Holdin’ On…Ten Years Gone…

You know we love that it was a short work week due to the Labor Day holiday weekend, but have you ever had one of those days when it seems like everybody’s on your case? It almost doesn’t pay to take a day off, as it always seems that you return to hear everyone bitching about what went wrong while you were out of the building. I had a nasty headache all day, man. In fact, several of us here at the Scheu abode have had some sinus issues either due to allergies or changes in the weather or whatever but the Kleenex guys are sure lovin’ us! That made for a very long day and when we finally got out of work and back home, we dropped Abby at soccer and came home and Ann, Luke & I all laid down with the dogs in our bed and took a well-needed breather for a little while. Abby had me run out and pick up a teammate before practice and that made us about 15 minutes late. Ann picked the girls up afterwards and ran them both out to the junior high school for the school musical practice. Abby learned that she had not gotten the part she was hoping to get but Ann consoled her with some sound advice. It looks like she will be a villager in the chorus for Beauty & the Beast. What a difference a few days make as we have seen a 50 degree difference!! After seeing high 90’s on Saturday, we started off Tuesday at 48. The highs only reached mid-sixties today and most of the week as well. We had to break out the long pants for the first time in a few months. Not only did it feel like fall, but it just plain looked like late fall – it was weird…except for the leaves on the trees, but it was overcast and misty and just plain blah all week. Things change so quickly in Indiana.
On Wednesday, it was cooler again, raining all day and night. We really needed the rain, so it is difficult to complain about it. We had some kid drama at Mom & Gigi’s house that evening and on Thursday morning, Jamie ended up taking Gracie to school. It was sure a cold and rainy day that day and even that evening. I swear we are suffering from seasonal affective disorder due to lack of sun! Ann had a car issue after work when it refused to fire. By the time I got over to her, she had gotten it started so I just followed her home. Not sure what the issue is, but we’ll have to keep an eye on it. As it is, I still need to find time to get her tire looked at again, as it continues to keep going down despite having it “fixed” a couple weekends ago. Thankfully she didn’t have any further issues this weekend. Dad B had surgery on his knee that didn’t go so well. He was in a lot of pain and has a bit of a long road ahead of him. We wish him well and a speedy recovery! That evening, Abby had soccer and Luke & I finally got back out and exercised in the cold rain before we went and picked up the his older siblings from their respective practices. By the time we got back home, Ann had supper on the table that was awesome – homemade chicken strips, rice and corn. Matt & I enjoyed the NFL opener that evening…or at least the 1st half of it since we were both asleep and snoring by halftime – but the Packers looked pretty tough against the Saints.
Grace was again MIA on Friday morning and it again was a cool, wet ride in to school and work again. It rained all day, right up until Luke’s practice when it began to finally dissipate a little. Ann went scrapbooking and Luke had soccer practice. Abby helped me to finally update Matt’s football yard sign. We picked up Luke and went out to Matt’s varsity football game against Lawrenceburg. Shriver Field was pretty full and Grandma met me in the stands. The kids only stopped by to say hi to Grandma and to ask me for money. Ann joined us in the 2nd quarter. Christy and Terry also sat with us. Luke and Alex spent the whole 2nd half playing football and shouting through the megaphones they acquired. Abby ran around with her little girl friends in the 1st half and was out playing football with the boys during the 2nd half. Matt saw no playing time and was pretty frustrated by it. It was a great game and although the score ended up pretty close, it is not indicative of how the game went. The Pirates were in control of the game the whole time and held on to win 38 – 35 to even their record at 2-2 with 2 road loses and 2 home wins. After the game, Ann returned to scrapbooking at Mrs. B’s and I took the kids out to El Chile Poblano for a late dinner. We literally had the entire place to ourselves and our meals came within 5 minutes of being placed! But even with all that happening, the biggest news of the day was that Jamie proposed to Deanna…and she said yes!!

Saturday morning came awfully early. We first dropped off Matt at football practice and went to the soccer fields to watch Luke’s U10 team take on the Sunman blue team. Luke had a whale of a game, scoring his first goal of the season during the 1st quarter! He also took a couple other shots that didn’t go in. Ann had run home to get Matt’s picture envelope that he inadvertently left on his desk and missed his big shot! He ended up playing goalie the entire rest of the game. He gave up one goal that sailed high over his head despite leaping in the air. Thankfully, his team scored one other goal and they won the game 2-1! That pulled their record up to 2-2 for the year. Luke made several great plays at goalie to preserve the victory. Once his game ended, we had to quickly pack up and get on the road to Sunman for Abby’s game…

Abby played the Sunman black team for the first time this year. Abby also had a great game, kicking very hard – in fact their whole team kicked the ball very hard. Abby herself had 6 or 7 shots on goal and one finally went in!! Although legit, she got it not only with her athletic skill but also cunning (with the urging of her number one fan!) – sneaking it in after the goalie kicked her own goal kick, leaving the box empty and wide open. So, Abby stole the ball, and just took a long, blind shot from nearly midfield. The goalie was headed back to spot and had her back turned and didn’t see Bu’s shot which found its mark. That shot put the Pinkies on top and they never looked back, winning 5-3. Remember, this is a team that only scored one goal all year and had not won a game yet! Abby could’ve had another 4 or 5 assists as her passing was again very, very good! With this victory, the Thunder raised their record to 1-3-1 on the year.

