Mother Nature reminded us that we’re still in the winter season with a return of arctic air all week, including rain & snow that brought with it hazardous road conditions and flooding throughout south-central Indiana. Matt attended a funeral with the entire wrestling team as they buried a teammate’s father. Abby’s make-shift travel team had their only away game (possibly their only game?) of the season as we travelled to Batesville. I tried to hook up with my best friend Paul, who now lives over there, and have him meet us at St. Louis elementary school. Unfortunately, he was already in St. Louis – Missouri, that is! It was for the best however; as someone forgot to tell Batesville this was a B-team game. They never did call of their dogs that game and they obliterated us 54-4. This team not only had zero practices together, but had a total of 3 or 4 practices individually all year. This was the inaugural year for this fledgling program and it needs some serious tweaking for next year. Abby’s good friend, Emma’s father (Trevor – Phyllis & Dick’s son) coached the team that most closely resembled the Bad News Bears on hardwood. Trevor would get frustrated a few times during the game with the referees and opposing coach, as I said; they never called off the hounds. Abby did play good defense, for the most part – one of only a few bright spots for the team. Emma scored the team’s only points and also played good defense…and Bu had the team’s only blocks (3) and steals (2). She also had a foul to save a basket but never attempted a shot, or a rebound. I felt bad for the girls as the defeat was demoralizing. I mean it was miserable for those poor girls. I was impressed that Trevor made it through the whole game without being kicked out. I don’t think I would’ve done as well in his position – it is a painful couple of videos to watch. To their credit, though; the gals never gave up. We were glad to get the hell out of there. It rained all day and night and there were flash floods in the area. Besides the rain, the temps were also falling throughout the day…
On Tuesday, we had a very cold start to the day. It continued to precipitate all day, but this time it was entirely snow. Abby went to spellbowl practice and Matt had weight lifting. Abby & I took Luke to the Y for basketball practice. I had planned on walking, but instead I worked 1:1 with Bu’s basketball skills. We worked mostly on positioning for rebounds, shooting a layup and just working on fundamentals…something that was obviously lacking in her limited practice schedule this year. One of the things that is going around is a nasty stomach bug and on Wednesday, Abby’s jazz class was cancelled due to the instructor (Courtney) being sick. That evening, the #8 Boilers beat a scrappy IU team by 11 and we watched a cool American Idol as the kids sang Beatles songs. Abby missed basketball practice on Thursday night due to needing to get to tap class (she had missed the previous two weeks). It was a long day for me at CBC, as we held our annual competency fair where I again this year was charged with evaluating the 100 nursing staff members on their ability to perform CPR. It rained nearly all day and on through the night. It grew colder and windier as the night progressed. Eventually the rain yielded to snow and the wind was ferocious. It ripped the top off our light pole and broke it in to three pieces. We got some interesting artwork from the kids that evening and even received a very nice card from Mom & Dad from their annual formal dance at Down Yonder…
On Friday, it was very slick and there was actual snow & ice everywhere. The biggest issue with the roads is that because it was raining, the road crews didn’t have a chance to put down salt nor brine ahead of the snowfall. It took me close to an hour to get to work. The kids had a two hour delay and Ann ended up calling in sick. Our good friend Allen Smith continued his media push as he moves ever closer to his website rollouts as well as his book being published. He was on a couple of Indy radio stations today as well as on the local NBC TV station, raising awareness for the Biggest Loser tryouts being held the next day up in Shelbyville at the casino. I have the video as well as screen shots of his short 3 minute interview below. Ann has a friend who is involved in a charity gig to raise money for a family who was originally trying to raise money to save the life of their daughter…but after the baby passed away, the charity event became a way to raise money to help pay for the $65K of hospital bills the family incurred. Allen was very kind to donate a personally-autographed poster, water bottle and towel. The bottle & towel were both used by him on the show and I personally watched him sign all the items. He had just returned from Indy when I stopped over at he and Frankie’s house, just down the road from CBC. Abby had her friend Kenzie stay the night. The two of them, along with Matt all went out to the Greensburg high school basketball game. They had saved me some Papa John’s pizza since I got home late again after having a transport run two hours. The Indy court system is so slow and unpredictable. We sat up there for 3 hours, which made for a long week again…
We had to be up early on Saturday since Kenzie was being picked up by her Mom and taken to her basketball tourney at 7. We took Lukey out to the YMCA for his second-to-last basketball game of the year. He had another good game, as did his team – which crunched the Honda-sponsored blue team. Luke went 3 of 7 from the field with six points, 4 assists, 2 steals and was again in double figures in rebounds with 12! He was matched up with the best person on the other team for most of the game and played tough, tough D! We were very proud of him, although he was disappointed that the kid had scored a few points on him!! Good God, gas jumped $.40 overnight! When I talked to Ann about it, she said it was mainly based upon the issues that Libya was having…damn that Kadafi! Ann went scrapbooking at Mrs. B’s for most of the afternoon and evening. She took the auction items out to the Eagles for the charity event and ended up coming home. The kids helped clean up the playroom and earned ice cream. Luke even upgraded to an extra scoop due to earning all green cards this week for good behavior at school! We got carryout from Koch’s and vegged most of the afternoon with a couple naps. That evening, Matt & I did some research on cell phones as both of us are due for upgrades. Isn’t it always exciting when it’s time to upgrade your phone? 😉 I have passed my last two upgrades off to the kids but this go round, it was finally my time.
