one off my best score with a 24. I picked up Annie and we went to Amoco for gas and slushes. I grabbed a couple Frito burritos for dinner as well and took Ann home. I went on out to the park and played a round from the back 9…and yes, I went over the water on 6 but not with my new Katana! I then decided to go ahead and play a quick twilight round on the front 9. I did pretty good but enjoyed my time more than anything else, shooting a 46 for the 18 holes. Since I ate the two burritos on my way to the park, I didn’t eat anything at the house…except some ice cream later that night. We watched a few DVR’d shows and called it an early night. Here are random pictures of our recent adventures.

I had to go out even earlier to warm up the car on Wednesday morning, since temps were in the 30s…brrr…. We actually ran the heater the whole time into work as well. We actually left before the sunrise and nearly made it all the way to work before it came up. We got Luke up again when we left as he worked for Chad that day, like yesterday. He worked over at Gma & Gigi’s house then did some work with Coach Harris afterwards then had Sam over after her softball practice finished. Ann had another good day at work while I had another stupid busy day out at mine. I finished up all the monthly purchasing with another 20 purchase orders while working on the 911 project as well as some IT stuff. After lunch, I wound up doing an EOC tour with Brent, Stacey & the corporate Risk Mgr. I got out at a decent time and was able to play 18 holes of disc golf at the AirPark across the street. It was another amazing day in the 70s with a slight, cool breeze. I threw pretty well, ending with a 49. I finally got the Katana flying good with two throws in the 300’ range! …That made it even more of a bummer when I threw the furthest I’d ever thrown on 18…right into the big pine tree at the pin. At first, I thought I had thrown it right to the stake…but once I got up there, the disc was nowhere to be found. I looked and looked for about 20 minute and never did find it. ? I was so mad – I was just getting that new disc to fly correctly…and now it’s lost! Dammit!! I’ll have to look for it again tomorrow and maybe even climb that damn tree! On my way to pickup Ann, I went ahead and ordered another replacement one off Amazon. So much for Prime…that damn disc won’t be here until Saturday… I got home and didn’t even want to go play at the park, still depressed from losing my new disc. Instead, I edited a few pictures for this week’s blog entry until Abby got home. She stopped at to see Gma & Gigi for a while then came home to look for dresses, sweatpants & sweatshirts, shoes, a cooler and some other random stuff to take back to Franklin with her. While she was here, we went ahead took her out to eat, since she was hungry and thirsty. We enjoyed some tequila with our tacos and had fun catching up with her. We saw several people out there that we knew, including Megan & Peyton! We came home and Abs gave Sam some clothes and then she loaded up her car, said her goodbyes and headed back to campus. Sam went home as well and Luke spoke with the general contractor he worked for today and was able to drum up more work for tomorrow as well. Ann & I got our comfy clothes on and watched the weekly FBI trilogy while I continued editing the 400 pictures for this week’s blog entry.

We finally got a little rain on Thursday morning. It was the first precipitation in quite a while for us…unlike Dad & Lynn, who finally got a break from the wet stuff for the first time in nearly a week. I had a fast morning, catching up on paperwork, putting away stock and doing my weekly rounds before leaving to get Ann and go see Ms. Jami for our monthly haircuts. We went through drive through for lunch and headed back to the office. Ann worked up front that afternoon, making her day fly by. We had our final day with our corporate risk manager. At this point, I think all of the possible people that could come inspect us this year have to see us. I’m sure there’ll still be others during the 4th quarter, but man; this has been the year of the inspection! I blame Covid… After work, I was able to get out and play 18 holes of disc golf at the AirPark. It was weird not having my Katana (which I, of course, looked for a couple times in that stupid tree!!) in my bag, but I managed. I definitely missed it but hit a couple of putts over 50’ on 3 and 8 to get me to two-below on the first 9 and followed it up with another 25 to end with a 50 for the day…and did NOT lose any discs! Ann & I drove home then I took her out to Dinah’s house for Girl’s Night. I was hoping to spend the night with my buddies too for Poker Night. However, it seemed everyone else was busy except me so we wound up cancelling it this week. Instead, I went out to the park for a couple rounds of twilight golf. I did decently that evening, throwing a 22 from the front and then excelling in the back 9 with a 23 – one of my better rounds in the last month. I got home and was talking to Dad & Lynn when a minivan pulled in behind me and a guy gets out and walks to Luke’s truck and starts to open it. I ask him if I can help him and he closes the door real quick and says that Luke has been working for him, doing construction jobs for him. Turns out he was there to pay Luke by leaving it in his truck. I had to go down and nearly confront him to get him to say something to me. How weird is it to get out at a man’s house and not say anything to him and just get into a vehicle parked there in his driveway!? I grabbed El Reparo leftovers for dinner and watched the Colts game with the dogs on a quiet evening. I ended up talking with people from work that night as the staff had an issue with the kids again. I don’t know if a full moon is coming or what is going on, but the current seems to be brewing in that place again… Meanwhile, Luke got up early with us again that morning and went to do construction at the same place he did the last couple days. He came home briefly and then left with Alex to head back up to his Fire class. We have lots of social media pictures to share this week.

