We had sad news to this week, as the patriarch on my mom’s side of the family passed away. Uncle Ralph Spoor died in the hospital from complications after suffering a broken leg at his assisted living home a few weeks ago. He was 83. We hadn’t seen Uncle Ralph since Aunt Norma’s funeral back in September of 2004. Our thoughts, prayers and condolences go out to Brenda, Karen & Cathy and the rest of the family. We really wanted to be there with all of them and to represent the Brown family, but sadly there was just no way possible to work it out…
In fact, this whole week seemed like it was littered with trips to see the doctor. I had routine labs drawn that came back very positive again!! J Ann went in for a routine dental checkup and just happened to have Bu with her. Abby was having trouble with a baby tooth that was blocking a big tooth from coming in. It was a good thing she went in, as the dentist decided that it needed to be pulled to prevent future issues with it coming in crooked. She was so funny as she was very specific with the instructions for the Tooth Fairy; wanting her to put her dollar in this teeny-weenie treasure chest – because apparently she had done it for Matthew many years ago. J Ann also had to go to the eye doctor a couple times this week. She had been having some eye problems and headaches, but everything came back good; so she is just looking forward to new contacts. …and Matt had his follow-up orthopedic appointment on Friday… Unfortunately, the news was not good for Matt. He will have to wait at least another three weeks for an another follow-up and is not to wrestle before he goes back…and that pretty much means that he is out for the rest of the season. He is bummed, but is trying to stay focused on getting healthy in time for track season and possibly running a 5K marathon with Abby.
Saturday was a busy day for Abby, as she and Ann were up early to go to a Cheer Clinic at the high school. She will be cheering at half time of this coming Tuesday’s home varsity basketball game! I was involved in training all week long. I trained a CPI class on Monday and a CPR class on Tuesday. Thursday, Friday & Saturday, I trained 2 classes each day on the new PSI corporate standards on seclusion / restraint. I hurried home on Saturday evening to grab Abby and head over to the YMCA’s annual Daddy / Daughter night. We were the last ones to arrive, but had plenty of time to work on our poster before they served our meal of spaghetti with breadsticks, salad & cookies. Afterward, we went swimming for a couple hours and then went up to the game room, where Bu proceeded to beat me at basketball, air hockey and a game of 8-ball. We were the last couple to leave and decided we would get a nightcap from Dairy Queen. J We came out to discover that it had snowed, melted and frozen while we were inside the previous 3 hours. I thought we were finally done with this white stuff, but it has remained cold the past week and the snow is still sticking as I type this up Sunday night. As for swimming for a couple hours last night, let’s just say that today, my best friend is Mr. Advil…
Anyhow, let’s get on to the Way Back feature, as I have plenty of pictures to share today.
First up are two pictures from early in 1968 of Grandmaw Bryan and Grandpa Scheu.
Here are a couple more pictures of Christmas at Granny’s house in ’72. The first is of my cousin David and Aunt Mary. The second has David’s sister, Cathy; along with my Grandmaw Brown and little Tommy.
Speaking of Grandmaw Brown, here are the first few pictures from a new batch I recently scanned from my cousin, Cathy Spoor’s, college graduation party. There are some really good ones of people I haven’t seen in a long, long time… The first one is Grandmaw Brown and her sister, Aunt Norma (Uncle Ralph’s wife). The second one is of Uncle Ralph. These were both taken at their home, on the outskirts of Lafayette in approximately June, 1977.
Here, we fast forward a year and 2000 miles to Christmas, 1978 in Temple City, CA.
Next we move forward another two years and another 2000 miles back across the country, for a couple pictures of our first winter back in Indiana, up at our Kenwood St. home in LaPorte.
Here is Grandpa Bryan with Rob at the LP fair grounds in July, 1981.
Here are Keith & Deanna at the Owens home on Main St., circa ’82.
Next is a high school yearbook picture from the spring of 1986 of my good friend Brad Cummings and myself under the hood of my ’64 Ford Galaxie 500 during auto mechanics class.
Here is another good friend of mine, Paul Drake, this time from college. Paul is in our F?T fraternity house in Franklin during the summer of 1989.
Here is a cute one of Rob & I with Mom, back home for Christmas in ’89 or ’90 (most likely).
Here is the one car I got to keep after graduating from college (long story). Rob & I are posing out in the front yard of our home in LP. That ’79 Chevy Impala had a sweet ride…
Here is another picture of Ann and her good friend Stacy at her bachelorette party in November of ’93.
Here’s a young Gigi at Christmas time when she and MaryAnn lived out here in Ryle Addition, circa ’94-ish.
Here I am playing some disc with my good friends at Atterbury State Park during my bachelor party in September of ’95.
Here we have Grandma Scheu with Lukey at Granny’s assisted living home in late July, 2003.
Next up are a couple pictures taken in August of 2003. The first is of the two older kids with Uncle Ralph at the Morgan family reunion. It was held several years in a row at a small country church, outside of Lafayette. The second one is of Bu and Dukey in our living room on Russell.
Skipping ahead another month to September of ’03, we have Abby’s birthday party at our home. Pictured with Bu are her good friends Elaine, Megan and Baili.
Here’s Matt & Keith at Disney World in June of 2004. This was at a Hawaiian luau that was really cool…the food was good too!! J
Next we fast forward a month to the last day in July of 2004 for Nathan & Steph’s wedding. Here is the groom with Bubby during the reception.
Here we have a couple from October 2004. The first is Matt helping Grandma & Gigi put up their Christmas tree (with his broken arm in a cast) and the second is all the kids with Grace in their Halloween costumes on the back porch of Grandma & Gigi’s house.
And finally, we end today’s long session with four pictures from a very busy day on May 27, 2006. Keith and Rosie were visiting from New York. The first is early in the morning of at the city park with Gracie and Megan. The second one is after lunch, at the putt-putt course with Abby & Matt. The third one is Grandma Owens in her dining room on Main St…and the last one is of the three amigos at dinner at Crabby Bill’s. That restaurant would close only a few months later. It would reopen as Acapulco Mexican restaurant and would quickly become our favorite dining establishment, here in town.
Well, that’s it for this installment of the Scheu family chronicle. Thanks as always for keeping up with us and we’ll get you caught up next time… Later, Scheu
I have been given “Ralph E Spoor” as a possible source of information, that he was possibly related to the Vice President Charles Curtis. I did not know of his death, can some related family member please contact me ASAP.
