Everything’s Coming our Way

Man, it was a fast Super Bowl week. The weather was all over the place. Ann’s knees were finally feeling better. I found a way to walk each day. Matt rested his body and studied hard. Abby was constantly on the go. Luke started to cross-fade his sport seasons. And the Sheriff played in possibly his final game of his illustrious career. Overall, it was a great week! Hello again and welcome back to the Scheu Family Blog.
We enjoyed a warm start to the week on Monday morning. It warmed up to the 50s and allowed me to get back on the People Trail after work. Ann said her knees felt a ton better, which is some promising news for once. Abby had Pirateers practice and then went on to jazz class that night at Dixon.
Tuesday was crazy warm as temps soared in to the 60s. It was Groundhog’s Day and Phil didn’t disappoint as he predicted that we would have an early spring this year. Judging by the recent weather, I’d have to agree with him. In between the rain during the early afternoon and the severe storms in the late evening and overnight hours, I was able to hit the People Trail again and discovered some new parts of it. Abby & Britney attended Math Club after school and won the days’ competition. We teased Abby that it was because she distracted the boys with her pretty outfit she wore to school that day. Afterwards the girls had Homework Club at the house on Soup Night. But when Ann ditched us for an After-Prom meeting with Shawna, the kids & I grabbed carryout from Koch’s.
We saw some low-level flooding on the way to work on Wednesday and there were big batches of debris along the road where it had obviously been covered overnight. Ann had a doctor appointment and Abby worked at Dixon Dance Studio. Later, Ann had an official After-Prom meeting at the school and Luke & I went to the YMCA to work out. We had lots of new social media pictures to share this week: lots of Bu & her friends; Luke & his teammates; more Bu and buddies; Aunt Sharon; the Guard kiddos; the Hellmichs on Senior Night; Lola; Glenn Frey tribute; old toys from my childhood; some Zeppelin memes; an LP alum will be attending U-Indy to play football; the Boilers made it up to #18 this week; and old G’burg ad; my current Cowboys favorite player made a big interception in the Pro Bowl; the big Met show; the R&R HOF is coming up soon (I looked in to tickets but they’re outrageously expensive); Calvin & Hobbes panels; Nick & GF; Jake & Reese; and more of our lovely little Bu.

Luke had baseball practice after work on Thursday night. It was the first workout for the tow ace pitchers of our team this year. Bryan & I have decided not to do travel ball this year due to the time constraints it puts on our families. Instead, we will move back to the league and hopefully we can get some private workouts with a baseball trainer as well. We were early for practice and when Bryan said he was running late, Luke & I went out back and Luke enjoyed some Daddy Driver’s Ed on the New Mesco lot. Abby had tap at Dixon Dance and Ann made some amazing pasta that we munched on through the weekend. Later, Ann & I watched American Idol choose the Top 24. Ann was happy her gal made but I was disappointed that my guy (Zach Person) was somehow left out. I’m not sure what the heck happened. You can see him in action in our video segment below. Here are some miscellaneous pix from this year – Luke driving the van, a couple pix from the Y walking trail, Abby & the honorary Scheu gals, Abby at her first car wash for Tonya, Luke’s latest artwork and Abby playing volleyball last weekend.

Luke had Drew over to spend the night on Friday. The boys & I went to the Y to exercise and then grabbed Koch’s again for dinner. Abby had Pirateers practice then went out with her gal pals to ElRep for dinner. Afterwards all her BFFs came over to stay up late and spend the night. Those girls laugh more than any other group of people I know! Megan, Britney & Kenzie kept Ann up late, carrying on and it was cool to have all the “honorary” Scheu daughters in the house again.
The kids were up early and on their way on Saturday morning. We started in on our weekly household chores that continued on and off throughout the rest of the day. In between we had our normally busy weekend. Luke & the 6th grader Pirates had basketball practice at the junior high. Abby & the Pirateers held their annual dance clinic. It was a smashing success this year with 150 little girls in attendance. Later that afternoon, all those girls filled the floor during halftime of the boys’ game vs. Jac-Cen-Del. Afterwards we went out for a late lunch to BWR. We brought Mom & Sandy along as well and had fun catching up with them. Abby took her car – Tonya the Taurus – thru the car wash for the first time. Later Bu had her buddy Reagan over to bake cookies and watch the Goosebumps movie on the big screen. Megan & Brit came over later to visit Abby and ended up staying the night again. I stayed up late with them this time but they left me once I turned on the big pre-Super Bowl concert. Metallica played at AT&T Park, just down the road from the site of the Super Bowl. “The Night Before,” as the show was dubbed, was sold-out to a massive crowd and was broadcast over the internet via a live simulcast on YouTube. I was able to bring it up on the big screen and it was really cool. It’s been far too long since I’ve seen them live. James dubbed the show, “Too Heavy for Halftime” and the boys played 18 songs and went till 2 am!

Super Bowl Sunday was our only sleep-in day. We took our time rolling out of bed before eventually heading over to St. Leon for a pair of volleyball games with Abby & the CYO Turtles. First up, the girls swept the host All-Saints team. Next, they matched up with a very serious St. Anthony’s team. Between their coach, a few of the players and their fans, I’m not sure who was more…shall we say over-enthusiastic. They do realize this is a church-league level competition, right? Anyhow, the girls had three hotly-contested sets with them, winning only one of them. The girls looked really good and it’s hard to believe that they have never practiced…ever. They all played very well together and had a lot of fun…which is what this league is supposed to be about. I took some pictures to share on Facebook tomorrow. Not sure how well they came out, but maybe they’ll be good enough to enjoy. Afterwards, we came home to get ready for the big game. Ann made two awesome dishes. Bryan requested her jalapeno dip and then she found a cool recipe for Italian deli crazy bread which is a baked Italian loaf, sliced and filled with meat and cheese and was simply amazing. We’ll definitely ask her to make that again. We headed over to Bryan & Angie’s house for the big game as Peyton’s Ponies faced a daunting foe: a Carolina team that only lost one game all year. It was a great defensive battle and we had an awesome time with the Messers as the Broncos scored first and never relinquished the lead and Peyton won his 2nd Super Bowl. We were all thrilled to see Von Miller (we voted online 10 times for him!) win the MVP as the defense was the difference in this game! It was Peyton’s 200th win in the NFL – the most by anyone, all-time. I feel like we’ve seen Peyton’s last game…so happy for him. What a class act…
Next up is our Waybac section which continues to feature our young family in our first few photo albums. We lead off this week in May of ’96 with Matt lounging in my favorite recliner from Grandpaw Brown as well as playing with Ann in our living room in Columbus; then Matt with Gma O, eating and napping with his mommy as well as Jenny after giving birth to Brooke, all in November 1996; then the 4th of July parade in Greensburg with Memaw and Matt with his Lego blocks in July 1997; next we move to the Scheu family Christmas in December ’97; then on to Rossville for a visit to Grandma & Grandpa Bryan’s house and then on to Aunt Marilou & Uncle Kenny’s house for a family reunion and fish fry in May 1998; and finally Brayton sleeping over with Matt in the race car bed, Ann & Matt going for carriage ride uptown with Grinch, Cat in the Hat & Frosty (Dee & Chad & Gigi, I think?) and Matt & Leila at the Brown family Christmas in Rossville…all in December 1998.

And that does it for this week’s installment of the Scheu Family Blog. Thanks for keeping up with us this time out and we’ll catch up with you again next time. Until then, have a good one. We miss ya Mom.
