‘Cause She is my Girl…and She can do No Wrong

It was business as usual around here finally, as we were able to put together a full week. Everyone was worn out by weeks’ end. Gone was the precipitation, but the early part of the week had some of the coldest temperatures yet of the winter. Although we never got below freezing, we were close – hitting single digits three days in a row with a biting wind. Thankfully, the weather broke over the weekend and most of the snow is gone as I make this entry. On Monday, Bu had both her jazz practice and basketball game cancelled due to rescheduling her Family Fun Night. Even though we knew the outcome, we attended that night to allow Abby to show-off her Science Fair Project where she earned a First Place ribbon. We walked around the gym and checked out all the entries for about a half hour. We stopped and talked with Ally and her family. It was funny that I noticed how much she reminded me of her aunt (Sandy); from her mannerisms, to her mouth to some of the phrasing of her grammar; it was weird. We ended up cutting out early and treating Bu to Dairy Queen instead to celebrate her accomplishments in Science Fair this year! Matt was kind enough to watch Luke for us (thanks bud) after weight lifting with the football team. Luke did a great job of cleaning up the play room…but as I look out there right now, he’s managed to wreck it already. Ann ended up getting a new laptop (finally) and brought it home for me to help set up…she ended up getting one identical to mine. I was saddened by the news today that guitar legend Gary Moore died at the young age of 58.

On Tuesday, Matt again had weight lifting and was proud that he earned a new football shirt from the coach due to his efforts in the weight room. Abby was supposed to have a basketball game in Batesville, but it was cancelled. Luke had basketball practice and Abby and I played basketball as well. We played 21, HORSE, around the world and worked on some different things. Ann went to the movies with Amy. They went to see “The Dilemma” – the new Ron Howard movie starring Vince Vaughn. They both said it was awful… Matt & I watched the Purdue / IU game on TV. The #12 Boilers beat the Hoosiers by 14 but it was closer than the score indicated. I found a few more Biggest Loser pictures of Allen on the internet. Also we crossed an important rite of passage…Abby is officially taller than Gigi today!!!

On Wednesday, Abby attended her first Spell Bowl practice. We are quite proud that she has accomplished so much this year. She also attended her belated jazz dance practice with Baili that evening. It was the first time Ann has seen her dance this year. OMG, Luke said the funniest thing that night. He was getting something off Ann’s end table and her bra was setting there. He dramatically gasped and jumped back. Ann picked it up and he again cowered in its wake and said, “I’m scared of bras!” I commented that it would one day be his best friend and then Abby & Ann started having a bra conversation (she is wearing one these days as well) and then he quipped that he also wanted a bra. When I said it was for girls, he said, “I want a small, tight shirt then!” I told him that it was dubbed a “bro” by the Seinfeld guys…and sure enough…yep – you guessed it; he now wants a bro. We received some lovely artwork from the kids that night. I liked Abby’s rainbow sun, but Luke’s psychedelic semis take the cake. Ann went to her second board meeting for the girls’ basketball program on Thursday night. Abby went to basketball practice in lieu of going to her tap class. Matt went to weight lifting after school and was absolutely pooped when he got home – in fact he fell asleep on the couch and wouldn’t get up, so he slept out in the playroom all night. Ann & I finally caught up on several of our DVR’ed programs. On Friday, Ann went out scrapbooking at Mrs. B’s with Amy and their friends. Matt stayed the night with his good friend Joel (who lives two houses down from Maryann & Sandy, in Maryann & Dean’s old house where Ann grew up. I took the other two kids out to eat at El Chile Poblano where I enjoyed a margarita larger than Luke’s head! We came home and played Wii games for an hour or so and then settled down and watched a surprisingly good movie, Disney’s “Price of Persia.” I was saddened to learn that Tom Carnegie had died today. That makes two this week…who will be the third? Mom always said they go in three’s. …and on a sweet – but odd – note, Franklin College sent Ann & I a Valentine’s Day card…

Saturday was an early morning as we got off to a quick start with Lukey’s basketball game out at the YMCA. Luke had a phenomenal game…in fact it was the best basketball game of his young life! The entire team played very well, but Lucas shined out there that morning. He was 5-11 from the floor for 10 points (his personal best); he also had 4 assists and made very good passes. He had 13 rebounds (another personal best), 2 steals, 2 forced turnovers and 4 blocked shots (another personal high!!)! He also won the jump ball at the tip-off and played tenacious defense. …an outstanding effort on his part and a tribute to the wonderful practices his coach has been holding this year with him and the squad.

