Man, what a long week we’ve endured since we last touched base. At work, we began prepping for our tri-annual Joint Commission survey. That meant that on top of all my other responsibilities that needed to be kept up, I also had to make room for extra stuff to help prep the facility. Thankfully, we pride ourselves on being survey-ready at any time so there honestly wasn’t that much to do, but there’s always that low-hanging fruit you want to try and clean-up. Outside of work, we had a pretty good week with the temps cooler overall. Matt continued working from home and is actually liking his new job. We enjoyed seeing he & Taylor this weekend for a little while. He still hasn’t gotten any resolution with his TV, so he grabbed one from the house to borrow until he gets his big screen back. Luke continued doing his yard jobs and has started to grow the business a little at a time. He is focused on buying a truck online in order to continue to grow his business while he works out and attends the Fire classes with Alex while seeing Samantha as much as possible. But it was Abby who had the biggest week of all of us, celebrating her twenty-third birthday for about 72 hours. I think she got everything she asked for this year…. It was great to see Will & her this weekend as well…and glad to hear they survived all the festivities this weekend. …Ahh…to be young and twenty-something again… Ann had a full week of work that went really good. I think she did more cooking this week than she has all month! Besides stressing a little over work, I had an issue with the minivan that will need Jerry’s attention when he gets from vacation next week. I only played 9 rounds of disc golf this week, but I did play a new (to me) course, which was pretty cool and I finally got my first hole-in-one! I logged about 11 miles of exercise and lost another three pounds. I need to break down and buy a new smart watch as I missed a couple meetings, was constantly late and missed several calls & texts. We got our website working, thanks to Customer Support. We enjoyed spending a little time with Mom & Sandy this week and got out to do some adult fun with Justin & Amanda to boot. We got into full swing with fantasy football this week and look forward to many of our favorite TV shows debuting new seasons next week. The days are getting shorter and shorter. It won’t be long before our commutes will be completely dark again. Overall, it was a good week, but it flew by. I hope to play a little more golf next week…Hello again; and welcome to the latest edition of the Scheu Family Blog.
The week started off with a cool Monday with temps down in the lower 50s. It felt amazing – like a fall day should…even though officially it wasn’t quite fall yet. It was a typical Monday for us at work, staying busy the whole time. I know I looked up and couldn’t believe it was 4 pm – mostly because my watch took a dump over the weekend and won’t even turn on any longer. I feel naked without it and have a gnarly tan line where it has rested on my arm for the last few years. For something I didn’t think I needed, I sure miss it now. I couldn’t tell you how many calls and texts I missed from work that day. It was in the double digits. We reopened a large portion of our parking lot that day and I verified the work done by JCI on the maglock in the gym and the AT&T work on the fire panel. Everything looked great. We met with the management team and the corporate clinical gal to share notes and give updates on our survey readiness. We are looking pretty good, being a week out. We pride ourselves at being survey-ready at all times, but it’s always wise to cross your t’s and dot your i’s. Storage areas are always a challenge for us, since we are so limited in our space – so it was natural that we started there that day. I made much progress with updating policies and procedures for IS/IT – which was my final section. I had already done it once but then they rolled out a bunch of new ones over the summer, so I went ahead and just updated everything again. I got out just in time to go play one round of golf on the airport property. It was cool and very windy that afternoon. I had my best throw ever on hole three, landing it on the island for the first time and getting a birdie. It would turn out to be my only one as I parred everything else, struggling with the wind and finishing with a 26. I fasted that day but by the time we got home I was pretty hungry. After skipping last week, I found it hard to get through the evening portion. I was hoping that a round of golf at the park would take my mind off it but then it started raining… So, instead, I just made dinner and watched some TV. We talked to Matt that night. He’s still having trouble with his TV and had to open up a 2nd ticket with Samsung. Ann & I just got that for him last March (2021), so we’re very disappointed that it broke down after just 18 months of use. We watched a few DVR’d shows and promptly fell asleep. Luke woke us up when he got back from lifting weights at the YMCA. I went to bed and Ann followed after helping Luke decompress. Here are random pictures from our recent adventures.

