Nothing Changes on New Year’s Day

Aaahhh….what a nice, relaxing week this has been… We enjoyed our second week off from work & school and ushered in another new year. It’s weird to use 2016 when dating things. It seems like a date I read about in sci-fi novels as a child. Matt did work a couple days, Ann went in to work one day and I worked from home a few days, but overall it was still very relaxing. Abby had no performances but Luke got back to playing ball. This will be the home stretch of their season. Abby did start volleyball this week, which meant Ann & I had to split up again. Thankfully this should be the last year for that to occur. It was a cold week that kept us inside mostly. Ann continued to hobble around the house, we saw some family we hadn’t seen in a while and Maryann had a health scare. Hello again and welcome back to the Scheu Family Blog.
It definitely felt more like winter on Monday morning with temps in the 30s but the high winds plus the cold, stinging rain made it feel like it was in the low teens. Brrr. Matt returned to work that morning. Abby had Pirateers practice then afterwards she and Kama drove Ann to Columbus for her PT appointment. Luke had basketball practice at the junior high school but the weather outside kept me from walking. The greatest Harlem Globetrotter passed away that day – Meadowlark Lemon. We worked on the Pacifica by charging the battery at home and having Acra’s remove a nail and patch the tire. Noah and Cody came to the house to visit Abby that night and Ann made spaghetti for dinner for all the kids. Later that night, we heard the news that the god father of heavy rock music had also passed away – bassist Lemmy Kilmeister of Motörhead.
Tuesday was a day to sleep in on another cold morning. Only Matt worked that day. Ann had a follow-up doctor appointment. Luke played outside all day with his neighborhood friends. I cleaned up the house a little and worked on my Hot Wheels collection database. Abby had Pirateers practice that evening and I stayed over there with her for a while and walked on the walking track. It was cold but not as cold as it was during that last 5K – which was the last time I was on that track. We have a ton of new social media and other miscellaneous pictures to share this week: the kids I reading The Night Before Christmas; Lola snuggling up with Ann; a nice note from a local photographer; John & June took the kids on a Disney Christmas Cruise this year; Missy & Mindy; Aunt Sharon (Bryan) with Nate & Katie and kids; the beard came off but Ann still wasn’t happy with me; we had extensive flooding this week; Meadowlark Lemon; Abby & friends; the boys and I were in the newspaper recently, working at the K of C’s on Christmas Eve; with all our treats came a ton of dishes…and man have we done a lot of dishes on vacation(!); Lemmy will be missed; Kimmy & Chuck; Barney; Aunt Sharon (Morgan) w/ Angie; Tammie; Cathy & Tom; Nate & Steph; and Natalie Cole.

Ann went back to work on Wednesday morning. She also had to return her cryo-wrap sadly. That has been her best friend the past couple weeks. Now she’ll have to ice her knee the old fashioned way. Matt also had to work that day. Thankfully he worked indoors because it was a very cold day. Abby had a dentist appointment that afternoon. Luke went with Matt to Columbus for haircuts (finally!). Keith, Rosie & Megan got in to town that afternoon. Gracie was also in town that day so we had a big get-together and exchanged Christmas presents. I met everyone over there by walking to Mom & Gigi’s house. It was again pretty chilly. It might be getting close to making move indoors for the winter. We’ll see… We had some great pizza from Mancino’s and had fun hanging out with the Owens family for the evening. Even Noah came over with Bu. With the whole family together and all the dogs, it was a full house!
Thursday was New Year’s Eve. Ann worked from home as her knee was screaming that morning. It snowed a little and continued to drop in temperature (it was below freezing all day). Matt worked then went out to his buddy’s house for the night and came back early on New Years morning and went back to bed. Luke ran errands with me for a few hours. Ann went to Mom’s house to spend time with Keith before he left. Later, Luke & Bu went with us to the Messers for their annual New Years Eve party. It was a smaller one that last year and really laid back. The band played for several hours and didn’t quit until about 5 am! We left before that but had a great time. Abby left with her friend Shelby and stayed the night with her.
We enjoyed sleeping in on New Years Day. We slowly got up and watched the Rose Bowl parade and then spent the day watching bowl games…most of which were blowouts, unfortunately. Ann went scrapbooking with Shawna and the kids & I got Pizza Hut delivered for lunch. Later, Ann made our traditional, Bryan-Family-Recipe Rebel Dogs for dinner! She also made the Chick-Filet coleslaw for some much-needed good luck in 2016. Maryann was admitted to the hospital due to a stomach ailment. We send lots of love her way and wish her a speedy recovery. We joked that she will get some rest at least! Keith & Rosie came back in to town to see her and Ann & Matt met up with them at DCMH. Award-winning vocalist Natalie Cole passed away earlier in the day. Ann & I watched several movies with the kids that afternoon and all evening. Noah joined us and then Britney and then Megan. The girls ended up staying the night, sleeping out in the family room. At some time in the middle of the night, Matt ran the girls out to get drive-through (which got me off the hook – thanks buddy!).

