Fall Leaves have Changed their Color…Winter’s on its Way…

We enjoyed a little slower pace these past couple weeks. It’s been a nice break to slow down a little, to be honest. It has given us time to do other things like exercise and work around the house. The weather has turned nasty as the temps took a nosedive. Matt continued rehabbing his knee, Abby is focusing her attention on school and dance, and Luke continued with basketball. We geared up for the upcoming holidays by getting out the Christmas decorations, in preparation for Keith & Rosie coming in to town for our annual Thanxmas celebration at Mom & Sandy’s. But we start off two Sundays ago where we dodged some really bad storms. There were several deaths associated with over two dozen confirmed tornadoes. We spent about 20 minutes ourselves, hunkered down in our safe place, all together. It obviously brought back memories and talk about the storms that ripped through here a couple years back around Memorial Day. Thankfully, the only “damage” was a knocked over patio chair. Unfortunately, Kokomo and Lafayette (to a lesser extent) didn’t fare so well. We got a hold of Sharon & Dan, who said they were OK but a state of emergency had been declared in the city. We also saw several storm damage pictures of Lafayette, which also saw severe weather. We tried to call Dad & Barb, but did not get a response. We figured the power was likely out for them. We did talk with someone at the Parkside Deli, who said they were OK. We were up late to watch Peyton’s Ponies beat the previously undefeated Chiefs in a tight game and Johnson won his 6th NASCAR championship.
After being near 70 degrees over that weekend, last Monday was considerably cooler…and quite blustery. Abby was in early for Student Council and then had jazz class after school and attended a boys’ basketball game after practice. Matt returned to wrestling practice (more as a coach for now) and continued his stretching and icing of the knee as part of his rehabilitation. Luke had basketball practice at the elementary school. I finally got a hold of Dad & Barb…well, Barb anyhow, on Monday afternoon. They are doing well and didn’t have any issues with the storms other than a power outage, which is still affecting several of my family members in Tippecanoe County. It was good to catch up with Barbie. We had a good talk. Dad is finally selling the Parkside and retiring. We are so happy for them and thrilled at the idea that we might just see more of them now! We had popcorn night (always a favorite here at our home) as we watched the Panthers beat the darned Patriots…it was a good night…
Abby was in early again on Tuesday for Student Council. Matt had physical therapy and then wrestling practice. Matt did his stretches and is coming along very nice. On Wednesday, Matt got to go without his crutches all day (and no falls)! He had wrestling practice and I am still on the treadmill. Ann had her annual Thanksgiving party at work where Dr. Dan made his tur-duck-en again this year for the staff.
Matt went to the dentist before school on Thursday morning and got a good check-up. He later had physical therapy before heading over to wrestling practice. He was pretty sore that night. Abby had tap practice at Dixon with Ann and Luke had basketball practice at the junior high school.
On Friday, Matt headed over to Columbus for an appointment with his surgeon, Dr. Guse. Matt’s goal was to achieve 90 degrees in his knee’s range of motion…and that little overachiever actually surpassed it by 20 degrees! He is well on his way back now! He had his staples removed, which he was thrilled with… Guse is very happy with his progress. He made it back in time to go with the team to Madison for a quad-meet. Not only did the Pirates face the host school but also Shawe Memorial and Switzerland County. I am happy to report that the grapplers are off to a perfect 3-0 start! We ended up getting pizzas for dinner. We have several social media pictures to share with you this time out, including Abby’s new Snow White hairdo; Matt in Ann’s first panoramic shot with her new iPhone; Jamie; Ann’s staff; Lindsay, Kimmy’s son and Barney’s granddaughter; Allen with the Columbus mayor; Wayne during bow season; Franklin College who made the Division III playoffs again and hosted a playoff game for only the 4th time and won!; the Slicer football home page which still has a couple of my old records!; Linda’s new view outside her new AZ home; Dr. Who’s 50th anniversary, which included a special show, all kinds of spin-offs and a Whodle (a Dr. Who Google doodle); more Abby stuff; Kimmy & Lindsay at the Pacer’s game – the Pacers have only lost one game this year!!; the recently engaged Seth (Sue’s grandson); Barney’s oldest with her two children; Katie’s kids asleep in the back seat; my cousin Kathy and her son; Mr. Brody getting ready for surgery; and Kristen Stewart sporting an awesome Zeppelin shirt…

