Oh Let the Sun Beat Down Upon my Face…

Another busy week has come and gone. The biggest story of the week was the heat. With all the sun and humidity, we swore we were near the equator. Also, gone are the deafening sounds of the cicadas of late summer, now replaced by all the damn crickets chirping – the little ones are everywhere. Grace again joined us for our morning routine each day this week before school. Abby tried out for the school musical (Beauty & the Beast) after school. She was hoping to get the part of the clock, but that part went to an older child. She will instead be a part of the chorus. Luke had soccer practice that evening. I touched base with the coach, regarding the league’s request to move Luke to the other team. They had thankfully backed off after the concerned email I sent to the league president. His coach brought Luke out to the high school after practice, to join us at Matt’s JV game against Jennings Co. Aunt Deanna took Abby to dance practice for us and Grandma / Gigi joined us with Grace. Matt had told us that the game time had been pushed back due to the high temperatures, but it started on time and we ended up being late. We actually missed most of the 1st quarter. Matt played left Guard on offense (not sure why he was moved from center?) and Tackle and Nose Guard on defense. He also played all special teams. He had 5 tackles and several excellent blocks. The Pirates won 32-14 to even their record at 1-1. We went out to Buffalo Wings & Rings after the game, where we played the trivia games again – Matt won one and I won the other two – again dominating the girls. Ha ha…

I had a dentist appointment before work on Tuesday that went good. That evening, Abby had soccer practice, Matt had football practice, Luke and I played catch at the soccer fields after exercising and Abby had jazz dance practice. We enjoyed the night off on Wednesday. While Luke and I were out walking, Ann called us in to fix a leak under the sink. Luke & I had it fixed in about 15 minutes and resumed our walk. I don’t what’s more scarier: That I knew how to repair it, that I had all the parts on-hand or that I could actually find everything out in that messy garage!? It was very hot that evening. In fact, we were supposed to do yard work, but put it off a week due to the nasty temps. Thursday was even hotter! The temperatures alone were in the triple digits with the heat index reaching even higher due to the humidity. Of all days, Ann accompanied Luke to the Indy Zoo that day as a part of the elementary school’s fieldtrip. As always, Ann had plenty of stories to tell upon her return. Luke’s favorite part of the zoo visit was seeing the bats, the dolphin show and the elephants – especially the dolphins because there was a ball they hit, it was air conditioned and everyone (including Ann) got soaked since she was cool enough to sit in the front with her small group! Abby had soccer that evening as Luke & I sweated outside in the blistering heat as we exercised.

Friday was the hottest day of the week, stretching all the way up near 105 – but the humidity was the real killer. We had a couple HVAC units fail at work. On Friday night, Luke had to miss soccer practice again, due to us travelling for an away varsity game – back to our old stomping grounds – Franklin. We got up there early enough to stop and get something to eat, but since we couldn’t decide if we had enough time – we just went in to Wendy’s, thinking it would be fast. Ha! That was a joke. It wasn’t that they were overly busy, but the little girl working the counter was way overwhelmed and was not only really slow but also got our order wrong. We ended up spending over a half hour just eating in a fast food restaurant. We still got to the game in plenty of time. The grounds at their new school are just gorgeous. It feels like a college campus, it really does. There was a big crowd there that night for the game. Even though the ticket lady told Luke he couldn’t play ball, they still did the entire time; as did several other children – out behind the bleachers. The field is made similar to that of the Colt’s – the new style of artificial turf. I had to take Luke and Abby out to check it out after the game – it was surprisingly soft. The facilities are all state of the art – it is shocking to see how nice their set up is – and I forget that is the difference between a 3A school like Greensburg and a 5A school like this one…as for the game itself; the Pirates had their chances. The Grizzly Cubs jumped out to a quick lead only to see Greensburg battle back and make it close at halftime with the momentum. However, the poor tackling on the defensive side finally caught up with the Pirates and they couldn’t score in the 2nd half, losing 34-7. …but the score isn’t truly indicative of the game. I believe we actually had more yards from scrimmage and moved the ball well, just couldn’t seem to put the ball in the endzone. It was a late night, as I didn’t get Matt picked up and brought home until nearly 12:30 on Saturday morning…

