Thanks to You, I’m much Obliged…

We had a short work/school week and we enjoyed spending a bunch of quality family time together. Matt was back and the family was whole again. Luke had a bye week from basketball games. Abby had a dance routine…well sort of… Ann got around a little bit better as she continues to ice both of her knees. And I enjoyed all the great food this week! Hello again, happy Thanksgiving to you and your family and welcome back to another installment of the Scheu Family Blog.
Monday was a cold start to the week. We had a hard frost overnight and it was a rude awakening as we went to go out and jump in the cars for school/work. Abby had Pirateers after a long day of classes. Luke had basketball practice that evening and later Ann & Abby went to Dixon Dance for jazz class while I got back on the treadmill.
Tuesday was another cold day of defrosting / warming up cars before running the kids to school. Abby had Pirateers after school again and then went out to dinner with her friend Kara, who was home from college. Luke had Brenden over to play outside and spend the night while I walked on the treadmill. We have lots of new social media pictures to share this week: Abby & the Pirateers; Devin; Aunt June; Emily & family; Bethany & friend; Angie’s girls; Calvin & Hobbes panel; Abby & friends; Katie & family; Nathan’s girls; a couple Turkey Day greetings; Uncle John, Aunt June, Barney & family; half of the Timm girls; David & daughter; Rob & Sharon in Miami; Jake & Katie and kids; Emily’s daughter; the Yoakum’s; Dawnan & family’s view of the Macy’s parade in NYC; Ann & crew at Stacy & Danny’s wedding in ’93; and Cathy & Tom on the beach.

The kids were off on Wednesday for Thanksgiving break. I took off as well to spend time with them. Ann was supposed to be off with us but at the last minute had to go in to work. I helped Memaw with her computer and then exercised in the neighborhood on a cool but pretty morning. The boys also were out, playing with neighborhood kids and ended up running around outdoors all morning and in to the afternoon. Matt came home from school for the long weekend. We all played basketball for about an hour out in the driveway. Luke helped move the cars in the driveway, which he was thrilled about. Abby went out with Cody for lunch then came home to play Mario on the Wii. I ran Molly to the vet for a f/u on her ear. We noticed that the tip of the ear was not standing up as it had before but the doctor seems to think she will be fine. Poor Molly was so scared I was going to leave her that she was shaking terribly. She was so happy to get out of there! Matt went out for “Friends-giving” to Stones in Milhousen. Abby went out with a few of her Pirateers friends to ElRep before they danced at the girls’ basketball game vs. EC later that night. It was a special night for our little Bu. Abby co-choreographed the dance and we were very excited to see her hard work pay off. I created two CDs of their music and they used both of them for warm-ups. But after the girls walked out on to the floor, wouldn’t you know it…the damn CD wouldn’t play. One of the girls ran and got the back-up disc…but the same thing happened. They waited and waited in very awkward silence. Although the parents and fans on our side were supportive, some of our own kids in the cheer block across the court and some of the adults from EC were pretty mean and the girls became upset and embarrassed as they were forced to walk back off the court without performing. Abby was visibly upset, as was her co-collaborator Mary (Luke’s girlfriend’s older sister). We still aren’t sure why it didn’t play but we will put it on an iPod or something and just use an auxiliary cord instead of depending on a CD in the future. Abby said this has happened a few times recently and says it is an issue with the player itself. We took the kids to BWR to try and cheer them up and I think it helped a little. She will have a chance to perform it again at a future boys’ ball game. Let’s hope we have better luck next time…