I had to warm up the car again on Friday morning before we left the house. Luke got up and went with us that morning as well. We went through Dunkin then dropped Ann off at her downtown office for the first time in nearly a month. Luke & I ran a few errands then he worked on his truck while I worked from home. He couldn’t get the part he wanted to replace out nor repair it, so I took him to get the Hot Rod Lincoln, which had been setting out front of Gma & Gigi’s house with a big For Sale sign in the window. Although he’s had a few nibbles, he hasn’t had any real offers. So, he decided to just drive it until he can get his engine repaired. I got several things done that morning and then a little around noon, I picked up Annie and we went back to Walmart (my second trip there that day) to get food for Ann to start cooking for tomorrow’s tailgate. Meanwhile, Luke met up Chad to do their weekly lawn care routine. with After I finished working that afternoon, I began packing coolers and loading Black Betty. We were hoping to take Luke’s truck to have some extra room, but instead I had to pull on my teachings from my packing-master (Dad B)! He is the expert I can remember watching as a child. He could get more into the truck of a car than most people can get into the back of a truck! It is this training that has led Ann to giving me the moniker, The King of Cram.??? True to that high standard, I eventually figured out a way to get everything into the back of that car and still allow room for Ann & I and Luke & Sam to sit comfortably. I did have to start over twice but on the third try, it all fit like a glove. I’m not sure how well I’ll get it all back in there, but it’s in there now! We sat down to take a break and wound up falling asleep. When we woke up, we decided to go out to Shriver Field one last time this year to watch football and support our friends on Senior Night. The boys showed a lot of grit against a team the matched up with well. It was a very close game and at the half the Pirates were up by a TD after a goal line stand at the end of the 2nd quarter. We watched the Pirateers (whose music never started) wait for nearly 5 minutes in a squatting position, in an uncomfortable silence. While a couple parents scrambled to figure out what was wrong with the stereo system, their coach Kuyhlia ran up to the press box and played her phone over the PA. It sound terrible and you could barely make out the sound, but at least the girls could continue and we were happy the seniors got to perform one more time on the field. After the little cheerleaders performed and the youth football teams were announced, we were hoping to win the 50/50 raffle, but that didn’t happen. It was down in the lower 40s and Ann had a lot of cooking to do, so we wound up leaving and just listened/watched the game on WTRE via their Twitter feed. Luke & Sammi went to eat and then wound up in Indy to get cookies from Crumbl. These cookies look amazing but now that I’m on a new diabetic pill, I have to really watch what I eat. I wound up falling asleep on the couch and went on to bed.

