I’m Coming on like a Hurricane

Even though the kids enjoyed their first week of Fall Break, all the talk was that of Hurricane Matthew, which threatened the eastern seaboard and our vacation. Between it and waiting for our impending tri-annual inspection at work, the family dealt with its share of anxiety. On a more positive note, Abby’s headache was much better this week. Luke had no sports this week, which meant he had no outlet for his abundant source of energy…meaning he drove us crazy! Matt knuckled down at school, Ann’s knees continued to ache and I got back on my diet and got out exercising each day. Hello again and welcome back to the Scheu Family Blog. But first – as promised, we have pictures from last weekend of Abby at Lucas Oil and at the softball tourney with Ms. Molly as well as Luke riding motorcycles up in Attica.

The kids were off on Monday to begin their two-week Fall Break. Unfortunately, Ann & I had to go back to work. It was a foggy ride in and became a cool and overcast day. I checked the Joint Commission website, which was clear so that was a big hurdle to overcome. Luke was all over it, hitting me up on a text each hour. It was a fast day. I walked 3 miles after work. That night, Ann made great pasta dinner that she found on Pinterest. Luke & I hooked up our new Chromecast device. It wasn’t exactly what I expected. I thought it would be more a more stand-alone device like our WD Live box. Still, it is pretty cool and I look forward to discovering what all it can do. Abby & I finally watched the Simpsons two new episodes from this year and afterward we watched the season 2 finale of FTWD. Later, Luke and I watched MNF as Ann turned in early. Abby ended up going out late with friends, supposedly clown-hunting.
Tuesday was a gorgeous day in the upper 70s. TJC website was still clear which kept Luke from bugging me. We just had one more day, as they give us a week’s notification. I walked 3 miles after work. Abby was feeling better after getting lots of rest yesterday, going out with her buddy Kama. Luke chilled all day again. Ann went to scrapbook store for clearance sales that night. Sadly, Mrs. B’s store will soon close. We watched the VP debate on TV. I thought Pence did great. Here are various pictures from this week: my daily walk tats, sites from my walks, and miscellaneous pix.

Abby was up early for Pirateers practice on Wednesday. TJC website was again clear, so we were thrilled to know that we were clear to go next week…only to find out that the region we are looking to vacation in is being evacuated. We put Luke in charge of tracking Hurricane Matthew, which at this point could either dissipate and go out to sea and die or make landfall and devastate the coast. Abby continued to feel much better and went to Dixon for a while to catch up on her dance classes she’s been missing. Later Ann joined her for jazz class. And we want to wish a Happy Anniversary #13 to our very good friends, Paul & Dayla.
Abby continued to feel better, so we allowed her to attend Pirateers practice early on Thursday morning. She then made up a test at school, which was very nice of her teacher. She later attended the soccer Sectional in North Vernon and ran around with friends. Luke bummed around the house and eventually backed the cars out of the driveway to play basketball. I walked 2.5 miles after work on a hot evening near 90! It was a quiet night watching our DVR’ed shows. We continued to watch as the storm bore down on the Florida coastline. Models show the Carolinas could be hit hard and Myrtle Beach has been evacuated, so it’s not looking good for our vacation there next week. We have lots of social media pictures to share this week.

Friday was a half day at work for Ann & I. We went to lunch at Arni’s (who now has a 50th Anniversary beer). Afterwards we ran errands and tied up loose ends like renting a car (Nissan Pathfinder), paid bills, mowed and trimmed the lawn & did laundry in prep for vacation. It was a nice warm day in the 80s. Thanks to Luke for the help with mowing. Later we went to Abby’s Pirateers performance at football’s Senior Night. Gma & her dance teacher, Laurie, were there as always to support her. We left after the halftime show as the boys were being routed by EC again. Bu went on to the South Decatur game to support her friend Damon while Ann & I took Luke to BWR for dinner & a beverage to kickoff our vacation week! Luke continued to be our official storm tracker that night as we watched Hurricane Matthew move in to South Carolina.
Saturday was Susan & Casey’s wedding. It was homecoming at FC. It was also my 25th reunion…and you know what that means next year, Annie??? :0) We were in contact with Bryan & Angie all day and continued to track the storm as it hit Myrtle Beach about 2 pm. Luke and I walked on the 5K track and then went out to lunch and did a little HW hunting as Abby slept and Ann went scrapbooking at Mrs. B’s. We hope to leave in the morning, depending on how quickly the water subsides. Either way, it sounds like we might have an adventure of some sort… Later, we played football out front and watched the Boilermakers. It was much cooler today, almost like A/C in the morning with a very strong breeze. It warmed up later but was a lazy, enjoyable first day of vacation for us. We went to ElRep for dinner and a cocktail and came home to take it easy.

We were up early and out the door on Sunday morning headed off on an adventure towards Myrtle Beach to meet up with the Messers and Kennedys. Where we will end up is still an unknown at this time. We don’t even know if the city is open or if the condo has power, but we’ll catch you up on that next time. Here we go…
Next we have our Waybac segment that continues to include our second six photo albums of our young family which has pictures from the turn of the century. We lead off this time with Matthew outside our Main St home, playing in the snow (he didn’t like sitting on top of that slide for us!) in January 1999; next we see our family enjoying Easter in April 1999; then we see Matt & I playing catch during his YMCA team’s t-ball practice (which I think was at the high school as the Y was still downtown at this point as they were building our current one) in June 1999; then Moe in Rossville in August 1999; Christmas morning on Main St in December 1999; Matt’s 4th birthday in G’burg in March 2000; on the beach at the Sand Pebble in Treasure Island, FL in May 2000; the view of the G’burg fireworks from Mom & Sandy’s backyard in July 2000; Christmas Eve at Gma & Gigi’s house in December 2000; Christmas morning on Main St in December 2000; Matt’s 5th birthday in Columbus at Chuck E Cheese pizza in March 2001; and the front booklet of a photo souvenir from a WDW ride called Dinosaur (named for the then-current movie) in May 2004 (the photo itself is still forthcoming). I’m not even sure if that ride is still there today…
