…And have a Picnic on Labor Day

We had a short work week with the unofficial end of summer coming on Labor Day. Weather-wise, though, this week felt just like it always does in this area of the country – hot & humid. That didn’t stop us from getting out and about, though. Matt had a full week of work in Indy and also did some stuff in Zionsville with the school as well. Abby worked in Greenwood and spent her off-time with Will and the Sigs. She stayed in Franklin all week again, though we did get to see her a couple times. I also went up there to see her for a bit as well. Luke continued to attend his Fire classes in Indy with his buddy Alex, did his landscaping work – despite not feeling well – and spent time each day with Samantha. Annie passed up an opportunity to spend time with her scrapping buddies but did enjoy some time with our friends this weekend. She had a busy first week back to work after being closed for a week. Despite the challenges of work and the weather, I still managed to log over 17 miles, besting my goal by a couple miles. I played two new golf courses in the area this week as I played 117 holes of disc this week in four different cities. I was excited to have the NFL season kickoff this week…and with it our “Coaches Meetings??? / Poker Night! However, it brought on mixed feelings because although its football season, the Cowboys lost, the Colts tied and the Pirates got shellacked. Only the Boilers won this week for me…and to add injury to insult, I got blown-out by Matt in fantasy football and Dak got injured…gonna be a long season again… To top it off, our webhosting solution changed hands and brought with it a bunch of issues with our website. In fact, it was pretty messed up and caused this post to be delayed. However, if you’re reading this then we must’ve gotten it eventually sorted out… Hello and welcome to the latest edition of the Scheu Family Blog.

Ann & I enjoyed sleeping in on Monday, which was Labor Day. We slowly got up and did the weekly household chores and watched an SVU marathon on USA on and off all day. We napped and took it easy, lazing away the day with the dogs in our comfy clothes. It looked like it was going to rain all day but I think it only rained about 10 minutes or so. I spent the day editing all the pictures and videos for this week’s blog. I forgot about fasting and wound up eating that day. Oops… I was hoping to get motivated to go play some golf, but that didn’t happen either. We turned on Apple+ and wrapped up season one of Surface then began a new series called Black Bird. It’s pretty interesting and is based on an actual Indiana serial killer. I believe it was Ray Liotta’s last role. It has a really good soundtrack so far to boot! We also began a new series on ID called Disappeared. We both fell asleep to it, so not sure if we can give an accurate description of it…but we did like Surface. It had enough twists to keep you interested and it seems like they set up the finale for a second season as well. After storming really hard overnight, Luke took Sam home then stayed the night at Oak’s house. He got home around noon and then had Sam over later that evening. It rained a little that night and we lost power again. That’s four times in 48 hours. And like 4 times in the last four years combined. Weird. Ann made cheesy Fireworks popcorn for dinner and rested up because we knew the morning would be coming all too soon. After Ann went to bed, I watched most of The Rise of Skywalker before joining her in bed and finishing the movie there… Here are pictures of Ann & the girls at their Florida retreat last weekend.

