See the Girl Dance…See the Girl Dance

We had one of our typically busy weeks, here at the Scheu household. Matt is only two weeks away from wrapping up his first senior year at college and made it home this weekend. Abby wrapped up her competition dances for her high school career and worked several hours this week. Luke had a pair of track meets as well as baseball practices and spent the night at friends’ houses all weekend. Ann was in the height of her glory with dance this weekend but struggled with her knees and migraines. With the busy week, I struggled with both diet and exercise, only getting to about half of my weekly walking goal of 15 miles and having more few cheat meals than I’ve had the last two months combined. The week flew past us. Even though it started out regressing back to winter in the first part of the week, Spring finally began to show up, here in Indiana by week’s end. The trees are all budding, flowers are popping up, everyone’s mowing their grass – and with it all has come the dreaded seasonal allergies. The whole family has either a stuffy nose or itchy eyes right now, I think. Hello again and welcome back to the Scheu Family Blog.

Ann & Luke were up early for work & school on Monday morning. Abby slept in, not feeling well but eventually got up and went to school before heading over to Dixon to help teach class then had class herself with Kuyhlia, who missed the final cut of the Colt’s Cheerleader tryouts this past weekend. I had the day off to do weekly household chores, but since I ended up getting those done on Saturday (after the Franklin orientation debacle), I was happy to focus on working outdoors – the law was super long. I think we’re the last ones to mow our yard in the neighborhood…besides Mr. Green, but he runs on his own time schedule, so he doesn’t really count! LOL However, when I got up about mid-morning, I found it just above freezing and snowing! So, I flopped on the couch, watched a bunch of recorded shows and started wading through the 700 pictures we took in Dayton yesterday. Later, Luke & I were supposed to have baseball practice, but it got cancelled due to being so damn cold. That evening, I started watching another new Netflix series – this time, it’s the reboot of Lost in Space – the first few shows have been very good. Netflix is making some good stuff right now with this show, as well as a couple of my other favorites – Grace & Frankie and Jessica Jones. As promised, here are pictures and videos from last weekend’s dance competition in Dayton, Ohio.

We woke up to a frost warning on Tuesday morning. It was back to work for me and it was a fast, busy day that allowed me to only get in a little under 3 miles of walking. I got my hair cut finally – I was tired of looking like George Jones and decided to get it cut both shorter and more often (man, I’m really starting to get old!). Abby took the truck to work at Wings & Rings after school. Ann & I left work early to travel to St. Leon to watch Luke and the Jr High Pirates track team square off vs. East Central. It was their 2nd track meet of the year and a cold and windy night that made things challenging for both the spectators and the participants. Luke competed in the same four events as last week: discus (74’) – 4th place, shot put (39 ½’) – 2nd place, high jump (5’ 10”) – 3rd place, and 4×100 relay (he won his heat, but the 3rd > 4th baton pass was outside the box and they were DQ’ed). ☹ He was still pretty upset with his performance when I picked him up from school that night. On the way home, Ann & I stopped in Sunman to get gas and a snack – I ended up getting some boiled peanuts. I’d always wanted to try them, so I got a small bowl of Cajun style and brought them home. It was different but boy did it kill my gut…I had a belly ache all night.

I woke up on Wednesday sick to stomach from those damn boiled peanuts last night! If I never have them again, it’ll be too soon – my guy hurt all day despite a Pepcid and several Tums. The guys and I had lunch at Lowe’s as part of their customer appreciation annual celebration. We came back with some swag and a free meal. It was another fast day that culminated with only a 2.5 mile walk on a warmer but overcast afternoon in the upper 60s. Abby drove Betty White to school again but smartly took Tonya to get her nails done in Columbus. Luke had track practice after school. Ann & I left work early so Ann could go to her Girls’ Night Out dinner then headed up an After Prom meeting at the high school before ending up meeting up with Abby, over at DDS for tap & jazz practice. It was their last before they had their final competition this weekend. I took Luke to North Park for baseball practice, where we focused only on pitchers and catchers in a light rain. Due to the cold, wet conditions, we had a poor turnout. Luke & I got more gas station chicken for dinner (hey, it’s fast and easy) and fell asleep quickly. Here are pictures of Jamie’s birthday party last weekend.