Tuesday morning came way too early again. I should not have been tired after sleeping like eight hours that night, but I had severe dragon-ass. It was another cool start to the day with temps again down in the 50s. It was overcast all day again and never got out of the 70s – perfect, if you ask me! It was another very busy day at work for me, as we continued to prepare for next week’s survey. It’s not like we’re that out of sync, but we don’t want to have any issues at all, if we can avoid it. Truly, after the Covid years’ isolation – it will be a good test of readiness next week. I’m not saying I’m scared, but I’m not quite as sure of myself as in years past because so many things have changed. After work, I got out and played a quick round of disc golf at the AirPark next door. Unlike yesterday, the wind was almost non-existent. As a result, I had a few really great throws. I nearly hit a hole-in-one on the 3rd hole, landing my Tee Devil on the island for the first time ever. I also had a 300’ shot on 7, birdying both holes and ending with a 24, one off my PB. On our way home, we got gas at the Amoco and grabbed slushes at the adjoining Sonic. I dropped Annie off and headed out to the park to play 18 holes of golf. I got off to a decent start, but nothing special until I got to the 4th hole. I’ve been getting better with my new Warden disc and that day I finally achieved my first hole-in-one! I was pretty excited as I headed on to the next hole, obviously. On the next hole (the island), I had another great tee shot, that landed just a couple feet from the basket. There was a teenager that came down off the big bridge and went down and picked it up, attempting to throw it back to me. I explained that it was a golf disc and that I was trying to put it in the basket. I asked him to see if he could do it for me and he did! I barely missed a long putt on 6 but birdied the rest to finish with a 20 – one off my PB. I was still feeling pretty good as I teed off 10 and wound up with a birdie on that hole and the next three as well. I parred 5 after throwing my tee shot into the bushes. The teenager was out on the fairway with a big group of his peers and what I assume was their staff. Instead of throwing my normal disc, I went down to a slower one to avoid the crowd. When I did, I threw it horribly and it went right into the bushes to the left. I looked for 10 minutes on my own and with the help of a couple of passing fishermen. Finally the kids and their staff walked down and offered to help. I asked the boy from the previous encounter if he saw where it went in (because I was blocked from seeing it due to a tree. He mentioned that it went in pretty level pretty high. Sure enough, he was right on the money and I spotted it up high, right in plain sight! I played it where it was hanging and wound up with a par! I also parred holes 6 and 8 with birds on the rest to finish with a 21 – giving me a new personal best of 41 for the round of 18! Although I was excited, I was also pretty tired and still had to get in touch with Verizon Small Business that evening, who is now doing my web hosting. I wound up doing a chat session with a lady in India, who was able to help me with one issue but had to escalate my two other issues up to a higher level of support. By the time we finished, it was pretty late. I wound up skipping dinner and decided to do a 24 hour fast again. We watched a couple TV shows while Ann read and I worked on some new additions to my music collection. Meanwhile, Luke took it easy that day – still resting up from not feeling well. In fact, he and Sam have both felt a little sick for a few days now. He eventually got up and got going before riding with Alex up to New Palestine for their Fire 1 class. He got back pretty late, just as Ann was going to bed. I stayed up a little too late again and then couldn’t fall asleep for like an hour or so when I finally did go to bed. I think my mind was just so preoccupied with everything going on that it was actually stressing me out…something that I normally don’t do much of…