On Sunday, Matt & I made the trek over to Columbus to visit the Verizon Wireless Store. We were pretty sure what we were looking for, but ended up upgrading Matt’s phone a little more. We had looked at the LG Vortex for him but ended up getting him the Droid Incredible. I did a lot of research on the Droid X and talked with the salesman for quite a while. He was good enough to answer all my questions and that was the phone I walked out with – eventually. All told, we ended up spending 2 ½ hours there! It took forever for the poor guy to transfer my data over to the new phone. It will take a long time for me to figure out everything this baby will do; and I look forward to getting it all customized the way I want it! We listened to the Purdue game in the car and caught the 2nd half at home. They looked great against a very well coached Michigan St. team. The Boilers with JaJuan Johnson were just too much. They have two more games yet before the Big 10 tourney starts. They are playing really well and are peaking at the right time of the year. It got much warmer today and I had hoped to get the water pumped off the pool but never seemed to get out there. It was another nice, lazy day and I enjoyed watching Jeff dominate the NASCAR race in Phoenix. Damn, this new phone is big. We have four new videos for this week, including Allen on Channel 13, Abby’s basketball game at Batesville and Luke’s game at the Y:
Here are the final three videos we’ll post of the 7 wedding videos, by request:
We also have several miscellaneous videos this week for your viewing pleasure as well:
We now move on to the Waybac feature. Leading off, we have an old picture from what I believe to be from the 1930s with Aunt Dorothy (Mom, can you please verify?); Grandma Owens from her junior high years in the 1940s; Grandpaw Brown in his police garb in the 1950s; and Dad B from what I assume is the late 1950s from Oakland Elementary school in Lafayette.
Next up, we have Mom B at work in early ’89 – which should be in Michigan City at the prison, I believe; then several from the Wisconsin vacation that year, including Dad with his pants unbuttoned, Grandpaw Brown’s birthday; Trudi’s birthday cake with Rob, Homie & Aunt Dorothy; Rob sleeping in some stylish garb (sorry buddy, I couldn’t resist! HaHa!!); Rob with a mess on his face from eating chicken; and then Rob opening his birthday presents in LaPorte.
Here we have one of my favorite pictures: all of Matt’s Grandparents together in our Main St home in ’99 for his birthday; then two of me at CRH for Abby’s birthday – 1st with Dad and then with the special little girl; then we move to 2000 for a sweet picture of Matt & Bu at Holiday World (I think); Matt at his soccer practice, later that year; Abby out at the YMCA in a Halloween straw maze that I helped to set up and tear down; Abby at the Y for fire awareness week with the rolling fire hydrant that she was enthralled with and finally a couple from December of that year in Rossville at Tammie & Brett’s house for the Brown family Christmas / reunion with a cute one of Matt and then Bu with Ann, Aunt Marilou & Mom B; Then we end in 2001 with a couple of Abby’s 2nd birthday in September; Matt teasing Bu in our bare living room; and finally, we end with another classic – Matt in his new room in his favorite outfit at the time: his skivvies!! 😉
Well that does it for another episode of the Scheu Family Blog. Thanks as always for keeping up with us this time out and we’ll catch up with you next time. Until then, have a good one.
Later, Scheu
Hey guys hope as is well. Just got caught up on last week and this weeks blog. Very good. How did you fair with the storms yesterday? We got pounded pretty hard here. Knoxville was a mess yesterday. In fact many streets were completly shut down with roads turning into rivers. Some areas had like 4 to 5 feet of water running down them very wild to watch unfold on the news. They kept saying turn around don’t drown on the news. Can’t believe they have to tell people stuff like that. Many people got stranded in their cars and had to be rescued. I loved the videos from the wedding. Made me smile!! Hope you are liking your phone. I love mine very cool what all you can do on a phone nowdays. Well love you guys take care. Robby

Great videos and pictures again Tom. In the WayBac pics that is Trudi (the first picture). She called herself Tuffy Timm!! I think that your Grandpa gave her that name and if you asked her her name….she would say in a real soft voice “my name is Tuffy Timm”!! Love it. Loved the old pictures also they were a blast from the past. Thankyou for putting our pictures up also. Looks like Rob was eating chicken wings. He always loved them. The games were good to follow. Poor Abby’s team just doesn’t have it together. Luke is looking good defensively also. Way to go for both of you!!! Good picture of Matt. XXXOOO’s to all and also our love.
