And You should’ve Seen her Dance

We had lots of stuff going on this week. Luke was again a two-sport athlete; Abby was up to her neck in dance; Matt declared a major; Ann had more doctor stuff and my body finally started to mend and I finally got back out to exercise a little. The weather took a nosedive on us. After enjoying some warmer days, we were reminded that we indeed live in the Midwest as we had rain, storms, sleet, snow and high-winds – all of the things that say spring – NOT! And there were lots of other things going on that made it quite an interesting week around here. Hello again; and welcome back to the Scheu Family Blog.
It’s still weird to watch Luke leave with Abby for school, as they did again on Monday morning. We know this will only last a couple years, so we cherish our time. I had a doctor appointment for my back and the doc said I was fine. He gave me some pills and stretches and sent me on my way. Ann had an MRI on her knee; she has a torn meniscus and damage to the MCL with arthritis and like six other issues. Abby had Pirateers tryouts (her friend Emma is also trying out this year!) and then helped at the senior awards banquet as part of Student Council. Luke had track practice after school. Ann & Luke made Cajun chicken pasta for dinner. Abby had Alex over and March Madness concluded with an outstanding game that saw UNC hit a 3-pointer to tie the game with just a few ticks left…only to have ‘Nova come right back down and nail a long 3-pointer at the buzzer to end the game. Wow!
Ann & I finally got to share a ride for the first time in a couple weeks as I made it through an entire day on Tuesday. Abby was ill that day but eventually made it in to school about mid-morning. She later attended the high school baseball’s opening day game to support Alex and then went on to Dixon for competition prep. Luke had track practice then baseball practice with Drew. It should’ve been our first team practice but instead we still hadn’t even drafted our team yet and Bryan was out of town so it was just the boys and I out at the ball diamonds. We worked on throwing and fielding as well as did some pitching. That night, Luke worked on his art project until after bedtime. Those little pills the doctor gave me are a miracle – today was my first day to be pain-free!

It was overcast all day on Wednesday. Abby and Emma had Pirateers tryouts again. Luke had track practice after school. Ann had an After-Prom meeting with Shawna. Luke & I caught up with Bryan & Drew at the Armory for the GYBL draft. We feel like we have a decent team, but we have a lot of work to do. It rained cats & dogs that day and through the night, causing some low-level flooding. And country & western legend Merle Haggard passed away on his 79th birthday.
Thursday was a colder, wetter day. Abby had Pirateers tryouts again and Luke had track. I finally got back out and exercised after work – but man… what bad timing it was because it started to snow while I was walking – brrr! Ann cooked steaks and veggies on the grill. Later, the girls were back at DDS for her final tap class before their first competition. And that night, Ann & I watched the American Idol finale, just like we’ve watched nearly every other episode for the past fifteen years – doesn’t seem that long ago…and Harmon Trent won the final season. It was a really cool show actually as they brought back all the former contestants. We have lots of new social media pictures to share this week: the Reds started off hot, going 3-0 to start the season; then lots of Abby and her friends; Cathy on the beach; Jason & Erica’s oldest; the Guards; Nat’s middle child; the Phi Delt house at FC again had their charter pulled due to an incident on campus (very sad news); the newest Star Wars movie made its way to home video this week; Angie and daughter; Nathan & Uncle Dan oldie; the Hot Wheels National Convention was held in Indy this week – damn, Luke & I really wanted to go, too! One day I hope to make it – HW designer Larry Wood was there, signing autographs; AI crowned a new (and final?) champ this week; and the 2016 – 2017 Pirateers squad was announced this week…so proud of our little Bu…

Friday was cold & windy with snow & sleet. Abby had her final Pirateers tryout and she not only made it but also had the top score and made Captain!! Way to go, Bu!!! She celebrated by going out with a few of her Pirateers friends as well as her SD buddies to the bowling alley and then they all came back here to hang out in the family room for a while. Luke had his final track practice before his first meet then he & I grabbed drive through and watched movies all night. Meanwhile, Ann had lunch with Matt then went out with Shawna to late night scrapping at Mrs. B’s. And Matt has chosen to declare his major as elementary education. He has always worked well with kids. Many times he helped me coach Abby & Luke’s teams when they were little. He would make a great teacher…too bad there isn’t more money in it but we’ve always taught him that there’s much more to life than just money…
Luke & I up early for baseball practice on Saturday morning. Bryan & Drew joined us in the cold. It had snowed with a hard freeze overnight so it was a bone-chilling practice. It continued to snow through practice. The grass was a bit slippery and the water puddles were frozen. Only about half the team bothered to show up, which was a little disappointing. Afterwards we had lunch with the Messer boys at Jimmy John’s, where we held our first coaches meeting. We came back to do yard work but since it was still only in the 30s, we passed on it this week. We did our weekly household chores and the NASCAR race while the girls went out shopping. Later, Abby went out with her buddies again, Luke spent the night w/ Dee & Jamie and Ann & I had popcorn and got caught up on our DVR’ed shows.
It was a way-too-early morning when we got up and headed up to Indy on Sunday morning. It was Abby’s first dance competition of the year – and one of only two this year for her. We were at Pike High School for the Star Systems talent competition. Luke stayed with Dee & Jamie all day, which made it easier on all of us. Abby’s first dance was tap – a group of girls that have been together since they were little. They did not disappoint. Although far from perfect, they recovered nicely from some early mistakes and put together a solid performance. They scored an elite high gold, 1st place trophy in their category and overall 1st place in the Senior Shining Star category. We went out to eat breakfast afterwards at Le Peeps. Matt joined us in the afternoon session, where Abby danced with older girls in a jazz trio. They did really well – again, not flawless; but still damn good. They also scored an elite high gold, a 1st place trophy in their category and overall 2nd place in the Senior Shining Star category. Great job ladies!! Abby wanted Olive Garden for dinner after the competition and we were happy to oblige. Matt joined us for a nice dinner before heading off to go finish his psychology homework assignments. It rained very hard on the way home, which made things interesting but we made it safely. We picked up Luke, who came home to shower and promptly fell asleep. Thanks to Dee & Jamie for wearing him out for us! We got the big package of pictures / videos at the dance competition (which I know is hard to believe), but I had not idea they would have so many! We literally have hundreds of amazing pictures from today to sort through. I did not have nearly enough time when we got home to do anything but edit the video. So we have a great video below but only a few teaser pictures this week. We’ll have a ton more pictures in next week’s blog entry…so check back for those later. :0)