We enjoyed another great start to the morning on Wednesday. In fact, it was so cool (40s) that there was some pretty dense fog. I even got to use our fog lights for the first time in a while that morning. It was the 10th anniversary of Mom’s funeral, which was obviously on my mind all day… It was an even faster day (how is that even possible) for me that day. I did some policy updates before realizing I was nearly missing my doctor appointment that morning at CRH. I hate to admit it, but I have become so dependent on my stupid smart watch that my life is in chaos without it! I am late to meetings, I am missing texts and not hearing phone calls. Here, I used to make fun of people who wore them and now I don’t know that I can be productive without it is pretty sad to admit… I had a colonoscopy consult that morning and set up my next procedure for nearly 6 months in the future – that’ show far out they’re booked now. I got back and jumped right back into things, continuing to knock out items on my survey punch list. Vic & I snuck out to the Ye Olde Fish house for a quick lunch. The afternoon flew past as I got out and met with the staff, asking them questions to help prepare them for the Joint Commission survey. They’re just basic questions, but I can remember when I was in their shoes and I did whatever I could to avoid the inevitable surveys. Hell, I can remember during one survey, I hid in the classroom while the kids were in school to keep from talking with them because I was terrified of saying something stupid. So, I totally understood the apprehension they felt as I quizzed them on stuff that they already know. The only thing that made it better was that I handed out candy for just answering the questions. ???? I did a quick survey of the 500 unit and wrote out some work orders for last-minute lipstick on the old pig before calling it a day. I got out just in time to play a quick round of golf on the airport property. I had a couple of good throws, but most were just OK. I ended the day at par, which was fine for me. I had to laugh on hole 5. I teed off and thew my Katana close to 300’, landing out by the big metal grate in the middle of an open field. Suddenly, a truck careened onto the fairway and drove over to where my disc was and acted like they were going to run it over, swerving at the last moment and then driving across the grass, back onto the street and drove away. I eventually realized it was one of my buddies that works out at the airport that I’ve played a couple rounds with. He was messing with me, as had teased that he was going to do something like this and steal my disc! LOL. Then on 9, I got off a really long throw…just in the wrong direction. I threw it all the way onto the island and nearly hit the post, landing just a few feet away from the pin on 3. Unfortunately, I bogied that hole, but I laughed it off and blamed it on the heat. The sun came out that day and by the time I was done playing, I was pretty sweaty for the first time all week. I guess summer isn’t actually over yet… That evening, I helped Luke work on our mower and a couple others that he had gotten from his friends. We wound up scrapping our old one. The deck is rusted and broken, the handle is broken and Luke is having trouble keeping it running when it gets hot. We tried to get the older of the two working. We put in a plug, new gas and cleaned out all the old, built-up grass. And although we could make it run with starter fluid in the carburetor, we never could get it to run on its own. We eventually gave up and I think he’s going to have Ann’s cousin Julie’s husband look at it. Apparently, he’s pretty good with small engines. I encouraged Luke to buy the other one. It was a nice Troy Built mower that looked new and sturdy. I’m not sure what he’ll end up doing, but I left it up to him. Ann had Julie over that day to clean the house and it looked really nice until Lola pissed in the house three times that evening. She’s also licked another bald spot on her back, just above her tail, where she always wants to be scratched and will rub up it against the underneath of our end tables and my desk. I’m not ready for another dog in diapers! Annie cooked that evening, making us chicken & rice bowls – like the ones Luke likes at Chipotle. Sam came over after softball practice to eat as well and there wasn’t much leftover when I went in later to clean-up. Luke was pretty wiped-out from his long day. He worked with Chad, doing their lawn work that day. Sam came over after school then went on to practice. After she left the second time, he went on to bed and we didn’t see him the rest of the night. That evening, I received notification that the ticket had been resolved for the website. So, I went out and tested everything. Sure enough, they had about 99% of everything back up and working properly. I fixed the last little bit and then published last week’s blog entry. We watched a couple shows on the big screen and both fell asleep. Ann was smart and went on to bed but I stayed up and had a little ice cream and then I was wide awake. I got caught up on some blog stuff and listened to a little music for an hour or two, staying up well past midnight again that evening. We have lots of social media pictures to share this week.

