Things are really picking up around the Scheu abode. Luke is in the midst of a three-sport season, participating in numerous events this week from five football practices to three basketball practices and even two baseball games. Abby took the next step towards going to college, spent time with friends, worked a bunch of hours and even spent some quality time with her family! Matt worked full time this week, got to spend some time with Taylor and spent a lot of time with the family, which was awesome. We know these moments are fleeting and that it won’t be long before both of them are gone to school, so we try to enjoy every moment. With all the kids around the house, the dogs are better behaved and everything is right in the world…although we do go through the TP a lot faster! Ann continued to struggle with her knees and swelling and now has some allergy stuff going on as well – it’s always something with her, isn’t it? Still, she puts on a brave face and doesn’t let it slow her down. I got back on my keto diet and lost three pounds this week (Ann is slaying it with 10 pounds over the last couple weeks!) and met my goal by walking nearly 20 miles despite the nutty weather we endured. Overall, it was a fun, fast week. The only thing that would’ve made it better was if we still had the old pool in the backyard! Hello again and welcome back to the Scheu Family Blog.
I was up early on Monday morning to take Luke to football practice at the Fieldhouse. He stayed afterward to attend basketball practice where he was again asked to play in the tourney that evening. However, he had to turn the coach down in order to attend football practice that night. Ann had the day off to take Abby up to Franklin for college orientation all day. While there, Ann ran into a couple of old sorority sisters on campus! I had a long day at work and then walked a 5K on a rainy day. Matt worked at Aspen Place then went out to Pizza King with his buddies. That evening, Abby drove the Crossfire up to Trafalgar to visit Megan for a couple days. Later, Ann & I spent a quiet night watching the new Tomb Raider movie on the big screen.
Tuesday should’ve been Mom’s 69th birthday. This would’ve wrapped up Mom’s special time of year (Mother’s Day, Week 19, anniversary and bday). Ann & I were up early for work. We are too old to be staying up late to watch movies as we were both tired and had long days. I walked a 5K on another rainy then went to Best Buy where they changed the glass cover on my new phone. Matt drove up to Centerville to see Taylor and spend the night with her. Abby enjoyed the day with Megan – they went hiking in Brown Co then rode horses as well! Luke enjoyed sleeping in before doing a few chores around the house and then had football practice that night.
Ann & I struggled to get up and go back to work on Wednesday. Thankfully, we both had a fast day then I walked a 5K with a storm all around me. It really helped me to pick up the pace and I had some of my fastest times of the year! We drove home through some pretty nasty stuff that evening. Meanwhile, Luke was up early for basketball practice. He was not asked to play in the tourney that evening and so he informed the coach that he would only be available for tourney games on Wednesdays due to football the rest of the summer. Instead, he stayed the night at his buddy Kameron’s house. Abby returned from Raglafart and had to work at Wings & Rings. Matt enjoyed the day off. Ann received a fresh bucket of Fireworks popcorn that evening, so she made 4 huge bowls of it for dinner for Matt, Abby and the two of us. After a quick nap, we decided to play some euchre. It was boys vs. girls – boys took 1st game and the girls took the 2nd. We put off a rubber match so Matt could Facetime Taylor and the rest of us went on to bed. Here are pictures of Luke and the Marlins winning their first game last week against the Franklin Co Remax team.
On Thursday, Matt was up early for work at Aspen Place. Abby work at BWR. Ann & I had fast days at work then I walked 3.5 miles. Luke had a very busy day of football practice early in the morning. Afterward, he stuck around and had basketball practice. Next, he went back out to Kameron’s house and the boys went swimming at the city pool before coming home that afternoon to do a few chores around the house and take a nap. That night he had a baseball game vs. Milan. Luke started at catcher then moved to 1st base as Nate was back and ready to resume his catching duties. Luke went 2-3 from the plate with a single, double and nearly legged out an infield hit to short. In fact, I’m not sure he wasn’t safe. He had 4 RBI, stole 3 bases and scored a pair of runs, including the winning run – yes, we won our 2nd straight game that night! In fact we run-ruled them 10-0 in five innings! As with our first win, there was drama at the end of this game – the opposing coach came out and argued a call at the plate. Booney was up with Luke on 2nd base. As Luke attempted to steal 3rd base, the catcher went to throw the ball and Booney stepped out of the batter’s box and got in the catcher’s way. It was a clear case of inference and the batter could’ve been called out. Instead, the umpire said that because the catcher chose to go around Booney and throw the ball, there was no interference. The incident caused the ball to sail into left field and Luke came home on the overthrow to score the winning run. Their coach was so belligerent that he was thrown out of the game after screaming and cussing at the umpire and the league official. In the end, it really didn’t matter as the game was over. The last time we played (and won), the FC Remax coach was also ejected for arguing with the umpire when Drew stepped off the mound and picked off a runner leading off too far from 3rd base to make the final out to win the game. Matthew (our good luck charm) was there in the dugout with us again. The Scheu & Messer girls rooted us on from behind the right field fence. The older ones enjoyed some porch time out there. Afterward, Luke & Drew jumped in the back of Betty White and talked Bryan & I into taking the families out to Wings for dinner. Here are pictures of Luke and the Marlins playing in that weird game last week when they faced the two Franklin County teams simultaneously.