Tuesday morning came waaay too early. I thought it was a joke at first, but I grudgingly got up and slowly got in the shower as we did our morning routine. Ann seemed to have a much easier time of it than I, as we made it to work about 10 minutes earlier than our usual time! It was a fast morning, as you might imagine after a long weekend. They are really struggling to staff the building right now. If you or anyone you know is interested in working, we have plenty of hours – plus they’re paying some great bonuses to pick up extra shifts…and have been for over a year now. I got my paperwork caught up, went to Jim’s meeting with the management before grabbing Ann and heading over to see Jami for our monthly haircuts. Afterward, Brent & I grabbed a bite to eat at Five Guys. It wasn’t my first choice but I did enjoy it… I worked on our plan of corrections for the Health & Sanitation survey done by the state a week or so ago and got it all submitted. After work, I played 18 holes of golf at the AirPark course. I was in fine form, equaling my personal best with 48, thanks to a pair of 24’s. Ann & I stopped at Amoco for gas and cherry limeade slushes at their attached Sonic drive thru. I dropped Ann off at home and headed out to the park to play another 18 holes of golf. I had a pretty good round on the front 9 with a 23. I was approached by another player as I was beginning my round on the back 9 and we played the round together. He was really good and helped me learn about my release and my discs. I threw a 25 to end with a 48 for the night. He wanted to go another round, but I had to bow out and head home because I was pretty tired and sweaty after 36 holes that evening. He told me about a nice course that just opened in Rushville that I might try to check out on Friday or maybe later this month. When I got home, Ann had a delicious pasta dish waiting on me that really hit the spot that night. Abby and I were able to get into her backup laptop so that Ann can use it for scrapbook photos. I got it all up and running (it’s been off since J-Term) and updated, so it’s ready for her now. We watched the next episode of Black Bird until Ann fell asleep. After she went to bed, I put on the final episode of Hard Knocks on HBO. I talked with Abby for a while that evening. We made plans for her to come home tomorrow night. She needs to get her oil changed in Tonya, so I hooked her up with Drew – who’s staying open late for her tomorrow evening. She’s going to meet me out at the park to play some golf and then we’ll grab dinner and maybe watch the new Rick & Marty episode that premiered this past weekend. Meanwhile, Luke woke up not feeling well. He said he had a little fever overnight and woke up with a sore throat. He didn’t let it slow him down as he went to his Fire 1 class that evening with Alex. He talked with me for a bit when he got home. When he started cooking his dinner, I went on to bed.

Wednesday was a little easier to get out of bed…but not much. We were not early that day, but we did make it on time. I had a busy morning, putting away all the stock that I ordered on Friday. I was actually just a few minutes late getting our new hires and starting orientation due to all the stuff I had to put away. Brent & I trained two new staff members that day, which we desperately needed. Afterward, I joined management in our daily flash meeting…but this time it was with our new corporate clinical director. She was there to do a mock survey to prep us for JCAHO. She had some unique insights, so it was good that she was there. It’s funny how different consultants have different perspectives. Just when you get used to what one person likes, they move on and then you have to adjust to what the next person focuses on. I worked on a couple other projects that afternoon, sat in on a webinar and caught up my paperwork before debriefing with Jim & Brent and called it a day. Brent was headed down to Florida and then on to the Caribbean for his honeymoon for the next couple weeks. I went across the street and played 9 holes on the Columbus Airpark course. I didn’t set any PB but did throw my Katana 318’ on the 9th hole on my way to a 25. I picked up Ann and we had a good talk about our days during our commute home. I dropped her off and went out to the park when we got back to town. I played the front 9 and found myself on the struggle bus to start before finally getting into the groove and finished with a 24. Abby got off work and drove to town that evening. She needed an oil change, so she made an appointment with Drew at Tree City Lube then joined me on the course when she finished. We played 9 with her on the front tees and me on the backs. I continued to struggle a bit and it was close heading to the island, where I opened up a bit of a margin and went on to win by 3 strokes with a par at 27. It was nice to get outside with Abs and catch up. We went home to get Ann and do a load of laundry (typical kid, eh?) before going out for a quick bite to eat at ElRep. We enjoyed our tacos and margaritas while Bu filled us in on the happenings at work, with Will and at the Sig house. Apparently, I was eating my chips aggressively and we had a good laugh at my expense. ???? We came back to finish Abs’ laundry and watched the latest episode of Rick & Marty. Afterward, we said our goodbyes and sent her back up to Franklin. I had opted for the 48 ouncer that night and swore there wasn’t any tequila in it…until after Abby left and we tried to watch the next episode of Black Bird and I promptly fell asleep – lol. Meanwhile, Luke slept in that day and wasn’t feeling the greatest. He skipped his workout routine and took it easy that day. He did eventually go over to see Sam and ate dinner with her family to celebrate her grandma’s birthday. Here are random pictures from our recent adventures.

