It’s Late September and I really should be Back at School…

As the end of the first nine weeks approached and the first full day of Fall came and went, we finally got some much needed rain but it had poor timing as it washed out my many pre-Joint Commission projects at work as well as the homecoming festivities at the high school. Health-wise, we’re all on the mend from some sort of ailment – Abby is on new meds and always has some new complaint it seems; Matt & Luke are sore from football and Ann & I are battling a nasty little bug that has us coughing/sneezing and going through the Kleenex like crazy! Have I mentioned lately how much I dislike Comcrap? Internet is on the fritz again – that’s 3 outages in the past month now. We had to wait a week for a service call and then they never showed up. I was mad as a hornet. Sports-wise, the big news has been the resurgence of our beloved Reds. My boy Jay Bruce has come alive in recent weeks and is a major contributor to why Cincinnati is in contention for the post season and may even win their division!
Abby celebrated her 14th birthday on Monday. She received some classic voicemails from both Grandma Owens and Grandpa Bryan…that is one of the things I miss from Mom. I knew that each year she would be calling to sing to me on my birthday and later for Annie and the kids. Matt and Luke both had football practice that warm afternoon. Abby & Ann went to Baker’s football game at South Decatur and then skipped jazz class and instead made a run for the border to get Bu her favorite takeout. She came home to open up her last present – a laptop! I stayed home for MNF due to feeling like crap, as is Bryan…he thinks it’s something in that damn Michigan air since we’ve both felt like shit since we returned from that trip! As promised, we have pictures here and video below of Bu’s birthday party from last Sunday.

We took Abby in early for Student Council on Tuesday. Matt had football again as did Luke & I. We went early to practice for team pictures with the Pirate truck! Ann made cheesy popcorn for dinner that night as we caught up on our DVR’ed shows. It was very hot today, up in to the mid-nineties for the second day in a row.
I was up far too early and in to work on Wednesday to perform our annual 12 hr generator testing. It was actually cold (49 degrees) when I fired up the van. It was a long, wet day that rained on and off all day long. With Philip on vacation this week and JCAHO coming in next week; this was a week from hell. Matt had football practice and Ann made a family favorite for dinner – Fiesta Pork! Annie took Bu shopping afterwards to get some clothes with her birthday money and Luke & I played catch with the football in the front yard until it was too dark to see. We have lots of new social media pictures this week, including Lindsay’s bachelorette party and with the Colt’s Donald Brown; Jason & Erica’s twins; an old one of Gigi; Braydon’s football picture; Allen & Taylor at home; Courtney & Cassie; Aunt Karen’s granddaughter Camille (Emily’s daughter); Kathy & Tom; Pat, Gino & the gang; Ann, Angie and the girls; our lovely and talented Bu; and old one of Matt & Abby; the Dance girls w/ Terry; Abby & Emma; the new ad for the new season of American Horror Story; Payton’s impressive opening night; the wonderful new Angry Birds Star Wars II game; and Abby with her boyfriend, Baker.