Ann brought home Baili’s laptop and said that it was badly infected – so much so that she had taken it to an IT professional and were told there was no way of salvaging it – that it would need to be wiped and completely reprogrammed. So it found its way to me as a last ditch effort to stave off losing all their information. That poor device was correctly diagnosed – well mostly. It was indeed a total mess. It was infected with a virus that locked down the computer really tight. It would only allow internet explorer and windows explorer to run and that was it…absolutely nothing else, including the task manager. However, I found some good advice on the net and successfully got it cleaned up, even surprising me. Chalk one up for the little guy, I guess! It was Daddy / Daughter Night at the YMCA. Abby & I haven’t missed this annual event since its inception back when she was very small. However, last year we noticed that we were the oldest by a few years. We still had a good time, but we knew it was time to find a new way to celebrate. So this year, we decided to go out for dinner & a movie in Columbus. On our way out of town, we saw where there were still several trees and limbs down from last week’s ice storm and strong winds. So we made the trip over to Columbus and went out for diner to her favorite eatery – “Ruby’s house” – as she calls it (the rest of the world calls it Rube Tuesdays). Dinner as good as it always is – Abby had the chicken sliders and salad bar and I had the Cajun tilapia and a huge salad as well. Next, we caught the new movie called “Just go with it.” It was very good with fine actors such as Adam Sandler, Jennifer Aniston and Nicole Kidman…but it was the lovely Brooklyn Decker that stole this film for me. Ann would have liked it for all of the Sting music in the soundtrack. Abby & I both loved it. Afterwards, we kept the tradition alive by going out Hot Wheels hunting. In Greensburg, that’s pretty well limited but in Columbus, we hit several spots. Abby also finally found the perfect sock monkey she had been searching for. We topped the evening off with our traditional drive through the Dairy Queen drive through for a tall blizzard…yum! When we got home, we learned of a new tradition – that of an apparent back last, dubbed Mom & Sons night. …so much for it being a special night for Abby and I, huh? They had gone out to eat at a new restaurant in town and brought home a chocolate pie for dessert. We watched the old Tom Hanks movie, “Big.” Well, the kids watched it; Ann & I both fell asleep early on. LOL. On Sunday, we did several things around the house, including me fixing the light switch wiring in the bathroom, Ann fixing the programming of the clothes washer and Matt helping me to install new digital TV converters on all the TVs around the house. Comcast notified us a couple months ago that they were upgrading their system and that all sets would be non-functional by springtime. So we took the plunge and entered the digital age. I’m just not very happy about paying yet more $ each month to Comcast, but what you gonna do… Ann left for several hours today with Bu to go shoe shopping with her. She came home with a damn dress shirt & tie for me for later this next week…but I’ll explain that more later. I am not a suit and tie guy by any means…but in a sure sign that I am getting old, they actually didn’t look too bad (I can’t believe I just said that, ugh). Matt & I watched the #14 Boilermakers take on the Fighting Illini. They came out a little flat but Painter made some great halftime adjustments and they beat them by double figures. Jajuan Johnson continues to lead the Big Ten in scoring! Luke & I watched the Bud Shootout I had taped from last night and we played a little more Wii as well as did some cleaning around the house too. I think we all got in a short nap at some point in the day as well…a good, lazy day. All in all, it was a pretty good day until I started receiving phone calls and texts from work. It seems that we’re having more trouble with our sprinkler system…great; that’ll make for a long week coming up, I’m sure…it never ends.

Here are a couple of home videos from this week, as well as a few other ones of interest this week. Oh, and as promised last week, I did dig up our wedding day video and have it transferred in to 6 smaller videos on the laptop. I just need to watch it and see how embarrassing it is and will probably start posting parts of it if there is interest. Please leave a comment here on the blog and LMK if you’d like to see some bad dancing, some bad clothes and even worse hair!! 😉

Next up, let’s take a look at our Waybac section. I’ve got some really, really good ones for ya this time out! Leading off, we have an old high school picture from the mid-twenties of my Grandpaw Brown; then we have an unknown photo dated 1924 (Mom, can I assume this may be Great Grandma Brown or even Great Grandma Morgan perhaps?) with lady standing in front of a Model T car; then we have an odd scan of an old slide from Dean’s collection; and finally a couple crops of Dean in front of his home in the ‘50s; and finally a couple crops of an old favorite of mine and the only one that I know of that includes me with Mom & Great Grandma Brown, in front of Kenny & Marilou’s house in Rossville.

Now we’ll fast-forward to June of ’89 for Rob’s First Communion at St. Pete’s in LaPorte with Aunt Dorothy, Mom & Dad; followed by a handful of pictures October of 1990 with Grandpaw Brown and the new edition to our family at the time – little Tuffy, up in LaPorte.

Here we have pictures of Mom & Dad’s first boat, the Pirate Pontoon on Pine Lake in LP in the summer of about ’91; Aunt Marilou & Uncle Kenny’s final trip up to LaPorte in October of ’91 or so as well as Mom & Dad in costume at approximately the same time / week (I’m sure there’s a story with these lovely photos); next is Deena Marie’s 6th grade school picture in ’95; Dad posing inside what would become the house on the hill in Rossville in March of ’97; and Rob’s graduation from high school in December of ’97 in Alabama.

Hey guys glad to hear all is going pretty good for you all. Things are about the same here. Keeping busy with work and so on. I am back on the night shift it looks like for a little while. Not real happy about it but have to do what it takes to have and keep a job these days. Plus I need the work hours to graduate from school too. Hopefully it won’t last too long. Sharon is going in on Thursday for a proceedure to be done on her neck from the car wreck she was in. For simplicity they are burning the nerve endings in her neck for a last ditch effort to relieve her of the pain in that area. I will be with her and taking the day off. Will keep you guys posted and appreciate any prayers for her. Well better go for now. We love you guys.