It was another cool, foggy morning with temps starting in the low 50s again. It was another stupid busy day at work. Ann said her day was equally busy, as she helped out up front again. I hit the ground running that morning, getting right to it. There’s a lot going on and as I walked in, I learned that the Joint Commission is coming to survey the facility in a week or so – at the same time State Licensing is scheduled to survey us as well. Thankfully, Tena got that pushed back a few weeks so we can focus on TJC only. We still had our clinical advisor in-house that day and of course, all the conversations revolved around the upcoming triennial survey. I touched base with the Fleetwood crew, who had the parking lot blocked off and had us all parking in the front yard that day. I followed up Johnson Controls and they wound up sending a technician out that day to fix the maglock outside the gym school room that was malfunctioning. I also followed up with Continuant, who is working on the phone line issue. Simplex Grinnell called me that morning and said that they had lost communication with our panel again. There will be a phone guy on-sight tomorrow morning. So, I communicated with the staff to give them updates and met with Vic, Roy & Lenny to let them know what was going on and what the plan was for all the stuff going on. The management team met for a couple hours with the UHS gal then broke for lunch, where I caught up paperwork and attended a webinar. We met again for a couple hours that afternoon until we left that night. We have a few things to get on top of, but we have plenty of time. Although I got out of work late, I was able to play 9 holes at the Columbus AirPark course. I thew my Katana really well and nearly birdied the last 4 holes! I did manage to birdie a couple holes but also bogied one to finish 1-under. We stopped at Needler’s on the way through town to get supplies to make the “sammich??? for me to take to Poker Night as well as stuff to take tomorrow night at the Sunken Boat Bar party. For opening night (of cards and NFL games), we gathered at Coach Nobbe’s house. That night we had most of the guys there, including Bryan, Rick, Shawn, Mark, Bob & myself. Bob’s son Cole was with us, but he didn’t play. Instead, he worked “IT??? – getting the football game for us via the internet. He had issues with it stopping the feed about every 10-15 minutes, but he did great with getting it right back up and going. We had a lot of great food, including Ann’s “Sammich???, Shawn’s steak bites, Bryan’s meatballs, Shawn’s “crack dip,??? a couple plates of meat & cheese (always a hit) as well as several bags of chips and Rick’s persimmons roles – yum! There was plenty of adult beverages and some good cards. Well, good for Bryan & Rick; less good for the rest of us – LOL. The football game was less than stellar – as the Bills blew out the Rams. We called it a fairly early night and I was home before midnight. I tried to say up and re-watch the new Rick & Morty episode but fell asleep and finally went to bed at about two in the morning… We have lots of social media pictures to share this week.