Saturday was a crazy day! After getting a few hours of sleep, we were back up early that morning. It was already in the 80’s when I dropped off Abby at her soccer game and took Matt out to his football game. I met Ann and Luke back at the soccer fields, where they stayed until about halftime and then headed over to Sunman. Luke played the Sunman green team. Unfortunately, Luke’s team was missing their best player who had injured his collarbone the week before. Luke played the entire game, as did all the kids…and with the heat, they eventually wilted and basically gave up. They ended up getting stomped 12-0. Meanwhile, back in Greensburg, Abby’s team wasn’t fairing any better against the Batesville green team. They too were short handed and Abby played the entire game again. She played forward in the first half and defense in the second half. However, her coach moved her back and forth to try and help out where needed. But it was to no avail as her team fell to the same fate as Luke’s had – losing 12-0 also. It was not pretty…

We left right away and headed out to the high school again, where Matt and his JV football squad were facing off against Franklin. I again missed most of the 1st quarter. Matt played the same position on offense – left guard. Again, not sure why he’s not playing center, but this way perhaps he’ll be able to pull out and go nail someone on a sweep sometime. LOL He also played defensive tackle and all special teams. His side of the offensive line again did very well. It seemed that each time they ran behind him and the left side, they had good gains but when they ran on the right side, they got stuffed. Apparently the coaches didn’t see that, as they continued to run mostly to the right side. I was pleased to see them do more passing. We still didn’t complete many passes, but the fact that they even tried did keep the defense honest and it opened up the running game. The Pirates were in the game but tackling also plagued this JV team and with too many arm tackles, it eventually caught up with them and they gave up too many long plays and lost 39-12. As with the varsity game, the score was not indicative of the game. The Pirates had their chances and could’ve won the game. Instead, their record now stands at 1-2. It was so hot during the game that they actually took extra breaks not only between quarters but also during the game as well to stay hydrated. Matt recorded 4 tackles and again had plenty of good blocks. He was exhausted after the game and came home and fell asleep after lunch.

I tried to also take a nap but Ann would have none of it, insisting that I accompany her to her friend Julie’s wedding up in Bargersville. So we all got dressed up (except Matt) and headed back up north again. We got up there in plenty of time and got a good seat. It was a nice ceremony that had a cool minister overseeing the festivities. Abby’s best friend, Megan and her sister Mallory, were the bridesmaids. Afterwards, we headed up to Greenwood for the reception, where we had a good time. The food was good, the kids enjoyed dancing and running around and the mood was good overall. We came home with a couple extra kids as Abby brought Megan and Kenzie to stay the night. The girls had a blast out on the dance floor and even Luke joined them eventually.

Ann made biscuits and gravy for breakfast on Sunday morning. It rained all day, but that didn’t stop the kids from running around outside and getting soaked to the bone! We really needed this rain. It was overcast all day and with it, a big break in the heat accompanied it. Julie picked up Megan around noon or so but Kenzie ended up staying another night with us. We did some basic weekly chores around the house but focused mainly on taking it easy, as we were worn out from the week’s activities. The girls did a good job of including Luke in their activities all weekend, and really it was nice to see that the kids all got along really well the whole weekend. They got in to Ann’s makeup and had some fun becoming zombies at first and then had black eyes from where “someone” hit them with a baseball bat – silly kids… We were up early again on Monday morning for Labor Day holiday to get Matt out to football practice. It was MUCH cooler – about 40 degrees different than just 48 hours earlier, as we started off in the 50’s and didn’t get much warmer. It was so nice – we actually got the whole house opened up for the first time since early in the spring. We grilled out burgers and had a huge lunch, complete with corn on the cob and pasta salad! Kenzie went home after lunch and we all took naps!! It was a nice, relaxing way to end this crazy week – especially with the Star Wars marathon all weekend on Spike TV. It was weird though, as I don’t think we even flipped on the Jerry Lewis telethon – oh wait, I can’t call it that anymore, since Jerry wasn’t on this year – much less donate as in years past. Without Jerry, there is very little interest for me. He has done it all my life and I can’t imagine the show without him. I was expecting to see him one last time, but the MDA pulled him at the last minute for whatever reason. But it sounds like they didn’t need me this year, as they passed last year’s totals by a couple million bucks. Good for the kids.

Next, let’s check out this week’s videos. First up with have 5 new family videos and those are followed with several from around the web I wanted to share this week:

And we wrap up this entry with our favorite feature – the Waybac section. As has been the trend during this summer, we aren’t going too far back this time out. We start with Uncle Rob asleep again in the dog’s bed down in the basement of the Dream House in Rossville in 1989; then we head to Franklin College for several Phi Delta Theta pictures (thanks to Chad for the pix on Facebook) from 1990: including the Pi Phi Winter Formal, Homecoming Cheer Stick Champs and the Pledge Walkout.
