White is the Light that Shines Through…

We enjoyed a nice, long, relaxing, week off from work and school. It was made even better because we had Grandpa Bryan up from the Sunshine State to spend the holidays. It was obviously really tough at times without Grandma for the first time, but because we had each other, I think it made it easier to deal with. We saw relatives on all sides (Scheu, Bryan & Owens) of our extended family tree this week also…which is always a good thing too. We start off this week with pictures from last week at the Scheu family Christmas party at Chuck & Cindy’s house as well as our trip out to BW&R and the morning after being “forked??? by Abby’s friends (WTH?).

Monday was Christmas Eve. Matt & I were up early for breakfast with the wrestling team at Trackside. Unfortunately, there was no one even there to open the store! So we ended up out at Waffle House. It was Matt & I’s first trip out there. I was a little surprised to find they did not accept debit/credit cards – as far as I know, there are only a few of those types of places still out there. Afterwards, it was on to the K of C’s to help with Cheer Fund where we also saw Alex Meyer (the Twins’ pitching prospect from right here in Greensburg). Ann made chili for lunch and we watched Polar Express, Miracle on 34th St and other Christmas movies with Grandpa. Abby had her boyfriend, Matthew, over for a little while. Later, we had dinner at Memaw & Gigi’s house then on to church. …church was rough – especially during hymns. Man, I swear Mom was with us in there. It was really weird, but I kept hearing her voice with every song that church sang… It was a little too much and it eventually got to me. Finally that torture was over and we all went back to Grandma & Gigi’s house again for the traditional opening of presents with them! We had fun and got lots of nice things. As always, it got late far too soon and before we knew it, it was time to pack up and head back home. When we got back to our house, we continued with our traditional activities. First, we headed outside where I read the enchantment as the kids sprinkled reindeer dust out in the front yard. We came back in and got warmed up as we read The Night Before Xmas. Next, we put out milk & cookies (as well as Bu’s cubed cheese & a bottle of Santa Coke – which was really hard to find this year!). And finally once all the kids were asleep, we helped Santa wrap gifts until the wee hours of the morning…but before we went to sleep, we had one more traditional task to perform – getting the picture of Grandpa sleeping. It was obviously a little different this year since it was the first one without Grandma…

We were up much too, much too early for Christmas morning on Tuesday. Luke tried to get us up at like 4:30 or something, but we kept hitting “snooze??? on his wishes and finally gave in around 7 or so, I think. Luke enjoyed played Santa, passing out presents for us. We spent a couple hours opening presents by the glow of the artificial “Yule log??? on TV. :0) Our favorite presents were as follows: Luke – hot wheels track, iPod, Skullcandy headphones & easel. Abby – Beats headphones & iPhone and shoes. Matt – GS III phone, headphones, PS3 games and wallet. Ann – bracelet, necklace & quilt (along w/ imported chocolate bars & Silver Patron!). Tom – Dewalt 18v drill, streaming media player & of course Hot Wheels! Dad – being together with everyone (isn’t that sweet?). We watched basketball, Ted (the unrated version) – which was hilarious, and one of our all-time favorites – How the Grinch Stole Xmas. We were really impressed with Dad, who is really coming in to the 21st century. He knows how to do internet banking; send/receive emails; get on Facebook; pull up iTunes; listen to his iPod; and even do texting on his GS3 – wow!!!!

We had a severe winter storm advisory that was upgraded to an actual blizzard warning on Wednesday!! Ann made biscuits & gravy for breakfast. It snowed and snowed and blew – what a mess! There was snow everywhere, despite Grandpa Bryan’s denial! The dogs loved it but somehow kept ending up with large dingleberries on their undersides when they came back inside! Still, we had fun going out in it even though we weren’t really supposed to – we got Abby an OtterBox for her iPhone and Luke a pair of gloves and then went sledding for about an hour until we couldn’t take it anymore – it was so cold!! It was the first time in two years since we had been on the sled hill and the first time since the tornado. We came back and had hot cocoa & snacks, played some euchre and drank a few beers before a dinner of lasagna and then watched a few movies.

We bummed around the house on Thursday before heading up to Zionsville to meet up with the Bryan side of the family. We had a nice holiday get together at Katie & Jake’s lovely home. I couldn’t believe that I had left the cameras as home again – the 2nd time this week! D’oh!! Nearly everyone was there – Virden, Belinda, Deena Marie (w/ her BF, Matt); Dan, Sharon, Nathan, Steph, Haleigh & Jaicie, Katie, Jake, Brodie & Reece, along with Dad and the four of us. We had a lot of catching up to do since it had been a few years since we were all together. And we finally got a group picture of us all – the first in like 30 years! I am going to attempt to work some magic and try and photo shop in Rob & Sharon (who were in Tennessee for the week) and Matt (who had to stay back for wrestling practice, which had been moved back to the afternoon due to all the snow, which was still falling at this point). On Friday, Ann did a lot of running with her and Abby getting their hair done and then taking Matt to the doctor for a cut on his arm that had the look of being infected. In fact, his coaches said he would not be allowed to wrestle this weekend without a doctor’s note. Of course the doctor laughed and cleared him but gave him an antibiotic just in case. Meanwhile, Luke & I hung out with Grandpa and did our weekly chores in between watching a bunch of movies. Later, we all met up for dinner at El Reparo and Dad and I enjoyed a couple of Texas Margaritas with 1800 tequila – yum! 😉