Friday morning came way too early and I hit snooze a half dozen times before finally dragging my ass out of bed. Ann & I did our normal Friday routine by hitting the Dunkin drive thru (the guy knows us so well, ordering for us before we can get it out of our mouths!), dropping off Ann at her downtown office and then running a couple errands. I returned to the house to work from home that day. We had a long meeting, regarding our punch list for the upcoming Joint Commission survey, with the management team and then I started in on my responsibilities. I was planning to do reports that day, but instead, I focused on IT policies, dietary processes, did a risk assessment and moved a few projects forward, with help from Vic as my boots on the ground. I worked until about 5 or so then headed north to Rushville to play a round at their new golf course, called River’s Edge. It was tough to find the start of the course. I wandered around for about 10-15 minutes before finally figuring it out. I had to do the same with many of the holes because the signs and pads didn’t always match up and the little wooden arrows they had rigged up under the baskets to show you where to go next were mostly blown-off from the big storm last weekend. The course itself was fun. I somehow managed to completely skip holes 6 & 7 and went straight from 5 to 8. I just took a par for those two and kept moving. I had already wasted enough time finding the holes and then was stopped by some guy in the park, who had questions about the sport and how to get into it. The course had 18 unique holes that run the gamut from wooded to open field, left and right, short and long. I had a good time; except on 10 when I threw to the wrong basket and had to start over. I think I pissed off another golfer when I accidentally went from 5 to 8 and then had to restart 10. He finished 9 and left in a huff…oops… I will definitely go back to play again. There were about a dozen others out playing that evening, which was great to see. I did see where they’re holding a free concert on the 17th and have a couple national recording artists performing – including Molly Hatchet! As for my game, I shot a 52, which is 5 under par (57). I drove home, got cleaned-up and Ann & I went out to see Bryan & Angie at the Sunken Boat Bar. Ann had taken a long nap then got up and made jalapeno popper dip as well as some amazing blondie brownies with iced cookies on top – WOW! The Messers hosted a party for all their friends that had graduated their final child from high school. There were about 10 couples there and we had a really good time seeing everyone. It was a fun mix of couples and again enjoyed some great food, many adult beverages and a shared experience of having kids out of school for the first time in a dozen or more years (we went 23, I think?). Angie had a fun little presentation she went through that was cool. We had a great time and after everyone had left, it was just us, the Messers and the Lowes outside, around the fire just talking and I had a half of a stogie before we called it a night. Luke had a busy day, mowing here at the house, as well as Gma & Gigi’s and DuVall’s house. The mower was acting up for him, smoking real bad and shutting off. We need to look at it this weekend and see what’s going on…but I did notice that he had waaaaay too much oil in it. Not sure what that does to the engine, but I need to figure out a way to drain the oil out of it somehow. I think the air filter might be dirty as well, which may account for why it’s shutting off. He got cleaned up and ran over to Batesville to help set up for a party with Sam’s family. They returned to the house to watch a movie and hang out before he ran her home late that night. Abby went up to Indy to celebrate Najib’s 22nd birthday (again) with Will and got back late. I hope she’s still able to play golf with me tomorrow…

We enjoyed sleeping in on Saturday morning. I slowly got up and cleaned-up a few things as well as did a couple things with the blog. Eventually, I got cleaned-up and drove to Franklin to pickup Abby at the Sig house. She was a little “tired??? from last night, so she was a little slow getting going. I waited for about 10 minutes at the Sig house for her to come out. Although the temp wasn’t too high, the humidity was up there and the sun was really hot. Abs threw her Leopard disc into the water on only her second throw. She didn’t play any other holes, but rather walked with me and talked about last night’s activities. There was a guy waiting to throw behind us, so I told him he could play through. Instead, he asked if he could join us. He looked lonely, so I said yes. I followed suit on the very next hole, on only my fourth throw of the day, throwing my River disc into the damn pond. We tried to fish both discs out with my extending pole, but it was too late for both – especially mine, which was too far out to even have a chance of recovery. I wound up throwing a 29, which is a one-over-par, thanks to the penalty stroke with the water issue. Abs was tired, sweaty and a little whiny so we stopped at 9 and walked back to the car. We went to Mike’s Grill Bar for lunch and a beer. Their burgers are just plain special… We sat at the bar and cooled down. I ordered a replacement River disc while we waited on our food. Afterward, I took her back to campus and went in to talk to Will and the boys. Will has a new bedroom, which is just off the Red Room – right up front. It’s big – there’s a sitting room and a separate bedroom so when we go there for Homecoming, we’ll have plenty of room. I watched a little of the Alabama game with the guys then said my goodbyes. Afterward, I went back out to the Blue Heron course to play 18 holes. As I began to tee off from the first hole, our new friend joined me and wanted to play the round with me. I’m glad he did, as he was able to help guide me through the course. We wound up throwing the alternate back 9, which winds back through the woods, rather than back out around the pond. I had some good shots…and some less than stellar ones. The course we played called for a par of 57. I shot par, which I was happy to achieve! I was sweaty, sore and worn-out by the time I finished. All told, I got in 14K steps and over 3 ˝ miles of exercise. When I got home, I got cleaned-up, took some Advil and found my comfy spot on the couch with the dogs. Ann ordered us Papa John’s for dinner. We got a pair of those new Toppings Bowls (or whatever they’re called) and breadsticks. We watched a few episodes of the weekly SUV marathon on Ion and then we put the new Top Gun movie (Maverick) on the big screen. Luke & Sam came home just before the end of the movie. They had been out to her aunt’s house for a few hours and then he went out with his buddies to Top Golf, up in Indy. Here are pictures of recent additions to my Hot Wheels collection.