I was up early again on Saturday morning, excited about the prospects of the day. I did a few chores that morning then drove to the BP to get another big bag of ice and some gas for Black Betty. I re-iced the coolers while Luke & Sam ran to Walmart to get us a bag of hand warmers, just in case it stayed too cool. Thankfully, it did not and I think we only used 1 or 2 packs as it warmed nicely into the sixties with lots of sun. The poor car looked like it used to when we would make trips in it to Florida or Canada. We were really loaded down. The car performed great for us and we made it safely to campus a little earlier than we anticipated. Abby & Will came to greet us in the parking lot, bringing his four Norwegian friends that made their first trip to the States. I packed up Ann’s cart and the kids helped carry all our stuff over to Cline Woods and then we began setting up. We quickly discovered we needed a bigger table! Ann had a ton of food for us and all the kids that came to hang out with us. We set up between the Phi Delt and Sig tents, which was perfect as we had so many visitors from both stop and see us. We got everything set up and cranked up the tunes. It was a little chilly when we started. Ann had a couple different sandwiches – an Italian one that the guys at Card Night are familiar with as well as a ham & cheese. She also made delicious, homemade pizza rolls, a really good veggie pizza, buffalo chicken dip as well as chips and dip with a ton of snacks. Although everyone ate on it all day long, there was still some leftovers that we had the kids take back to the fraternity house. The Grizzlies got up quickly on Anderson, scoring on their first possession and grabbing a sizeable lead at halftime. We all walked over to Faught Stadium during the halftime pause and saw several classmates as we made our way on to the sideline to cheer on Will, who was on the homecoming court. Could he keep the streak alive and become the 2nd straight representative of our small family to win Gold Royalty? We were pretty loud and a little rowdy as they introduced Will. Can you imagine how it could’ve been had Matthew been able to make it down that day? Sure enough, he did win and as he walked off the field, his friends and I tackled and jumped on top of him in celebration! ???? We eventually made our way back over to Cline Woods and continued the celebration. We finished off much of our beer and nearly all of our liquor. After the Griz wound up winning 54 to 14, we slowly packed up the site and re-packed the car. We made our way over to the Sig house, where we hung out in Will’s room with Abby and their friends for a while. We eventually decided to go eat dinner just down the street at Mi Abuelito, which is just off-campus and allowed the kids to just walk down to it – in lieu of driving. We enjoyed a big meal after a little bit of a wait. We knew we would have a wait no matter where we went, but thankfully it wasn’t that long (maybe 10 minutes) and they were able to seat our party of nine (the six of us as well as Abby’s friend Carly as well as Will’s friends David and Marcus. I know I was miserable when we left…so much good food! We met the kids back at the house and hung out for a little bit before putting Abby to bed, saying our goodbyes and hitting the road again. Thankfully we had an uneventful drive home and although we had plenty of time, we were too tired to even think about unloading the car. Instead, I covered the flowers outdoors in preparation of another hard frost overnight then we came in, got changed and settled in to watch a little TV. If you know us, you can guess that we never made it through even the first show and slept for a while out in the living room before eventually calling it a day. Homecoming did not disappoint again! Thank Gawd it only comes once a year – LOL! Here are pictures of recent additions to my Hot Wheels collection.

Lola was up early, barking to be let outside, so I took one for the team and went ahead and got up. I found a blanket and bundled up on the couch with the dogs. As I watched the Xfinity race at the Charlotte Roval, I wrote out all of this week’s html code. Once Annie got up, she made breakfast. Afterward, we unloaded the car and put everything away on a chilly morning. I uncovered the flowers as it had frosted again overnight with temps right at the freezing point. I did our weekly household chores and we got the house all cleaned-up. Meanwhile, Luke at breakfast then got picked up by Samantha’s folks as he joined them to go watch Sam play in a softball tourney in Shelbyville. We watched a little Fantasy Football Now to help set our lineups and then watched a little of the Purdue game, a little NFL from England and then watched the rest of the FBI show we turned off last night. I was a little sore that morning and enjoyed slowing down and just being a couch potato that afternoon. We watched football and watched our fantasy football teams suck again this week. For the 3rd time in 5 games, my QB was knocked out of the game and scored a big, fat zero points. After napping, I watched the Cowboys game, which they won to move to 4-1, thanks again to a great defensive effort that day. I watched the cup race at the Roval, which had an exciting overtime finish. Ann made Fireworks popcorn for dinner and we watched the weekly Law & Order trilogy on the DVR. It was a nice way to wind down the weekend and a relaxing way to wrap up another fast week, here at the Scheu abode.

Next up is our Waybac section which continues to feature digital stills from Dee’s camera back in mid-2000s. We lead off this week with a couple more pictures of the ladies on Main St with their dogs in December 2006. Next, we move on to 2007: In March we see Matt playing drums, up on stage in the high school auditorium as well as Gigi giving a speech during her mayoral campaign as well as the Gigster Group getting the word out; in April we see Matt & Grace at the Reds game in Cincy; in May was see our backyard full of friends and family on Memorial Day weekend; in June, the kids are enjoying their summer vacation in the movie theater at Wolf Theater; in July we see Matt with Gma at the Eiteljorg museum in Indy, a bunch of 4th of July pix as well as Grace’s bday and Sandy’s birthday; a couple more pix of the Van Halen concert in October; Maryann’s birthday in November and then the last two pictures are more from Christmas Eve with Gma & Gigi on Main St.
