No Fair, you can’t Hear me but I can You

We enjoyed a fun summer week here at the Scheu abode this week. The big news of the week was the return of the county fair and all that comes with this time of year. Besides the fair activities, we continued doing our normal things also – Luke: baseball; Abby: Pirateers; Matt: work; Ann: scrapbooking; and me: enjoying every minute of it…
On Monday; Matt, Ann & I returned to work. We made sure that Luke & Bu didn’t miss out, by giving them a list of things to while we were out for the day. We started our long-awaited dining room project that day at work. Abby found her ribbon from her dance revue and Luke & Drew were in the newspaper again – this time they were captured riding bikes in the Independence Day parade.
I started my cardiac rehab finally on Tuesday. I am taking it at CRH and am glad I opted to go there in lieu of Decatur County – not that I’m sure they have a good program, but I feel much more at home over there for some reason. Abby had Pirateers practice at the high school and Luke had a scrimmage game at the ball diamonds. They faced off against the 9U travel team, the Greensburg Titans. Luke was the starting pitcher – the first time he has pitched on the al-star team. We limited him to 60 pitches, which got him through their entire lineup once. He looked pretty good with several strikeouts. At the dish, he was 1-2 with single that nearly hit the fence but he had slower teammates in front of him, so he couldn’t go any further (he might have stretched it to a triple?). Bryan & I sat in the outfield, under the big shady trees and talked football. Later that evening, Paul and the boys stopped by after practice in Columbus to pick up his camera and DVDs and to drop off a few classic photos of us from college. He dropped off a couple books’ worth, but I think there is still more at his house that I need to find yet. I will be sharing these in the Waybac section with the other photos from Mom.

On Wednesday, Luke stayed the night with Drew out at Angie’s mom’s house. Abby ended up staying the night at her friend Kama’s house. Ann was back on the grill again, marking the 4th straight day of using our new device! That night, though, it was NY strip steaks!!
I met Angie out at the high school on Thursday night, to get Luke. He started a basketball camp with the assistant high school coach, Macintire. There were a few kids from his travel team and a few from the team a year older than Luke. We hope this will build his skill set, his confidence and get him more playing time this winter with coach Hellmich. Originally, he didn’t want to even do basketball this year – much less go to a specialized, nearly individual, summer camp. Abby was also out at the high school, practicing with her Pirateers teammates and the band as they get ready for the coming weekend’s fair parade. The fair returned to town that night. We could see the bright lights and hear the grandstand speakers from the backyard. We have a ton of new social media pictures this week: Abby and the boy next door; Aunt June and Lynz; Aunt Sue; Aunt Sally & Scotty; Jack & Lynz; several from Bayley’s wedding with Bill, Barney & Kimmy; Nate & Steph at Motley Crue’s final concert in this area; a couple old photos of Katie; Jason & Erica’s oldest girl; Bev Linville from back in the 60’s; a nice write-up about Tyson in the Lafayette newspaper; Metallica playing in the rain in Europe; the Reds on a winning streak – led by my favorite player, Jay Bruce; the Reds’ all-stars (no Jay Bruce); Abby with and without her friends; Seth & his fiancée; Brody minus a couple teeth and his momma a few years back; Barney with Bayley at their second home here lately – Wrigley Field; the winning coaches in the 10U division; Skeeter McGee a few years ago; the new line of Hot Wheels based on Star Wars characters coming soon; Chapman set a new record this week; a classic poster bill with a phenomenal lineup; and an appropriate joke for this time of year…

My first official cardiac rehab workout began on Friday morning. The previous session was more of an individual evaluation, whereas today I was with other patients in the program and got to meet the three-person team I will be working out with. My workouts consist of work on the treadmill, the stationary bike and elliptical – along with stretching and light weightlifting. The kids really wanted to go to the fair that evening to see the demolition derby, but I just wasn’t up for it – being a little more tired from rehab than I had originally thought it was. Ann had late-night scrapbooking at Mr.s B’s with Shawna and crew. Luke, Ann & I went out to Wal-Mart for a few things and picked up Subway for dinner. I had a veggie delight, which is less than delightful. I’d much prefer to have a spicy Italian…but the kids are all over my ass to stay on my diet. I’m not sure if Ann is bribing them or what, but I can’t get away with anything these days! We came back and Abby & I began watching the Harry Potter marathon an ABC Family, which she just loved. We watched several hours of that marathon over this weekend…despite the fact that we have them all in our movie collection already. Go figure. I fell asleep on the couch and slept great that night. In fact, with help from the C-pap I can honestly say that I cannot remember feeling this good in many, many years. I know the smoking had a little to do with hit, but the lack of sleep was really starting to take its toll on my body. Being back in the bed has helped, but now both Ann and I are sleeping well which is awesome news for our family.
We took it easy on Saturday morning by sleeping in a little. Luke and Abby again did a few chores around the house to help get it looking better. Abby and I ran a few errands and she did some driving again. She did a little last night as well. We’ve been trying to get a little practice in the truck. I need to get her out a little more. She is pretty good little driver and is starting to figure it out. Ann again went scrapbooking. Matt worked and then took a long nap. Meanwhile, Luke, Bu and I went out to the fairgrounds. Thanks to Memaw & Gigi for the ride tickets!! We went through the booth stations so we could get our annual yard stick, pencils and fly swatter. Angie was working the YMCA booth (she is on the board) where we met up with Drew. Luke & Drew ran off to the midway to do their thing. Abby & I took a much calmer approach and enjoyed walking and people watching. We grabbed some grub (she wouldn’t let me get all the goodies I wanted to get), rode the bumper cars, played a couple games (she won another goldfish), signed up Luke for football, talked to a bunch of people and eventually made our way over to the stage to watch Bryan and his band Skeeter McGee play for a couple hours. We sat up in the front row and tried to mess with the guys. But they were true professionals and gave it right back to us. Matt joined us, as did his buddy Katie (the girl next door and the new Ms. Decatur County) and her family. Luke & Drew only came in to get money to return to the midway. I was impressed to hear that Luke threw a baseball 50 mph at the speed gun game! Bryan and the boys sounded great and we had a good time, listening late in to the evening.