Thursday was another cold morning with a frost warning. Abs took the truck again, and worked at BWR after school. Ann & I left work early again for track. It was Luke’s first home meet of the year. He was again in the same four events: 4×100 – 1st (51 sec); high jump – 2nd (5’10”); shot put – 2nd (39.5’) and discuss- 3rd (91’). We went to ElRep for dinner afterward where I had a margarita that put me to sleep as soon as we got home and I slept like a rock until morning.

We endured yet another hard frost on Friday morning. Luke went to track practice then to Drew’s house and spent the night with Bryan & Angie. Abby enjoyed her Senior Skip Day with Trevin. Ann & I had a half day at work so Ann could help Bu get prepared for dance competition. I had just enough time to finally get the lawn mowed before we took Abby up to Beach Grove High School for her last Showstoppers Regional. Matt met us up there to support his baby sister. Abs danced her tap routine with Kirsten to Jump, Shout, Boogie and they looked awesome, earning a Platinum award and taking 1st place in their division and 1st place overall in the age group! Way to go, Bu!! We stopped at O’Charley’s for dinner as has become our tradition, along with a shopping trip next door to Target afterward. We’ll have pictures of videos from this weekend in next week’s blog. Here are random pictures of our recent adventures.

After a short night, we were right back up before dawn on Saturday morning. Matt got to sleep in a little more, as he had to work at Aspen Place while Ann & I took Abby and headed back up to the south side of Indy for the Showstopper competition…and Abby’s final competitive dance of her high school career. She joined her friends Kirsten, Mary & Regan for their small group, jazz routine to Look what you Made Me Do. The girls made a couple mistakes but still earned a 2nd place gold trophy in their category and 5th overall in their age group. Afterward, Ann & I took Bu, Kirsten, Ainhoa and Regan to lunch at Scotty’s Brewhouse in Southport (I had a good craft draft beer – Thr3e Wise Men Snow Bunny Blonde) then came home to take naps. Meanwhile, Luke had baseball practice that morning with Bryan & Matt then he and his buddies went to his friend Cameron’s house for the day. That group of boys ended up at the Havilands to spend the night with Matt and Jess. When Matthew got home from work, he & Abigail played Fortnight on Luke’s PS4 for several hours. Ann ordered pizzas for dinner and we watched a couple movies on the big screen.

We finally enjoyed sleeping in on Sunday morning. Matt was the first one up, as he worked first shift at the old folks’ home kitchen. Abs was the next one up, as she worked first shift at Buffalo Wings & Rings. We eventually got around to our weekly household chores. I picked up Luke and ran some errands around town. We came home to work outdoors but Luke fell asleep and left me high & dry. I got the lawn trimmed and sprayed for weeds. The dandilions are bad already this year. Ann made tacos / taco salad for lunch. Memaw & Gigi came over to see the kids for a few minutes before Matt left to head back up to school. He only has two weeks left so finals start next week for him. Thankfully, he said it won’t be too crazy for him and he’s ready for a little bit of a break. His teachers are encouraging him to leave his current job and find something to do with kids. He plans to take a summer course also, but it will be online so he’ll get a nice break before his final year begins in the fall. Britney stopped by to see Abby that night and the kids played video games in the family room while Ann baked cookies and we watched Fear the Walking Dead and Talking Dead. It was a nice way to wind down a busy week and catch our breath before we start over again tomorrow… We have lots of social media pictures to share this week.

Next is our Waybac section, which continues to feature the last several from our next three photo albums of our young family just past the turn of the last century. We lead off again this week in May, 2002: Matt & Abby at the Sand Pebble – first in the pool with Mom then down in the Gulf of Mexico with Ann and then Matt, Abs & Ann at Walt Disney World; then we move on to December, 2002 again: Ann’s work Xmas party, Dee & Chad’s birthday party at Mom & Sandy’s house; Christmas Eve traditional stuff at our home and then Matt’s basketball awards day at the YMCA; and we end up in January, 2003 for Anns’ birthday and goofy Bu at the Ryle home.