We were up early on Saturday for Matt’s wrestling tourney in Indy, up at Ben Davis High School. It was the annual Giant 16 Invitational. Hamilton South East won it again this year, followed by host Ben Davis. After that was Terre Haute South, South Adams, Booneville, South Putnam, Fountain Central, Greensburg (8th, 15 points out of 6th), Attica, Washington, Eastern Hancock, Northwest, Anderson, Mount Vernon, Cloverdale & finally Turkey Run finished last. As for Matt, he went 4-1 on the day, losing in the 1st round to the eventual winner at 220. He fought the defending champ from South Adams tooth and nail, but wasn’t even ready to go. Due to some scheduling snafu, the mat he was on went from 185 lbs straight to 220 – skipping the 192 weight class. He did not have a chance to go through his normal warm-up routine and came in cold. He was stymied by the bigger, stronger Starrider opponent. During the 3rd period, he was down by 4 points and got turned to his back. While fighting to get out, the referee suddenly stopped the match to everyone’s surprise and called a pin. Wait until you see the video – honestly, his shoulders were 2??? off the mat! But whatever; he was in a bad spot and would’ve taken a miracle to pull out…but with that being said, we are talking about the Comeback Kid! We were all disappointed for Matt, since one loss means no shot at the championship. However, right in line with his character, he came back with a fury, winning the remainder of his matches by pin. In the second round of matches he earned a bye due to his 6th place finish last year. In the third round, he faced a large boy from Mt Vernon. He pinned the Marauder in the 1st minute of the 1st round!! In his fourth round, he faced a boy from Terre Haute South. Matt worked really hard and looked impressive with his offensive moves, pinning the Brave in the second round. In the fifth and final round, Matt wrestled his best match, really taking the offensive advantage, eventually pinning the Viking early in the second round. Their coach pulled Matt aside afterwards and said some really nice things about him and the effort he had showed all day. We agree – way to go, Scheu. You set out to better yourself this year and did so, finishing with a 5th place ribbon. Keep working on your game and you will achieve your goals this year…and to do it at less than 100% health with only 1 ½ shoulders functioning correctly is outstanding. We are very proud of you; you should be equally proud of yourself and that confidence should be coming back about now… We signed Matt out (after a much-needed shower) and headed out to find some place to eat. We were worried that many places would be closed back home due to it still snowing and the road conditions being downgraded to Code Orange – meaning only essential traffic is allowed on the roads. We found a Steak ‘n Shake nearby that was just what Matt was looking for. By the time we got home, Matt was thoroughly exhausted

We were up early again on Sunday as Ann made breakfast casserole and then a few short hours later, took Dad back to the airport and said good-bye to him until May. We were so happy to have him in for the week and hope we can have him back next year again. I know he was ready to get back to the warm Florida sunshine and had obviously had enough of the white shit. In lieu of coming back on I-70 afterwards (which was closed due to a fatal accident), Luke, Abby and I decided to make our way back through town and ended up making an outing of it. We started with an early lunch inside Taco Bell then went across the street to Super Target. Next we found a Super K-Mart and ended up next door at a Super Goodwill Outlet – and OMG…what a shit hole that was…we couldn’t get out of there soon enough! It smelled awful and had nothing but really crappy stuff – but man, was it packed!! Now we know where the Bebouts live!!! We ended our venture in Shelbyville at Wal-Mart and then next door at Orange Leaf with some frozen yogurt. We came home and everyone took naps as we watched football. The kids played Hot Wheels, Legos and their electronic gadgets. The Colts won again, as did Peyton and the Broncos. Drew Brees set a record though the Saints lost. Adrian Peterson went after the single-season rushing record held by Eric Dickerson when he was an LA Ram – but ended up 9 yards short…however, the Vikings won the game and beat out the Bears for a playoff spot – sorry Dennis. Then in the game of the season for me, the Cowboys took on the Redskins for the 2nd time this season. This time, it was for a playoff spot – the winner plays next week against Seattle and the loser goes home to prep for 2013. As it turned out, the damn zone read option offense was way too much for the Cowboy defense and the linebacker blitz killed their offense as the depleted Cowboys fell to the Redskins by 10 points, ending their season. They are 2-11 in Week 17 games over the past 13 years – worst in the league obviously. Romo has lost 6 of 7 playoff games…time for a change? Time will tell. One of my favorite players was on the victorious defense – Ryan Kerrigan from Purdue – so I was at least happy for him… We also have lots of new Facebook pictures to share this week as well, including Chris Jason & Charlie and families; my buddy Brian in LP; Barney’s kids – now all grown up; the Cowboys’ only two Pro Bowl selections this year – Ware & Garrett; Luke & Abby on Bu’s new camera; Abby in Ann’s new glasses; and Dad from his new GS3. Following those are bunch of older pictures off of Gigi’s camera including Matt’s new letter jacket, the pep rally for the football team before Regionals; Megan at Thanxmas; and Santa’s visit to the station. And Matt was featured in the newspaper, along with the wrestling team and all the other winter sports team in the region.

Next up is our video section, which features six new home videos and a few from around the net this week…

For our Shit that Luke Says segment, our boy was at Memaw & Gigi’s house on Christmas Eve and we were talking about someone getting their way when he spits out in a fit of brinkmanship, “Well I’m the Queen!??? We let that hang in the air for a few seconds before we all started rolling!! We laughed so hard that I was in tears and my side hurt. 😉 It was so sweetly innocent…

Next is our Waybac section which continues to feature the works of Gil Hutton from his extensive collection. We have probably two more month’s worth before I will need to get in to another one of the boxes from Mom. Leading off this time again is another couple from Aunt Sue & Uncle Hank’s wedding in April if 1961; Aunt Judy from ’63; and Cathy from throughout 1964.

And that does it for another episode of the Scheu Family Blog. As always, thanks for keeping up with us this time out and we’ll catch up with you next time. Until then, have a good one. We miss ya, Mom.
Later, Scheu