We slept in again on Sunday. Happy birthday to our niece, Grace. She turned 14 today. This morning, Abby and I ran to Wal-Mart to get fish food and drop the truck off at WTRE. She again did a great job of driving the old Silverado. I parked it up by the road, in the ditch again so we could again be up in the front row for the annual Fair Parade. Ann took Abby early to lineup with the Pirateers and march with them and the band about two miles down park road to the fairgrounds. Luke decided not to ride with his football teammates. He and Drew decided instead to sit with us in order to catch candy and boy did it pay off. They both came home with a freezer bag full of loot! Memaw also decided skip participating in the parade and wanted to sit with us in the back of the Chevy, under the gazebo. We saw lots of folks we know and got lots of comments about our setup again this year. Highlights included: Katie from down the street in the Ms Decatur Co Camaro; Sandy in the WTRE Crossfire; Emma Hellmich driving in support of a County Council candidate; Rick & Lynn Bewley as well as Bryan & Rich for Jimmy John’s – including Lynn’s VW Bug; Angie with the YMCA crowd; loads of the boys’ friends on the Youth Football float; Abby and the Pirateers; Phyllis & Dick riding on the Tebbe float; and many more. There were lots of entries this year, which accounted for all the candy the boys collected. I think they were glad they made this choice. We came back and cooled down (it was very hot), just barely beating the storm home. Drew came home with us and spent the night. Ann made tacos and we took it easy, watching NASCAR and our normal Sunday night TV shows.

Next up is our Waybac section. We lead off this week with a few from Rob’s first few months out in California. These were taken by the girlfriend of the lady in the 3rd picture, who worked with Dad. I have forgotten their names right now, but you can see some classic shots of Mom, Rob & I in our home in Temple City in March of 1980; then we have more of our first visit home as a foursome – these were taken out front of Aunt Lou (Atha)’s house in April of 1980 and again has great classic pictures of Mom, Rob & I along with Grandmaw & Grandpaw Brown and of course Lou; then we have Dad sleeping in Grandmaw’s chair with Schnapp’s in June of 1980; then Mom, Rob & Nathan at Pine Lake Beach and then Nathan passed out later with Pooh looking out for him in our big Kenwood St home in LaPorte in August of 1980; then on to June of 1981 in Lafayette in the old Bryan home where Vird & Belinda had moved in – with Belinda, Dad & I, Sharon & Katie and then Dad & Robby sleeping on the floor of our living room on Kenwood; then Rob & I visiting Aunt Lou in August of ’81; and also me with my Allis Chalmers teammates as we played baseball at Larson-Danielson field in LaPorte – I normally played 1st base unless our shortstop pitched and then I had to play short – looks like this was one of those times, also in August of ’81 (LP has never really been the same since the Allis Chalmers plant – and later the big foundry for it – closed a few years later)…note the Galaxie 500 parked behind our bench; next is a rare picture of Mom with her Grandma Brown as well as Rob & Grandpaw out at Great Grandma Brown’s house in August of ’83 – a house that no longer stands out by Marilou & Kenny’s house in Rossville; also Grandpaw, Rob & I in our new home on Rockwood St in August of ’83 and then Rob & Mom in her old Elmwood Ave home in August of ’83 (a busy month for us); our Rockwood St home – before the siding but after the trees were removed and the original chain link fence in September of ’83; Dad, Rob & Grandpaw on Christmas morning on Rockwood in 1984; Rob & Dad during our trip to Disney in April of 1986; next another great picture of the crew at White Birch Village in Wisconsin in the summer of 1988 with Mom, Dad, Rob, & I with Aunt Dorothy & Uncle Kenny and Tammy & Brett; then a few new ones from Paul’s collection – the Phi Delta Theta spring formal in Indy in 1989 with Paul, Rob Luedke and I along with our small, tight-knit chapter at the time; also from that batch is Paul & Justin Kriet at Ann & I’s wedding reception in September of ’95 in Columbus; also an old photo at Abby’s birthday party at our new house on Russell Dr in September of 2001; then Christmas morning in 2002 with Matt, Abby, Mom & Dad; next is Mom & Dad at the Sand Pebble in Treasure Island in 2003; Abby’s birthday party in 2003 with Grace, Bu & I; then the Bryan family Christmas in Mom & Dad’s house in Rossville with Mom, Vird, Belinda & Deena Marie, Dan, Steph & Hayley, Kate & Jake and Rob with his girlfriend and her daughter in about 2003, I think; we also have some pictures from that same Christmas in Greensburg with images of Matt & I; followed by an undated photo of Matt, Bu & I in our 1st pool in about 2003; and finally a few photos of Nathan’s swearing-in ceremony in June of 2004.

…And that does it for this week’s installment of the Scheu Family Blog. Thanks for keeping up with this time out and we’ll catch up with you next time. Until then, have a good one. We miss ya, Momma.
Later, Scheu
