Sometimes you Lose Sometimes you Win

We enjoyed another busy week here at the Scheu abode. Matt continued to gear up for finals, Abby danced everyday I think and Luke had a basketball in his hand everyday…sometimes with Ann yelling at him to take it outside! Ann continued to rehab her knee as she prepared to have her other knee repaired next week. And I got in a few days of exercise but still managed to see no weight loss. Wow – what a difference a year makes – this time last year we were freezing cold. This week however, we have seen it all – fog, rain, sun, and believe it or not we even had the windows open and the heat off at the end of the week! Hello again and welcome back to the Scheu Family Blog.
We started off the week on a cooler note and there was a bunch of fog that made driving kind of cool. Abby had Pirateers after a full day of school. She had been up most of the night studying for tests. Ann had physical therapy on her repaired knee. Luke did not have basketball that night so I got on the treadmill. Abby had jazz class that night at Dixon. Luke & I watched Purdue move to 9-0 with a win over IUPUI. The Cowboys beat those evil Redskins on MNF. It was the first game they had won in quite some time w/o Romo. Congrats to Rob for passing his big test to officially become a licensed real estate agent and continuing to open doors for himself. And more congrats goes out to Noah as well, who came home with some hardware from the football banquet, being named the most valuable DB for 2015.
Tuesday morning was super foggy. It was actually a little scary driving in that morning because of how dense it was on the ride in. Abby was in early to school for Pirateers practice as well as Student Council. It was a long day at work for us and was a brisk walk to Ann’s office that afternoon. Britney came home with Abby to Gma’s then stayed for Soup Night. In fact, the girls helped Ann make a big batch of potato soup. Noah and Cody joined the girls for Homework Club. We have several new social media pictures to share this week: Rob & Sharon in Nassau; Barney’s family at the Lafayette Christmas parade; rockin’ Homer; Noah’s awards; Tammie & fam; the big Cowboys victory last weekend; a cool car we saw at the grocery store; some of my favorite cousins; John & June at Disney; Nate & Steph’s girls; Bu w/ big bag of M&Ms for studying this week; and with her new car, she finally gets the online driver’s ed portion done…now she has a few driving lessons to go and she can get her license!; Kimmy & Chuck’s boys; this year’s Pirateers lineup; Gigi and the WTRE gals; Phyllis & Dick have their 50 year old Santa sign up and working again this year; dinner at BWR; Luke got to do a little driving this weekend when I took him out to North Decatur high school; a couple Calvin & Hobbes panels; Rick & Lynn in Jamaica; Luke & Drew at BWR; Bu and friend; and Cathy & Tom in Mexico.

I walked to Ann’s office after work again on Wednesday evening. It was a lovely afternoon – perfect for a long walk. Ann had PT on her knee earlier in the day so she was pretty sore that night. Abby had Pirateers practice after school before heading over to work at Dixon. She and Ann went out for ice cream afterwards and a long talk about all the recent drama in her life.
Luke had basketball practice after school on Thursday. It rained on and off but was noticeably warmer…unseasonably warmer. Crazy – it was in the 50’s. We picked up Luke at the junior high and then went out to the varsity girls’ basketball game to see Abby and the Pirateers perform. It was a great performance but the game ran late and we were not able to get Bu out to tap class in time. So we went home instead and called it a night.
Friday went by quickly for everyone. It was another warm day but I don’t think the sun ever peeked out. We were back out at the high school again that night as the boys’ home opener was that evening and Abby & the Pirateers were back in action. This was a big night for the girls. They premiered their new pre-game dance. It was really cool and high-energy. The girls got changed and came and sat with us during the 2nd quarter before heading back out for more dancing. This time they had two routines, which was very entertaining. The 2nd one was Abby & Mary’s dance again. You may remember that the last time they tried to perform this routine, the music CDs that I made would not play. This time, they double-checked both CDs on the stereo and they figured out how to play them this time. Just in case, I created an iPod with only this one song and brought two different types of patch cords. One way or the other, they would not be embarrassed for a second time. We all held our breaths as they paused to insert the CD and there was a moment of silence that started to worry me but then the music kicked in and the girls came to life. The routine was really good and well worth the wait. I think it was the best one of the year so far (though I may be biased). It was very intricate with lots of movement and up-tempo music, which kept the crowed in it. The girls pulled it off and looked great. Bu stayed at the game with her friends to root on the Pirates to victory. Meanwhile, Ann, Luke & I took Mom & Sandy out for dinner at Wings & Rings. Drew came home with Luke that night and he went to the ball game, came out to eat with us and then stayed the night as well.

