And I Feel so Much Depends on the Weather

We endured a severe cold snap this week that sent the temps plummeting below zero with wind chills at dangerous levels. Its effects could be felt in everything we did, of course. Ann, I and the kids tried to slowly get back in to the swing of things but we all decided we preferred to stay at home if we could manage it somehow. Hello again and welcome back to the latest installment of the Scheu Family Blog. It was another fast week:
Monday was the last day off for Luke & Abby. It was a cold, full-moon Monday morning as I returned to work and didn’t slow down all day. Meanwhile Matt ran Ann up to Indy for an outpatient procedure with an oral surgeon. She was pretty sore but thankfully her jaw was still numb to mask most of the pain. She’s pretty tough, though; so we knew she’d be fine. Luke’s basketball practice was cancelled but I did run Abby to her jazz class at Dixon Studio. Matt had the boys over and then they went out later. Abby & I then played Mario Kart and Ann went to bed.
It was back to school and work for everyone on Tuesday. It snowed overnight and all the way in to work. It was much colder today. Abby had Pirateers and Mom & Sandy finally got their living room furniture!
Wednesday was a cold, cold day. We had a wind chill advisory for a couple days. The day’s temperatures were in the single digits with wind chills in the negative teens. It eventually fell in to the negative twenties overnight so we let the hot water run at all the taps that night. Ann had a follow-up appointment where she actually got her stitches out already. Her is face is still numb but will hopefully get the feeling back…eventually. It was soup night for the Homework Club. Despite not feeling well, Ann still made some great potato soup. Again only Britney made it over to study with Bu. Matt had Devin over for dinner and Mario Kart. Luke & I could’ve worked out with Drew & Bryan at the warehouse (baseball), but Luke pulled a Matthew by telling us that his Science Fair assignment was due tomorrow…so we stayed home and did his experiment instead.
Thursday would’ve been Elvis’ 80th birthday. Abby had Pirateers after school and then went on to tap class with Ann. I got on the treadmill again, which was the 4th time this week. So I again met my goal on exercising…now if I could just curb this appetite!
Luke had basketball practice right after school on Friday. Ann went scrapbooking after work. The Silverado broke down on my way home from work that night on a bitterly cold evening. The temps were only in the single digits so it got cold real quick out there. Thankfully Matt came all the way to Columbus to help me after he got done with wrestling practice. We found the top radiator hose had come loose and it lost all the antifreeze so we ran to Wal-Mart and by my work so we could repair it in the frigid temperatures. It really could’ve been a LOT worse. Thankfully, it happened shortly after leaving work so I was able to limp to the 650 North bar / Simmons Winery parking lot. To show my gratitude, I took him and his siblings to dinner at El Chile Poblano. I can’t wait until I can buy him a margarita out there… We have a bunch of new social media pictures to share this week: dinner out with the kids; Luke; Abby/Kama; Abby’s besties; Kimmy and nephew; Bryan & Angie with kids at BSU game; Aunt Sharon’s grandkids; Jamie with Sadie Beagle – who had a health scare recently (the dog, not Jamie!); Angie (Morgan) with her girls; the Pirateers clinic (we remember when Abby attended this as a little girl); some Columbian Park photos from years back (my old stomping grounds); the comic that led to the tragic incident in France; Stew’s death; Ellie Mae died; another classic Calvin & Hobbes panel; Romo “Romo-ing??? and Neil Peart is contemplating going back on the road with the boys one more time…

We were up early on Saturday for Abby’s Pirateers competition in Rossville. She rode with teammates in the bus and Ann & I followed a few hours later. It was good to be back in familiar territory. We saw Mom & Dad’s “Dream house??? as well as the house they built “Up on the hill.??? We saw Uncle Kenny’s house too (so many memories). All three residences looked pretty good. We met Dad & Barb at the high school as we again dedicated a day to watching Abby & the Pirateers perform their two routines. I have to say that they looked much better – and their scores showed it as they came in 2nd in both 2A pom-poms and 2A hip-hop! Way to go, Bu! We ate at Treece’s afterwards (where Rob used to work) and said good-bye to Dad & Barb before we headed back home. We made it back to Greensburg in time to take Abby to the varsity basketball game so she could hang out with her friends and then hurried to the house to catch the end of the Patriots/Ravens game. Matt stayed home with Luke for us and then had his friends over to watch the Panthers/Seahawks game later. Meanwhile, Ann & I fell asleep quickly on the couch.
We awakened to a text from Trevor on Sunday that said all of Luke’s basketball games in Rushville had been cancelled so our matchup with Rushville and Connersville A will have to wait. The threat of a big winter storm cancelled all the league’s games for the weekend. It was the best thing that could’ve happened to be honest. It allowed me to work around the house and for the boys & I to watch the Cowboys/Packers and yell at the TV for three hours. It was a good game. Dallas had several bad calls by the referees and it cost them the game. Well that and no running the ball enough in key situations. Matt left between games to stay ahead of the impending storm. Luke & I watched the Colts/Broncos game. Peyton did not look good in the evening game and in fact most of Denver’s squad looked old and tired. Conversely, the Colts looked pretty good as they advanced to the AFC Championship game next week! Meanwhile Ann took Abby & Kirsten to Enochsburg for volleyball. Their St Mary’s team was again victorious, going 2-1 in games to open the season with a 2-0 record. Afterwards they went to Cincinnati for dinner and dress shopping – Abby is going to Winter Formal and needs a new dress. They got home before it got real slick. Matt made it back to school safely also. He had to head back a little early to get unpacked, work on his fridge (they cut power and the boys left it closed up when they left – gross! The storm was supposed to bring with it up to ˝ inch of ice with snow afterwards. Not sure how much they eventually got but we heard Lafayette got hammered. It was sad to see him leave again after being home for nearly a month. The house is too quiet without him and the family again seems incomplete. We can’t wait for him to come home again next time…