Matt, Abby, Ann & I all went in to work on Friday morning. Ann had a cardiologist appointment that went well. They are going to try a few different things to help with the swelling she’s experiencing. My day flew by before I walked about 3 ¼ miles on a hot/humid afternoon. I was so sweaty afterward that the van was stinky for two days! I left a little early to run some errands before I took Luke out to the complex to play baseball vs. the Cubs again. We’ve lost to them a few times already over the season – usually badly…but tonight the boys had a renewed sense of confidence in their abilities and it showed in all facets of the game. We hit the ball well and ran the bases well. We played good defense – Luke, particularly, made an outstanding play over at first base on a foul ball by the fence. As he caught it, he sprinted back to first where the runner had strayed too far from the base and tagged him out! The biggest difference though is in our pitching – which was really good again. The game was close through the 1st but we blew it open in the 2nd, batting around the order (sent 13 to bat) and coasted to a 11-5 win. Luke went 1-1 but reached base safely in all three plate appearances. He had a single, a walk and was hit on the elbow with a loud crack! He was down for a couple minutes but he was fine. He also had 2 RBIs, stole 3 bases (got caught once, going to 3rd) and scored a pair of runs. Coach Nobbe came out to watch the game and we chatted with him afterward. The kids went out to ElRep while Ann and I came home to cool down and grab something from the fridge. Later, Luke showered and went to Garrett’s house until late while we played a couple more games of euchre with the older ones. We each won one apiece again to keep the series tied. Spending time with the kids in this new way is the greatest Father’s Day present I received this year – I really enjoyed spending time with them like this! Here are random pictures from our recent adventures.
Matt was up early for work on Saturday morning. Abby went to spend the day and night with Trevin and his family, who were back from vacation. Luke & I mowed/trimmed at Mom & Sandy’s house, despite their objections. Granted, it was hot but it wasn’t that bad. We came home to mow/trim our house and were soaked by the time we got done. Luke went with Tyler to go swimming with a group of friends then stayed the night at Drew’s house. Matt came home and ate dinner with Ann & I, who made a delicious cheesy broccoli chicken rice casserole (mine was a keto-friendly cauliflower rice substitute). We enjoyed a quiet night of watching movies and DVR’ed shows on the big screen until we both fell asleep…damn, we’re old farts!
We tried to sleep in on Father’s Day morning, but the dogs had other ideas. I think they got up when Matt went to work and I couldn’t fall back to sleep. Abby was next to head out of the house for work. We got up and did our weekly household chores. Later, we picked up Luke from the Messers and ran out to Walmart. We relaxed in the A/C while it was boiling hot outside. The heat index was well above 100°. It was nice to talk to Tom and Ron and catch up real quick. They are both doing well and were taking it easy, avoiding the heat. Ann made dinner and invited Mom & Sandy over to join the kids and us. Unfortunately, Mom didn’t feel well and so Gigi came over and got takeout. ???? Ann made pasta salad, her homemade Shallo’s dip and veggies and cheeseburgers on the grill for my Father’s Day meal. The new tank of propane from Walmart worked great and the burgers were perfect! We will never again use the tanks from BP. This is the 3rd bad tank in a row from them over the past two seasons. This meal choice was in lieu of the traditional lasagna that she usually makes for me. I thought it would be too much of a temptation to eat it and then keep eating (as I know I would) throughout the week until it was gone. Granted, she did offer to make it with keto-friendly ingredients but it sounded like way too much work. Besides, this way everyone liked and ate my choice of dinner (the kids usually poo-poo her lasagna). Ann had a keto dessert for me and some Hot Wheels presents to make the day perfect! After dinner, the kids played a couple games of Euchre with Ann & I. Matt & I won the rubber match and took the series this week 3-2. After the game, Matt went up to Indy to stay the night at his apartment before attending a Russ concert with Taylor at Deer Creek tomorrow night. No, that’s not Rush, but Russ. I’ve never heard of them, but I’m sure the kids will enjoy the show – I’ve never seen a bad show out there under the stars. Luke jumped in to take his place and we ended up beating the girls in his first ever game! Way to go, Duke! Later, we watched a movie called Spinning Man (Pierce Brosnan) on the big screen and then caught the highlights of the NASCAR race before finally calling it a night to get some rest before we do it all again next week! We have lots of social media pictures to share this week.
Next up is our Waybac featurette, which has only a few pix left from that last batch. I believe this will be the penultimate group from this batch before I have to hit the scanner for more pix. We lead off this week down in Florida again for our vacation at Walt Disney World in Orlando in May 2002 and then we skip forward to December 2002 for the Bryan Family Christmas at Vird & Belinda’s house in Indy and then to Memaw & Gigi’s house on Christmas Eve on Main St.
We wrap it up with our video section which features seven new family movies from this week as well as several from around the internet.
And that does it for this week’s entry of the Scheu Family Blog. Thanks for keeping up with us this time out and we’ll catch up with you again next time. We miss ya, Birthday Gal.
Later, Scheu