We did our weekly household chores on Saturday before putting up the Christmas tree. Although it initially felt a little early for it, we put on some of our favorite Christmas tunes and it began to snow…which helped to put us in the holiday spirit. Luke and I went over to Bryan’s new building where the coaches took on the protégés in a game of 2-hand touch football…which the coaches easily won… But I couldn’t stay; I had to get back to get out the rest of the seasonal decorations. Luke & Drew practiced baseball there before heading back to Drew’s house. Ann finally got her lease signed for her new outreach office here in town, which is nearly next door to Memaw & Gigi. We had Taco Bell for lunch and Wendy’s for a late dinner. Luke later joined Ann, Abby & I in getting all our decorations up. It was Luke’s turn to put up the ugly orange bulb this year. Matt decided to skip out on us and stayed the day/night with his buddy Andy. Luke eventually got tired and we allowed him to retire for this year – but not before he set the manger scene up, including a new angel inside with baby Jesus… He ended up having a “sleepover” in Abby’s room that night. It was nice to see those two getting along for once. The lights really put the cussing back in to Christmas this year. We had several issues with our lights and just as we got it all decorated…another damn strand went out!

Although we had a chance to sleep in on Sunday, Luke & I were up early (we both crashed out early last night) and ended up playing Blur on the X-box. We bummed around the whole morning before heading over to Connersville where Luke and his 4th grade Pirate travel team were playing in the Spartan Bowl. The kids (and parents) were thrilled to be playing in that huge building again. First up was Lincoln. The Pirates were never threatened in the opener. They pulled out to a large lead and were up by 20 at halftime. By the time it ended, it was a blow-out – 46-12! Luke had 8 points on 4-6 shooting from the field! He turned the ball over 4 times but forced three others. He looked great on defense with 3 steals, a foul and 11 rebounds!! In the second game, they squared off against Northeastern where we again had no trouble dismissing the opponent, 28-11. Luke went 0-3 from the field, forced a turnover, had a pair of steals and grabbed 5 rebounds. We stopped by a Mexican restaurant there in town for an early dinner (they were later games) before heading back home to catch our favorite TV shows Simpsons, Sunday Night Football and Family Guy – the latter had a very sad ending as they killed off my favorite character, Brian Griffin (the dog).