We enjoyed sleeping in again on Saturday morning. In fact, we slept so well that we almost forgot about Luke’s basketball practice. We got such a late start that by the time we remembered Luke’s activity, we were already late. To make matters worse, Ann’s car wouldn’t start. We quickly got it jumped and then realized we had to scrape the windows. To add injury to insult, while I was scraping the windows, I noticed that Pacifica’s repaired tire had gone flat – completely flat this time. So we jumped in to the van and finally got on our way, but what a way to start the day! We apologized to Trevor for being late and Luke helped me to get the tire off, get it aired up at the gas station. We came home and hooked the battery up to the charger for the day and made an appointment at Acra’s on Monday to fix that tire again. It may be time to give up the goat and just put a new set of tires on that car, but I’m trying to get every mile out of them that we can. Ann & Matt visited Mom O again. Luke & I did our weekly household chores that afternoon. Abby and the Pirateers’ scheduled dance performance was cancelled so she ended up going shopping with Kama all afternoon and then they went to the boys’ basketball game. The boys joined Ann & I with another visit to go see Memaw, who was in great spirits and looked very relaxed. We went out for dinner afterwards to Chili’s. We hadn’t been there in a few years and we had a very nice meal. I picked up Abby from the basketball game and she brought Britney & Megan with her. We ran through drive-through on our way home. Britney ended up leaving but Megan spent the night again. We came home and watched the Purdue game against a very good Iowa team.
We slept in one more time, enjoying our last day of vacation. Man, that’s a sad thought. This has been such a nice break for us and we love spending time with the kids like this at the end of the year. I am not looking forward to all the paperwork I’ll have on Monday after being away for two weeks. We had to divide and conquer that afternoon as Ann went with Abby to volleyball and I went with Luke to basketball. Luke & I travelled to Milan as the 6th grade Pirates got back in to action. We were supposed to face Jac-Cen-Del and North Decatur. However, we instead played Rushville in the 1st game and Waldron in the 2nd game. The boys jumped out to an early lead against Rushville and never looked back, easily winning 43-24. We thought we would see more of the same in the 2nd game. Waldron didn’t look particularly good in warm-ups, they only had 6 guys and we beat them by 30 a few months ago. However, they came to win and hustled for all the loose balls, got a few shots to fall and after the Pirates started off hot and were up 9, they found themselves down two at the half. It was nip and tuck in the second half. Greensburg was down by six at one point and came back to win 42-34. This was a good gut check for them and the boys responded well. Overall, Luke was 1 for 1 from the floor for two points. He also had an assist, a turnover, a steal, a forced turnover and 12 rebounds. He also had 3 fouls and did a great job with setting picks to get his teammates open. We stopped by Steak & Shake in Batesville on the way home for a late lunch. Meanwhile the girls were in Milhousen to play the host team. The girls started off rough but were able to come back and win in three straight sets, 21-20, 20-17 and 21-8 to win their first meet of the year. They didn’t even practice! Later, Abby went out on a dinner date with Noah while the rest of us watched NFL games. The Colts won but did not make the playoffs. It is rumored that Coach Pagano will not return next year. The Cowboys were blown out by the Redskins to mercifully end Dallas’ season. Peyton’s Ponies made a return and clinched the #1 seed in the AFC with an exciting come-from-behind victory. Peyton didn’t play until midway through the 3rd quarter but gave the team such a lift that you could see the momentum change as he ran on the field to a standing ovation. Matt & I ran the Pacifica in to Acra’s and later we saw an ambulance & fire truck at the Dodd’s house. So just as we had gotten Maryann out of the hospital earlier this evening, poor Ed was being taken in after hitting his head on yet another fall. Ann went over to see how we could help, but Jenny felt she had everything taken care of so we finished out our vacation flopped on the couches one last night before we have to grudgingly get back to reality tomorrow morning…