It rained early on Thursday and was so hot and humid that afternoon that when I left to come home, it felt like our bathroom after you step out of the hot shower. It was thick and hard to breath. It was under these conditions that Matt had football practice and then team dinner where the kids enjoyed Pizza King pizzas. Luke & I also had practice but Bryan ended up going easy on the kids. Abby & Ann went scrapbooking and then went to jazz dance at Dixon.
Matt had senior breakfast at BK again before school on Friday. I ran the kids to school and then went in to work to teach CPR. It ended up raining on and off all day again and got heavier as the evening approached. We did not tailgate beforehand for the first time this year because of the sloppy weather. Abby met Baker at the game – who came down to watch Matt and of course see Abby. Matt and the varsity Pirates looked great that night against a yound South Dearborn team. The senior boys dominated the offensive and defensive lines. Matt was in on a few tackles, again came close to an interception and got a tipped ball. But it was on offense where he had his best plays, IMHO. He had a phantom penalty called on him. That wasn’t the only bad call the referees had that night. They called a PAT no-good when it obviously went through the uprights. There were some very poor spots on running plays, but all that didn’t matter as the boys out-classed their opponents. Defensively, he was constantly double- and triple-teamed. Although that meant that his effectiveness was down, it opened up his teammates who flourished around him. The varsity starters played only 3 quarters and left with a 40-0 lead and a shutout intact. The JV played the South Dearborn starters and won 7-6 in the 4th quarter. It was on the last play with only a handful of seconds left and on 4th down that they attempted a field goal to try and avoid the shutout. We really wanted to blank them and although they botched the kick, they were able to run around the outside and actually scored as time expired. Although it rained on and off, it was never really that bad and we only used our umbrellas once for about 10 minutes or so. They postponed the homecoming activities for a few weeks, which was unfortunate. Afterwards, we went out for dinner to Wings & Rings for a beer and some hot wings. Matt met us out there and we talked about the game. We love to hear him tell his stories about all the things that you don’t see going on at the game.

Ann finally got some sleep overnight for the first time in a couple weeks. Matt stayed out pretty late with his buddies but was up and gone to football practice before I got up. Abby’s softball practice was cancelled. Matt got his last Christmas present from LAST YEAR finally as the new Grand Theft Auto game was released after multiple delays. Ann went scrapbooking and Matt was laid up on the couch nursing his body and playing the Xbox all day. The rest of us did our weekly chores around the house. We also planted mums around the light pole then went out for lunch at El Chile Poblano and on to A&W for rootbeer floats. Ann was scrapping next door so we ran a drink over to her. We came back home and watched World War Z, R.I.P.D. (with Marissa Miller!) and a couple other movies as we napped and generally took it easy the rest of the night. Matt ended up going over to stay the night at Joel’s house.
On Sunday, we were on the go again as Abby had travel-team softball practice in the morning. Afterwards, the girls picked up Baker and headed over to Brookville to catch up with Luke & I where the 4th grade Pirates took on the Franklin County Panthers. Luke & I rode up with Bryan and Drew. Thanks to Baker for video taping today’s game for us! Luke played offensive tackle, defensive end, nose guard, middle linebacker, special teams and kicker today. He was on the field the entire game until the final three plays when we put in our scrubs. I introduced a couple new defenses this week and the kids did a good job of running them. Bryan again ran the offense and I ran the defense. The offense would’ve dominated, if not for beating themselves. We still managed to score one TD and that was all that our outstanding defense needed today. We had two takeaways with an interception and a fumble recovery. We also knocked one of their best players out of the game with a broken collarbone. We had a long stoppage of play as they called an ambulance at the end of the 3rd quarter for the boy. We gave up only 2 plays over 20 yards and stopped them on 4th down 5 times. Luke led the defensive charge with 13 tackles! He had two big stops on 4th down, a nice open-field tackle after an interception and also recorded 3 tackles for loss, including 1 quarterback sack!! The Pirates won 8-0 to extend their unbeaten streak to four games and complete the first half of the season with a perfect 4-0 record! Afterwards, Ann dropped us off at home and took Abby & Baker horseback riding at her friend’s house. Luke & I went to Taco Bell and enjoyed a big dinner while debriefing about the game. We came home and watched the Colts while taking a nap. Luke’s basketball practice was cancelled so he went to Alex’s house to play. He came home in time to watch the Bears on Sunday Night Football and to watch today’s game tape. The gals didn’t get home till late and didn’t stay up too long before retiring for the night. I think Ann has pictures of the kids on the horses that I will share next week…

For the Shit that Luke Says, we actually have one from Bu this week. While Abby was shopping with Ann on Wednesday night, she made a couple cute comments: “I like shopping better when we use YOUR money, Mom” and “Oh look, lip balm!…oh wait, I’m paying…never mind…” :0)