We came home after the game and got the kids in the shower, Ann put together her cheesy potatoes and we headed over to Batesville to Paul & Dayla’s house for their end of summer bash. It was great to see Paul, Pat, Wes and Wayne…along with their wives and everyone else. We ate like kings and played cornhole all day and night. Wayne and I came in 2nd place during the final tourney of the night. Luke played with Jarrett, Layton, Cayden and Conner. Abby played with Jarrett and everyone got along so well. It was very relaxing and well-needed. Matt had planned to attend as well but couldn’t get up when we left and ended up sleeping for six hours before finally waking up. Sunday was, of course, Patriot Day – and the 10th anniversary of the events of 9.11.01. Our hearts and prayers go out to the families who lost loved ones on that day and in the subsequent days of oversee battles in the middle east. We hope the troops come home safe and for good soon. We watched several tributes this morning, but I eventually had to turn them off due to being unable to stop crying. It still brings back so many painful memories of that fateful day when the whole world changed. We did our weekly chores around the house, watched the taped DVR’ed NASCAR race from last night and saw Jeff Gordon nearly win another, but instead came in 3rd and will also start the Chase in 3rd place as well. It was a great race that saw several wrecks! It was opening Sunday for the NFL, so of course football dominated our TV’s. The Colts looked just awful without Peyton Manning (I still think they are making a mistake not starting Curtis Painter – a Purdue alum) at QB. The Bear’s D looked great. Even though I hate the Redskins, I found myself rooting for their defense as my favorite rookie was drafted by them – Ryan Kerrigan from Purdue. He had his 1st start at outside linebacker and did great, including a fantastic play where he sheds a blocker trying to cut him at the knees, tips a quick slant-pass up in to the air, catches it and rumbles in for a touchdown!! We ended the night and week watching the Cowboys play the Jets in the “Ryan Bowl.” The ‘Boys’ defense looked good – especially my favorite player, Demarcus Ware. I was impressed with Rob Ryan’s defensive scheme and am finally excited about the prospects of their defense for the first time in a long, long time!

Here are this week’s videos, including two of this week’s family adventures and a few from around the net this week I’d like to share:

Now let’s get to our favorite portion of the blog – our Waybac section. Leading off this time out, we have Dad and Rob prepping for Rob’s first game day in September of ’87 when Rob played Pop Warner ball up in LP; next is Rob’s fall family night at Riley – this picture is in the gym where we also had the stage – in late September of ’87 where the theme was “Music Moves Me;” Mom, Dad & Rob’s visit to see me play at Franklin College in early October of ’87 – and shockingly it was raining – as it did for nearly every home game for us that year…it is interesting to see my old dorm room in Hoover Hall. I would only spend my freshman year stuck in that nasty place and would move to the new dorms during the ensuing summer and then on to the Phi Delt house for my final two years. I forgot how much I hated my time in that dorm…I see that they must’ve arrived at some God-forsaken time in the morning as usual. :0) …and I also see Nathan and Dan in the stands and guess what they are holding…and finally Nathan and Rob back in Kokomo for the annual birthday party for the three of us, though it looks like I was unable to attend that weekend.

Next we move a decade in to the future for Matt’s first birthday party in our townhouse in Columbus during March of ’97; this is followed by Matt’s “real” first Easter – over at Grandma & Gigi’s house in the Ryle Addition in April of ’97; and finally a little party at the Pine Lake with Mom and Dad and George & Sue and Charlie & Evelyn – not sure who the other couple is though…looks like a special day with all the kissing going on during the Independence Day weekend of 1999.

Finally, we have several from Matt’s fourth birthday party on Main St which includes a few very cute pictures of little Bu in March of 2000; then up to Rossville for a visit to Grandma & Grandpa’s house during April of 2000 – probably for Easter; and then the last two pictures are from late April of 2000 when we got our new minivan – a Dodge Grand Caravan SE that was pretty cool in its day…

Well that does it for this week’s entry in to the Scheu Family Blog. Thanks for keeping up with us this time out, as always. We’ll catch up with you next time. Until then, have a good one.
Later, Scheu

Great videos Tom and great pictures!! Way to go Luke and Abby!! Good goals and congrats!! The other couple with us at the lake were Carol and Steve. They had a pontoon at the beginning of our pier and they were from the Chicago area. They were a very nice couple and we had alot of fun with them. We were all having a wee bit of fun and acting like we were getting married. That trellis was left for awhile after a wedding at Dietrichs. Those were the days…. I also had to quit watching yesterday as the memories are still very sad to watch and such suffering was felt as a nation. How devastating for many, many people. Looks like you had alot of fun at your party too. Everyone looks good and that was a great picture of you and Paul. So glad you reconnected after all these years to be together again with your families. Matthew was sooo cute at his first birthday party. Where have the years gone??!! Loved the pictures of Rob in his football uniform too. He was such a little bit then. Also, can you do me a favor. Do you remember the picture of dad from years ago behind the meat dept. counter at Buds Highlander in Lafayette when your dad and I gave him for his birthday a case of beer. You posted it on your site awhile back but I don’t remember which one it was and my computer is sooo slow downloading so….I am asking for your help and the son of the Highlander would love to see that picture and I thought I could copy and paste it to FB and share it with him. What do you think? Love you lots and we will see you in a few weeks now. XXXOOO’s

  • Sorry Mom; no picture. As I had said yesterday, that picture didn’t come from me. It doesn’t sound familiar at all. I wonder if you saw it at Sharon’s house or something? I checked all the pictures from the blog last night (my God there have been a lot of pictures put up here!) and I could not find anything. I don’t think it has been recent since the pix over the summer have been more recent – since we started having kids. I am almost through this stash of pictures and would anticipate that by Halloween I will be breaking open another box of goodies to scan and post. I will keep an eye out for it. Sorry…not sure what you’re thinking of though…
    – Tom
PS; I even asked Ann (who proof-reads the entries the next morning for me) about the picture and she couldn’t remember a picture like it either…