Thursday was more of the same as we commuted back to Columbus on a foggy, cool morning with a lovely sunrise. You can see that it’s getting light later and later with each day by the position of the sun on our way to work. The days are definitely shorter with the sunsets coming earlier and earlier…a sure sign that summer is waning and that my favorite time of the year is fast approaching. It was another fast day for us at work as we continued prepping for next week’s survey with maintenance hitting a few last-minute issues and housekeeping focusing on the patient bathrooms. As for me, I continued pulling things together for my survey punch list that I created from various meetings from the last week or so. After work, I had just enough time to play a quick round of disc golf across the street, at the Airport. I missed an easy putt on 7 that would’ve matched my personal best, but instead I fell one stroke short and finished with a 24. The disc was flying really well for me that night with just a slight breeze out of the northwest. I had a really long throw on 9, but it went all the way over to island, where the green is for 3. So, despite throwing I nearly 300’, I was still 100’ away from the goal. I wound up parring the hole and then headed out to pick up Annie. I was a little sweaty as the temps got up into the mid-eighties – summer is still hanging on, here in central Indiana. We stopped at Needlers on our way through town to pick up a few supplies for Poker Night. Food is so expensive. We can’t get out of the store without spending a hundred bucks anymore. I helped Annie prep her amazing sausage dip then unloaded the truck for Luke. He had apparently run late after mowing a few lawns that night as all our yard tools were still in Betty White. He said that the battery was low and she had trouble starting, so I threw it on the battery charger and he pulled it off when he got home from his Fire 1 class with Alex that evening, up in Indy. We got the band of Merry Men together for a coaches meeting at the Woltering Hole. Mark has really done his basement up right. If I had that basement, Ann would be hard pressed to get me out of it! We had a great turnout and even had Mark’s son-in-law join us. Rick was out “glamping??? with Lynnie and Scott couldn’t make it, but everyone else did – including the return of Pat! After completing his college courses, he is now good to go on Thursday nights again. I didn’t realize that TNF games are all on Prime Video only. I guess Bezos shelled out close to a billion bucks for the exclusive rights – wow! Mark got it on all 3 TVs somehow and it was a great game to watch. The food was awesome as always and Mark had an amazing selection of spirits that night. I brought over one of the new bottles of that 1800 tequila I picked up a few weeks back and shared it. We pretty much killed it, so I’m glad I bought two so we still have one at the house. We got into Mark’s Grey Goose for a mixie and then the sippers started – first with some Hard Truth Indiana rye and then to cap off the evening, Mark opened his new bottle of Clayton James single barrel, cask-strength whisky. They were both good, but that last one is one that I will have to chase down. It was smooooth… As for the cards, I only one hand it came with controversy. We had to get the “Rules Committee??? out to solve it and Bryan was forced to split the pot with me in a 7/27 game. We said our goodbyes and went our separate ways. I tried to stay up and watch a couple shows on the DVR, but didn’t make it past the first commercial, waking up an hour later and finally heading on to bed…
We altered our Friday routine a bit the next morning. We still went through the Dunkin drive thru and I dropped Annie off at her downtown office, but instead of working from home that day, I drove on over to Columbus to work in the office. I wound up taking Barney that day, as she needed to stretch her legs before we start driving her more regularly, now that the cooler temps are just around the corner. I slammed on the brakes, somewhere in the country to swerve and miss a raccoon that darted out onto the road. When I did, my foot went all the way to the floorboard, scaring the crap out of me. Thankfully, I didn’t need to change my shorts, but it made for interesting rest of the ride into work. Thankfully, there were only 3 more stop signs and I safely made it into work that day. I was hoping to get up to Franklin after work to see Abby, as it was her 23rd birthday that day! I called her late last night / early this morning and sang to her the HBD song. Will surprised her after work by calling her Greensburg friends Mary & Julia as well as her Carly and some Franklin friends to come to the Sig house and surprise her after Will took her out to dinner at Mike’s Grill Bar. They all jumped out of Will’s dark room and yelled, “Surprise!??? She was so happy…and Will scored some major brownie points with that one! ???? Ann put a sweet post on Facebook. That day, I went through my books for a last-minute review and found several things that needed updating. That wound up taking me all day to get them exactly how I wanted them. I took Vic out to lunch that day as a thank-you for all that he’s done this last week and a half. We tried to go to the Airport, but it was swamped. So, we ended up going to the Fair Oaks Mall – sorry…Nexus Park, as it’s been re-branded now… for some Mexican food at Riviera Maya. I wound up getting out late. It was close to 530 by the time I got out to play a round of disc golf at the Columbus AirPark course (I think it may be my personal course at this point, as I never see anyone else out there at all). I started off rough, taking a penalty stroke on both of the first holes due to missing the mandatory obstacles but managed to pull out a par on both with 30-40’ birdie shots. My tee shot was better on 3 but missed an easy birdie. In fact, I didn’t birdie any holes that night – even though I threw my Katana further than I’ve thrown a disc ever in my life. That night, I nearly broke the 350’ barrier, throwing it an incredible 348’. The problem is that the hole is only 300’ and I wound up hitting the Sierra Club “reserve??? area, near the island again on 3. I missed the hole pretty badly, but boy did that disc sail!! In fact, I had two shots of over 300’ that evening, after recording my longest shot on 5 as well. I ended with a 27 and chocked it up to stress for my lack of focus during my putts. I nursed van back home, rolling through stops and doing the best I could to coast as I approached stop signs. There was a little brake at the very bottom of the pedal, so I was able to get it whoa-ed up enough. I tried to call Jerry, but there was no answer and I remembered we saw them at ElRep last week and they said they were enjoying vacation all this week, so I’ll have to get in touch after the weekend to get it looked at. If I remember correctly, he thought that the master cylinder might need replaced… When I got home, I was ready for a drink. So, I got out the rest of that tequila, mixed it with some tonic water and a few lime wedges and headed out back for some porch time. I had a cigar and the new album that came out that afternoon by one of my favorite new bands called Desert of Talking Shadows. I had pre-ordered their new vinyl EP and so when it was finally released today, they sent me a download link for a digital copy of it. I blasted it out back and enjoyed my cocktail and stogie with the dogs. Ann ordered Papa Johns and Luke had Sam over, so we enjoyed dinner together in the living – watching the Suicide Squad movie on the big screen. The kids dipped-out after like the first half hour of the show to go get cookies at some fancy-schmancy store. So, we turned off the movie and tried to watch a couple shows. I couldn’t stay awake and wound up sleeping on the couch for a couple hours before giving it up and heading off to bed. Here are pictures of recent additions to my Hot Wheels collection.

We enjoyed sleeping in on Saturday morning. We slowly got up and did a few things around those before getting dressed and going over to Mom & Sandy’s house to watch the annual Tree City Fall Festival parade. I heard there was a cool car show, but I never did hear where it was. I forgot I wanted to get over to Columbus to for their annual Hot Rods & Rock & Roll, downtown on the square. Instead, we sat with Mom & Carol on her front porch. The parade was really long, lasting close to an hour, I’d say. Luke was able to drum up a couple new jobs, landing a regular mow job at the house behind Gma & Gigi and then a one-off, bush-trimming job across the street from the gals. He finished up working in the yard and joined us towards the end. Afterward, Ann & I went to Walmart to do our weekly shopping as well as get stuff for Abby’s birthday party. I mean, her final party. Hell, it’s been her birthday weekend – the Bday Queen, I think. She went out last night, of course, but that day they had the first home football game of the season, so there was a big tailgate party as always. I asked if she was gonna make it down to spend the night, but there was no way – LOL. After we got all the goods put away, I wrote out bills. Gawd, I hate writing bills. Ya know, we’d actually have money if we didn’t have to pay bills or go to the grocery store! When I finished, I headed back out, to drive over to Nineveh in Johnson County. I wanted to play their disc golf course out on the grounds of Camp Atterbury. It was a nice area, right next to the facility where I interviewed for a job after college. It had really built-up and had not only the Coyote Trace disc golf course, but also a big RC car racetrack and an even cooler RC airplane air strip. There was an archery range and a few other cool things out there. As remote as the course is, I was impressed at how well manicured it was. The grass was cut, the trees & shrubs trimmed and fairly easy to navigate with nice signage at each hole. The bugs, however, were REALLY bad. I mean really, really bad. Still, I managed to only eat a couple and only had to dig one out of my eye – LOL. It was a sprawling course that took me an hour and a half to walk nearly three miles. I tried to lose my Katana a couple times, but thankfully found it each time. It was a nice mix of open and wooded areas that went both right and left. All told, I ended up three over par, so I was happy with my performance, overall…especially since I had never played there before. I had to walk a few holes just to see where they went and what hazards were there. I drove home afterward, stopping at the Tree City Travel Center for Amoco gas and Sonic slushes for Ann & I. I shut off the car and saw Ann was calling me and Justin was texting me. Ann wanted me to pick up some ranch mix and Justin wanted us to meet him at Wings & Rings. So, I drove home (forgot to get gas!) to get Annie and met Justin, Amanda & a couple (who were very cool) we didn’t know – Robert & Lindsey – for dinner. They had just ridden back from the Cincinnati Octoberfest (called Zincinnati) on their motorcycles. I felt bad because I didn’t even shower or anything after playing golf, as Ann came out when I pulled into the driveway. It was good to see Justin & Amanda and we had fun catching up on things. We shared a big hookah (I don’t know what they call it, actually – but it’s a lot of beer in a tall container with a tap) of the Sam Adams Octoberfest beer. It’s pretty much the only one that I like (of all the specialty fall beers). After a ton of food, plenty of brew and an hour or so or two of laughs. I have no idea how long we were there, as it seemed like only 10 minutes! When we got home, I assumed the position and quickly fell asleep on the couch with Delilah. LOL! I tried to stay up and fought it for a big, but eventually gave it up and went on to bed. Meanwhile, it was date night for Luke & Sam – who drove down to Madison for dinner. They tried a few different places but wound up at Rivertown Grill. They came back at some point that night, but I was already sleeping. She stayed here until the wee hours of the morning.