This Monday, Abby was in early for a Student Council function and it allowed me to go in early as well to get a jump on all the work we squeezed in to this short week. She had tap dance that evening with Ann. Matt had physical therapy, which really wiped him out, so he came home instead of catching the end of wrestling practice. I was very disappointed to hear that Matt was shunned by the wrestling team as a captain for his senior year. This comes on the heals for I thought he should’ve been a captain last year, but I’m sure every parent feels that way – so I chalked it up to that…however, I was sure he would be named one this year. Just consider he resume – 6 years in the program (under the same coach); he has come back from injury twice before during the wrestling season and is doing it again this year; he qualified for Semi-state as a sophomore but had a broken shoulder; he wrestled with that injured shoulder all last year and made it to Regionals before we pulled him out of competition; he has over 50 varsity victories and 100 total in the program; he has volunteered in the pee-wee league as a coach the last three years, and is a friendly, positive role model at school…I don’t see it…and this is after he was also denied a captain’s spot on the football team – where he didn’t miss a practice (even optional ones!) in four years. But I digress. Luke had basketball practice at the elementary school later that evening. And Stacy’s daughter, Darby, has committed to Anderson…we are hoping Matt might consider it as well and possibly stoke the flames of love between those two…they’d make such a cute couple…besides, we’d love the in-laws! :0) It snowed on and off all day and was very cold.
Natalie’s son, Brody, had heart surgery on Tuesday, and is now recovering after a successful intervention. We wish Mike, Nat and their family all the best during this hard time. Abby was in early for Student Council again. Matt had wrestling practice and took his sister to the high school basketball game, where the Pirates absolutely destroyed North Decatur. Keith & Rosie were in town early, as they tried to stay ahead of the big winter storm that was headed our way. I worked late to get everything done by the end of the month and met up with everyone at Mom & Sandy’s house where Gigi’s Gourmet was open! We ate like kings…something this is very common with our family at this time of the year. We had snow flurries again today to go along with a cold, nasty breeze that dropped the wind chill pretty low.
Wednesday was a short day at work. Bryan got together with a few teachers to put on an event at the junior high school for all the students that turned in 100% of their work this year. Bryan set up the sound and light systems, had a guy there to run each, played drums and helped to organize the event. They ran through three songs and then did an encore. They sounded great. I was pretty mad that I had set up at the perfect spot and had been there for nearly two hours when just as the event was ready to start, an adult with a small child came in and stood right in front of me and held the child even higher the entire time. By that time, I was surrounded with people standing so there was no way to move. I was pissed…but the child probably had a good view of things. Abby, on the other hand, was busy working as an usher as a member of Student Council – and was able to sit in the “VIP” section – which was the front row! She got some really good pictures and videos from up there. For the final number (The Fox), his son Myles sat in on drums and did an excellent job!! The kids loved it and were really loud. I signed Bu out of school and got Luke from Memaw and headed to Taco Bell (Abby’s idea…but I hadn’t had lunch yet, so I was game). We came back home and Abby had her BFF Megan over for a couple hours and Luke went to Alex’s house. Ann went out Thanxmas shopping and I took the kids back over to Mom & Sandy’s house for dinner. We talked for a couple hours and then I came home to exercise and brought Luke & Megan back to play X-box. There was snow on and off again all day today…not enough to do cause any delays or even play in the yard with…just enough to collect on the edges of the roads. We missed the big stuff, which apparently went up to my old stomping grounds – LaPorte – which apparently got 18” of lake-effect snow!

Ann & Sandy went shopping on Thanksgiving morning, as they have done for 20-some years now. The kids slept in but I was up with the dogs before dawn and couldn’t go back to sleep. Luke & I went out Hot Wheels hunting and found a few new treasures before heading over to Mom & Sandy’s for lunch. As always, they had everything…turkey, ham, dressing, mashed potatoes, noodles, sweet potatoes, rolls, green bean casserole, pecan pie, pumpkin pie, pumpkin roll, sugar cookies, no-bake cookies and more! After lunch was Bingo. Ann, Abby and Luke were the big winners this year. We watched the Lions until halftime and came home to take naps…but not before we got our annual Owens Grandkids picture on the couch (which in turn allowed me to create our annual Jib Jab cartoon). The Lions won their game and we watched the start of the Cowboys game until halftime. Luke and I played a little catch out in the front yard, but it was too cold to stay out long. Matt left and went out with his buddies to go shopping all night. We went back over to Memaw & Gigi’s house for dinner. They had the chocolate fountain up and running. Those cold turkey sandwiches were well worth the wait! Yum!! The Cowboys won their game and then we started our Thanxmas festivities. The kids opened up their gifts and then we started our White Elephant gift exchange. The theme this year was “Hold on.” We saw all sorts of variations, but the funniest was the present Maryann selected – that of a jockstrap and cash. Luke and Uncle Keith put together his Lego truck. We watched the Raven’s game until halftime (well, I saw part of it in between naps) and then came home.