We woke up to a lovely Thanksgiving Day on Thursday. It was the warmest we could remember in recent memory. It made it all the way up to the mid-sixties. Ann & Sandy were up and out early for their traditional trek to Rural King (formerly it was K-Mart). Meanwhile, Luke & I watched the Macy’s Parade while the other two slept in. Ann cooked green bean casserole and dinner rolls again this year but also added a new twist – her jalapeño popper dip & crostinis that we loved so much when Bryan & Angie were here last week. At noon we headed over for our traditional lunch at Mom & Sandy’s. Of course they went all-out again this year! We stuffed ourselves with turkey, ham, mashed potatoes, gravy, noodles, dressing, Mom’s mac & cheese, corn casserole, baked beans, sweet potatoes, cranberry salad, pumpkin roll, pumpkin pie, pecan pie, dirt pudding and I’m sure I’m leaving something out…man what a spread! The girls sat and talked awhile the boys watched the Lions win in the 1st football game of the day and later played football out in the street for about an hour. This year we had Mom & Sandy, the five of us, Dee, Jamie & Grace and “Grandpa” Joe – smaller crowd than normal – and later Noah came over as well. Gigi again held her annual BINGO game that was very popular. I won a pair of Hot Wheels and Abby won a pair of Minion glasses and a Chia Pet. We came home and watched Dallas get smashed in the 2nd game of the day. Romo and the offense did not look good at all and Tony ended up getting hurt and leaving game. He is done for the year with another broken collarbone. We sent the boys over to get goodies from Gma & Gigi’s house. They returned from raiding the fridge with a shopping bag full of food and we had leftovers for dinner (I, of course, enjoyed a cold turkey sandwich). Abby went Black Friday shopping with friends that night and ended up staying out all night. The Bears played in the 3rd / final game of the day and won at Lambo Field for the 1st time in 4 decades. It was cool to see Bret Favre get his number retired and even Bart Starr was there and I got to explain to Luke who both players were. Ann & Amy went out Black Friday shopping late that night and were also out all night. As has been their tradition for many years, they again went out with their latest incarnation of the “hideous headgear.”

It was a rainy Black Friday. Abby finally got in about 7 am and promptly went to bed. She got her ears pierced again. Ann didn’t get home till about 11 and she took her weary, ailing knees right to bed as well. However, she was so wired that she couldn’t fall asleep for another couple hours. Luke and I slept in a little and went shopping in Columbus. We found several little things for presents as a few Hot Wheels for ourselves before eating lunch at Arni’s and heading on home. We joined everyone else by grabbing a nap and later we had leftovers for dinner while watching Elf. I fell asleep early and missed a late night ice cream run and viewing of The Grinch.
It rained all day and night again on Saturday. I enjoyed an early, quiet morning before Luke got up and went to basketball practice at the Fieldhouse. Luke helped me get the Christmas decorations out of the garage so we could put up the Christmas tree. We were all starting to get a little grumpy and ended up ordering Pizza Hut for lunch. That got us over the hump and the tree turned out great. Abby got to hang the first bulb – the coveted “ugly orange bulb!” Matt & I watched IU beat Purdue for the 3rd straight year in the Old Oaken Bucket game. I went over and fixed Mom & Gigi’s other computer for a couple hours while Mom O played on her sewing machine later that afternoon. Abby had a date with Noah that night to see one of her favorite franchises – the new (and final?) Hunger Games movie. Meanwhile Ann made the boys and I popcorn and we watched Die Hard on the big screen.

We slept in on Sunday morning before getting to our weekly household chores. I lost the belt off the van when I hit a big puddle on Friday night. Luke & I went and bought a special tool to help us get it back on but we couldn’t figure it out, so Abby got Noah to come over and help us. Unfortunately we still couldn’t get it on correctly and will have to take it in to Acra’s this week and drive the truck until we get it fixed. Meanwhile the girls cooked Chex mix, went shopping and later made chicken fettuccini alfredo for dinner. The boys and I watched the Colts win again with Hasselbeck. After dinner, Matt went back to school and Noah came over to watch the Seahawks game with Abby. The kids put up threes in their rooms and we relaxed and reflected on our long weekend, dreading the long week ahead of us…
Next up is our Waybac section which continues to feature our first few photo albums of Matthew’s life. We lead off this week in May of ’96 at Mom & Dad B’s dream house in Rossville for Matt’s baby shower with Vicky Albrights, Aunt Norma, Bethany and Ann & I; then on to Matt’s first Christmas in Columbus with a picture of Mom with an afro (!); next we go to July of 1997 to see our happy Matt at our fist home in G’burg and then on to Memaw & Gigi’s house for Sandy’s 40th birthday; and next we head to the big annual Scheu family Christmas party in Lafayette – this is at Uncle John & Aunt June’s Lingle Ave home, across from the Diocese house in December ’97; then on to June 1998 for a family day at my work and then Matt on his new potty. You’re welcome, buddy! :0)