We were up early on a very warm Saturday morning. Luke had basketball practice at the Fieldhouse and we took Drew home. While he was at practice, I serviced the vehicles. Abby’s Pirateers performance at the girls’ basketball game that afternoon was cancelled so she joined Ann to finish up Christmas shopping until late afternoon. Luke & I did our weekly household chores and as a reward, I took him out to teach him how to drive at the high school. However there were too many cars in the lot so we went out to North Decatur and practiced for about 10 minutes. We made a run for the border and then watched the Boilers extend their record to 11-0 for only the second time in school history! By the time Ann got home, her knees were screaming. It was too much for her and we decided not to attend a Christmas party that night. Instead, she iced her knees, wrapped presents and later we got caught up on our DVR’ed shows. Later I watched UFC 194 fights and was shocked to see McGregor knock out Aldo in13 seconds!
We finally got a chance to sleep in on Sunday morning. I’m not sure Abby was out of bed much at all today, finally getting caught up on her sleep. Ann & I took Luke to Milan for his basketball games. Our best player broke his finger and was not available today. We’re not sure when he’ll be back, so that will make things interesting for the rest our season. We came in undefeated, but we would not leave Milan with that perfect streak intact. We got there on time but Milan was running a half hour behind and we ended up coming out flat. We played North Decatur in the opener. It was an uneven matchup and we quickly jumped out to a 20 point lead. They only scored 4 points in the first half. That allowed a ton of playing time for our second stringers. You could really tell that we were missing our main guy and it didn’t help that we were rusty from not playing in three weeks. Luke may have taken a shot or two but he did not score. He had a few rebounds and a couple forced turnovers. He came out flat, complaining of a headache and played like he was tired in the first half. He was more energetic in the second half and began setting some nice picks. Luke & the 6th grade Pirates went on to win, 38-15. After a brief break we right back at it. This time, we faced off against a very good Connersville team. We have had some great battles with this team through the years. This one was no different. It went back and forth until the second half when we lost another starter who began vomiting. That did give Luke more playing time, but it took a toll on our team. He played more today than he has all year but with both starters out, we made too many mistakes on offense. We had a couple dozen turnovers and you can’t win if you beat yourself – especially against a team of this caliber. They hit their free throws down the stretch and we ended up losing our first game of the year, 38-43. Luke again may have taken one shot this game but did not have any points. He again had a few rebounds and a couple of assists but it was his screens on offense that made the biggest impact. He was a machine but did have a nasty hip check that sent a boy sprawling across the floor and brought out a collective “oooh!” from the crowd. Hopefully we can get the offense figured out this week in practice or get our starters healthy before next weekend. We came home and Ann made us one of our favorites (and comfort food for Luke, I think after his first loss) – sloppy joes, mac & cheese and corn. It doesn’t get much better than that, man! The Colts & Cowboys got destroyed today and we talked to Dad & Barb as we made plans for next weekend. Unfortunately, we won’t be able to make the big Scheu family party this year but will at least the kids will be able to spend time with Grandma & Grandpa Scheu.

Next up is our Waybac segment, which features a few new pictures of Mom from the late nineties. We lead off with Mom & Matt in May, 1996 up at the Dream Home in Rossville; then Matt’s Christmas at Memaw & Gigi’s house in Ryle in ’96; more Gma & Gigi time for Matt – this time at the 4th of July parade, downtown G’burg in ’97; then back to Mom & Sandy’s house for Christmas in ’97; then up to Pine Lake in LP to ride on Aquaholic with Mom & Dad Bryan in May ’98; and finally up on the square to meet Santa in ’98. I think there may be a picture or two somewhere of when I helped fill in for Santa later that year when he couldn’t make it one night…

At the boys’ basketball game on Friday night, Luke & Drew spotted their 5th grade teacher, Mrs. Foster, in the stands down in front of us. They went over and talked to her for the better part of an hour. That night I got on the boys about bothering her and not leaving her alone. Luke looks at me and squarely says, “No man; she totally enjoyed it.”

And finally we have our video section. This week, we have five new family movies to share as well as a few from around the internet this week.

And that does it for this week’s Scheu Family Blog entry. As always; thanks for keeping up with us this time out and we’ll catch up with you again next time. Until then, have a good one. We miss ya, Mom.
Later, Scheu