Ann & Amy were up early again for Black Friday shopping this year. They again had hideous head gear and had fun fighting the crowds, though they opted out of any of the door buster sales. They called shortly after their day began and said they had a flat tire on the Pacifica. I urged them to change it or to call the roadside service that we have on our insurance policy. But that wasn’t fast enough for them, they wanted a more personal touch…so I got up and got dressed and drove over to Columbus with Abby (who also got up when the phone rang). We got the tire changed in no time but boy was it flipping cold outside! We traded cars with them, did some Hot Wheels hunting at Target and Kmart but came away empty, and limped the car back home with the donut on the front. Both stores were very busy but people were mostly courteous. We came back, picked up Luke and went to the junior high to help Bryan get his trailer packed back up with his audio/video equipment from the concert on Wednesday. Matt picked up leftovers at Memaw’s house and brought them home for lunch. Megan came over to spend the afternoon with Abby and Luke went to Alex’s house for the same period. The girls later went bowling and soon afterward I received a text, asking if I would take a bunch of the girls out to the movies. So we crammed the crippled Pacifica full of girls and limped down to the movie theatre. I’m not sure how many of them piled in, but it was full of loud, teenage girls. Luke came back from Alex’s house, Matt went to Andy’s house for the night, Ann returned from her shopping trip with fewer bags than I expected, and Abby and her friends caught a ride with someone else…so I went to bed (I was already falling asleep on the couch, so it wasn’t a stretch).

We travelled up to Lafayette on Saturday for a big Scheu family wedding. John & June’s youngest daughter, Lindsay got married to her long-time boyfriend, Jack. But that is a story for next time…

Next up is our video section, which features two family movies as well as a ton of other vids from around the internet.

For our Shit that Luke Says feature, we present to you the following scenario. We were facing severe weather and an imminent tornado warning… Abby says, “I want to go to Grandma’s house…our (house) is scary…there’s no basement.” Ann says, “You just wanna go to Grandma’s to eat!” Then Luke says, “Besides Abby, we have an attic we can use!” 😉

Next up is our Waybac section, which again features several old photos of Mom and her family. We lead off with an old picture of our Morgan family relatives from the early 1940s (with Connie (Grandmaw), Norma, Keith and Great Grandma & Grandpa); Grandpaw in the newspaper in 1950s (soap box derby car champ); two unknown family friends’ children from the ‘50s; Mom in her front yard and porch on Elmwood (which was on the outskirts of town when this was taken, circa 1951); Mom on a Sears & Roebuck calendar in 1955; Grandmaw in her Elmwood kitchen in March of ’57; Great Grandma & Grandpa Morgan’s family farm in March of 1957 with all their grandkids (at the time) – Sandy (Mom), Brenda & Karen (what a super picture this one is!!!); the 3 amigos outside of the Morgan farm later in ’57; a picture of (I think) Grandpaw and Mom’s dog in about ’57; Grandpaw Brown’s 36th birthday in July of 1959 at the summer cottage with Mom, Grandpaw, Great Grandma Brown, Marilou, Kenny, Midge and her first husband; next we have a slide of Dad O from 1959 which features Greensburg’s Centennial Celebration in 1959; Grandpaw Brown in the newspaper in June of ’63; my birthday cake (very cool, Mom!! And appropriate for the big Thanksgiving Day football game with the Cowboys!) for my 14th birthday in October of 1982; Robby showing off his cool sticker on Thanksgiving Day in our Rockwood home in November of 1982; Abby’s preschool pictures in the fall of 2003 at the YMCA (what a cutie- before the sassy days!); Matt on the Washington soccer field in October of 2003; Bu with her Grandma Bryan at their house on the hill in Rossville at the Bryan Christmas in December of 2003; Christmas Day lunch at Mom & Sandy’s house on Main St in December of 2004 with Robby, Sandy, Curtis & Danny; and finally we have our Bu again – Mom & Dad B and Mom & Sandy were present for this evening’s festivities…set at the high school football field (Shriver Field) during halftime of a varsity game, Matt played in his pee-wee football team while Abby cheered on the sidelines in September of 2007…good bunch of pictures this time out…so many memories…

And that does it for this week’s episode of the Scheu Family Blog. This was a tough couple weeks, thinking about Mom and really, really missing her…holidays are always tougher because of the all the great memories…I was wishing we could have just one more Turkey Day with her…but knowing those days are gone now…I know I’ve teared-up on numerous occasions these past few days, thinking of past Thanksgivings and fighting back the yearning to have those moments back… Anyhow; thanks for keeping up with us this time out and we’ll catch up with you again next time. Until then, have a good one.
Later, Scheu