I woke up early on Sunday morning – like in the middle of the night. I think it was about 2. I’m not sure what was happening, but both Luke and Ann were up and moving about. I wound up tossing & turning, tried using the restroom, getting a drink, using my ChapStick…but nothing helped. I laid in bed for a couple hours before finally getting up a little before 4 am. I finished editing pictures and videos and wrote out the html code for this week’s blog entry while watching all the NASCAR races from the last couple weeks. Once Annie got up, I did my weekly household chores and got something to eat. We watched the fantasy football show and set our lineups for the day. From there, we just waited on family to show-up. First was Matt & Taylor, followed by Abby & Will. Next came Luke & Sam, who arrived at the same time that Mom, Sandy, Pixie and Ollie. Dee & Jamie came shortly afterward and we all packed into the living room and watched some RedZone on the big screen for a while and talked fantasy football trash. ???? Shortly thereafter, we moved into the kitchen and had cake & ice cream. It as a really cool cake this year that Mary made for Abs’ birthday. I put on a classic softball t-shirt from her travel Extreme team, as a tribute to her childhood. I think that’s something I’m going to start doing for the kids from now on for their birthdays – wear a different coaches team shirt! We sang a roaring version of the birthday song. The cake did not disappoint! Later, she opened her presents and then Mom & Sandy and Dee & Jamie left and then Ann started cooking dinner. For her birthday dinner, she selected NY strip steaks, baked potatoes, cheesy broccoli and salad with her homemade ranch dressing – yum! As she made everything else, I threw the steaks on the grill. She had started marinating them last night and they nearly melted on the grill… Abby joined me outside and helped me grill and then we all sat down at the table and enjoyed a big dinner together. We had to put the 2nd leaf in the table to fit us all in and it was really cool to have everyone together. I looked at Ann and for a little while, all was right in the world…we had all our babies together at the same time. ???? We flipped between the Cowboys game and RedZone that afternoon. We got Matt & Taylor set up with a backup TV while they get their big Samsung TV fixed. Luke cleaned Abby& & Will’s shoes (that was his present to Abs). As Matt & Taylor left, he accidentally backed into Tonya and made it lurch backward. We got a good laugh out of it and then waved goodbye as he honked all the way out of Ryle, like he does every time he leaves. Afterward, we moved to the kitchen and played a little euchre. The kids beat us 10-9 both games before we saw them off, heading back to Franklin. Abby’s tummy wasn’t feeling well, so we hope she gets to feeling better. I had my housekeeper’s grandson text me during the game and tell me that Roy had an accident at Walmart and wouldn’t be in tomorrow. So, I spent some time contacting our housekeeping service to see if they could send us a 2nd person tomorrow and possible all of next week. I sure hope Roy’s ok…. I finished up the blog that evening while falling asleep on the couch and watching the Bears & Packers on Sunday Night Football as Luke took Samantha home. It was a relaxing way to wind down another fast week and a great way to put the kibosh on Abby’s birthday weekend.