We all slept in on Sunday morning, which was Patriot Day (9/11). I didn’t see any specials advertised and I think that’s a little weird, considering how much was on last year on the tenth anniversary of the event. I was the first up that morning and did a few things around the house before getting to our weekly household chores once Annie moved out to the living room. We watched a couple fantasy football shows and adjusted our lineups. Our website continued to be severely impacted by the new Turbify acquisition. I noticed it started having issues on Friday, when I tried to check my disc log, which is a new feature linked off the main home page. It worked and then it stopped. Then, I tried to upload new files for this week’s blog yesterday and had trouble logging in to the site via my FTP software. I tried everything I knew to do for a couple hours before opening a ticket. In the process, I may have screwed up a couple settings. Plus, it looks like the blog page needs a software update that I don’t know how to do. So, I opened a ticket last night with the new company. They answered overnight, asking for more information. So, I worked with that new company that took over our web hosting earlier this week. They’ve obviously screwed a few things up because its not just our site that’s having issues but I’ve read on the web that this is a much larger issue, affecting many sites since this new acquisition. This happened the last two times there was a changeover as well. Back in January, Verizon took over for Aabaco and back in 2017, Aabaco took over the Yahoo portion of webhosting. In both cases, I had to open tickets to have them fix what they screwed up. After raining on and off overnight, it was dark and cloudy that morning. It rained a little before the sun finally popped out, just as kickoffs were occurring for the early games of the new NFL season. We flipped between the Colts game and RedZone for the first few hours then stuck with just RedZone until the Cowboys game came on that evening. There were some cool endings to the early games during the “witching hour??? with several games going down to the wire and two games going into OT. The Colts wound up with a tie – the first for them that I can ever remember. Luke spent the day with Sammi, going to her aunt’s house to help clean-up and then came back to the house to hang out here for a few hours. He took Sam out to dinner at Pizza King then ran her home and hurried back to catch the Cowboys game kickoff. Even though I couldn’t do anything with it, I went ahead and finished up the blog, including writing out the html code. It got really cloudy and windy, late in the afternoon, which blew in a storm quickly. It caught us with the dogs outdoors and by the time we got them in, they were soaked! ???? Ann made us cheesy Fireworks popcorn for dinner that evening. In between games, I was able to watch the cup race from Kansas and saw the 18th different winner of race this season when Bubba pulled off the big win. The Cowboys game was great on one hand – the defense played its ass off! However, the offense looked horrible and to make matters worse – Prescott injured the thumb on his throwing hand. Despite Dak’s lackluster performance, the entire offense (line, backs & receivers) all struggled. There were so many penalties and such poor execution. Elliott was the only one that actually looked good that night – but they didn’t even play him the entire time, splitting time with Pollard. They’re gonna have to figure it out fast because the other teams in the division all won, I think. I eventually turned the game off and just went on to bed, in preparation of a busy week ahead of me and my co-workers…

Next up is our Waybac section which continues to feature pictures from Deanna’s digital camera in mostly 2007. We lead off, however, in December 2006 where we see Abby and Gma/Gigi’s dogs over in the Main St. home. Then we move on to 2007: March has Gigi on the mayoral campaign trail; April sees the Gigster Group at the Red’s game; in May we have a family get-together at our home in Memorial Day weekend; in June, we see Abby helping to make Luke’s birthday cake with Gma as well as the kids enjoying summer vacation at our home; in July we see the kids at the Eiteljorg Museum, all sorts of fun during the 4th of July weekend, Grace’s birthday, the Tree City car show & Sandy’s birthday; there’s a great picture of Dee & Grace in August; we see pix from the Van Halen concert in October; and then we have a couple pictures from the Owens family Christmas Eve party at the old Main St. home.
