Teach…your Children Well…

What a long week. Ann & I had a tough week of parenting. I thought it would get easier but Mom tried to warn me that it only gets harder before it gets any easier. Matt went back to school, so the house felt a little emptier this week, though we did talk to him a few times for various reasons. Luke obviously missed Matt as he slept in his bed all week. Abby mixed a lot of dance and a little drama this week. Luke had a big week of basketball. And Snowmageddon just barely missed us. Hello again and welcome back to the Scheu Family Blog.
It was back to work for Ann & I on Monday morning. Ann had her last round of physical therapy but her knees have just killed her all week still. The kids were off school for MLK Day. They worked hard to clean up the house. Megan & Britney went home that morning. We had a wind chill advisory, starting off the day at a single degree and never got out of the teens. Abby had Pirateers then went on to jazz class at Dixon. I watched the Purdue basketball game solo since my Boiler buddy was up at U Indy. And sadly, we heard the news that Eagles founder Glenn Frey passed away at 67.
It was cold again on Tuesday morning, starting in the single digits – burr. Luke had basketball practice at the junior high. I talked to Dad B that night who is excited to see New Orleans for the first time very soon. We were sad to hear that Lynn’s daughter is sick again and we all wish her well. Abby had the Homework Club over for cheeseburgers. Britney & Cody joined us while I hopped on the treadmill.
It snowed overnight and continued to snow until about mid-morning on Wednesday. We got about 3??? of snow all-told, delaying school by two hours and slowing our ride to work. Abby had soccer practice…yes, soccer practice! She is going to give it a go after taking five years off from her second-favorite sport. Ann made cheesy popcorn in honor of national popcorn day and American Idol night while I got back on the treadmill again.
Abby had a very busy Thursday. She had Pirateers practice before school, took a Driver’s Ed class after school (though we’re not sure when she will get her license at this point) and then had tap class at DDS later that evening. Luke had basketball practice. Ann made tacos while I hopped back on the treadmill again. While walking, I watched The Interview – a surprisingly funny movie that received mixed reviews. And it was a sad day as we watched the final auditions show on AI. I still can’t believe they are cancelling the show after this season. Abby had Britney over – and with her came four of their boy friends that hung out with Ann and her for a few hours. We have lots of new social media pictures to share this week: out lovely Bu with and w/o friends (and that damn Pharell hat!); Rosie & Megan; Katie & kids; Aunt Sharon (Morgan); Rick & Lynn; Molly; Boilers are ranked #22 now and I love my new 3-Pete shirt that arrived this week!; an oldie of the tree tower; I spent most of the first half of the week working on a special project at work- creating a video to submit to our corporate office. I didn’t have as much time as I would’ve liked so we submitted what we could- warts and all… next Pete was elected in to the Red’s Hall of Fame finally…now if we can just get him in to the big Hall before he passes; a couple Calvin & Hobbes Sunday panels; Arni’s Loading Dock; and a shirt I’m working on for Bryan.

Abby was ill on Friday morning. She stayed in bed until mid-morning and went in just after lunch. There was a huge snowstorm that blew through the nation and just barely missed us. Ann was sad that she missed Snowmageddon. It dumped a couple feet of snow on the east coast. The weather cancelled that night’s high school basketball game so we didn’t get to see Abby & the Pirateers at halftime…even though we got no snow at all. Bu went out with Brit on a double date to ElRep. I worked late to finish up my annual report, which is the final piece of my 2015 tasks at work. Now I can officially move on to first of my 2016 projects. It was a very windy ride home and parts of the back roads began to drift shut. Ann had a follow up with her knee surgeon to discuss her challenges. She got a shot or two and a new brace to try and alleviate some of her constant pain. We REALLY hope it helps her get some relief. We took Luke out to eat at Chili’s to celebrate us making it through the week. Abby and Britney had their male friends over to the house again to hang out for the evening. They stayed out in the family room and laughed a lot that night and Britney spent the night, officially becoming an honorary Scheu child.
Luke wanted another Daddy’s Drivers Ed class on Saturday morning – like he enjoyed last weekend when we went out to North Decatur high school to practice driving the van. It was his second time driving and he is pretty good. We were also hoping to go sledding – but unfortunately neither of those fun things happened this weekend. Luke had basketball practice. Ann went scrapbooking in OH with Angie. Luke & I went Hot Wheel hunting for a couple hours but didn’t have much luck. We did our weekly household chores and ran errands. We ended up at the high school twice that day. In the afternoon we went to the girls’ game to watch Abby and the Pirateers perform at halftime. Ann didn’t make it so Luke snapped off a couple pictures. The girls beat the Batesville team that had got them earlier in the year. Later that night, Ann joined us as we went to the boys’ game where Bu & the Pirateers performed three times! The boys beat South Decatur but we left early and Bu stayed to hang out with her friends for a little while. Abby had Britney over again and she ended up spending the night.

Sunday was another busy day. We did get to finally sleep in and Ann made muffins for the kids before Britney left. The girls went to volleyball at Milhousen to face St. Pete’s. They won two of three sets to remain undefeated this year! Meanwhile Luke & I headed to Connersville where the #1-seeded 6th grade Pirates would play for the league championship at Connersville in the big Spartan Bowl. First up was the Batesville 1 team. Luke saw limited playing time in this very close game. In fact, the type of offense we ran had both our centers on the sidelines most of the today. This was the semi-final game of the north bracket. The Pirates pulled away in the last 5 minutes and won 46-38 to move to the championship game vs. south bracket champs, #2-ranked East Central. The final game was close at the half but our boys came out strong after the break and won going away, 52-39 to win the championship! Luke made the most of his time on the floor defensively as he accumulated 3 rebounds, a blocked shot and forced 5 turnovers. That makes it a clean sweep for Greensburg in the Dirt Road league this year by being the league champs and now the tourney champs. They will play in a few more various tourneys over the next month. In other sports, we kept up on the AFC championship game throughout the afternoon and loved seeing the Broncos beat the Patriots in what became a very exciting game in the final two minutes. We watched the last part of the game during Luke’s celebration dinner at Caballo Blanco. We watched the NFC championship game at home and was far less exciting as the Panthers blew out the Cardinals to set the match-up for Super Bowl 50 in a couple weeks and perhaps Peyton can ride off into the sunset on top… Later I watched the Purdue game from earlier today as I wrote out this entry…what an exciting team we have this year but they have got to improve on the turnovers and their free throw shooting if they want to make any noise in the tourney.
